Defensive Publications Series

The manual inspection and evaluation of the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) agents in complex computer systems may be challenging, especially in computer systems that include recommendation engines and ranking models. The manual inspection and evaluation of the performance of the AI agents in complex computer systems may be a tedious, subjective, and error-prone process. Determining the specific contributions of a multitude of individual signals to a final rank may be difficult when using human inspection, and in addition or in the alternative, performance drift from specific goals may go unnoticed.

This disclosed technology implements a recommendation quality evaluation artificial …

Faculty Research 2026

Transgenes are often silenced upon differentiation of pluripotent stem cells using conventional expression systems. Here, we developed the TK4 PiggyBac vector to conduct a comparative analysis to evaluate the impact of various promoters, transcriptional regulatory elements, insulators, and genomic integration sites on transgene silencing during neuronal differentiation. Our findings reveal that specific combinations of CAG and Ubc promoters with the Woodchuck hepatitis virus post-transcriptional regulatory element (WPRE) can prevent transgene silencing during differentiation, whereas chromatin insulators have less impact on sustained expression. Three novel safe harbor loci, distant from known genes, as well as the citrate lyase beta-like (CLYBL) locus, …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Well-Being Instrument For Health Professionals - The Corewellness Index, Nicholas E. Anton, Lauren Ball, Jeffrey S. Levy, Nicky Beaudoin, Catherine F. Pipas

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Healthcare worker wellness has received increasing attention from medical educators and healthcare systems given its importance to provider longevity and patient care. Wellness is multidimensional, and very few instruments evaluate all domains of wellness. Our team developed a comprehensive measure to evaluate the multi-dimensional nature of wellness. The purposes of this study were divided into four phases: phase 1) detail the development, design, and initial dissemination of the instrument, phase 2) collect feasibility and normative data for a diverse sample of healthcare workers, phase 3) evaluate the internal reliability of the measure and its component domains, and phase 4) …

Habitat And Conditions Of Poisoning Of Toxic Plants In North America, Michael H. Ralphs Mar 2026

Habitat And Conditions Of Poisoning Of Toxic Plants In North America, Michael H. Ralphs

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)

This paper presents a list of important poisonous plants in North America that are toxic to both livestock and humans. The aim of this paper is to present information to help reduce the risk of poisoning. The paper emphasizes the particular plant communities in which these plants grow. Some of these plants are endemic, growing on specific soils or specific ecological sites. Others are distributed more broadly throughout a vegetation type. A few of the plants are widespread, ranging over several broad ecosystems. In diagnosing poisoning, it is important to know what plants are expected to grow in the communities …

Brd4-Mediated Er Membrane Contact Creates Functionally Distinct Mitochondrial Subtypes, Brandon Chen, Rachel M Guerra, David J Pagliarini, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Inter-organellar communication is critical for cellular metabolism. One of the most abundant inter-organellar interactions occurs at the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria contact sites (ERMCSs). However, an understanding of the mechanisms governing ERMCS regulation and their roles in cellular metabolism is limited by a lack of tools that permit temporal induction and reversal. Through screening approaches, we identified fedratinib, an FDA-approved drug that dramatically increases ERMCS abundance by inhibiting the epigenetic modifier BRD4. Fedratinib rapidly and reversibly modulates mitochondrial and ER morphology, induces a distinct ER-mitochondria envelopment structure, and alters metabolic homeostasis. Moreover, ERMCS modulation depends on mitochondrial electron transport chain …

Anhedonia Underlies The Association Between Childhood Unpredictability And Adult Ptsd Symptoms: Evidence From Three Independent Longitudinal Cohorts, Christopher Hunt, Laura M. Glynn, Elysia Poggi Davis, Tallie Z. Baram, Caroline M. Nievergelt, Giovanni Castillo, Christian Cortes, Christine Y. Chang, Dewleen Baker, Victoria B. Risbrough

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Unpredictability in the child’s environment has recently emerged as a significant and unique form of early life adversity (ELA). Cross-sectional studies have linked childhood unpredictability with increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in adults; however, no prospective studies have tested the link between childhood unpredictability and PTSD risk in later life, nor what processes, such as increased anhedonia symptoms, might mediate such risk. Here, we leveraged three distinct prospective, longitudinal cohorts to test the hypothesis that unpredictability during childhood contributes to adult PTSD via worsening anhedonia symptoms.

Methods

Participants were male service members (n=314), adult females (n=170), and adolescents …

High School Teachers’ Perspectives Of Middle School Biomedical Science Career Exploration Programs, Stephanie Gurule-Leyba Mar 2026

High School Teachers’ Perspectives Of Middle School Biomedical Science Career Exploration Programs, Stephanie Gurule-Leyba

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Biomedical sciences (BMS) are a common career pathway for U.S. Hispanic high school students interested in pursuing healthcare careers. Little was known about how middle school career exploration programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics motivate Hispanic students to continue pursuing BMS careers. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore high school teachers’ perspectives of how middle school BMS career exploration programs can motivate Hispanic students’ interest in BMS careers. The study was grounded in Keller’s attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction motivation model. Thirteen high school BMS teachers, who have taught or are currently teaching the PLTW …

Using Facial Landmarks For Lip Motion Interpretation Applications, Kimi S. Wright Mar 2026

Using Facial Landmarks For Lip Motion Interpretation Applications, Kimi S. Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Facial motion, particularly lip movement, carries rich information about human speech that can be leveraged for a variety of computer vision and speech-processing tasks. Unlike other pixel-based methods, this work investigates the use of facial landmarks as a compact, privacy- preserving, and computationally efficient representation for lip-motion analysis. We evaluate landmark-based models across multiple tasks, including visual voice activity detection (VVAD), lip–audio synchroniza- tion, and visual speech recognition (VSR) for liveness detection. Using LRS3-VVAD1 and LRS22 datasets, we demonstrate that landmark-only models can achieve performance comparable to pixel-based systems for VVAD and synchronization, while significantly reducing parameter counts and inference …
