Ecofeminism: Gender And Word Associations, Caroline Murray
Ecofeminism: Gender And Word Associations, Caroline Murray
Undergraduate Research Competition
Ecofeminism is the environmental philosophy that finds an association between nature and the female gender in society. Using correlational design, in the current study the associations between gender and nature terms and gender and occupations were examined in 106 college aged students (Mage = 19 years, 4 months, 10% male, 89% female, 79% White). Using a word association test created for the use in the current study, participants reported their association between nature terms, human-made terms, and occupations using a 11-response scale ranging from 0= "Little to no association" (low masculinity, low femininity) to 10= "Masculine" or "Feminine." Findings indicated …

Analyzing Post-Fledging Movements, Survival, And Space Use Of First-Year Black Vultures (Coragyps Atratus) In Kentucky, Philip Kavouriaris, Andrea Darracq
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
The time span between a fledgling’s first flight from the nest and dispersal from its natal area is known as the post-fledging dependence period. This period is a critical life stage because it affects an individual’s survival and recruitment into adult populations. In Black Vultures, young birds learn to navigate their environment but remain dependent on their parents for food during this prolonged period. We analyzed movement data from nine fledglings equipped with backpack-mounted solar-powered transmitters (GPS/GSM 20-70 PTT, 45g, Microwave Telemetry, Inc.), which included over 450,000 locations collected over a period of approximately 250 days. Home range sizes and …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
In this long-term storage study, we optimized the lyophilization conditions of each reaction stage of a nucleic acid-based assay for SARS-CoV-2 detection. The stability testing demonstrated that the dried reactions from all 3 steps (cDNA synthesis, isothermal amplification and detection) can be kept at -20°C or 4°C for up to 6 or 3 months, respectively, whereas, if stored at 25°C or 37°C, the reagents only could be stored for a few days without quality loss. This suggests that we can have the dried reactions at -20°C for long-term storage until needed. Moreover, this assay is now simpler to perform as …

20 Years After The Iraq War: Stories And Perspectives, Alissa Walter
Speakers & Events
April 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq. The 2003 Iraq War was a major turning point in changing the ways that Iraqis related to their own government and to their fellow citizens. Paying attention to Iraqis' stories about their lives under Saddam Hussein's dictatorship and during the tumultuous two decades that followed his fall sheds light on the forces that can unify or divide a society during periods of crisis and upheaval.

Faculty Research 2023
Outbred laboratory mice (Mus musculus) are readily available and have high fecundity, making them a popular choice in biomedical research, especially toxicological and pharmacological applications. Direct high throughput genome sequencing (HTS) of these widely used research animals is an important genetic quality control measure that enhances research reproducibility. HTS data have been used to confirm the common origin of outbred stocks and to molecularly define distinct outbred populations. But these data have also revealed unexpected population structure and homozygosity in some populations; genetic features that emerge when outbred stocks are not properly maintained. We used exome sequencing to discover and …
Which Mouse Multiparental Population Is Right For Your Study? The Collaborative Cross Inbred Strains, Their F1 Hybrids, Or The Diversity Outbred Population., Gregory R Keele
Faculty Research 2023
Multiparental populations (MPPs) encompass greater genetic diversity than traditional experimental crosses of two inbred strains, enabling broader surveys of genetic variation underlying complex traits. Two such mouse MPPs are the Collaborative Cross (CC) inbred panel and the Diversity Outbred (DO) population, which are descended from the same eight inbred strains. Additionally, the F1 intercrosses of CC strains (CC-RIX) have been used and enable study designs with replicate outbred mice. Genetic analyses commonly used by researchers to investigate complex traits in these populations include characterizing how heritable a trait is, i.e. its heritability, and mapping its underlying genetic loci, i.e. its …

Predictors Of Medical Students’ Perceptions Of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy For Use In Medical Practice, Karina Wang, Yiqun Sun, Brenda Nava, Luke Sampiere, Robin J. Jacobs
HPD Articles
Background Psilocybin use, along with other psychedelics, has seen an increased interest among professionals in the medical community due to its potential therapeutic benefits for psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders (SUD), and palliative care. While it is certain that more research is necessary as psychedelic-assisted therapy becomes more prevalent, it will most likely be future physicians at the forefront of this neoteric care. Currently, physicians receive minimal training because of psilocybin’s contextual information and its current enlistment as a Schedule 1 drug per the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. Schedule 1 drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with …

The last decade and a half has seen a significant increase in violent right-wing activity around the world. Despite a lagged public perception, the right-wing has surpassed its Islamic counterpart as the most significant threat of extremist violence in the US and is catching up in the rest of the world. While this has been a seemingly rapid transformation, the underlying movement is not novel. Its causes are multifaceted, international, and go back decades. It is perpetrated through a variety of means and actors, from political parties to so called “lone wolf” terrorists. Its final cause is expressed by Matt …

Does Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy Violate Laws Against Human Cloning?, Kerry L. Macintosh
Faculty Publications
All human beings have mitochondria within their cells that produce energy.1 Most of us inherit healthy mitochondria through the eggs of our mothers,2 but some of us are not so lucky. Mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can cause these tiny organelles to function improperly and disrupt tissues that require a lot of energy, like the brain, kidney, liver, heart, muscle, and central nervous system.3 For example, a specific mtDNA mutation induces Leigh syndrome, a condition in which seizures and respiratory failure lead to decline in mental and motor skills, disabil- ity, and death.4 Mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) offers a solution …

Food waste (FW) has been increasingly recognized as a severe environmental, social, and economic problem. Therefore, it should be tackled innovatively by analyzing and synthesizing existing solutions. This study aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of different social innovation measures adopted for reducing FW using a systematic literature review. After locating, collecting, evaluating, and analyzing 50 publications from four databases, we conclude that social innovation activities such as digital food-sharing platforms, social supermarkets, solidarity stores, and food rescue hubs are widely deployed in different FW reduction processes. Based on the findings, we synthesized several research gaps and proposed corresponding future …

Despite strong preclinical data, the therapeutic benefit of the RANKL inhibitor, denosumab, in breast cancer patients, beyond the bone, is unclear. Aiming to select patients who may benefit from denosumab, we hereby analyzed RANK and RANKL protein expression in more than 2,000 breast tumors (777 estrogen receptor-negative, ER- ) from four independent cohorts. RANK protein expression was more frequent in ER- tumors, where it associated with poor outcome and poor response to chemotherapy. In ER- breast cancer patient-derived orthoxenografts (PDXs), RANKL inhibition reduced tumor cell proliferation and stemness, regulated tumor immunity and metabolism, and improved response to chemotherapy. Intriguingly, tumor …

Hypoxia is a prognostic biomarker of rapidly growing cancers, where the extent of hypoxia is an indication of tumor progression and prognosis; therefore, hypoxia is also used for staging while performing chemo- and radiotherapeutics for cancer. Contrast-enhanced MRI using EuII-based contrast agents is a noninvasive method that can be used to map hypoxic tumors, but quantification of hypoxia using these agents is challenging due to the dependence of signal on the concentration of both oxygen and EuII. Here, we report a ratiometric method to eliminate concentration dependence of contrast enhancement of hypoxia using fluorinated EuII/III-containing probes. We studied three different …

School of Design and Engineering Papers
Industrial hemp is a versatile, sustainable plant with several applications of its various forms, including fiber obtained from hemp stalks, food obtained from hemp seeds, and oil obtained from hemp flowers and seeds. Industrial hemp has the potential to offer a solution to the crisis of climate change, since it is a viable energy source that satisfies the three pillars of sustainability, namely economy, environment, and society. Although industrial hemp has been growing as an agricultural commodity in different parts of the world for decades, its production was banned until recently in the U.S. because of its association with marijuana. …

Background: Individuals on the autism spectrum have been long described to process sensory information differently than neurotypical individuals. While much effort has been leveraged towards characterizing and investigating the neurobiology underlying the sensory differences of autism, there has been a notable lack of consistency in the terms being used to describe the nature of those differences.
Main body: We argue that inconsistent and interchangeable terminology-use when describing the sensory differences of autism has become problematic beyond mere pedantry and inconvenience. We begin by highlighting popular terms that are currently being used to describe the sensory differences of autism (e.g. "sensitivity", …

This paper outlines a proposal, based on Blackfoot worldview, for a collective method to stand alongside Western qualitative and quantitative methods and highlights the value of collective methods in collaborative social-ecological research. Neither qualitative nor quantitative methods are adequate to disclose a world where all things are alive, where “objects” are subjects—agentive beings in their own right. Most Indigenous cultures understand and experience the world as a network of living beings, a collective, with whom they are interrelated/connected and therefore, any efforts to collaborate with Indigenous peoples must acknowledge comprehensive relational animacy. Applying coproduction principles in concert with Blackfoot ways …

Inceptisols have problem in phosphate availability. Soil P content is very low available to plants because it is bound by soil colloids. One of the efforts to increase the P nutrient in the soil in a sustainable way by using P-Solubilizers that can dissolve phosphate in the soil so that it is available for plants. The purpose of experiment was to determine the effect of the combination dose of kaolin based P-Solubilizer and P fertilizer for improving P availability, P uptake, phosphatase, and maize yield on Inceptisols. The kaolin-based P-Solubilizer was used a consortium of phosphate solubilizing microbes (PSM) consisting …
