The Solitary Sinking Phytoplankton Cell And The Biological Carbon Pump, Annie Bodel
The Solitary Sinking Phytoplankton Cell And The Biological Carbon Pump, Annie Bodel
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Quantitative and taxonomic resolution of the particles exported into the mesopelagic is necessary to provide the missing mechanistic connections that determine the strength of the oceanic Biological Carbon Pump (biological pump) and more specifically the fate of sinking carbon through the region of highest remineralization, the upper twilight zone (~95-500 m deep). Through the investigation of phytoplankton cells that individually settled into polyacrylamide gel layers (gels) in two oceanic basins, we were able to quantify the export of single phytoplankton cells in the upper mesopelagic. Solitary sinking phytoplankton cell (SSPC) fluxes were inventoried extensively in three successive deployments of sediment …
Optimizing Cybersecurity Risk In Medical Cyber-Physical Devices, Christopher S. Yoo, Bethany C. Lee
Optimizing Cybersecurity Risk In Medical Cyber-Physical Devices, Christopher S. Yoo, Bethany C. Lee
William & Mary Law Review
Medical devices are increasingly connected, both to cyber networks and to sensors collecting data from physical stimuli. These cyber-physical systems pose a new host of deadly security risks that traditional notions of cybersecurity struggle to take into account. Previously, we could predict how algorithms would function as they drew on defined inputs. But cyber-physical systems draw on unbounded inputs from the real world. Moreover, with wide networks of cyber-physical medical devices, a single cybersecurity breach could pose lethal dangers to masses of patients.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is tasked with regulating medical devices to ensure safety and …
Dnp Final Report: Preventing Critical Care Nurse Burnout: An Evidence Based Approach To Raising Awareness, Trendalyn S. King
Dnp Final Report: Preventing Critical Care Nurse Burnout: An Evidence Based Approach To Raising Awareness, Trendalyn S. King
DNP Final Reports
Burnout has affected nurses nationally and globally for decades. Burnout in nurses is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of feelings of personal accomplishment. Consequences of burnout include physical and emotional suffering in nurses, poorer patient outcomes, and lost revenue and increased cost in healthcare organizations. Burnout is prevalent in many healthcare settings, but 81% of critical care nurses have reported severe symptoms of burnout, Because of the high risk of burnout in critical care nurses, raising awareness about burnout and its prevention in those nurses was imperative. The following PICOT question guided the search for evidence to support …
Female Perpetrators Of Ritually Motivated Pedicide And Mutilation Of Children, Chima Agazue
Female Perpetrators Of Ritually Motivated Pedicide And Mutilation Of Children, Chima Agazue
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Ritually motivated pedicide is among contemporary Africa’s most severe crimes against children. Most of these crimes involve brutal acts of violence or mutilation of the victim. While men are most often the perpetrators of violent crimes, ritually motivated pedicide and mutilation equally attract women. The role of women in these crimes is not restricted to the less violent aspects of the crimes; instead, they also extend to the most brutal elements, often involving mutilation, decapitation or outright murder of the victim. This article explored the involvement of women in these crimes that target children for mutilation and pedicide. The article …

Blind As A Bat: Acoustic Differences Within A Bat Swarm Soundscape Based On Location, Keegan Eveland
Inquiry Journal Spring 2023
In the fall of 2022, I participated in an independent research project under the mentorship of Dr.Kloepper in the Ecological Acoustics and Behavior lab. I decided to delve into a project that shed light on an underrepresented animal, bats. Bats are proficient at producing echolocation pulses that they utilize to their advantage to hunt and navigate cluttered areas. I investigated how Tadarida brasiliensis (the Brazilian free-tailed bat), that lives in colonies of thousands, may shift their echolocation so they can distinguish their own calls from the cacophony of sound when flying all together. A trained Harris’s hawk carried a microphone/camera …
Startup Biases, Jennifer S. Fan
Startup Biases, Jennifer S. Fan
Articles
This Article provides an original descriptive account of bias in the startup context and explains why litigation is eschewed and what happens when it is used as a mechanism to combat bias in the venture capital ecosystem. Further, this Article identifies two particular phenomena in the startup context that exacerbate gender and racial bias. First, homophily—the idea that like attracts like—abounds and has been part of the DNA of venture capital since its inception. The thick networks that developed as venture capital made its way from the East Coast to the West Coast were limited to an elite group that …
Jury-Related Errors In Copyright, Zahr K. Said
Jury-Related Errors In Copyright, Zahr K. Said
Articles
Copyright law is surprisingly hard. Copyright does not do what laypeople think it does, nor do its terms mean what laypeople expect. Copyright also possesses systemic indeterminacy about what it protects and the extent of that protection. For laypeople, copyright law is decidedly “user-unfriendly.” Nonetheless, copyright law reserves for lay jurors its most-litigated, most difficult, and most consequential question at trial: whether works are “substantially similar” and thus infringing.
Many have criticized this allocation because in the context of copyright law, juries effectively have the power to expand or contract owners’ rights with little oversight or correction. But blaming the …

Teaching Slavery In Commercial Law, Carliss N. Chatman
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Public status shapes private ordering. Personhood status, conferred or acknowledged by the state, determines whether one is a party to or the object of a contract. For much of our nation’s history, the law deemed all persons of African descent to have a limited status, if given personhood at all. The property and partial personhood status of African-Americans, combined with standards developed to facilitate the growth of the international commodities market for products including cotton, contributed to the current beliefs of business investors and even how communities of color are still governed and supported. The impact of that shift in …

Pillage As The Political Economy Of The Kurdish Anfal Genocide, Kaziwa Salih
Pillage As The Political Economy Of The Kurdish Anfal Genocide, Kaziwa Salih
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Scholars are critical of how economists overlook “the questions of genocide,” and of how legislatures have not paid adequate attention to the subject of looting, except in the case of the Armenian genocide. This article, informed by interdisciplinary perspectives, uses government documents, data, and semi-structured interviews to discuss the overlooked triangle of looting, economics, and the Anfal genocide of the Kurds in Iraq. The study refuses to limit itself only to the eight stages of the Anfal genocide that started in 1988, and instead offers data on its preliminary phases which occurred earlier in the 1980s. It then discusses the …

Hypersecretory malignant cells underlie therapeutic resistance, metastasis, and poor clinical outcomes. However, the molecular basis for malignant hypersecretion remains obscure. Here, we showed that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) initiates exocytic and endocytic vesicular trafficking programs in lung cancer. The EMT-activating transcription factor zinc finger E-box–binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) executed a PI4KIIIβ-to-PI4KIIα (PI4K2A) dependency switch that drove PI4P synthesis in the Golgi and endosomes. EMT enhanced the vulnerability of lung cancer cells to PI4K2A small- molecule antagonists. PI4K2A formed a MYOIIA-containing protein complex that facilitated secretory vesicle biogenesis in the Golgi, thereby establishing a hypersecretory state involving osteopontin (SPP1) and other prometastatic …

The great diversity of color patterns observed among amphibians is largely explained by the differentiation of relatively few pigment cell types during development. Mexican axolotls present a variety of color phenotypes that span the continuum from leucistic to highly melanistic. The melanoid axolotl is a Mendelian variant characterized by large numbers of melanophores, proportionally fewer xanthophores, and no iridophores. Early studies of melanoid were influential in developing the single-origin hypothesis of pigment cell development, wherein it has been proposed that all three pigment cell types derive from a common progenitor cell, with pigment metabolites playing potential roles in directing the …

Brain glucose metabolism is highly heterogeneous among brain regions and continues postmortem. In particular, we demonstrate exhaustion of glycogen and glucose and an increase in lactate production during conventional rapid brain resection and preservation by liquid nitrogen. In contrast, we show that these post- mortem changes are not observed with simultaneous animal sacrifice and in situ fixation with focused, high- power microwave. We further employ microwave fixation to define brain glucose metabolism in the mouse model of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes. Using both total pool and isotope tracing analyses, we identified global glucose hypometabolism in multiple brain regions, evidenced by …

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Infectious Causes Of Congenital Morbidity And Mortality In Central America: Torch, El Salvador, Mary Katherine Lynn
Theses and Dissertations
The primary goal of this dissertation was to understand the prevalence of the most regionally salient TORCH pathogens among a group of perinatal women from a highly vulnerable region of El Salvador at the time of parturition. TORCH pathogens, that cause TORCH congenital syndromes, are classically defined as Toxoplasma gondii, other infectious causes of concern (Zika virus, malaria, human immunodeficiency virus, etc), Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus(CMV), and Herpes Simplex Viruses. These infections can be passed from mother to fetus through the placenta or other perinatal routes and cause severe maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. This dissertation sought to understand perinatal …

Tragic Relief!, Katherine Shanks
Theses and Dissertations
This poetry manuscript explores loneliness, sexuality, violence, gender/fluidity, the self, the idea of the self, and American capitalism with an irreverent and dry humor. Tragicomic in tone, the poems balance a sense of dire exuberance with personal history and anecdote ranging from sentimental to sarcastic to withering. Located in New Jersey, the manuscript engages with local history, lore, and culture. A wide range of references bridge various ends of the literary canon, while the poems likewise reach for referents from fine art, music, TV, and film. Characters recur as figures of patriarchy, capitalistic work ethic, and gender trouble in various …

I have created my thesis body of work by researching children's book illustrations and distorted portraits by various artists. My illustrations are based on my book, The Adventures of Henry and Isabella: Battle of Proerable, inspired by the Disney films The Chronicles of Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, How to Build a Better Boy, and Kim Possible series. My distorted portraits of friends and family represent their personality traits. Even though the illustrations and portraits follow the style of European artists Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee, they are distinguished from the artists’ styles. The …
The Effects Of Gamified Peer Feedback On Student Writing In High School English Language Arts, Kerise Amaris Broome
The Effects Of Gamified Peer Feedback On Student Writing In High School English Language Arts, Kerise Amaris Broome
Theses and Dissertations
National assessments on writing show that student proficiency is low in part because many high school students lack revision skills. Compounding the problem is that as classroom sizes grow, teachers have less time to give the feedback that students need to improve. Peer feedback shows promise in being able to solve the feedback problem, but it must be carefully structured to be effective. The purpose of this action research was to evaluate the impact of gamified peer feedback in a high school English Language Arts classroom at Southern Charter High School. Three research questions guided this study: (1) What impact …
Genetic Mechanisms Underlying Maladaptation In Specialized Species Interactions, Nitin Ravikanthachari
Genetic Mechanisms Underlying Maladaptation In Specialized Species Interactions, Nitin Ravikanthachari
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptation has been used as the framework to understand the power of natural selection in structuring biodiversity and driving biological interactions. However, recent examples have indicated that many organisms are maladapted to their local conditions. Maladaptation can result from various causes including rapid environmental change, novel environments, interplay of evolutionary forces (viz: gene flow-selection balance) and anthropogenic disturbance.
To dissect the genetic mechanisms underlying maladaptation, I used the interaction between Pieris macdunnoughii (Remington) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) which lays eggs on an invasive mustard Thlaspi arvense (L.) (Brassicaceae), which is lethal to the larvae.
First, local adaptation to avoid laying eggs on …
Animal Representation Of Race In The Princess And The Frog, Tiffany Tyantyan Enoch
Animal Representation Of Race In The Princess And The Frog, Tiffany Tyantyan Enoch
Theses and Dissertations
Disney’s 2009 film The Princess and the Frog was created in response to racial criticism. It features the first Black princess as a means of promoting racial equality. This film attempts to positively portray Black characters, who were depicted as violent and lazy in previous animations.
While the film showcases positive themes (e.g., internal beauty and virtuous work) and portrays Black characters in a more positive light than previous films, it still perpetuates the typical racism against people of color. The lack of accurate and equal representation of racial groups in recognizable and famous stories is a persistent issue, and …

Impacts Of Habitat, Resource Addition, And Predator Exclusion On Rodent Community Structure And Hantaviruses In The Neotropics, Briana Spruill-Harrell
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Understanding how climate and human land use change impacts trophic interactions is essential in the face of ongoing biodiversity loss and the continued emergence of RNA viruses and zoonosis. Human land use changes such as agricultural expansion, deforestation, and habitat degradation all have been linked to zoonotic disease emergence. Despite these commonalities, our mechanistic understanding of what drives them is lacking. Moreover, genomic surveillance in wildlife populations is critical for risk assessment and mitigation. Herein, using data collected from field studies within the Reserva Natural del Bosque Mbaracayú (RNBM), a protected area of the Interior Atlantic Forest (IAF), I examined …

Simple Darwin Core For Non-Biologists Primer, Megan N. O'Donnell, Leslie M. Delserone
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
This primer focuses on Simple DwC (http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/simple/), a “mechanism used to share biodiversity information using the simplest methods and structure” (Darwin Core Task Group, 2014). With Simple DwC, the DwC schema is applied to a single flat file (i.e., table or spreadsheet). Because it is a self-contained data set that can be opened, edited, and analyzed using a wide variety of software, Simple DwC is easier to implement than other forms of DwC that use XML, RDF, or relational databases. The primer’s goal is to assist a curator presented with a data set structured in Simple DwC, or …

Cellular Resistance Mechanisms In Cancer And The New Approaches To Overcome Resistance Mechanisms Chemotherapy, Ali A. Rabaan
Saudi Medical Journal
Despite major advancements in cancer healing approaches over the last few decades, chemotherapy remains the most popular malignancy treatment. Chemotherapeutic drugs are classified into many kinds based on their mechanism of action. Multidrug resistance (MDR) is responsible for approximately 90% of fatalities in malignancy cases treated with standard chemotherapeutics or innovative targeted medicines. Many innovative prospective anti-cancer medicines displayed high anti-cancer efficacy in a single application. However, combining them with other medications improves cancer treatment efficacy. This supports the belief that a combination of drugs is significantly more effective than a single medicine. Due to the intricacy of MDR processes …

Maximising Effectiveness Of Talent Pools Through Mindfulness: An Empirical Investigation In A Multinational Corporation, Tarmo Raudsepp
Maximising Effectiveness Of Talent Pools Through Mindfulness: An Empirical Investigation In A Multinational Corporation, Tarmo Raudsepp
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Traditional human resource management is looking to identify and develop talent for maximising human capital in a competitive environment with limited resources and negative demographic trends. Attracting, deploying, motivating, developing and retaining talented employees is a corporate norm for meeting organisational goals. Proper human resource processes through rigorous mapping of employees according to the performance-potential matrix allow the grading of employees against peer groups to establish talent pools for development and internal succession planning.
Mindfulness originates from 2,500-year-old Buddhist spiritual practices and has a rare combination of spirituality and science. Eastern perspective originates from Asian traditions focusing on the self-regulation …
