On The Resurrection Of Microbes: An Eco-Christological Approach To The Resurrection, Denys Janiga Osb
Obsculta
This article attempts to bring ecology and Christology into conversation through a transdisciplinary approach. It looks at the pastoral implications of eco-anxiety, resurrection ecology in the field of biotechnology, Church teaching on the Resurrection, and concludes by initiating an interpretation of the resurrection appearances in the Gospel of Luke through the lens of the microbiome.
The Fall And Natural Suffering, Andrew Banacos
The Fall And Natural Suffering, Andrew Banacos
Obsculta
Evolutionary theory poses several questions for Christian notions of origins: 1) common ancestry of all creatures rather than monogenesis; 2) the violent history of evolution as a challenge to the notion of a fall from paradise into sin, death, and suffering; and 3) the relationship between suffering and evil in light of evolutionary process. This paper seeks to address the concept of the fall in the context of dialogue between evolution and the Christian faith.

The Effects Of Prenatal Buprenorphine Exposure On The Neurobehavioral Development Of The Child, Zaineb Zubair, Maryam Zubair, Juan Alonso, Abdullah Zubair
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Current guidelines for pregnant women with substance use disorder advise prenatal maintenance of opioid agonist therapy with either buprenorphine or methadone. Despite this rise in prenatal opioid agonist therapy, little is known about the effect of prenatal buprenorphine on the neurobehavioral development of the child. This poses the question: does buprenorphine have a long-lasting effect on the central and peripheral nervous system development and behavior of children who were exposed prenatally?
Methods: A comprehensive literature review identified articles relating to prenatal buprenorphine and neurobehavioral outcomes. Article searches were conducted on PubMed and Dynamed. Publications from 2002 through November 2021 …
Cannabidiol As A Synergist In Chemotherapy, Liam Pontes
Cannabidiol As A Synergist In Chemotherapy, Liam Pontes
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound commonly found in hemp and non-hemp plants. It has a molecular effect on cells, but its effect in modifying cellular signaling pathways has not been thoroughly tested until recently. Experimentation was done to determine whether CBD could induce cell death in MCF7 breast cancer cells. Both normal MCF7 cells and Cisplatin resistant MCF7 cells were used for these experiments. The cells were dosed with 0, 0.5, and 1.0 g/ml CBD dissolved in methanol. Later micrographs of the treated cells were collected and Annexin staining to determine the effect of CBD on cell death was …

Appearance Of Choline Metabolites In Plasma And Milk When Choline Is Infused Into The Abomasum With Or Without Methionine, C. J.R. Jenkins, Paul J. Kononoff
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Four lactating, ruminally cannulated Jersey cows, (mean ± standard deviation) 264 ± 54.2 d in milk and 484 ± 24.1 kg of body weight, were arranged in a 4 × 4 Latin square design to measure the effects of abomasal infusion of choline chloride with or without dl-Met on milk and plasma choline metabolites and plasma AA in cows fed a Met-deficient diet. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental treatments: (1) control; no supplemental Met or choline (CON), (2) 13 g/d of choline ion delivered via abomasal infusion (CHO), (3) 13 g/d of Met delivered via abomasal …
Differential Degeneration Of Neurons In A Mouse Model Of Canavan Disease, Vibha Chauhan, Quy Nguyen, Jeremy Francis, Paola Leone
Differential Degeneration Of Neurons In A Mouse Model Of Canavan Disease, Vibha Chauhan, Quy Nguyen, Jeremy Francis, Paola Leone
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Canavan disease (CD) is an inherited leukodystrophy caused by inactivating mutations to the glial enzyme aspartoacylase (ASPA). ASPA catabolizes neuronal N-acetylaspartate (NAA) into free acetate and aspartate and loss of this function results in the chronic elevation of non-catabolized NAA and the failure of developmental myelination. Elevated NAA is thought to cause damage to myelin and myelin-producing cells (oligodendrocytes, but the viability of neurons in CD is relatively unexplored. We compare here the progressive degeneration of neurons in two regions of the CD mouse brain, the thalamus and the cortex, distinguished by differing degrees of vacuolation, and show that the …
Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Actual Versus Assumed Opioid Experience On The Regulation Of Ventral Striatal Opioid Receptor Gene Expression, Indu Mithra Madhuranthakam, Martin Job
Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Actual Versus Assumed Opioid Experience On The Regulation Of Ventral Striatal Opioid Receptor Gene Expression, Indu Mithra Madhuranthakam, Martin Job
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Rationale: We conducted experiments to assess the effect of prior opioid experience on gene expression changes. We compared the current experimenter-imposed short versus extended-access conditions of opioid self-administration and developed a new quantitative method to determine their effectiveness in identifying the role of opioid experience in regulating opioid receptor expression levels in the ventral striatum (VS) using an oxycodone self-administration/abstinence model.
Methods: In this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=36) were trained for 20 days to self-administer oxycodone at 0.1 mg/kg/infusion under short access (n=15, or saline as controls n=3, for 3h/day) or extended access (n=15, or saline as controls n=3, …
Swallowing Disrupts Tongue-Jaw Coordination During Chewing In A Rat Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Meejan Palhang, N. Charles, Francois Gould
Swallowing Disrupts Tongue-Jaw Coordination During Chewing In A Rat Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Meejan Palhang, N. Charles, Francois Gould
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The primary motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor, are associated with difficulties regulating transitions between motor behaviors due to basal ganglia dysfunction. Chewing and swallowing, which are disordered in most patients with Parkinson’s disease, are two complex motor behaviors which overlap in time and share some neuromuscular components. The objective of this study is to identify how Parkinson’s disease affects the coordination of chewing and swallowing. We hypothesize that as a result of impaired regulation of shift between motor patterns, chewing cycles that occur with a swallow will be more affected that chewing cycles occurring in …

Chemosensory alteration is one of the major side effects of chemotherapy that can negatively impact the quality of life of cancer patients. Decreased appetite and food aversions can consequently lead to substantial reductions in food intake and thereby malnutrition and poor patient outcomes. The chemotherapeutic agent, taxane (docetaxel), is an effective choice of treatment for breast cancer, gastric cancer, or prostate cancer. Despite its major effects as an anti-cancer medication, patients under taxane treatments have reported taste alterations. Essentially, the drug disrupts normal microtubule growth by inhibiting microtubule depolymerization. By binding to ß-tubulin, a major component of mitotic spindles, docetaxel …

Understanding the mechanisms of blastocyst formation and implantation is critical for improving farm animal reproduction but is hampered by a limited supply of embryos. Here, we developed an efficient method to generate bovine blastocyst-like structures (termed blastoids) via assembling bovine trophoblast stem cells and expanded potential stem cells. Bovine blastoids resemble blastocysts in morphology, cell composition, single-cell transcriptomes, in vitro growth, and the ability to elicit maternal recognition of pregnancy following transfer to recipient cows. Bovine blastoids represent an accessible in vitro model for studying embryogenesis and improving reproductive efficiency in livestock species.
“It Takes A Village”: The Implications For Gender Roles On Appalachian Family Dynamics, Taryn Jayde Rollins
“It Takes A Village”: The Implications For Gender Roles On Appalachian Family Dynamics, Taryn Jayde Rollins
Undergraduate Theses
When we hear the word “Appalachian”, many will look towards the countless examples of negative stereotypes displayed in the media. From Hillbilly Elegy to hyperbolized stories of blue people in the mountains, Appalachians have been perpetuated as backward, dirty, incestual, and stupid. Through incessant dehumanization by the media, Appalachian communities have been ignored and even blamed for their disparities. However, there are historical and social implications factors that stemmed from the major shift in the economic makeup that has led to Appalachian poverty and in turn, shaped the culture and values of the region. In addition, due to geographic isolation, …

Sex-Biased Immunological Processes Drive Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Kelly Z. Young, Peter Dimitrion, Li Zhou, Indra Adrianto, Qing-Sheng Mi
Dermatology Articles
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can manifest with abscesses, sinus tracts, and scarring in the intertriginous areas of the body. HS is characterized by immune dysregulation, featuring elevated levels of myeloid cells, T helper (Th) cells, and pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly those involved in Th1- and Th17-mediated immunity. In most epidemiological studies, HS shows a strong female sex bias, with reported female-to-male ratios estimated at roughly 3:1, suggesting that sex-related factors contribute to HS pathophysiology. In this article, we review the role of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to immunological differences between the sexes and …
Biodiversity In Eastern Kentucky: Effects Of Habitat Change, Surface Top Mining, And Current Reclamation Practices, Sydney Pardieu
Biodiversity In Eastern Kentucky: Effects Of Habitat Change, Surface Top Mining, And Current Reclamation Practices, Sydney Pardieu
Undergraduate Theses
Biodiversity is a key component in maintaining the valuable ecosystem services that are vital to the way humans interact with and rely on the environment. The Appalachian Region in Eastern North America is one of the most biodiverse temperate broadleaf forests in the world and is home to hundreds of endangered or endemic species. Despite the high biodiversity, the region is also heavily mined, particularly by mountain top removal, causing habitat change and pollution. Current reclamation practices for mined lands are lacking in effective reclamation criterion, and state statutes provide little or no attention to the preservation of biodiversity. Therefore, …

Up to 70 million people around the world suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Current treatment options have varied efficacy and can cause unwanted side effects. New approaches are needed to treat this condition. Sialic acid modifications on chondrocyte receptors have been associated with arthritic inflammation and joint destruction. The transmembrane mucin receptor protein podoplanin (PDPN) has been identified as a functionally relevant receptor that presents extracellular sialic acid motifs. PDPN signaling promotes inflammation and invasion associated with arthritis and, therefore, has emerged as a target that can be used to inhibit arthritic inflammation. Maackia amurensis seed lectin (MASL) can target PDPN …

Research Personnel Exposure To Carbon Dioxide During Euthanasia Procedures, Devon Nealer, Felicia Reibstein, Jennifer Bendorf, Emily Lafferty, Stephanie Ramborger, Taylor Swift, Jacqueline O'Malley, Thomas Boyle
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a commonly used euthanasia agent in animal facilities. This procedure is carried out by replacing oxygen with carbon dioxide in animal cages, thus providing a quick and painless method of euthanasia. Unfortunately, there has been limited research on the potential effects of human exposure to CO2 during euthanasia procedures.
Following a previous carbon dioxide exposure study in the vivarium at Rowan SOM in 2016, the CO2 cylinders and euthanasia chambers have been relocated to room 153 Science Center and the vivarium has adopted a localized exhaust that helps remove the contaminant at the source.

Orthologs Of The C. Elegans Heterochronic Genes Have Divergent Functions In C. Briggsae, Maria Ivanova, Eric G. Moss
Orthologs Of The C. Elegans Heterochronic Genes Have Divergent Functions In C. Briggsae, Maria Ivanova, Eric G. Moss
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The heterochronic genes of C. elegans comprise the best-studied pathway controlling the timing of tissue and organ formation in an animal. To begin to understand the evolution of this pathway, the significance of each factor, and the relationships among the components, we characterized 11 C. briggsae orthologs of C. elegans heterochronic genes. Using CRISPR/Cas9, we made a variety of alleles and found that several mutant phenotypes differ in significant ways from those of C. elegans. Although most orthologs displayed defects in developmental timing, those phenotypes could differ in which stages they controlled, the penetrance and expressivity of the phenotypes, or …
How Does Social Media Consumption Relate To A College Student's Mental Health And Body Image, Madyson Lira
How Does Social Media Consumption Relate To A College Student's Mental Health And Body Image, Madyson Lira
Undergraduate Theses
Mental Health and Body Image issues have become an epidemic, especially among teenagers and young adults. Obsession with social media is also growing among younger audiences. With the increase of users using social media, research has shown that there is a growth in body image issues which has been directly influenced by social media. Despite the research already performed, there hasn’t been a lot of traction surrounding this topic. College students are thrown into constant exposure to the ‘ideal’ college life through social media sharing apps. Between classes, extracurriculars, and meetings, college students are on their phones a lot. Most …
A Constant Presence Of Absence: The Construction Of (In)Visibility And Immigrant Deaths In The Borderlands, Haley Planicka
A Constant Presence Of Absence: The Construction Of (In)Visibility And Immigrant Deaths In The Borderlands, Haley Planicka
Undergraduate Theses
The same nation that champions itself as a cultural “melting pot” is the very same that allows thousands of migrant bodies to rot in the heat of the United States-Mexico borderlands. It is through the sociopolitical debasement of immigrants to “bare life bodies” that thousands are made invisible and erased through their deaths, with little recognition or accountability taken on behalf of government institutions. Hiding behind the conveniently harsh desert terrain to mask any sense of culpability, the United States government exercises a sort of invisible hand over immigrant lives that is reinforced through harmful policy, Border Patrol’s “bare life” …

Is There A Role For Plant-Based “Meat” In Cardiovascular Disease Prevention?, Aziza Jadallah, Usmaan Al-Shehab, Adam Friedman
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Diet is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends following a whole-food, minimally processed diet emphasizing fruit and vegetables to reduce cardiovascular mortality. Recently, processed plant-based meat substitutes, such as Beyond Meat® and Impossible™ foods have become easily accessible to consumers and are advertised as a healthful addition to a plant-based diet. However, these products are highly processed and contain high amounts of saturated fat and sodium. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of processed plant-based meat diets on adverse cardiovascular events compared to animal-based meat diets and minimally processed healthful …
The Role Of Food Accessibility In Weight Loss In A Rat Model Of Parkinson’S Disease, Anjali Kikkisetti, Nicole Charles, Francois Gould
The Role Of Food Accessibility In Weight Loss In A Rat Model Of Parkinson’S Disease, Anjali Kikkisetti, Nicole Charles, Francois Gould
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a variety of motor and non-motor symptoms. The goal of this project was to understand whether the weight loss seen with Parkinson’s disease was due to the lack of being able to access the food because of the food placement or because of inability to chew the food due to degeneration of muscles required for chewing food. Both treatment groups, Adjusted Diet and Unadjusted Diet, lost weight after injections started, whereas control weights were stable throughout the experiment. There is no statistically significant difference in weight loss between adjusted and unadjusted …

Vape-pens or electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are handheld battery powered devices that use a vape-liquid to produce a vapor that is inhaled by the user. The active ingredients in commercial vape-liquids are commonly nicotine, tetrahydrocannabinol or cannabidiol. A consequence of the rise in e-cigarette usage was the 2019 emergence of a vaping-induced respiratory disease denoted ‘e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury’ (EVALI). One of the suspected causes of EVALI is Vitamin E Acetate (VEA), which was found to be a diluent in certain illicit tetrahydrocannabinol vape-pens, whereas nicotine is commonly diluted in equal parts propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin (PG:VG). The …

Pathophysiology, Presentation, And Management Of Interstitial Cystitis In The Acute Setting, David Koziel
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Interstitial cystitis (IC) also known as bladder pain syndrome (BPS) and more infrequently by other monikers represents a debilitating disease with a poorly understood pathophysiology. According to the Centers for Disease Control the incidence of IC ranges from 1 to 5.1 cases per 100,000 individuals. While a relatively rare condition, it is common enough that the provider in the acute setting recognizes the pathophysiology and is familiar with the management of this condition. It is a disease that is more prevalent in women, however men can also be affected. Due to the significant overlap with more common conditions, it is …

“Take The Motherless Children Off The Street”: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome And The Criminal Justice System, Michael L. Perlin, Heather Ellis Cucolo
University of Miami Law Review
Remarkably, there has been minimal academic legal literature about the interplay between fetal alcohol syndrome dis- order (“FASD”) and critical aspects of many criminal trials, including issues related to the role of experts, quality of counsel, competency to stand trial, the insanity defense, and sentencing and the death penalty. In this Article, the co-authors will first define fetal alcohol syndrome and explain its significance to the criminal justice system. We will then look at the specific role of experts in cases involving defendants with FASD and consider adequacy of counsel. Next, we will discuss the impact of FASD on the …
Cosmetic Crisis: The Obsolete Regulatory Framework Of The Ever-Evolving Cosmetic Industry, Isabelle M. Carbajales
Cosmetic Crisis: The Obsolete Regulatory Framework Of The Ever-Evolving Cosmetic Industry, Isabelle M. Carbajales
University of Miami Law Review
Cosmetics only first became regulated after a series of tragic events where users were seriously harmed from the use of cosmetic products. These tragic events prompted legislators to enact the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act of 1938. Before then, law makers feared that regulating the cosmetic industry would lower the tone of legislation because they considered the cosmetic industry to be inconsequential. At present, the regulatory system in place to protect vulnerable cosmetic consumers is nearly identical to when it was enacted over eighty-six years ago—even though the cosmetic market looks nothing like it did back then. The consumer base …
Incarnate Spirits: The Embodied Roots Of Worship, Henry O. Widdicombe
Incarnate Spirits: The Embodied Roots Of Worship, Henry O. Widdicombe
Obsculta
Spirituality is “how the Spirit of Jesus enables Christians to grow into fullness with God in this life and in particular historical circumstances.” The role of the community is definitive in shaping the spirituality of an individual and the interior dynamism of spirit is contextualized by incarnate experience. This piece employs the thought of Bernard Lonergan, SJ bolstered with the work of two Lonergan scholars, Ian Bell and Timothy Brunk, on the notion of a “worshipful” pattern of experience.
An Incremental Based Approach For 3d Multi-Angle Point Cloud Stitching Using Icp And Knn, Pankti K. Patel
An Incremental Based Approach For 3d Multi-Angle Point Cloud Stitching Using Icp And Knn, Pankti K. Patel
Theses and Dissertations
The basic principle of stitching is joining or merging any two materials or objects. 3D point cloud stitching is basically stitching two 3D point cloud together. 3D point cloud stitching is an emerging topic and there are multiple ways to achieve it. There are various methods for stitching which all have changes throughout the time. The existing methods do have shortcomings and have ignored the multiangle stitching of a same model or an object. This shortfall leads to many deficiencies in the ability of a stitching algorithm to maintain accuracy over the period. In this work I have introduced a …
Detinue And Replevin: Arresting Children To Enforce Private Parenting Orders In New Zealand Family Court, Carrie Leonetti
Detinue And Replevin: Arresting Children To Enforce Private Parenting Orders In New Zealand Family Court, Carrie Leonetti
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This Article argues that the seizures of children authorized by the New Zealand Care of Children Act to enforce private custody orders are unlawful and unjustifiable arrests. These seizures lack in either the substantive limitations of necessity or the procedural protections that should attach to such an intrusive and violent restriction on children’s liberty. It argues that their issuance violates children’s rights under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 and international human rights law. It canvasses the history of these arrest provisions and argues that they function as a mechanism for detinue and replevin of children, harkening back …
What The United States Could Learn From Norway: Training Police Officers To Be Social Workers, Not Warriors, Liana Brown
What The United States Could Learn From Norway: Training Police Officers To Be Social Workers, Not Warriors, Liana Brown
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This note compares the training of police officers and its consequential effects in the United States versus that of Norway. In the United States, the lack of national training standards, in conjunction with an emphasis on technical skills and weaponry, has further perpetuated the “Warrior mindset.” The “Warrior mindset” reflects the rhetoric that officers are akin to combatants in a war, in which they have a duty to safeguard the rest of civilization against criminals that can strike at any moment. Contrastingly, the training programs for police officers in Norway include a consolidated and robust three-year education program that emphasizes …
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’S The Marriage Of Figaro, Camille Lerner
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’S The Marriage Of Figaro, Camille Lerner
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
The Marriage of Figaro is generally considered to the world’s most popular operas, selling out across the world. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the school of music decided to tackle the monstrous task of putting on this production, and by collaborating with the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, brought in a design team that could meet the expectations, requirements, and demands of this monumental production. By working closely with collaborators, the university was able to, rather smoothly, create a moving performance that will be remembered by many.
