Fifty-four Sprague-Dawley albino adult male rats were classified into three main groups each of 18 rats treated for a particular duration (1,2, and 4) weeks respectively. Each group was subdivided into three subgroups each of six rats treated as follows; group (1) serve as normal control, group (2, and 3) intra-peritoneal treated with TiO2NPs (50,200) mg/kg respectively, body *weight of all rats was measured before and after the experiment, then rats were dissected at the end of each experiment and the weights of the thyroid was measured. The result showed a highly significant decrease (p<0.01) in thyroid gland weight, a highly significant increase (p<0.01) in body weights and TSH, while a highly significant decrease (p<0.01) inT3 and T4 was observed in all different doses (50,200) mg/kg at durations 1,2 and 4 weeks. So, this study confirms body weight gain is associated with thyroid dysfunction.

Neurodevelopmental And Transient Impacts Of Brain Kynurenic Acid Elevation And Sleep-Wake Behavior, Katherine Rentschler Apr 2023

Neurodevelopmental And Transient Impacts Of Brain Kynurenic Acid Elevation And Sleep-Wake Behavior, Katherine Rentschler

Theses and Dissertations

Sleep is vital for healthy cognition and mood. Sleep dysregulation is implicated in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Sex differences in sleep and arousal dysregulation are prominent in patients with psychotic disorders. Elevated levels of the neuroactive tryptophan metabolite, kynurenic acid (KYNA), have been found in cerebrospinal fluid and postmortem brain tissue samples from patients with psychotic disorders. KYNA is an astrocyte derived antagonist at N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine (α7nACh) receptors. KYNA is synthesized in the brain from its biological precursor, kynurenine, via the enzyme kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT II), a potential therapeutic …

Governance Of Drug Development Alliances, Devashish Chandrashekhar Thakar Apr 2023

Governance Of Drug Development Alliances, Devashish Chandrashekhar Thakar

Theses and Dissertations

Innovative biotechnology firms (hereafter, biotechs or biotech firms) consider drug development alliances with incumbent pharmaceutical firms (hereafter, pharmas or pharma firms) as a means to access complementary commercialization capabilities, enhance their managerial skillset through close interactions, and maintain financial stability. However, biotechs face challenges in designing and developing alliance contracts that (a) enable them to retain and refine valuable alliance assets and (b) ensure that the alliance makes tangible scientific progress. Designing contracts to achieve these dual purposes is therefore a salient concern for the biotechs.

Given these challenges, the first essay of this dissertation explores the factors driving the …

Genomic Analysis Of Exophiala Sp. Etnp2018, A Marine Fungal Strain Isolated From An Oxygen Minimum Zone, Margaret Kelly Bernish

Theses and Dissertations

Microbial metabolic activity is central to biogeochemical cycling in virtually all ecosystems. Fungi are important parts of microbial communities, serving as decomposers, parasites, and symbionts. Most of our understanding of fungal ecology is derived from the study of isolated, cultured terrestrial fungi. However, the marine environment includes thousands of divergent, uncultured fungi. A number of these species, which include saprobes, parasites, and endophytes, can survive and sporulate in a wide range of salinities. Other such species face the additional challenge of limited nutrient accessibility. The genus Exophiala includes agents of mycoses in both humans and in marine animals. This research …

Risk Propensity In Journalists: An Analysis Of Journalists’ Personality Traits And How They Direct Behavior In The Field, Ellen Katherine Dunn

Theses and Dissertations

Much like first responders, journalists run toward dangerous scenes instead of away from them, often putting themselves at risk. Unlike first responders, there is no research on a how a person’s risk propensity ties to their career. For this project, reporters of various ages and tenures were surveyed on their sensation-seeking levels and propensity to engage in risky behaviors while working as journalists. Journalism risk propensity correlated positively with sensation seeking. Risk motivations increase with age and tenure, meaning that older and more experienced journalists are more likely to engage in risky behavior. Males are more risk-prone than females. The …

Exploration Into The Relationship Between Colitis And Depression: A Potential Role For The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor, Kasie Lynn Roark

Theses and Dissertations

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of chronic gastrointestinal disorders with unclear etiology comprised of two defined disorders – Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). IBD leads to chronic pain, socially isolating symptoms, and an overall reduction in patient quality of life. There is currently no cure for IBD. Due to decreased mucous production and weakening of the colonic epithelial lining, gut-microbiota and their metabolites can invade the intestinal lamina propria and circulate systemically, a term known as “leaky gut”. Recent studies show a relationship exists between peripheral inflammation, such as IBD, and depression. The gut-brain axis (GBA) …

The tunica media, the thickest middle layer, is composed of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) and the extracellular matrix (ECM) as its essential components. SMCs are circumferentially arranged and embedded in elastic lamellae. They are responsible for producing and maintaining/remodeling the extracellular matrix of the aortic media. …

Targeting Macrophages In Cancer Models Using Natural Compounds, Sierra Jordan Mcdonald Apr 2023

Targeting Macrophages In Cancer Models Using Natural Compounds, Sierra Jordan Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide. More specifically, breast cancer (BrCa) and colorectal cancer (CRC) continue to be the most diagnosed cancers and leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Given that surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy is only effective in 20% of CRC patients, and that there are no preventive agents for BrCa metastasis for hormone receptor negative patients, more effective agents and strategies are needed in both the prevention and treatment of these cancers. As one of the most abundant immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, macrophages help regulate primary tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis in many …

A Holistic Approach To Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptor-Sinophilin Cofilin Axis Biologic Antibody Treatment Proposal, Ashley S. Graham

Selected Honors Theses

PTSD affects about 5% of adults in the United States every year.1 This thesis investigates the common biologic therapies for PTSD and the specificity factor of the catecholamine binding to related norepinephrine alpha-2A adrenergic receptors. The binding of these catecholamines to adrenaline receptors in the spinophilin cofilin axis of the dorsal hippocampus causes fear-memory modulation and storage by altering dendritic morphology and thus manipulating neuronal plasticity. Targeting the inhibition of these respective receptors and increasing the activity of cofilin, a protein responsible for breaking down actin utilized for dendrite reaction to stimulus appears promising. By preventing the binding of catecholamines …

Modeling Immune System Dynamics During Hiv Infection And Treatment With Differential Equations, Nicole Rychagov Apr 2023

Modeling Immune System Dynamics During Hiv Infection And Treatment With Differential Equations, Nicole Rychagov

CODEE Journal

An inquiry-based project that discusses immune system dynamics during HIV infection using differential equations is presented. The complex interactions between healthy T-cells, latently infected T-cells, actively infected T-cells, and the HIV virus are modeled using four nonlinear differential equations. The model is adapted to simulate long term HIV dynamics, including the AIDS state, and is used to simulate the long term effects of the traditional antiretroviral therapy (ART). The model is also used to test viral rebound over time of combined application of ART and a new drug that blocks the reactivation of the viral genome in the infected cells …

Evidence That The Inner Nuclear Membrane Is A Functional Β1-Adrenergic Receptor Signaling Platform In Astrocytes, Kelsey Benton Apr 2023

Evidence That The Inner Nuclear Membrane Is A Functional Β1-Adrenergic Receptor Signaling Platform In Astrocytes, Kelsey Benton

Dissertations (1934 -)

The noradrenergic system exerts powerful modulatory influences over fundamental brain processes including attention, arousal, learning, and memory by activating adrenergic receptors on neuronal and glial cells. In addition to triggering rapid, transient changes in cellular physiology that drive short-term behavioral actions, these G-protein-coupled receptors also initiate delayed, long-lasting changes in cellular function by regulating gene expression. For example, in astrocytes, norepinephrine-induced activation of β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) rapidly induces glucose mobilization from glycogen stores, while simultaneously initiating delayed changes in the expression of glycogen storage genes. Regulation of gene expression requires adrenergic receptor-initiated intracellular signals to reach the nuclear compartment. To …

Altered Motivation & Dopamine Subcircuit Plasticity Unique To Sex During Protracted Opioid Withdrawal, Devan Marc Gomez Apr 2023

Altered Motivation & Dopamine Subcircuit Plasticity Unique To Sex During Protracted Opioid Withdrawal, Devan Marc Gomez

Dissertations (1934 -)

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is associated with enduring psychological withdrawal symptoms believed to contribute to drug abuse. Amongst these are shifts in motivational states, wherein pursuit of drug consumption exceeds that of non-drug rewards, reinforcing escalated opioid use and relapse vulnerability. A critical regulator of behavioral reinforcement, the mesoaccumbal dopamine system is thought to be both necessary and sufficient for opioid motivation. However, previous research into its involvement in opioid withdrawal has been limited to acute rather than protracted timepoints, global neuroadaptations rather than those in subcircuits, and overwhelmingly focused on males over females. Using a rodent model of self-administration …

Those Who Came Before: Learning From Native American College Alumni About Walking The Path Of Persistence, Jacqueline Schram Apr 2023

Those Who Came Before: Learning From Native American College Alumni About Walking The Path Of Persistence, Jacqueline Schram

Dissertations (1934 -)

The very low college success rate of American Indians and Alaska Natives has inspired a scholarly literature that seeks to explain this outcome and, more recently, to account for why some Native students persist in college. Few studies, however, look at Native students who actually have graduated from college, and these rarely reflect Native voices or examine the life histories of Indigenous students. To achieve a broader understanding of successful educational trajectories, this qualitative exploration moves beyond the category of students currently attending college and examines the lives of five Indigenous Marquette University alumni. Employing an archival oral history method …

Milton’S Learning: Complementarity And Difference In Paradise Lost, Peter Spaulding Apr 2023

Milton’S Learning: Complementarity And Difference In Paradise Lost, Peter Spaulding

Dissertations (1934 -)

When we consider, in the vein of Golda Werman’s Milton and Midrash, the idea of Milton’s Paradise Lost as self-consciously responding to the Bible, the question of why he makes the changes and additions that he does comes to the fore. This dissertation explores the middle books of Paradise Lost as Milton’s midrashic interventions that, among other things, emphasize the presence of education in the Garden. These scenes shed some light on Milton’s own views of education. Specifically, these interventions show a theory of education that conceives of difference as non-combative, a distinctly non-Hobbesian view of difference. Using Aristotle’s four …

Evaluating The Impact Of Land Use Changes, Drivers Of Tmdl Development, And Green Infrastructure On Stream Impairments, Charitha Jayasri Gunawardana

Dissertations (1934 -)

Despite the water quality improvements and regulatory advancements over the last 50 years since the enactment of the Clean Water Act, water bodies within the United States are still impaired for a broad range of contaminants from non-point source pollution. Improving watershed management approaches to meet this challenge will require a greater understanding of (1) how changes within a watershed, such as changing land use, impact stream water quality, (2) what influence socioeconomic, spatial and political factors may have on the progress towards meeting water quality goals, such as those set within Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), and (3) how …

Neuronal Glutamate Transporters Modulate Reward-Based Behaviors In Mice, Corey Nilon Apr 2023

Neuronal Glutamate Transporters Modulate Reward-Based Behaviors In Mice, Corey Nilon

Biological Sciences

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by uncontrollable, intrusive thoughts (obsessions), restlessness, and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). One of the genes associated with OCD encodes the neuronal glutamate transporter EAAC1. EAAC1 is expressed in the striatum, the main input nucleus of the basal ganglia, implicated with reward, which shows patterns of hyperactivity in patients with OCD. What remains unknown is how EAAC1 contributes to the different behavioral abnormalities of OCD. To address this question, we performed a set of behavioral tests in EAAC1-/- mice. Specifically, we asked how the execution of repetitive reward-based behaviors changed in these mice. Our …
