Oppa-Ng Gamsahamnita-Ng~~~: The Phonetics Of Nasal Cuteness In Korean Aegyo, Drew Michael Crosby

Theses and Dissertations

The term aegyo is often defined as a form of performative cuteness comprising a range of linguistic and non-linguistic behaviors (K. Moon, 2013; Puzar & Hong, 2018). Previous anthropological, discursive, and linguistic investigations (K. Moon, 2013; Puzar & Hong, 2018; H. Jang, 2021) identify it as a gendered practice associated with “modern and trendy young women in Korean mainstream culture” (K. Moon, 2017, p. 42), often used for requesting favors, maintaining social harmony, and gaining economic advancement (Manietta 2015; Puzar & Hong 2018). K. Moon (2013) asserts that the features that most prominently index aegyo are: rising-falling intonation (LHL%), the …

Anthropocene Composition: Teaching Terminal Generations In The Pre-Apocalyptic Classroom, John Michael Purfield Apr 2023

Anthropocene Composition: Teaching Terminal Generations In The Pre-Apocalyptic Classroom, John Michael Purfield

Theses and Dissertations

The Anthropocene is an era characterized by human alteration of the planet at deep geological levels and permeation of anthropogenic damage across all biomes. The primary crisis of this era is climate change, which is understood broadly as the anthropogenic disruption in weather patterns and global temperature averages caused by carbon emissions and other pollutants, as well as extractivism and terraforming (deforestation, monoculture farming, desertification and alterations of waterways, for example). Though popular media tends to frame climate change as a looming but always future problem, it is currently producing casualties, both human and nonhuman. The ongoing great extinction correlates …

“All The Rights Of Native Cherokees”: The Appearance Of Black People In Cherokee Society, Ayanna Goines Apr 2023

“All The Rights Of Native Cherokees”: The Appearance Of Black People In Cherokee Society, Ayanna Goines

Theses and Dissertations

The appearance of Blacks in Native spaces affected the very structure of Indigenous lives during the forced removal of Native groups in the 1830s to the emancipation of enslaved people in the 1860s contributing to the change from a “clan-based society to a society grounded in the modern concept of rule of law” as the need to control the actions of enslaved people called for the creation of laws. Tribal courts were also used to determine whether someone was recognized and adopted into the clan. Outside of government involvement, the status of enslaved Black people was reinforced by the social …

Multilevel Description Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Among Humans, Animals, And The Environment In Miraflores, Colombia, And South Carolina, Usa, Lidia Gual Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

Tick-borne diseases are emerging worldwide due to environmental shifts caused by land fragmentation and climate change. Among the most important ones spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGRs) are of particular interest due to their wide species variety and high pathogenicity. Given the global spotted fever group rickettsia (SFGR) distribution, evaluation and comparison of different populations is critical to better understand these pathogens' epidemiology and unravel the risk factors affecting disease occurrence. Consequently, this dissertation investigates SFGR highlighting the One Health framework, assessing animals, humans, and the environment. The first part includes an evaluation at the household level using human and canine …

Sensitivity Of The Cupid Experiment To Bragg-Primakoff Conversion Of Solar Axions And Alps, Kevin P. Wilson Apr 2023

Sensitivity Of The Cupid Experiment To Bragg-Primakoff Conversion Of Solar Axions And Alps, Kevin P. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The author reports in this dissertation on the application of a technique to use bolometer detector arrays, such as those of the CUORE experiment and its proposed upgrade CUPID, to search for 14.4 keV Solar axions arising from an M1 nuclear transition of thermally excited 57Fe in the Solar core. Density functional theory calculations performed using QU A N T U M ESPRESSO for Li2MoO4 enable the computation of a time-dependent axionto-photon conversion rate in the bolometer crystals. These calculations predict that the proposed CUPID detector will be sensitive to Solar axions or axion-like particles that …

Immunohistochemical Investigation Of Wwp1 Expression During Embryonic Heart Development And Its Implications For Cardiac Aging, Savannah L. Bowers Apr 2023

Immunohistochemical Investigation Of Wwp1 Expression During Embryonic Heart Development And Its Implications For Cardiac Aging, Savannah L. Bowers

Senior Theses

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality globally, with the aging population being most vulnerable. Cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts mediate pathophysiological changes of cardiac aging including interstitial fibrosis, left ventricular hypertrophy, lethal arrhythmias, and eventual culmination in heart failure. Interestingly, subclinical congenital heart disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, originating in embryonic development, induce accelerated cardiac aging. The diverse developmental origins of cardiac fibroblasts suggest that perturbations in gene expression within this heterogeneous cell population during embryonic heart development have significant consequences for cardiac aging. Previous studies implicate the E3 ubiquitin ligase WWP1, a post-translational regulatory protein, in accelerated cardiac aging. …

Nine excerpts were coded humorous, and two excerpts were coded non-humorous for control. There was a …

The Widened Hearthstone Urban Playgrounds As The Infrastructure Of Public Mothering, 1900-1930, Alexandra Miller Apr 2023

The Widened Hearthstone Urban Playgrounds As The Infrastructure Of Public Mothering, 1900-1930, Alexandra Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the limitations on their formal political involvement, women across the United States took control of the Progressive Era playground movement, and playground advocates nationwide argued that urban play spaces constructed motherhood into the city. While many mothers used playgrounds for child care, playground directors used the maternal authority constructed into playgrounds to promote their ideas about ideal citizenship. One playground director, Mabel E. Macomber, called this aspect of playground work the “'mother' element,” believing, as did other workers and advocates, that playgrounds were part of the apparatus of urban mothering, and in the case of many poor working women, …

Aerosolized Immunotherapeutic Nanoparticle Inhalation Potentiates Pd-L1 Blockade For Locally Advanced Lung Cancer, Yang Liu, William N Crowe, Lulu Wang, W Jeffrey Petty, Amyn A Habib, Dawen Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Despite therapeutic advancements, the prognosis of locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LANSCLC), which has invaded multiple lobes or the other lung and intrapulmonary lymph nodes, remains poor. The emergence of immunotherapy with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) is transforming cancer treatment. However, only a fraction of lung cancer patients benefit from ICB. Significant clinical evidence suggests that the proinflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression correlate positively with response to the PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. We report here a liposomal nanoparticle loaded with cyclic dinucleotide and aerosolized (AeroNP-CDN) for inhalation delivery to deep-seated lung tumors and target CDN to …

Sensing Fear: Fast And Precise Threat Evaluation In Human Sensory Cortex, Wen Li, Andreas Keil Apr 2023

Sensing Fear: Fast And Precise Threat Evaluation In Human Sensory Cortex, Wen Li, Andreas Keil

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Animal models of threat processing have evolved beyond the amygdala to incorporate a distributed neural network. In human research, evidence has intensified in recent years to challenge the canonical threat circuitry centered on the amygdala, urging revision of threat conceptualization. A strong surge of research into threat processing in the sensory cortex in the past decade has generated particularly useful insights to inform the reconceptualization. Here, synthesizing findings from both animal and human research, we highlight sensitive, specific, and adaptable threat representations in the sensory cortex, arising from experience-based sculpting of sensory coding networks. We thus propose that the human …

Craniosynostosis is a congenital anomaly characterized by the premature fusion of cranial sutures. Sutures are a critical connective tissue that regulates bone growth; their aberrant fusion results in abnormal shapes of the head and face. The molecular and cellular mechanisms have been investigated for a long time, but knowledge gaps remain between genetic mutations and mechanisms of pathogenesis for craniosynostosis. We previously demonstrated that the augmentation of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling through constitutively active BMP type 1A receptor (caBmpr1a) in neural crest cells (NCCs) caused the development of premature fusion of the anterior frontal suture, leading to craniosynostosis in …

Seed Amplification Assay For The Detection Of Pathologic Alpha-Synuclein Aggregates In Cerebrospinal Fluid, Luis Concha-Marambio, Sandra Pritzkow, Mohammad Shahnawaz, Carly M Farris, Claudio Soto

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Misfolded alpha-synuclein (αSyn) aggregates are a hallmark event in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other synucleinopathies. Recently, αSyn seed amplification assays (αSyn-SAAs) have shown promise as a test for biochemical diagnosis of synucleinopathies. αSyn-SAAs use the intrinsic self-replicative nature of misfolded αSyn aggregates (seeds) to multiply them in vitro. In these assays, αSyn seeds circulating in biological fluids are amplified by a cyclical process that includes aggregate fragmentation into smaller self-propagating seeds, followed by elongation at the expense of recombinant αSyn (rec-αSyn). Amplification of the seeds allows detection by fluorescent dyes specific for amyloids, such as thioflavin T. Several αSyn-SAA reports …

mRNA delivery enables the specific synthesis of proteins with therapeutic potential, representing a powerful strategy in diseases lacking efficacious pharmacotherapies. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic lung disease characterized by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and subsequent alveolar remodeling. Alveolar epithelial type 2 cells (AEC2) and fibroblasts represent important targets in IPF given their role in initiating and driving aberrant wound healing responses that lead to excessive ECM deposition. Our objective was to examine a lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based mRNA construct as a viable strategy to target alveolar epithelial cells and fibroblasts in IPF. mRNA-containing LNPs measuring ∼34 nm had …

Diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration are common retinal diseases with shared pathophysiology, including oxidative stress-induced inflammation. Cellular mechanisms responsible for converting oxidative stress into retinal damage are ill-defined but have begun to clarify. One common outcome of retinal oxidative stress is mitochondrial damage and subsequent release of mitochondrial DNA into the cytosol. This leads to activation of the cGAS-STING pathway, resulting in interferon release and disease-amplifying inflammation. This review summarizes the evolving link between aberrant cGAS-STING signaling and inflammation in common retinal diseases and provides prospective for targeting this system in diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Further defining …

A Device For Measuring Acoustic Output Intensity Of Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound Transducers For Comparison With Fda Regulations, Sarah Altman, Gregory Bashford, Benjamin Hage

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography (TCD) is a non-invasive methodology which can evaluate cerebral blood flow velocity in real time. Single-element focused circular transducers placed on the scalp produce ultrasound waves capable of penetrating the skull with minimal aberration, enabling measurement of the Doppler shift. As such, TCD can measure blood flow velocity in the internal carotid and vertebral arteries, as well as the arteries of the Circle of Willis: the Anterior Cerebral (ACA), Posterior Cerebral (PCA), and Middle Cerebral Arteries (MCA). Intracranial aneurysm and ischemic stroke are serious conditions in which ballooning or occlusion of cerebral vessels cause insufficient perfusion, leading …

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Assemblages In Cap De Creus Natural Park In Relation To Marine Protection Levels, Depth, And Habitat, Kathleen Cieri

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Mediterranean Sea has a long history of fishing exploitation that has led to a decline in the populations of many fish species. In order to preserve fish stocks and fishing interests, marine protected areas (MPAs) were established in some areas in the late 1970s. Studies have shown that where no-take areas have been enforced, they have resulted in greater abundance, body size, biomass, and diversity of commercially harvested fish species.

The Cap de Creus Natural Park in Girona, Spain was established in 1998. The park is divided into three management zones: a park zone, a partial reserve, and an …

Clean Air For All? An Analysis Of Eu Air Pollution Legislation And Health Inequality, Bonnie Nolan Apr 2023

Clean Air For All? An Analysis Of Eu Air Pollution Legislation And Health Inequality, Bonnie Nolan

The International Law Review Association Student Forum

Communities around the world face health risks due to air pollution. These health risks can include asthma, cognitive impairment, and even death. But these negative health effects are not equally spread among communities. Studies have established that air pollution affects socially disadvantaged areas more. The correlation between socioeconomic levels and increased risk of environmental harm is referred to as environmental inequality. The World Health Organization has found that environmental health inequality occurs in every European Union (EU) member country. The EU has implemented multiple pieces of legislation to reduce air pollution, including Directive 2008/50/EC, which sets specific air quality that …
