Perspectives On Food Sovereignty In Chicago, Camden Bruce Blowers
Perspectives On Food Sovereignty In Chicago, Camden Bruce Blowers
Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
The research question for this project focuses on food sovereignty. “How do individuals working with food in Chicago identify their role in promoting food sovereignty?” is a research question that expands with some nuance into the question of “who” individuals are in terms of political orientation. When asked to identify political ideology and economic ideology, the values can be greater quantified. Using mixed-methods, this paper critically assesses perspectives of individuals working with food in Chicago. The online survey enumerates the individual perspectives, food culture, and sociopolitical interactions of food sellers, producers, and advocates. Ten interviews further establish 1) the sociopolitical …

Quantifying Location-Based Variability Of Regional Brain Metabolism Using Microsamples From Apoe Knock-In Mice, Jason G. Wells, Esteban G. Colman, John C. Price
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is an important lipid transporter in the brain. There are three different ApoE variants: ApoE2, ApoE3, and ApoE4. Each of these variants either contribute to or protect against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The Hippocampus (HC) and the Entorhinal Region (ER) of the brain consistently develop AD pathology first. We hypothesize that ApoE variants affect lipid and protein metabolism in these regions more strongly than in others. Differences in the regional regulation and the ApoE-isoform impacts of these metabolic pathways remain unknown.
We measured brain protein turnover rates in ApoE knock-in mice labeled with deuterated water. Using a laser …

Macrophage-mediated phagocytosis of tumor cells elicits potent antitumor immunity. Nonetheless, sole-blockade of the anti-phagocytosis molecule CD47 has yielded insufficient therapeutic outcomes. Here, we report that glioblastoma (GBM) cells expressed abundant levels of phagocytosis checkpoint CD24. We further show that dual blockade of CD24 and CD47 synergistically enhances the pro-phagocytic activity of macrophages, thereby improving tumor antigen cross-presentation and activating the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway. This innate immune activation facilitates T cell infiltration into tumors and sensitizes tumors to anti-PD1 therapy, improving survival outcomes in murine GBM models, including immunosuppressive tumors reflecting human GBM-like features. Thus, our …
Productive Systems And The Problems Of Agricultural Development, R. Badouin
Productive Systems And The Problems Of Agricultural Development, R. Badouin
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
This article discusses how agricultural development requires changes in productive systems under conditions of population growth, rising incomes, and urbanization. It distinguishes between cropping systems, production systems, and farm management systems, and examines how each should evolve in response to food demand. The author analyzes the balance between food crops and export crops, as well as between plant and animal production, emphasizing food security, resource efficiency, and the risks of dependence on external markets or animal-based consumption patterns. The article frames agricultural strategy as a structural response to development pressures rather than a purely technical adjustment.
Concealed Feudal Privilege: The Past And The Future In The Making Of Property Law, Ugo Mattei
Concealed Feudal Privilege: The Past And The Future In The Making Of Property Law, Ugo Mattei
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This article critically examines the evolution of private property law from its origins in European and American legal traditions to its current entanglement with global capitalism and digital technology. Drawing on historical analysis and recent scholarship, the author argues that modern private property, far from realizing the promise of emancipation from feudal privilege, has served to cloak new forms of class domination. Through narratives crafted by jurists, property law has continually mediated the interests of the powerful and marginalized popular masses, substituting class-based privilege for blood privilege. The article explores how legal concepts—such as privacy and the social function of …
Property In The Short Twentieth Century, Fernando Atria
Property In The Short Twentieth Century, Fernando Atria
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This article examines the evolution of property law in the "short twentieth century," focusing on the shift from a classical, unified, and individualistic concept of property toward one defined by its "social function." Drawing on Anna di Robilant's historical analysis and legal developments in Chile, the article discusses three interrelated strands of the social critique of property: the doctrine of abuse of right, the concept of the social function of property, and the pluralist ("tree-like") model of property regimes. It contrasts the Will Theory and Interest Theory of rights to clarify the nature of "fractured rights," where legal powers may …

From Farm To Fork, And Beyond: The International Politics Of Food Standards, Julia E. Srnec
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
Food safety standards are incredibly politically charged due to how much they can differ between countries and how implementing new standards in a country can impact the economy of those depending on the exports of food products. The political division regarding food safety standards can begin to be understood once the impacts on national and international economics, as well as the consequences of regulations beyond the economy, are considered. Nongovernmental organizations such as the World Health Organization help to mitigate conflict over trade policy disagreements, however some divisions persist. The use of non-tariff barriers on the imports of food-related goods can …

Introduction: Advanced-stage high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) is a disease that is difficult to manage due to its heterogeneous clinical behavior. No reliable prediction of response to chemotherapy is currently available and the overall survival rate remains poor. Herein, we sought to determine the molecular mechanisms by which microRNAs (miRNAs) confer chemoresistance in ovarian cancer and demonstrate the efficacy of targeting miRNAs to sensitize HGSC to cisplatin treatment.
Methods: Next-generation miRNA sequencing was performed using microdissected HGSC specimens to identify an miRNA signature for intrinsic chemoresistance, and miR-625-3p was selected for further study. The effects of miR-625-3p on cisplatin sensitivity …

Khirbat Shumeila: Buildings From The Persian And Hellenistic Periods And Installations In Their Surroundings / ח'ירבת שומילה: מבנים מהתקופות הפרסית וההלניסטית ומתקנים בסביבתם, Elena Kogan-Zehavi
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
Salvage excavations at Khirbat Shumeila identified four strata spanning the late Persian, early Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. The primary remains comprise two structures: Building 25, which features two distinct construction phases dating to the late Persian and early Hellenistic periods, and Building 6, dating to the Hellenistic period. These buildings, along with the installations uncovered within and around them, indicate intensive agricultural activity, suggesting their function as farmsteads. Their proximity to additional adjacent farmsteads implies their integration into a regional agricultural network established during the fourth-century BCE Persian administrative reorganization—a configuration that continued uninterrupted into the early Hellenistic period. …

AUIQ Complementary Biological System
The accelerating global generation of municipal solid waste, coupled with escalating energy demands, presents one of the most pressing sustainability challenges of the 21st century. Conventional waste disposal pathways, such as landfilling and incineration, exacerbate environmental degradation and resource loss. In response, thermochemical technologies—specifically hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), microwave-assisted processing, and pyrolysis—have emerged as promising strategies for waste valorization and renewable energy recovery. This review critically examines recent advancements in these technologies, emphasizing their roles in converting diverse waste streams into high-value energy carriers and carbon-rich materials. Comparative analysis reveals that HTC operates efficiently under subcritical water conditions, producing hydrochar with …
The Sentience Of The Horse And The Philosophy Of Natural Horsemanship: Implications For Hrd Leadership, Rob E. Carpenter
The Sentience Of The Horse And The Philosophy Of Natural Horsemanship: Implications For Hrd Leadership, Rob E. Carpenter
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper advances a biologically grounded philosophy of leadership through the lens of Natural Horsemanship. It reframes leadership as an embodied, sentient process rather than a purely cognitive or behavioral construct. Drawing from neuroscience, affective biology, sociology, and human resource development (HRD), it proposes that the horse–human relationship provides a living model for relational intelligence. The horse’s exquisite attunement to human emotion—mediated through limbic regulation and bio-behavioral synchrony—reveals that influence arises not from authority but from coherence. Leadership, like horsemanship, is a reciprocal act of co-regulation in which trust, safety, and communication are revealed through physiology before language. By examining …

This creative project explores how bodily awareness and expression deepen personal religious practice, with particular attention to the theology from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and embodied dance experience. Drawing from theological scholarship (Aquino and Gavrilyuk 2022, Brown 2014, Jordan 2016, Summers 2014, Taylor 2023, Zaluchu 2021), dance and liturgical studies (Debenham and Debenham 2008, Hackney 2020, Kent and Tucker 1996, Kline-Chesson 1989, Roseman 2015), and teachings from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Bednar 2001, Lloyd 1998, Nelson 2008, Tanner 2005, Wisco and Seferovich 2014), this study reveals that the body is not peripheral …
Flisser, Miriam, Philip Chan
Flisser, Miriam, Philip Chan
Bronx Jewish History Project
Miriam Flisser was born in Europe right after World War II to Jewish partisan parents. They fled danger and arrived in New York as refugees, settling in the Bronx. She grew up in safe, lively neighborhoods like Mott Haven and Pelham Parkway, speaking Yiddish at home until she learned English from kids on the street. Her dad was a skilled kosher butcher who later bought apartment buildings; the family kept a warm, traditional Jewish home.
Miriam excelled in Bronx schools, went to Bronx Science, then NYU’s Bronx campus and Albert Einstein Medical School (graduating a year early). She became a …

The Role Of Pet-Parenting Attitudes In Shaping Consumer Behavior Toward Preventive And Wellness-Oriented Pet Care, Jin Hua Jian, Chee Vui Wong, Jiangwei Yang
Jesselton Journal of Educators and Scholars
The increasing tendency to view pets as family members has transformed consumer behaviour in contemporary pet care markets, particularly in relation to preventive and wellness-oriented consumption. This study examines how pet-parenting attitudes shape consumer decision-making and expenditure on preventive pet care in an emerging urban context. Grounded primarily in Consumer Culture Theory, with the Theory of Planned Behavior as a supporting lens, the study adopts a quantitative approach using survey data collected from 400 urban pet-owning households. The findings indicate that pet-parenting attitudes exert a significant positive influence on preventive and wellness-oriented pet care expenditure. This influence operates both directly …

School of Psychology
This study advances the design of timing-sensitive, full-body interactive experiences supporting both collaboration and individual agency in children’s group play. We investigate how temporal structuring within an improved version of a full-body interactive system influences behavioral and perceived synchrony among children aged 9–10. Prior research has often focused on dyads, required human facilitation, or neglected relationship between perceived and actual synchrony. Addressing these gaps, we conducted a multi-user study comparing synchronous and asynchronous interaction modes using system-logged behavioral data and self-reports. Results demonstrate the synchronous condition fosters higher user performance, tighter temporal coordination, and stronger perceptions of shared movement. In …

Allergen exposure can present with a broad clinical spectrum. Individuals exposed to allergens may develop respiratory diseases such as asthma, skin manifestations such as urticaria, and potentially anaphylaxis. For those who reside in urban or unsanitary environments, cockroaches can serve as an unfortunate and persistent exposure to such allergens. Cockroach allergens are classically associated with IgE-mediated respiratory diseases. However, reliance on exposure history alone may lead to diagnostic misattribution when cutaneous symptoms occur without systemic allergic features. We describe a 22-year-old woman from Philadelphia who presented with a 48-hour history of diffuse pruritus and widespread erythematous linear and maculopapular wheals …

Crossing The Finish Line Towards A Disease-Modifying Treatment For Angelman Syndrome, Matthew C Judson, Jason J Yi, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Recent progress in the development of genetic therapies promises that impactful treatments for single-gene neurodevelopmental disorders are imminent. But can derailed neurodevelopmental processes be mended after broken genes are replaced or otherwise restored? The results of ongoing clinical trials for Angelman syndrome will soon yield answers to this pressing question, yet the trials face significant obstacles. Here we identify insights needed to aid the quest for a disease-modifying Angelman syndrome therapy, which could serve as a roadmap for the expeditious development of genetic therapies for other single-gene neurodevelopmental disorders.

Laparoscopic renal denervation (RDN) represents a specialized approach for hypertension, particularly when conventional methods face limitations. While catheter-based RDN has demonstrated significant efficacy in recent large-scale clinical trials and has been integrated into international guidelines, its effectiveness can be constrained by complex renal anatomy or incomplete ablation. We developed a novel laparoscopic RDN system, comprising an integrated radiofrequency (RF) clamp, RF generator, and cooling pump, to achieve more controlled adventitial ablation. This study aims to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and optimal parameters of this new system in a preclinical swine model. Sixteen pigs were divided into an immediate group ( …
The Rise And Fall Of Chinese Tax Incentives And Implications For International Tax Debates, Jinyan Li
The Rise And Fall Of Chinese Tax Incentives And Implications For International Tax Debates, Jinyan Li
Florida Tax Review
China had no foreign direct investment (FDI) before 1979. Now, it is one of the world's largest recipients of FDI. China has been generous to a fault in granting tax incentives to foreign investors. As of January 1, 2008, however, these FDI-specific incentives will be abolished or phased out. What explains the rise and fall? Were the tax incentives not effective in attracting FDI and promoting China's economic growth? What are the implications of the Chinese experience for international tax debates? This article examines these questions.
Part II of the Article provides an overview of the Chinese tax incentive regimes …

Oculopharyngodistal myopathy (OPDM) is characterized by ptosis, ophthalmoparesis, dysphagia, and distal weakness. Myopathological features include rimmed vacuoles and intranuclear inclusions. OPDM is associated with a pathogenic CGG repeat expansions in the 5'UTR of LRP12, NOTCH2NLC, GIPC1, RILPL1 and ABCD3. Translation of the repeat in the glycine reading frame has been demonstrated for expansions in FMR1, NOTCH2NLC and GIPC1. To assess for a similar phenomenon with LRP12, we expressed normal or expanded CGG repeats in the context of the 5'UTR of LRP12, upstream of a green fluorescent protein (GFP) in the three repeat reading frames. Repeat dependent translation occurs exclusively in …

The western painted turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, has the greatest tolerance to anoxia of any tetrapod studied to date. These turtles reside in the northern United States and southern Canada, and survive months of anoxia while submerged in ice-locked ponds and bogs. Reference genomes provide an important resource for elucidating the molecular bases for such unique physiological traits. The initial reference genome for this species, published in 2013, is highly fragmented, thereby limiting downstream analyses and biological interpretation. We created a new and improved assembly by combining PacBio HiFi, 10 × Genomics Chromium, Hi-C sequence data and Bionano optical mapping …

The female power fantasy in which a powerless woman conquers a powerful man, thereby symbolically winning his status within the patriarchy for herself, is a classic feature of adult romance. It is visible, too, in YA romances like Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Sitting in tension with this inheritance from adult romance is the fact that YA is generally expected to be pedagogical, teaching young readers how to live and love well.
