Industrial Hemp Production And Potential Risks In Kentucky, Hoyeon Jeong Jan 2024

Industrial Hemp Production And Potential Risks In Kentucky, Hoyeon Jeong

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Since the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2014 and 2018 legalized Industrial Hemp (Cannabis Sativa. L), interest in grain, fiber, and floral hemp production has seen growing pains. As an emerging crop, there is a research gap in the impact of weather and agronomic conditions on hemp production including THC (Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol) and pollen drift as risks in hemp cultivation. The first essay aims to measure the impact of weather and agronomic factors on hemp grain, fiber, and floral yields in Kentucky using a yield-weather model with information on field locations. The results show that heat conditions during the growing …

Trademarks On The Blockchain: Nft Domains And Collisions, Jelena Laketić

Michigan Technology Law Review

Blockchain technology supporting cryptocurrency transactions is one of the most critical innovations of this decade. Establishing a legal identity on blockchain, however, is fraught with uncertainty. In the 1990s, the internet faced a similar set of issues, which were resolved through the ICANN dispute resolution system. This Article asserts that blockchain technology urgently needs a similar cohesive approach to NFT domains.

This Article will explore trademark issues with non-fungible tokens (NFTs), specifically NFT domains. It begins by exploring the fundamental structure of NFTs by demystifying the technology and showing how NFTs contrast with other currency regimes. Increased usage of NFTs …

Innovation Originators, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim, Rafeel Wasif

Michigan Technology Law Review

Asian Americans are one of the most striking and undertheorized ethnic groups in the field of innovation. While a prolific ethnic group when it comes to being named as inventors on U.S. patents, very little has been written on this observation, perhaps because of previously limited datasets and unwieldy data analysis on ethnic backgrounds about patenting at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Research on inventor diversity and ethnicity in innovation has begun to explore some ethnic groups, but a more holistic account should focus on one particular overlooked group. Recently, entrepreneurship studies concerning ethnicity have shown that …

Cyanide Toxicity Induced By Apricot Kernel Consumption: A Case Report, Jatin Sadarangani, Vaishnavi Singh, Benjamin K. Kingsly

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Functional foods are food items that should be consumed as part of a regular diet in order to provide advantages beyond what are typically referred to as traditional nutritional benefits. Furthermore, in order to support the better function claim or the decreased illness risk claim, these positive outcomes must be scientifically proven. Foods with particular health benefits have been referred to as "superfoods" more recently. Superfoods are conceptually defined as foods with high biological value because of their high concentration of bioactive components and high concentration of nutrients, as well as their high bioavailability and bioactivity in the body. As …

Angioedema Linked To Combination Pill Trandolapril/Verapamil, Aadil Bhutta, Sana Khan, Monica Dhiman, Udit Bhatt, Akinjide Onifade

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Angioedema is the swelling of deeper layers of skin caused by a build-up fluid, oftentimes due to the culmination of immune system activation against allergens. There are several causes of angioedema, including animal dander, exposure to various foods, insect bites, and medications such as Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). This swelling primarily presents periorbital and periorally, however can also less-commonly affect the airway. Angioedema can be life-threatening if involving the throat and larynx given the potential of respiratory airway compromise. This case presents a patient who had been on an ACE-ARB for almost 2 decades, …

A Roadmap To Nil And Taxation, Doron Narotzki, Yariv Brauner Jan 2024

A Roadmap To Nil And Taxation, Doron Narotzki, Yariv Brauner

UF Law Faculty Publications

The landscape of college sports has dramatically changed in recent years. What was once considered a place for amateur athletes pursuing education now partially mirrors, at least for some student-athletes, the structure and financial dynamics of professional leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB. However, the collegiate sports ecosystem still remains distinct, shaped by unique regulatory frameworks governed by the NCAA. This article reviews and analyses the implications of these changes, and focuses on the tax considerations surrounding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights and how the evolving nature of college sports also presents certain tax implications, some of …

Ethical Oversight And Social Licensing Of Portable Mri Research, Barbara J. Evans Jan 2024

Ethical Oversight And Social Licensing Of Portable Mri Research, Barbara J. Evans

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article explores two questions: (1) whether portable MRI research might escape regulatory oversight altogether under existing U.S. privacy and research ethical frameworks, leaving research participants without adequate protections, and (2) whether existing regulatory frameworks, when they do apply, can guard society’s broader interest in ensuring that portable MRI research pursues socially beneficial, ethically sound aims that minimize the potential for externalities affecting nonparticipating individuals and groups, who might be stigmatized or otherwise harmed even if they decline participation in the research.

Sticky Procedure And Procedural Values In The Federal Appellate Courts, Merritt E. Mcalister Jan 2024

Sticky Procedure And Procedural Values In The Federal Appellate Courts, Merritt E. Mcalister

UF Law Faculty Publications

New federal appeals have fallen by forty percent over the last three decades. And yet the case management procedures—reduced oral argument, unpublished decisions, case-screening, and staff attorneys—adopted to help courts tackle rising caseloads have remained. And these case management adaptations appear as durable as ever. The “stickiness” of these adaptations suggest that efficient resolution of disputes is the sine qua non of modern appellate practice. Equally sticky are some longstanding disparities in the extent to which different federal appellate courts rely on these efficiencies, raising new questions about the extent to which the federal appellate courts share core adjudicatory values.

No-Poach Agreements: An Overview Of Us, Eu, And National Case Law, Donald J. Polden Jan 2024

No-Poach Agreements: An Overview Of Us, Eu, And National Case Law, Donald J. Polden

Faculty Publications

The United States, European Union, and many other international jurisdictions have antitrust and competition laws that seek to prevent anticompetitive conduct concerning labor and employment relationships. However, for many years these prohibitions on restraints of trade in labor markets and employment relationships were not routinely and rigorously enforced by those jurisdictions. The lack of governmental attention to these labor market practices has changed in important ways in recent years. Across many jurisdictions, we are now seeing more intense attention to conduct that suppresses wages of workers and their freedom of job mobility to other comparable positions. From an international perspective, …

Psychology And The Legislative Future Of In Vitro Fertilization, Kerry L. Macintosh

Faculty Publications

In LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine, P.C.,1 three couples that had undergone in vitro fertilization (hereinafter IVF) sued a fertility clinic and hospital after their stored embryos were lost in an accident.2 The plaintiffs included claims under Alabama’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act (hereinafter Act), which imposes liability for a wrongful act, omission, or negligence that causes the death of a “minor child.”3 The trial court dismissed the wrongful death claims, holding that the embryos were not children.4 The Alabama Supreme Court, however, reversed the dismissal, reasoning that the lost embryos qualified as unborn …

Arianism Revised: The Re-Emergence Of An Infamous Heresy, Mia K. Hardy Jan 2024

Arianism Revised: The Re-Emergence Of An Infamous Heresy, Mia K. Hardy

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Arian heresy, a Trinitarian heresy that suggests the members of the Trinity differ in essence, function, and rank, has existed in Christianity for centuries but hasn't often recaptured the mainstream discussion of orthodoxy. That is, until the 1970s. Since then, the available literature surrounding the subjects of complementarianism, eternal subordination, the Holy Trinity, and Arian philosophy has grown, and the overlap between these factors cumulated into what was arguably one of the most divisive theological debates within modern Evangelicalism. What factors contributed to the reemergence of this centuries-long debate in modern times? The overarching goal of this work is to …

Integral Human Development: Hurling Into The Soul, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2024

Integral Human Development: Hurling Into The Soul, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article offers a reflection on the relation between integral human development and integral ecology to create a lens for an incarnational spirituality of the soul. Grounded in and through God’s word and questions “hurling” into the soul, we are invited into the “play” of the Spirit, offering opportunities for memory, grace and hope to resound through the “seasons” of life and death. Through boldness, endurance and devotion to “the gospel of Christ” (1 Cor 9: 12), the hurling depths of the soul arises to witness to “become all things to all people” (1 Cor 9: 22). The article concludes …

Product Elimination Decision And Its Impact On Consumers: The Special Case Of A Local Speedway, Mark Mitchell, Jacob Voegel, Michael Smith Jan 2024

Product Elimination Decision And Its Impact On Consumers: The Special Case Of A Local Speedway, Mark Mitchell, Jacob Voegel, Michael Smith

Atlantic Marketing Journal

After 60+ years of operation, Myrtle Beach Speedway was closed and the property sold. The new owners will redevelop the property for commercial and residential purposes. Businesses routinely eliminate products for a variety of reasons, including under-performance and/or a desire to redeploy those resources elsewhere. What is often overlooked is the impact on consumers. In addition to reducing fan access to racing, a closed race track removes a racing opportunity for aspiring race car drivers and crew members. It can also mean shuttering tracks that once had historical significance. The history of raceway closures in the Myrtle Beach, SC area …

Video Through | Wintersession 2024 Syllabus, Maxime Cavajani, Movement Lab Jan 2024

Video Through | Wintersession 2024 Syllabus, Maxime Cavajani, Movement Lab

Course Materials

This course is entitled video through because it aims to question how video allows us to think through time and through space simultaneously. In this course we will consider video as space, material, and matter. In an approach that prioritizes experimentation in space, we will work in a non-linear fashion: fabricating video in space and fabricating space with video _ a constant back and forth. From those experiments we will learn how to use the properties of video editing, video-making, shooting, projecting/screening as interconnected tools that deny a singular trajectory of making.

The classroom will become a site. We are …

Death Is Disparate, Jesse Cheng Jan 2024

Death Is Disparate, Jesse Cheng

SMU Law Review

The high stakes of capital punishment demand heightened procedural safeguards: death is different, so the maxim goes. One such safeguard is the doctrine of individualized sentencing mitigation, which establishes the defense’s right to introduce expansively open-ended evidence about the defendant’s unique life circumstances when making the case for mercy at the penalty trial. But some have criticized individualized mitigation for upending prior efforts by the U.S. Supreme Court to establish consistency and fairness in death verdicts. This Article takes individualized sentencing to its logical limit by considering the doctrinal possibility of “adversarial parity,” whereby open-ended individualization is also extended to …

Design And Development Of A Robotic Articulating Laparoscopic Instrument, Francisco Emmanuel T. Munsayac Jr Iii Jan 2024

Design And Development Of A Robotic Articulating Laparoscopic Instrument, Francisco Emmanuel T. Munsayac Jr Iii

Biomedical, Manufacturing and Robotics Engineering Dissertations

Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, has revolutionized the field of surgery by replacing traditional open procedures with smaller incisions and reduced patient trauma. However, the current design of manual laparoscopic devices limits the range of motion for surgeons, restricting their maneuverability to only two degrees of freedom (DOF). This dissertation is a study aimed at addressing this limitation by designing and developing a robotic articulating laparoscopic instrument capable of providing 7-DOF movement.

The research aims to enhance surgical precision and dexterity by creating a tool that offers improved freedom of movement, allowing surgeons to navigate complex anatomical structures more …

Strategic Nutritional Interventions With Probiotics And Their Relationship To Performance, Feeding Behavior, And Reticulorumen Environment In Cows And Calves Under Subacute Ruminal Acidosis Risk, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves Jan 2024

Strategic Nutritional Interventions With Probiotics And Their Relationship To Performance, Feeding Behavior, And Reticulorumen Environment In Cows And Calves Under Subacute Ruminal Acidosis Risk, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a digestive disorder in ruminants characterized by extended periods of low reticulorumen pH. This digestive disorder is commonly observed in ruminants fed diets with elevated proportions of non-fibrous carbohydrates. This disorder has been vastly studied in adult dairy cattle and has been associated with losses in milk production, changes in feeding behavior, damage to the gastrointestinal tract, and premature culling. Although vastly studied in adult cattle, there is limited research on the effects of SARA in calves. SARA might be prevented by modifying the reticulorumen environment with probiotic supplements containing lactateutilizing bacteria such as Megasphaera …
