Mitochondria are critical to cellular and organismal health. To prevent damage, mitochondria have evolved protein quality control machines to survey and maintain the mitochondrial proteome. SKD3, also known as CLPB, is a ring-forming, ATP-fueled protein disaggregase essential for preserving mitochondrial integrity and structure. SKD3 deficiency causes 3-methylglutaconic aciduria type VII (MGCA7) and early death in infants, while mutations in the ATPase domain impair protein disaggregation with the observed loss-of-function correlating with disease severity. How mutations in the non-catalytic N-domain cause disease is unknown. Here, we show that the disease-associated N-domain mutation, Y272C, forms an intramolecular disulfide bond with Cys267 and …

Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) is a key mediator of type-I interferon (IFN-I) signaling in response to a variety of stimuli, but the contribution of STING to homeostatic processes is not fully characterized. Previous studies showed that ligand activation of STING limits osteoclast differentiation in vitro through the induction of IFNβ and IFN-I interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). In a disease model (SAVI) driven by the V154M gain-of-function mutation in STING, fewer osteoclasts form from SAVI precursors in response to receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) in an IFN-I-dependent manner. Due to the described role of STING-mediated regulation of osteoclastogenesis in activation …

Craniofacial microsomia (CFM; also known as Goldenhar syndrome), is a craniofacial developmental disorder of variable expressivity and severity with a recognizable set of abnormalities. These birth defects are associated with structures derived from the first and second pharyngeal arches, can occur unilaterally and include ear dysplasia, microtia, preauricular tags and pits, facial asymmetry and other malformations. The inheritance pattern is controversial, and the molecular etiology of this syndrome is largely unknown. A total of 670 patients belonging to unrelated pedigrees with European and Chinese ancestry with CFM, are investigated. We identify 18 likely pathogenic variants in 21 probands (3.1%) in …

Sailing Towards Freedom: Discourses Of Domination And Resistance In Online Piracy Communities, Lewie Andrew Carmichael
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
For this study, 22 people over 18 years of age who illicitly downloaded media, sometimes called ‘pirates,’ were interviewed to explore how they accounted for their behavior and their communities. They claimed poverty, convenience, habit, archiving, and fun as their primary motivations for piracy. A Pirate Bill of Rights is proposed to represent foundational ethics from which many participants drew their basic moral and ethical assumptions. James C. Scott’s transcript theory is used to frame how pirates perceive domination and how piracy acts as a form of resistance against it. The concepts of the ‘pirate other’ and the ‘corporate other’ …
Impact Of Particle Sizes On Mri Signal Relaxation In Phantoms For Assessment Of Hepatic Steatosis And Iron Overload, Sarah Caroline Brasher
Impact Of Particle Sizes On Mri Signal Relaxation In Phantoms For Assessment Of Hepatic Steatosis And Iron Overload, Sarah Caroline Brasher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is emerging as a powerful tool to non-invasively evaluate diffuse liver diseases such as hepatic steatosis and iron overload. To test new MRI techniques, phantom studies are utilized in place of patients but often do not consider the microscopic interactions of particles suspended in the media which may cause a notable difference in the signal. Hence, this study investigates the impact of differing particle sizes on the magnetic resonance signal using phantoms. To accomplish this, steatosis phantoms were created using two different mixing methods to control droplet size and while combination iron-fat phantoms featuring iron particles …

Neutrosophic Marcos In Decision Making On Smart Manufacturing System, Nivetha Martin, Said Broumi, S. Sudha, R. Priya
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Business firms prefer software-based smart manufacturing systems to monitor and supervise all production activities in a decentralized manner. The choice of software decides the degree of manufacturing robustness. This paper proposes a neutrosophic-based MARCOS (Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to COmpromise Solution) method of MCDM with single-valued triangular neutrosophic numbers to solve the software selection problem. The proposed neutrosophic method is applied to hypothetical data to test the efficacy of the method. The results obtained using the proposed method are compared with crisp, fuzzy, and intuitionistic data representations, and suitable inferences are acquired. The proposed method has several industrial …
Evaluating The Past And Charting The Future Of Human Rights Education, J. Paul Martin, Snigdha Dutt
Evaluating The Past And Charting The Future Of Human Rights Education, J. Paul Martin, Snigdha Dutt
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article provides an overview of the field of human rights education (HRE) using an input/output schema. It examines the challenges encountered at the delivery points where instructors must contextualize the now extensive corpus of human rights documents and practices to meet the needs, and the political and cultural traditions, of their particular target population. The challenges also point to the dominance of prescriptive over evaluative HRE literature, the degree to which HRE is not a stand-alone activity and the limited HRE-specific teacher training. The authors therefore call for more research on the long-term HRE outcomes of human rights education …
Ordinary Solidarities: Re-Reading Refugee Education Response Through An Anticolonial Discursive Framework, Zeena Zakharia
Ordinary Solidarities: Re-Reading Refugee Education Response Through An Anticolonial Discursive Framework, Zeena Zakharia
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Growing attention to longstanding issues linked to racism and coloniality in humanitarian assistance has impelled important conversations about power inequities in global education spaces and their related scholarly fields. This paper contributes to these conversations by advancing an anticolonial discursive framework for rights-based interventions in and through education. Drawing on a three-year case study of one faith-based school in Lebanon, this paper explores how one ordinary school in a refugee hostile transit country secured and protected the right to education for refugee children from Syria, within a significant broader context of multiple compounding crises. The notion of “ordinary solidarities” is …
Forecasting Winners And Losers Of Climate Change: Insights From The Interactions Between Organisms And Their Microclimates, Michael Sears
Forecasting Winners And Losers Of Climate Change: Insights From The Interactions Between Organisms And Their Microclimates, Michael Sears
Sustainability Seminar Series
Meaningful forecasts of the responses of organisms to climate require an explicit understanding of how organismal behavior and physiology are affected by environmental heterogeneity. Such predictions are complicated because physiology and behavior vary over different time scales, vary across different life stages, and do not operate in isolation of one another. In this talk, I review case studies from my lab to highlight progress that has been made along these fronts and provide generalizations that might be made to other systems, particularly in the context of predicting responses to climate change.

An Early Enriched Diet And Its Effect On Invertebrates (Blaberus Discoidalus), Diego De Gregorio
An Early Enriched Diet And Its Effect On Invertebrates (Blaberus Discoidalus), Diego De Gregorio
2023 Student Academic Showcase
Research with multiple animal species suggests that experiencing enriched diets and environmental conditions during early development facilitates positive outcomes in neurogenesis, associative learning, and memory (Cayre et al., 2007; Maegele et al., 2015; Mallory et al., 2016), social behavior (Oddi et al., 2015), and sensory system function (Leong et al., 2015). Whether the developmental gains that enriched environments provide apply similarly to all invertebrate species remains unknown. This study will help close this gap in the literature. To answer our research question, 120 nymph cockroaches were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions (40 subjects per condition) in which …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
There are growing concerns relating to current Nigerian agricultural food production practices and its impact on human nutrition. There is mounting evince that our current food system is responsible for diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Agricultural literacy is possessing knowledge and understanding of our food and fiber system. For citizens to be minimally educated about agricultural practices, agricultural literacy is important for both the individual and for the industries. An individual must be well informed to make responsible choices in matters of food and fiber. Improving agricultural literacy by understanding the needs of the society, as it relates to …
Habitat Effects On Scorpion Densities And Microhabitat Use By Centruroides Vittatus And Vaejovis Waueri In South Texas, Jonathan Beltran
Habitat Effects On Scorpion Densities And Microhabitat Use By Centruroides Vittatus And Vaejovis Waueri In South Texas, Jonathan Beltran
Theses and Dissertations
Co-existence between Centruroides vittatus and Vaejovis waueri is influenced by environmental factors that shape their habitats. Differences in surface activity frequency between the two species suggest differential microhabitat use. The observed frequency of scorpions using microhabitats in the Martinez Ranch and La Union Ranch were not significantly different from the expected frequencies. Frequency of scorpions observed using microhabitats in La Union South was significantly different from the expected frequency (P<0.001). Microhabitat use of catclaw was lower than expected and higher than expected for other vegetation. Conditional comparisons of microhabitats were significantly different among habitats (P<0.001), size classes were significantly different among microhabitats (P<0.001), and size classes were significantly different among habitats (P<0.01). Microhabitat use by scorpions on the ground was higher among all habitats. Scorpion use of ground and grass were different among size classes. Size class I-II scorpions had a higher frequency than size class III. Scorpion density for C. vittatus was significantly different among habitats (P<0.0001) and scorpion density for V. waueri was significantly different among habitats (P<0.0001). Centruroides vittatus was significantly higher in the Martinez Ranch and in La Union South. Vaejovis waueri was significantly higher in La iv Union South. Associations between plant densities and scorpion size classes were tested. Plant densities had a significant association with C. vittatus size classes I and II in the Martinez Ranch. Association between plants had a significant correlation with C. vittatus size classes I and IV in La Union Ranch. Association between plants had a significant correlation with V. waueri’s total density. These associations may suggest plant densities may have a synergistic effect on scorpion densities. Soil type composition for the different habitats was hypothesized to influence scorpion densities. Maps for each site were created to show soil type compositions. Soil type findings suggest that La Union South had the soil types with the lowest soil strength. Vaejovis waueri was shown to have a higher density in La Union South where soils are sandier. Results indicate that co-existence between C. vittatus and V. waueri is possible because competition is low through minimal overlap in microhabitat use and intraguild predation avoidance.

On my birth certificate are the names of my parents, though the name of my father stands in opposition to my genealogy. The script of his signature conceals my birth as donor conceived (DC). The truth of my origin would lay dormant for years behind his scrawl, burying my true heritage beneath the stories of my social father’s ancestry.
Learning the truth, I began to reevaluate my identity. Searching for myself along waterways, I explored the shores of the Platte River as if by knowing its sandbars, flora, and fauna, I would come to know myself. In searching the land, …

Pancreatitis is a condition that causes inflammation in the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. This condition often presents as neuropathic, inflammatory, and/or visceral pain. Acute pancreatitis is typically characterized by sudden and severe abdominal pain, often in the upper right part of the abdomen. The pain from pancreatitis can be caused by different mechanisms, such as abnormal activation of pancreatic zymogens or NF-κB mediated inflammation in the pancreas. The treatment of pancreatitis depends on its type, severity, and underlying cause. Hospitalization and medications are typically necessary, while in others, surgery may be required. Proper management of pancreatitis is …
Body In Rebellion: The Closing Body, Romantic Mesmerism, And Gothic Doubles In Hogg's Justified Sinner, Elizabeth E. Hinds
Body In Rebellion: The Closing Body, Romantic Mesmerism, And Gothic Doubles In Hogg's Justified Sinner, Elizabeth E. Hinds
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the western Romantic period as a transition between the medieval “open body” and the modern “closed body.” It focuses on “closing body” phenomena such as “mesmerism” (i.e. animal magnetism), somnambulism, substance abuse, and the “second-self,” including notions of the subconscious and the trope of gothic Doppelgängers. This study draws from many pieces of western Romantic literature but is most centered around James Hogg’s 1824 The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. This new reading of Hogg’s novel suggests a core theme of body anxiety, rather than theological dispute.

Suddenly, during the night, one awakens while dreaming – aware that this is a dream. The “rules” of action, reaction, and of form itself are not that of the waking state – one might leap in the air and fly, transform one’s body into any number of forms, reach up in the sky and grab the sun and clouds, pulling them to the side, bringing forth a canopy of moon and stars. The entire scene, in the lucid dream, has a heightened sense of radiance and joy, vitality and freedom.
Imagine this sense of lucid dreaming is occurring right here …

Electrodermal Activity In Response To Stress Reduction: Virtual Reality Experience In Hydrotherapy And Non-Hydrotherapy Environments, Nthabeleng Macdonald
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Hydrotherapy, a holistic alternative medicine, uses methods like water therapy, cold water immersion, and balneotherapy to treat physical and mental illnesses while inducing tranquility (Bahadorfar, 2014). In this study, the water therapy approach was used, but with a unique twist. Rather than traditional hydrotherapy involving direct contact with water, participants were fully immersed in a virtual reality water environment. This study investigated whether immersing individuals with psychological stress in an underwater environment via virtual reality (VR) reduces their stress levels as compared to a non-hydrotherapy virtual city environment. The effects of underwater scenery versus non-hydrotherapy city scenery individuals experiencing stress …

The severe consequences of the Zika virus (ZIKV) infections resulting in congenital Zika syndrome in infants and the autoimmune Guillain–Barre syndrome in adults warrant the development of safe and efficacious vaccines and therapeutics. Currently, there are no approved treatment options for ZIKV infection. Herein, we describe the development of a bacterial ferritin-based nanoparticle vaccine candidate for ZIKV. The viral envelope (E) protein domain III (DIII) was fused in-frame at the amino-terminus of ferritin. The resulting nanoparticle displaying the DIII was examined for its ability to induce immune responses and protect vaccinated animals upon lethal virus challenge. Our results show that …
The Genomics Of Autism-Related Genes Il1rapl1 And Il1rapl2: Insights Into Their Cortical Distribution, Cell-Type Specificity, And Developmental Trajectories, Jacob Weaver
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Neuropsychiatric disorders have a significant impact on modern society. These disorders affect a large percentage of the population: schizophrenia has a world-wide prevalence of 1% and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) affects 1 in 59 school-aged children in the US. There is substantial evidence that most neuropsychiatric disorders have a genetic component. Thus, with the advent of high throughput sequencing much effort has gone into identifying genetic variants associated with these disorders. The emerging picture from these studies is a complex one where hundreds of genes with small effects interact with a varied landscape of common variants to result in disease. …

Membership Probabilities Of White Dwarfs In Open Star Clusters, Sarah Phillips
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between astronomical position data and star cluster membership. Our research project focuses on the mathematical probability of cluster membership for white dwarf stars (WDs), specifically membership candidates within the open cluster Messier 35. Through Gaussian analysis of proper motion data, we examine the membership probability of each candidate. Establishing cluster membership has broad applications and can allow further determination of a star’s characteristics including stellar age and evolution. Of particular interest are two WD member candidates for Messier 35: LAWDS 4, a DB WD with a helium-dominated atmosphere as opposed to the more common hydrogen-dominated …
