Tidal Modulation Of Topographic Eddies Drives Marine Megafauna Aggregations, Harvey Cairns, Daniel Conley, Philip Hosegood, Christopher Stokes

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Hanifaru Bay, in Baa Atoll, Maldives, is globally recognised for hosting the largest known feeding aggregations of reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi). These aggregations are spatially and temporally discrete, often associated with flood tides, and are thought to result from hydrodynamic processes that elevate zooplankton concentrations. This study investigates the role of flow-topography interactions, specifically around the small headland-like feature in the bay’s inlet (the ‘nodule’), in creating conditions conducive to these feeding events.A Delft3D hydrodynamic model of Baa Atoll was developed to simulate tidal flows within the bay, with high-resolution mesh focusing on Hanifaru Bay. Calibration and validation against …

BackgroundThe presence of artificial structures in our marine environments is increasing rapidly, with negative impacts for biodiversity. Greening of grey infrastructure (GGI) - an eco-engineering method applied to the marine context - aims to increase the ecological value of traditional grey infrastructure, while still allowing it to perform its primary human-centric function. GGI is a rapidly increasing field of research, being tested and implemented worldwide by academics, private practitioners, governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), amongst others, using a variety of methods. Outcomes vary widely, and results are communicated across a range of peer-reviewed and grey literature, rendering the evidence base for …

Nardilysin (NRDC) plays a role in multiple cellular functions in diverse cellular compartments, including ectodomain shedding in the plasma membrane, as well as chaperoning a key Krebs cycle enzyme in mitochondria. We had previously reported limited clinical information from two individuals with homozygous frameshift variants in NRDC. With inclusion of previously published individuals, here we report 14 individuals (10 females, four males) from nine unrelated families carrying homozygous NRDC pathogenic variants. Common clinical features include severe to profound developmental delay/intellectual disability (12/12), microcephaly (13/13), prematurity (5/13), lethality in the first 3 years of life (9/14), seizures (7/11), joint contractures (4/8), …

One of the most common interventions in the ED and ICU to restore physiologic homeostasis is fluid administration. It is essential for the intensivists and ED physicians to be aware of the physiological characteristics of different fluids and the potential harm associated with their use. In this article, we explore the physiology and pathophysiology of fluid administration in humans, emphasizing how fluid administration can alter acid-base balance, perfusion, osmotic and oncotic pressures, immunologic and inflammatory responses, and hemodynamics. We also discuss fluid resuscitation strategies across common clinical scenarios, such as septic shock, diabetic ketoacidosis, rhabdomyolysis, acute pancreatitis, and acute brain …

Background and Objective:

While vaccination remains central to controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants with partial resistance to immune responses has highlighted the need for complementary therapeutic strategies. Among these, antiviral agents that inhibit viral entry mechanisms are of particular interest. Animal venoms, especially scorpion venoms, are a rich source of bioactive peptides with potential antiviral properties. This study aimed to evaluate peptides derived from the Moroccan scorpion Androctonus mauretanicus as inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein, which mediates virus entry into host cells via ACE2 receptor binding.

Material and Methodology:

Six peptides from the venom of the …

Dentofasial

Cardiovascular and periodontal diseases are common inflammatory conditions in the human population. Tlymphocytes
participate
in
the

pathogenesis and inflammatory events of atherosclerosis. These immune cells enter the
inflamed artery wall and join macrophages via a number of interferon-c-inducible chemokines. Chemokines (IL-8),
cytokines, and growth factors also participate in this process. The interaction between interleukin- 8 and its receptor,
CXCR2, can also contribute to lesion formation in mice. The main causes of aggressive periodontitis is
Actinobacillus

Stem cells provide new hope to fasten the healing process of various oral diseases including periodontal tissue
(periodontitis). At present time, there is not yet found a material that can fix the teeth perfectly. Adult stem cells from
bone marrow widely used for treatment. Numbers of stem cell are limited so growth factor is necessary to promote
proliferation of stem cells. Growth factor that has been used is expensive and difficult to get. Because of these
constraints, it is necessary to develop alternative uses of medicinal plants as growth factor that accelerates wound
healing process. This study is aimed to …

The use of endosseous implants is directly related to the topography and quality of the patient’s residual bone. Several
techniques have been tried to expand its application through implant design alterations and surgical techniques for bone
augmentation. This article reviews the sandwich osteotomy combined with an interpositional autograft for vertical and
transversal augmentation in the atrophic mandible prior to endosseous implant placement. In conclusion, segmental
mandibular sandwich osteotomy can be recommended to fulfill the dimensional requirements of preimplant bone
augmentation in atrophic posterior mandible.

Dentofasial

Endosseous dental implants are the treatment of choice for restoring function and reconstructing most edentulous
areas of the maxilla and mandible. One of the most common problems in oral implantology is insufficient bone height
between the alveolar ridge and the mandible canal, as a result of mandibular atrophy from edentulism. Generally,
alveolar bone defects can be reconstructed by either distraction osteogenesis (DO)or autogenous bone grafting
(ABG). This paper discussed implant successful rate in DO versus ABG. DO shows a higher successful rate of implant
than ABG with the result more esthetic, lower rate of infection and bone resorption, no pain …

Numerals And Other Means Of Expressing Plurality In Language And Thought: A Developmental Perspective Across Cultures., Giovanni Giuseppe G.G. Nicosia Prof. Mar 2026

Numerals And Other Means Of Expressing Plurality In Language And Thought: A Developmental Perspective Across Cultures., Giovanni Giuseppe G.G. Nicosia Prof.

Numeracy

Several ancient languages use linguistic structures to differentiate between singular, dual, and plural forms that are used when one, two, or many objects are referenced. (Some languages go further, adding a trial form to differentiate two from three.) In many modern languages, numerals are used to convey precise number. After reviewing a range of ways languages express number (including the interesting case of Pirahã which does not express precise number), the paper concludes with a proposed developmental path for the expression of quantity in languages.

An Acetylation-Dependent Switch Underlies Host Disease Tolerance During Streptococcal Infection, Sumit Kumar Paudel, Sowmya Gannavaram, Michael G Caparon, Wei Xu

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Building on our finding that Streptococcus pyogenes pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) suppresses host disease tolerance (DT) via short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-mediated modulation of host acetyl-CoA and IL-10 levels, we characterize the global transcriptomic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying this immunometabolic manipulation. Combining new histological and ultrastructural analyses with an in-depth re-analysis of single-cell and bulk RNA-seq datasets to more comprehensively characterize the DT response, we show that PDH deficiency is associated with broad immunologic rewiring, characterized by intracellular bacterial containment within phagocytes, expansion of pro-resolving myeloid cells, and altered cell-cell communication. Metabolic analysis of ΔPdh-infected tissues revealed a shift away from acetyl-CoA …

Sickle Cell Visualization In Vivo In Humans: Microvascular Occlusion Formation And Hemorheological Indices, Marisa M Morakis, Luojie Huang, Gregory N. Mckay, Sophie Lanzkron, Lydia H. Pecker, Nicholas J. Durr

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Vaso-occlusion is a signature pathology of sickle cell disease (SCD). However, the lack of in vivo methods to observe individual blood cell dynamics in humans limits our understanding of occlusion formation mechanisms. We present a novel in vivo, noninvasive, label-free, and high-resolution imaging technique to study blood flow and sickled cell behavior in affected individuals. We used oblique back-illumination microscopy (OBM) to capture videos of 91.0 ± 42.3 sublingual capillaries in each of 10 participants with SCD before and after red cell transfusions and compared the measurements to 10 unaffected controls. With direct observation of blood cell activity, we identified …

Neuromodulating Mammals For Military Operations: Ethical Responsibility And Governance In Security Domains, Elise Annett, James Giordano

Strategic Insights

This commentary examines ethical and governance challenges associated with the potential use of neurotechnology to influence the behavior of marine mammals for military purposes. While the use of dolphins and sea lions in naval operations has historical precedent, reports suggesting that advanced neurotechnologies may be used to modulate or control the behavior of orcas represent a significant ethical and legal inflection point. Invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as implantable neural interfaces, pharmacological modulation, or remote stimulation raise serious concerns about animal welfare, agency, and the potential dual-use implications of neurotechnology. Stronger governance frameworks, including international dialogue, Department of War policy guidance, …
