Is Precrastination Related To Updating And Inhibition Aspects Of Executive Function?, Sanaii N. Masih, Ryan Jun Seong Liew, Dawn Mcbride
Faculty Publications – Psychology
Precrastination is the act of completing a task as soon as possible even at the expense of extra effort. Past research has suggested that individuals precrastinate due to a desire to reduce their cognitive load, also known as the cognitive load-reduction (CLEAR) hypothesis [VonderHaar, R. L., McBride, D. M., & Rosenbaum, D. A. (2019). Task order choices in cognitive and perceptual-motor tasks: The cognitive-load-reduction (CLEAR) hypothesis. Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 81(7), 2517–2525. https://doi.org/10.3758/s13414-019-01754-z]. This idea stems from the notion that it is taxing to hold intentions in working memory and completing a task as soon as possible releases …
The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey
The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey
St. Thomas Law Review
For several years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have carried tension over which agency should regulate genetically modified livestock. Recently, this tension has boiled over with the release of many articles and statements from each organization as they battle over regulatory authority, most notably the USDA's claim that they are ready to take the bull by the horns and control the regulation of genetically engineered livestock. This note examines history and present-day practices to predict which agency will succeed in this battle of regulations, the USDA or the FDA.
Lessons From Rwanda: Why The U.K. Should Promote Reconciliation Through Localized Strategies In Place Of Prosecutorial Amnesty, Jeremy J. Perillo
Lessons From Rwanda: Why The U.K. Should Promote Reconciliation Through Localized Strategies In Place Of Prosecutorial Amnesty, Jeremy J. Perillo
St. Thomas Law Review
The United Kingdom ("U.K.") has a long, rich, and complicated history, but is likely better known contemporarily through its icons, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Big Ben, for example. Beyond that surface, formulated through its time as an expansive empire, is the complexity and controversy that comes with being the U.K., a prominent global hegemonic power throughout generations. One such complexity that has spanned centuries is the demarcation between Northern Ireland ("N.I.") and the Republic of Ireland. In early September 2023, the U.K.'s House of Commons ("Parliament") passed the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act ("the Act"), intending …

Banned Books & Banned Identities: Maintaining Secularism And The Ability To Read In Public Education For The Well-Being Of America's Youth, Megan M. Tylenda
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
Books containing LGBTQ+ themes and characters are being removed from public school libraries at a rapid rate across the United States. While a book challenge has made it to the Supreme Court once before, the resulting singular plurality opinion left courts without a clear test to apply, ultimately leaving students’ First Amendment rights in the air. Additionally, the increasingly relaxed view of courts towards religious influence in public schools indicates that if a modern case were to reach the Supreme Court, religious challenges may be accepted, which would leave LGBTQ+ students who seek to see themselves represented in literature without …

Digital Art In A High School Art Classroom: Entanglements And Becomings, Nicholas Garrison Leonard
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate how Karen Barad’s theory of agential realism can expand understandings of cognition and creativity in the digital art high school classroom. Increasing advancements in digital technologies are presenting ontological and epistemological questions regarding the nature of cognition and creativity which current dominant approaches to art education are ill-equipped to address. Furthermore, over the past decade, the field of art education has called for an increased need in research addressing digital artmaking technologies. Since art education pedagogy in the United States has an established history of being inflected by popular theories of the …

Don't Mess With Texans' Rights: Protecting Transgender Youth From The Paternalistic Policies Of State Executives, Mary Franklin
Don't Mess With Texans' Rights: Protecting Transgender Youth From The Paternalistic Policies Of State Executives, Mary Franklin
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued an opinion in 2022 detailing how gender-affirming care for transgender minors constituted child abuse under the Texas Family Code. As a result of this opinion, multiple families of trans teens engaging in various forms of gender-affirming care were investigated by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. This Article applies the constitutional standards imposed by the equal protection clause, substantive due process, and parental authority to Paxton’s recommendation, using both the U.S. and Texas Constitutions. Ultimately, this Article concludes that Paxton’s opinion fails to meet these constitutional standards and recommends action from the …
A Technique For Visualization Of Multivariate Categorical Data, Janice James
A Technique For Visualization Of Multivariate Categorical Data, Janice James
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Multivariate Categorical Data (MCD) plays a significant role in many industries, and the ability to understand the data is critical for insight and decision making. Visualization is a key tool for understanding the data. This dissertation designed and implemented a novel technique for visualizing MCD called Pivoting Parallel Charts (PPC). The design of PPC was informed by studying several existing MCD visualization techniques.
PPC visualizes MCD as a sequence of parallel axes with affixed bar charts. A user-specified axis, called the pivot, acts as the crucial point of consideration for all data relationships. The bar charts are color-coded by the …

Interdisciplinary Unit Planning For The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Ibdp) To Support Multilingual Language Learners, Jessica R. Dubie
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The research conducted in this thesis intends to consider the possibilities within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) to establish similar levels of interdisciplinarity as the rest of the IB continuum, specifically in the support of multilingual language learners (MLL), given the high numbers of students completing the coursework in their second or third language around the world. In considering various IB publications and the research conducted by Ecctis (2021), the basic framework for how to define interdisciplinarity in the Diploma Programme would be established, but the methodology and support for MLL students in this academic level would come from …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how Skanderbeg utilized transformational leadership principles. To identify Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg’s leadership characteristics, the researcher used a qualitative interpretive biography, a subcategory of narrative inquiry. Skanderbeg inspired his followers through his vision, charisma, and steadfast commitment to the cause of Albanian independence from Ottoman domination. He had a special ability to unify feudal lords, foster a strong sense of common identity, and awaken a deep level of loyalty among his troops. Skanderbeg’s transformational leadership left a deep-seated imprint on Albanian history, exemplifying how visionary leadership can inspire a nation to rise against adversity and strive for a …

Here Come The Test Results: An Analysis Of Games In Experimental Design For Neuroscience Research, Madison Mcdougall
Here Come The Test Results: An Analysis Of Games In Experimental Design For Neuroscience Research, Madison Mcdougall
Scripps Senior Theses
A large part of experimental design in neuroscience revolves around the tasks that are designed for participants to complete to understand the complex system that is the brain. However, as Alan Newell pointed out in his 1973 paper, “You can’t play 20 questions with nature and win,” as designed tasks often answer a binary question that limits their contribution to understanding the brain as a system or a “genuine slab of human behavior.” Games provide an apt solution to this problem, as their complexity embodies a naturalistic task while their well-defined rules create a robust experimental system. Video games specifically …

Assessing Lipid Composition Of Cell Membrane In Escherichia Coli Under Aerobic And Anaerobic Conditions, Isabelle Johnson
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Escherichia coli is a highly studied model organism that is tightly tied to the mammalian gastrointestinal system. This microorganism has the capability to be a beneficial gut microbe or a life-threatening pathogen. In this study, the lipid membrane of Escherichia coli was investigated using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to observe the change in its composition in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Evidence of desaturation was discovered in the spectra, though more investigation is needed to understand the metabolic processes and drives that result in this change. Elucidation of these pathways in the future could result in …

Foreign Language Instruction: Commonalities From Kindergarten To College, Bethany A. Tafoya
Foreign Language Instruction: Commonalities From Kindergarten To College, Bethany A. Tafoya
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Kindergartners learn much differently than high schoolers or college students. Yet, when it comes to foreign language (FL) instruction, adult learners are often back at square one, like kindergarteners. Though learning capacity and maturity differ greatly between kindergarten and college, are there any common threads in the method of instruction across all these levels? This project was carried out by observing foreign language classrooms from kindergarten to college, identifying the main means of instruction in each class, and analyzing whether any commonalities exist between all the levels. Language is universal, and in an increasingly global world, contact with other languages …
Examining The Relation Between Anthropomorphism And Theory Of Mind, Noah Paulson
Examining The Relation Between Anthropomorphism And Theory Of Mind, Noah Paulson
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Two ways people think about the mental state of others is through anthropomorphism and theory of mind. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human-like capacities to non-human entities, such as ascribing mental and internal states (Waytz et al., 2013). Theory of mind is the ability to infer and understand other people’s mental states, such as beliefs, desires, intentions, and knowledge (Doherty, 2011). We predicted these two concepts are associated, and this prediction was assessed through the research outlined here. The current study examined potential associations between children’s (N=82; 5-8 years old) anthropomorphism, parent-reported theory of mind, and parent-reported social …
Give Them Bread, Mara E. Kneafsey
Give Them Bread, Mara E. Kneafsey
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The title, Give Them Bread, is based off a quote by Roman poet, Juvenal: “Give them bread and circuses and they will never revolt.” The story contains elements of horror, dream-like imagery, and surrealism—a mode of art that, topically, emerged in the early 20th century. It contains accounts of Italian history, references to commedia dell’arte, and inspired by Italian literary works such as Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and Curzio Malaparte’s macabre novels, Kaputt and La Pelle. The grander purpose of Give Them Bread is to examine the meaning of truth in a political, moral, philosophical, spiritual, and …

In The Wind's Twelve Quarters, Ursula K. Le Guin writes, “We're each of us alone, to be sure. What can you do but hold your hand out in the dark?” In my collection of short stories, Too Old for Monsters, I hold out my hands to every reader—the lonely and suffering person, the uncertain and wavering, the joyous and the brave, the growing and the stalling, and the myriad in-betweens. Writing explores the human experience, but this collection also explores the tangled mess of life beyond the merely human. These stories address the bone-saw sharp ache of loss and …

Autism Clinicians' Bias In Detecting Female-Typical Rrbi In Young Children, Megan Young
Autism Clinicians' Bias In Detecting Female-Typical Rrbi In Young Children, Megan Young
Scripps Senior Theses
With four times as many boys than girls diagnosed with autism, psychologists must investigate whether this is due to an intrinsic difference or gender bias. This proposed study aims to evaluate autism clinicians’ bias in detecting restrictive and repetitive behaviors and interests (RRBI) in young children by presenting autism specialists with a vignette depicting one of four children, depicting either the male or female autism phenotype, and a masculine or feminine name. Gender of child and phenotypic presentation is expected to have a significant effect on detection and identification such that feminine names presenting with the Female Autism Phenotype (FAP) …

Improving Accessibility And Understanding: Studying The Impact Of Human Activities And Dam Removals On Anadromous Fish Species In The Pacific Northwest, Adia F. Bennett
Scripps Senior Theses
Human activities in North American watersheds have significantly impacted anadromous fish, causing some species of salmon and steelhead to become threatened and endangered. These fish hold ecological, cultural, and economic importance, yet factors such as habitat destruction, overfishing, pollution, climate change, and hydroelectric dams continue to degrade populations. Dams are particularly harmful to anadromous fish, sparking a recent movement advocating for dam removals. This study uses NOAA’s 2022 Biological Viability Assessment to examine the response of anadromous fish to recent dam removals in the Pacific Northwest. Four populations were selected to analyze due to their interaction with sites that had …

Good Enough To Eat: How College Students Are (Re)Forming Their Relationships To Food, Sophia Lewis
Good Enough To Eat: How College Students Are (Re)Forming Their Relationships To Food, Sophia Lewis
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis, I seek to critically examine how college students at American liberal arts institutions relate to food in their everyday lives and how those relationships to food are formed in a cultural landscape where what and how one eats can carry significant moral implications. Through a series of ethnographic interviews, I found that college students are negotiating a variety of interconnected social influences that have shaped their relationships to food, the most prominent being the ways that their parents taught them to relate to food in childhood and adolescence, cultural conceptions of health, and their own embodied reactions …
