Embodied Fatness In Boys: A Critical Phenomenological Study, Sean Leadem
Embodied Fatness In Boys: A Critical Phenomenological Study, Sean Leadem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation was an exploratory study of experiences of fatness in boyhood using a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative method. The author conducted in-depth, open-ended interviews with participants who identify as men and for whom fatness or related body-difference was an issue in childhood or adolescence to gather data on the meanings of fatness for boys and the men they become. Data analysis was organized around the existential dimensions of embodiment, temporality, and relationality. Themes emerging from this analysis included a) the discovery of fatness as ambiguous meanings mediated by others, b) fatness as a problem in a horizon that does not …

This thesis includes research images, hand-drawn renderings, previsualization, light plots, lighting paperwork, and production photos of the final product.
Prophylactic Tranexamic Acid Administration To Prevent Postpartum Hemorrhage After Cesarean Delivery In Patients At High Risk Of Severe Postpartum Bleeding, Alexandra White, Stephanie Lafikes
Prophylactic Tranexamic Acid Administration To Prevent Postpartum Hemorrhage After Cesarean Delivery In Patients At High Risk Of Severe Postpartum Bleeding, Alexandra White, Stephanie Lafikes
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Cases of PPH are increasing in the United States, and despite current treatment recommendations, mortality remains high. This project included a review of the research on the use of prophylactic tranexamic acid (TXA) administration to prevent or reduce blood loss after cesarean delivery. Statistics regarding the impact of PPH and the pharmacology of TXA were reviewed in detail. Evidence shows that TXA is safe for parturients and nursing infants. Further evidence shows prophylactic TXA administration is associated with a modest reduction in blood loss, the need for blood transfusion, …
Management Of Ineffective Epidural For Cesarean Section, Miriam Ndenecho
Management Of Ineffective Epidural For Cesarean Section, Miriam Ndenecho
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
In the United States, epidural anesthesia is used for approximately 29-44% of cesarean sections (Carvalho, 2012). A failed or inadequate labor epidural is challenging to manage, especially when a cesarean section is imminent. A failed labor epidural is defined as insufficient pain relief within 45 min after placement, accidental dural puncture, re-siting or abandoning the procedure, and patient dissatisfaction at follow-up (Ismail et al., 2021). This project examined established best practices for managing a parturient with an ineffective labor epidural that requires a cesarean section. The literature review provided zero practice guidelines for the management of failed epidural for cesarean …

Art As Experienced By A Female Combat Veteran Using The El Duende Process Painting., Bonita Owen
Art Therapy Counseling Final Research Projects
This single-participant phenomenological case study seeks to determine how a female combat veteran experiences art therapy. The case study participant is a female veteran who served in Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. While painting on a single canvas, the participant followed Miller’s El Duende process painting procedure (2012) and kept a written and pictorial journal of the experience. The research involved five sessions during which the participant annotated her thoughts and feelings on the experiential expressions chart for each session. These charts were analyzed to identify the mechanism of change in art therapy for the participant. The participant’s journals indicated …

Second Annual University of Arkansas Teaching and Learning Symposium: Sharing Teaching Ideas
In the preeminent work on grit, Duckworth et al. (2007) first defined grit as “perseverance and passion for long term-goals.” Evidence is overwhelming that grit is a predictor of success in various arenas of life, often when no other valid predictors can be identified. Grit was the only statistically significant predictor of both academic and clinical success in an Australian study of over 2000 university students (Terry & Peck, 2020). Both job satisfaction and performance are improved with increased grit (Cho & Kim, 2022). Clear evidence that a …

Uprooting The Mosalaki: Changing Institutions And Livelihood Impacts At Kelimutu National Park, Karno Batiran, Micah R. Fisher, Bart Verheijen, Nurhady Sirimorok, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide
Forest and Society
Studies on interactions between national parks and Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia have gained much attention in recent years, which mainly examine eviction, boundary disputes, and remediation. This research focuses on changing institutions since the establishment of Kelimutu National Park, foregrounding socio-cultural and livelihood impacts over time. This study involves in-depth interviews, FGDs, and observations from April to May 2019 and revisiting in November 2021. Findings highlight changing traditional institutions (Mosalaki) uprooted by the formal National Park governing authority. Such transitions also shift governing authority over natural resources access and control in ways that negatively affect the livelihoods of …
Species Differences In Platelet Protease-Activated Receptors, Stephanie A Renna, Steven E. Mckenzie, James V. Michael
Species Differences In Platelet Protease-Activated Receptors, Stephanie A Renna, Steven E. Mckenzie, James V. Michael
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
Protease-activated receptors (PARs) are a class of integral membrane proteins that are cleaved by a variety of proteases, most notably thrombin, to reveal a tethered ligand and promote activation. PARs are critical mediators of platelet function in hemostasis and thrombosis, and therefore are attractive targets for anti-platelet therapies. Animal models studying platelet PAR physiology have relied heavily on genetically modified mouse strains, which have provided ample insight but have some inherent limitations. The current review aims to summarize the notable PAR expression and functional differences between the mouse and human, in addition to highlighting some recently developed tools to further …

Dolphin Behavioral Responses To Uncrewed Aerial Systems As A Function Of Exposure, Height, And Type, Savannah Damiano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) are becoming a standard tool in the study of cetaceans, however, a comparative assessment of animal responses to UAS has not been established to gauge the most effective systems for cetacean study. We utilized Dolphin Quest Bermuda’s eleven bottlenose dolphins as subjects for such an investigation taking place over five weeks in 2022 and five weeks in 2023. The dolphins were evaluated for investigative behavioral responses to six off-the-shelf UAS types and a custom fixed wing system. Each UAS was flown in decreasing height vertically above the main dolphin lagoon to evaluate dolphin behavioral responses in …

An Analysis Of Sediment Collected By Pogonomyrmex Salinus From The Jurassic Sundance Formation, Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, Josephine H. Laprad
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Pogonomyrmex salinus is a species of harvester ant found in the Bighorn Basin area of Wyoming. Harvester ants are aptly named as they “harvest” seeds for food, but this harvesting behavior is also seen in their collection of sediment particles to build their mounds. For decades, paleontologists have looked to harvester ants for microfossils because the small size of the fossils makes them difficult for human eyes to find. But there are unresolved questions about the data that can be gleaned from the fossils collected by the ants. The mounds collected for this study include material from the Stockade Beaver …

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Globally, 28% of the reptiles are fossorial. Fossorial reptiles, which perform important ecological functions, such as being ecosystem engineers, top predators and bioindicators, are indispensable members of the soil ecosystem. However, the ecology of fossorial reptiles is relatively little known because of their cryptic behavior and rarity. In Hong Kong, there are four species of fossorial reptile, three of which are rare and of potential conservation concern. Among the four fossorial reptile species that occur in Hong Kong, Indotyphlops lazelli and Dibamus bogadeki, are endemic to Hong Kong and are globally threatened species. On the other hand, the distribution …

Achieving safely managed sanitation and resource recovery in areas that are rural, geographically challenged, or experiencing rapidly increasing population density may not be feasible with centralized facilities due to space requirements, site-specific concerns, and high costs of sewer installation. Nonsewered sanitation (NSS) systems have the potential to provide safely managed sanitation and achieve strict wastewater treatment standards. One such NSS treatment technology is the NEWgenerator, which includes an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), nutrient recovery via ion exchange, and electrochlorination. The system has been shown to achieve robust treatment of real waste for over 100 users, but the technology’s relative life …

Chytridiomycosis is affecting hundreds of amphibian species worldwide, but while in tropical areas, adult individuals have been the focus of most investigations, the exact role played by infection intensity of breeding adults is not well understood in temperate areas. We conducted mark–recapture–capture surveys during spiny common toad breeding seasons from 2006 to 2018 at the site of the first recorded outbreak of chytridiomycosis in Europe, the Peñalara Massif (Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, central Spain), and collected infection samples and several variables related to the reproductive effort of male individuals. We used general linear mixed models to evaluate the contribution …

Sales of deer licenses, one of the most important revenue sources for wildlife management at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), have been declining for a decade. To increase its revenue, the IDNR is considering introducing a new lifetime deer license for sale. This license would allow hunters to harvest deer (and possibly other species) each year for the rest of their lives in exchange for a relatively large up-front fee. The forward-looking nature of the decision to buy a lifetime license means hunters' choice behavior is necessarily dynamic. Prior work estimates preferences for long-lived, durable goods using standard …

TMEM106B, a lysosomal transmembrane protein, has been closely associated with brain health. Recently, an intriguing link between TMEM106B and brain inflammation has been discovered, but how TMEM106B regulates inflammation is unknown. Here, we report that TMEM106B deficiency in mice leads to reduced microglia proliferation and activation and increased microglial apoptosis in response to demyelination. We also found an increase in lysosomal pH and a decrease in lysosomal enzyme activities in TMEM106B-deficient microglia. Furthermore, TMEM106B loss results in a significant decrease in the protein levels of TREM2, an innate immune receptor essential for microglia survival and activation. Specific ablation of TMEM106B …

Limits On Biomedical Research: Whether, Why, And How, Christine Grady
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
This article examines the limitations of laws and regulations in regulating biomedical research. While laws and regulations can serve as guardrails to limit certain research studies, they are often blunt instruments that struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of scientific progress. Moreover, laws in one jurisdiction may not be binding on others, making it difficult to regulate the global scientific community. The article argues that regulatory parsimony should be exercised, imposing regulations only where they work and not where they are unhelpful. The article also explores the ethical considerations surrounding biomedical research and its impact on society, including …

From Roe V. Wade To Dobbs V. Jackson – Between Women’S Rights Discourse And Obligations Discourse, Pnina Lifshitz-Aviram, Yehezkel Margalit
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court published its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning the landmark abortion case, Roe v. Wade. In 1973, two groundbreaking abortion decisions were handed down by the same Court – Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton – recognizing a woman’s fundamental constitutional right to obtain an abortion until fetal viability. The ensuring nationwide judiciary recognition of women’s basic rights was abruptly shaken by the Dobbs v. Jackson’s ruling that “the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.” Dobbs’ reversal of these prior cases has created a legal, political, and public upheaval. …

Evidence For Community Face Masking To Limit The Spread Of Sars-Cov-2: A Critical Review, Ian T. Liu, Vinay Prasad, Jonathan D. Darrow
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
The use of facemasks in community settings has become an accepted public policy response to decrease disease transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet evidence of facemask efficacy is based primarily on observational studies that are subject to confounding and on mechanistic studies that rely on surrogate endpoints (such as droplet dispersion) as proxies for disease transmission. The available clinical evidence of facemask efficacy is of low quality and the best available clinical evidence has mostly failed to show efficacy, with fourteen of sixteen identified randomized controlled trials comparing face masks to no mask controls failing to find statistically significant benefit …

The Threat Of Hospital Wastewater: An Evidence-Based Call To Action, Ann P. Nguyen
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Introduction: Hospital wastewater carries a unique composition of pollutants, a burden that includes high chemical and biological residuals. These pollutants are discharged into sewage treatment plants and natural environments where they contaminate human water sources and larger ecosystems. Water treatment plants are not designed to treat the high loads of biomedical waste and persistent organic compounds found in hospital wastewater and therefore pollutants survive in conventionally treated water. Evidence of contaminated soil, municipal wastewater, surface water, ground water, and even drinking water have been demonstrated in studies conducted around the world highlighting the ubiquity of the problem. Hospital effluent as …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
New hydrochemical measurements from the Syr Darya provide insights into factors affecting the composition and quality of a major freshwater source replenishing the Aral Sea. This river is heavily used for power and irrigation and crosses territories of four Central Asia republics. It is intensely managed, draining several major tributaries, many reservoirs, and numerous irrigation distribution systems and canals. Analysis of seasonal changes in dissolved ion concentrations using geochemical diagrams, elemental ratios, statistical correlation, and equilibrium modeling allowed the characterization of mineral formation processes that control the dissolved chemical composition. Measured water hydrochemistry and composition type differs substantially from previous …

The Trouble With Triples: Examining The Impact Of Measurement Error In Mediation Analysis., Madeleine S Gastonguay, Gregory R Keele, Gary Churchill
Faculty Research 2023
Mediation analysis is used in genetic mapping studies to identify candidate gene mediators of quantitative trait loci (QTL). We consider genetic mediation analysis of triplets-sets of three variables consisting of a target trait, the genotype at a QTL for the target trait, and a candidate mediator that is the abundance of a transcript or protein whose coding gene co-locates with the QTL. We show that, in the presence of measurement error, mediation analysis can infer partial mediation even in the absence of a causal relationship between the candidate mediator and the target. We describe a measurement error model and a …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
ABSTRACT
There is growing evidence that healthcare workers do not provide equivalent levels of care to patients of different social groups. This group includes the population of people experiencing homelessness and the number continues to grow simultaneously across U.S. Studies have also shown that the poor and the marginalized experiences disappointment in the healthcare industry due to negative attitudes such as stereotyping, bias, and prejudice from healthcare providers limiting them from accessing care when necessary. With growing research on the influence of the experience of trauma among people experiencing homelessness, there is a lack of trauma-informed services as it relates …

The True "New Eve": Ben Wildflower's Magnificat And The Second Creation Story, Mary L. Parks
The True "New Eve": Ben Wildflower's Magnificat And The Second Creation Story, Mary L. Parks
Obsculta
Images of the Virgin Mary have provided comfort to Christians for almost two thousand years. Many of these images have depicted the Mother of God as gentle, demure, pure, and obedient. Ben Wildflower’s woodcut, Magnificat, imagines another side of Mary’s story. This paper considers the second creation story, “New Eve” typology, and church teaching about current social and environmental issues to demonstrate why Magnificat is an ideal portrait for the true “New Eve”.
