Cannabis Drug Development And The Controlled Substances Act, Gabrielle Feliciani Feb 2023

Cannabis Drug Development And The Controlled Substances Act, Gabrielle Feliciani

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

Cannabis is a federally illegal drug in the United States, yet thirty-seven states and four territories have now enacted laws allowing the production, distribution, and consumption of cannabis for medical use. An estimated 5.5 million individuals in medical-use states are qualified to purchase cannabis to treat and mitigate symptoms for conditions ranging from cancer to post-traumatic stress disorder to chronic pain. But, only three cannabis drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The current state of federal illegality creates a problem of supply and demand—consumer demand for cannabis is high, but the number of approved drug …

Evolution Of Chemical-Cue-Mediated Antipredator Behavior In Threespine Stickleback Populations Experiencing Northern Pike Predation, Dale R. Stevens, Melissa A. Graham, Christina I. Bardjis, Susan A. Foster, John A. Baker, Kaitlyn A. Mathis Feb 2023

Evolution Of Chemical-Cue-Mediated Antipredator Behavior In Threespine Stickleback Populations Experiencing Northern Pike Predation, Dale R. Stevens, Melissa A. Graham, Christina I. Bardjis, Susan A. Foster, John A. Baker, Kaitlyn A. Mathis

Biology

Human-mediated environmental challenges are severely impacting local and global levels of biodiversity. Phenotypic plasticity can play a major role in aiding population persistence because plasticity can buffer populations from novel challenges. Given this role, it is possible for the degree of plasticity to evolve rapidly as it may place phenotypes near, but not exactly on, an adaptive peak for the new environment. Here, we asked if behavioral plasticity evolves following the introduction of a novel predator. We measured behavioral responses of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations, with and without the introduced apex predator northern pike (Esox lucius), to three different …

Nightingales, Falcons, Mountain Partridges: Birds In Macedonian Folk Songs, Masha Belyavski-Frank

Global Language Studies Faculty publications

Multiple roles of birds in Macedonian folk songs are discussed. They include nightingales, falcons, mountain partridges and doves, each having symbolic roles, especially in love songs and ritual wedding songs. The transformation of young men into falcons, and young women into mountain partridges, is particularly important in wedding songs.

Fine-Scale Variability In Catch And Growth Rates Of Western Rock Lobsters (Panulirus Cygnus) Show Heterogeneous Life-History Parameters, A Miller, Jason How, Simon De Lestang, Brooke A. Gibbons, E Lester, M Navarro, J Fitzhardinge, Tim J. Langlois

Fisheries Research Articles

Context: The western rock lobster fishery is recognised to be conservatively managed, with breeding stock levels estimated to be at record levels over the past decade. Despite this, anecdotal reports from commercial fishers identified an area of unexpectedly low catches in the centre of the fishery and lobsters’ biogeographic distribution.

Aim: To confirm the presence of this suspected ‘low-catch’ zone and examine the variability in catch and growth rates of lobsters if identified.

Methods: This study conducted an intensive mark–recapture survey over 8 months to explore catch rate, density, movement and growth rates across this ‘low-catch’ zone and three comparable …

Effects Of Adjuvants In A Rabies-Vectored Ebola Virus Vaccine On Protection From Surrogate Challenge, Catherine Yankowski, Drishya Kurup, Christoph Wirblich, Matthias J. Schnell Feb 2023

Effects Of Adjuvants In A Rabies-Vectored Ebola Virus Vaccine On Protection From Surrogate Challenge, Catherine Yankowski, Drishya Kurup, Christoph Wirblich, Matthias J. Schnell

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Ebola virus is the primary contributor to the global threat of filovirus severe hemorrhagic fever, and Ebola virus disease has a case fatality rate of 50-90%. An inactivated, bivalent filovirus/rabies virus vaccine, FILORAB1, consists of recombinant rabies virus virions expressing the Ebola virus glycoprotein. FILORAB1 is immunogenic and protective from Ebola virus challenge in mice and non-human primates, and protection is enhanced when formulated with toll-like receptor 4 agonist Glucopyranosyl lipid adjuvant (GLA) in a squalene oil-in-water emulsion (SE). Through an adjuvant comparison in mice, we demonstrate that GLA-SE improves FILORAB1 efficacy by activating the innate immune system and shaping …

Covid Vaccines And Intellectual Property Rights: Evaluating The Potential For National Legislation Implementing Global Patent Waivers, Ashley Dabiere Feb 2023

Covid Vaccines And Intellectual Property Rights: Evaluating The Potential For National Legislation Implementing Global Patent Waivers, Ashley Dabiere

Duke Law & Technology Review

Debates over the proper scope of intellectual property protections during the COVID-19 pandemic have occupied newspaper headlines since the first vaccines were developed nearly three years ago. Scholars and key politicians from several nations considered the implementation of a global patent waiver in an effort to make the vaccines more widely available in developing parts of the world. Although the question of whether such a waiver would fulfill this goal remains empirically unanswered and up for debate, the legal structure of United States patent law would make its implementation by Congress difficult given the value placed on intellectual property protections …

Plmsnosite: An Ensemble-Based Approach For Predicting Protein S-Nitrosylation Sites By Integrating Supervised Word Embedding And Embedding From Pre-Trained Protein Language Model, Pawel Pratyush, Suresh Pokharel, Hiroto Saigo, Dukka Kc Feb 2023

Plmsnosite: An Ensemble-Based Approach For Predicting Protein S-Nitrosylation Sites By Integrating Supervised Word Embedding And Embedding From Pre-Trained Protein Language Model, Pawel Pratyush, Suresh Pokharel, Hiroto Saigo, Dukka Kc

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Background: Protein S-nitrosylation (SNO) plays a key role in transferring nitric oxide-mediated signals in both animals and plants and has emerged as an important mechanism for regulating protein functions and cell signaling of all main classes of protein. It is involved in several biological processes including immune response, protein stability, transcription regulation, post translational regulation, DNA damage repair, redox regulation, and is an emerging paradigm of redox signaling for protection against oxidative stress. The development of robust computational tools to predict protein SNO sites would contribute to further interpretation of the pathological and physiological mechanisms of SNO. Results: Using an …

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that cardiac nitrosative stress mediated by pathological overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) via inducible NO synthase (iNOS) contributes to the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Other studies have suggested that endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) dysfunction and attenuated NO bioavailability contribute to HFpEF morbidity and mortality. We sought to further investigate dysregulated NO signaling and to examine the effects of a NO-based dual therapy (sodium nitrite+hydralazine) following the onset of HFpEF using a “2-hit” murine model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine-week-old male C57BL/6 N mice (n=15 per group) were treated concurrently with high-fat …

Endogenous Mirna-Based Innate-Immunity Against Sars-Cov-2 Invasion Of The Brain, Walter J. Lukiw, Aileen I. Pogue

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19, possesses an unusually large positive-sense, single-stranded viral RNA (ssvRNA) genome of about ~29,903 nucleotides (nt). In many respects, this ssvRNA resembles a very large, polycistronic messenger RNA (mRNA) possessing a 5′-methyl cap (m7GpppN), a 3′- and 5′-untranslated region (3′-UTR, 5′-UTR), and a poly-adenylated (poly-A+) tail. As such, the SARS-CoV-2 ssvRNA is susceptible to targeting by small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) and/or microRNA (miRNA), as well as neutralization and/or inhibition of its infectivity via the human body’s natural complement of about ~2650 miRNA species. Depending on host cell and tissue …

Chronic exposure to high-fat diets (HFD) worsens intestinal disease pathology, but acute effects of HFD in tissue damage remain unclear. Here, we used short-term HFD feeding in a model of intestinal injury and found sustained damage with increased cecal dead neutrophil accumulation, along with dietary lipid accumulation. Neutrophil depletion rescued enhanced pathology. Macrophages from HFD-treated mice showed reduced capacity to engulf dead neutrophils. Macrophage clearance of dead neutrophils activates critical barrier repair and antiinflammatory pathways, including IL-10, which was lost after acute HFD feeding and intestinal injury. IL-10 overexpression restored intestinal repair after HFD feeding and intestinal injury. Macrophage exposure …

Current therapeutic strategies for treating nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) have failed to alleviate liver fibrosis, which is a devastating feature leading to hepatic dysfunction. Here, we integrated single-nucleus transcriptomics and epigenomics to characterize all major liver cell types during NASH development in mice and humans. The bifurcation of hepatocyte trajectory with NASH progression was conserved between mice and humans. At the nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) stage, hepatocytes exhibited metabolic adaptation, whereas at the NASH stage, a subset of hepatocytes was enriched for the signatures of cell adhesion and migration, which were mainly demarcated by receptor tyrosine kinase ephrin type B receptor …

Sunrise Haiku Project: Learning To Trust, Diana Lynn Tigerlily Feb 2023

Sunrise Haiku Project: Learning To Trust, Diana Lynn Tigerlily

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

Born and raised in Illinois, I moved to the ocean during a major life transition, leaving behind the familiar: family, forest, and soil. This essay incorporates reflection, photographs, and haiku to represent sixteen months of journeying to the ocean sunrise everyday. The daily practice yielded unexpected insights, moments of deep healing, and growth. The biggest lesson for me was that no matter how thick the clouds and how strong my doubt, the sun will still rise. By witnessing the phenomenon of the sun rising everyday, I have been able to rise up through layers of self-doubt and grief, and begin …

A Daycare Artist Residency In Minusio: Aesthetic Eunuciations In Borderspaces, R. Michael Michael Fisher

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This is a compilation of happenings from an artist residency at an urban core daycare and kindergarten site from July-December, 2021. The artist provides some notes on how to approach a residency, create site-specific art and work with the children, their teachers, care staff and the community surrounding the site. A newly coined concept of minusio, emerged over time and served as an invisible basis for art-care, in a sense the mirror(ing) of the gift of nurturing but also the lack of care—and offering a route to what human’s really desire, when they are not so busy and distracted …

Studio As Collage: Familiar And Strange, Alison Shields Feb 2023

Studio As Collage: Familiar And Strange, Alison Shields

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

In this visual essay, I present an artistic inquiry I created as I examine the studio as a space to dwell, a space to daydream and a prompt for the imagination. I draw from previous research about artist studios and a visual archive created of objects within the studio as I re-imagine the studio as a collage; it is a place filled with odd juxtapositions of images, artworks, ideas and space that may produce new connections and imaginings. Through presenting the studio as both subject and process, I encourage readers to embrace the strangeness within familiar places.

In The Imaginal Realm Before She Could Read: A Healing A/R/Tographic Inquiry, Barbara Bickel

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This healing a/r/tographic inquiry ritually cycles through ancestral time to the present inspired by a recently found small grey book above the author’s dad’s desk—10 years after his death. This article shines light and memory onto spirit infused matrixial borderspace(s) through the co-mingling of text and image; returning to a site where text first met image in the early years of the author’s life. She is both the young dreaming artist-child and the responsible artist/researcher/teacher seeking embodied relational imaginal knowledge through the light of both image and word.

Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This essay invites readers into two creative correspondences that emerged during the author’s involvement in a participatory arts-based research project called Life Lines. The Life Lines project aimed at engaging a small group of young adults alongside researchers in their use of multimodal arts practices to inquire into what makes young adult identity work work the way that it does. In Life Lines the phenomenon of identity and the approaches to inquiry used to explore it were conceptualized through a material feminist framework that proposes the co-constituting nature of meaning and matter (i.e., bodies, atmospheres, and objects of …

“Can A Snowman Have More Than Three Snowballs?” Conducting Project Studies With Young Deaf Children, Christi Batamula, Bobbie Jo Kite Herbold, Julie Mitchiner Feb 2023

“Can A Snowman Have More Than Three Snowballs?” Conducting Project Studies With Young Deaf Children, Christi Batamula, Bobbie Jo Kite Herbold, Julie Mitchiner

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

This study explored conducting project studies with young deaf children in two American Sign Language (ASL) and English bilingual schools for deaf children. Project studies involve teachers’ facilitation of exploration on a topic that interests young children. In projects, children learn by doing, starting with questions based on children’s curiosity about a topic and finding answers to the questions through investigation, field trips, and play. Children then represent their understanding and ideas about the topic in various ways. This study used ethnographic methods by observing specific strategies that teachers used to facilitate deaf children’s learning in multiple early childhood classrooms. …

The Importance Of Early Number Concepts For Learning Mathematics In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Clifton Langdon, Christopher Kurz, Marie Coppola

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

This chapter discusses important background knowledge and research findings from a variety of disciplines that inform best practices for supporting optimal mathematical achievement in all children. First, discussion will begin with the importance of early numeracy for later academic outcomes, and why prioritization of instruction time and early intervention are needed to increase the likelihood of a strong foundation in numeracy. Second, a brief overview of numeracy development milestones will provide a basis for discussion of our central thesis: language experiences can impact numerical cognition, which then have a significant impact on academic outcomes. Third, given the importance of numeracy …

Asl Rhyme, Rhythm, And Phonological Awareness For Deaf Children, Leala Holcomb Feb 2023

Asl Rhyme, Rhythm, And Phonological Awareness For Deaf Children, Leala Holcomb

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

The author, who is of multigenerational Deaf heritage, provides a review of the literature on spoken and signed rhyme, rhythm, and phonological awareness used with young children. While a foundation of knowledge has been built with early language approaches in spoken language, little is known about parallel forms of these approaches in American Sign Language (ASL). ASL rhyme, rhythm, and phonological awareness have historically been absent from early childhood classrooms that serve Deaf children. The author explores why this is the case and draws upon historical events to provide answers. An autoethnographic account of the author’s experience with early language …
