"And I / Am The Arrow": The Narrative, Personae Construction, And Language Ideology Of Confessional Poets' Identity Performance, Madison Fuchs Jan 2024

"And I / Am The Arrow": The Narrative, Personae Construction, And Language Ideology Of Confessional Poets' Identity Performance, Madison Fuchs

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This thesis argues for consideration of linguistic features in service of raising the postmodern confessionalist poet identity as an utterance and an act of loyalty to performance. The embodiment of the confessionalist identity, attributed to the features used to adhere to the confessional mode, is realized through the invention of confessional personae. These confessional personae merge the responsibilities of the speaker and the narrator to convey a pseudo-autobiographical utterance to a designated audience. In this thesis, I analyze a sequence of poems that either possess taboo subjects or utilize linguistic functions, like indexicality and audience design, that mark its mode. …

Synthesis Of Cu-Cy Nanoparticles For Treating Pfas In Water, Ligang Wang Jan 2024

Synthesis Of Cu-Cy Nanoparticles For Treating Pfas In Water, Ligang Wang

Physics Theses - Archive

This work aims to address the cumulative harm caused by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water to human health and the ecological environment around the world. Reducing or removing PFAS pollution is an urgent need. Cu-Cy nanoparticles are photosensitizers, which were developed for photodynamic therapy of cancer in the first place. In this work, we use Cu-Cy for the catalytic degradation of PFAS. Synthesis of Cu-Cy nanoparticles in deionized water at 90 degrees Celsius is a low-cost and efficient method. We demonstrated the detailed process of synthesizing Cu-Cy nanoparticles. Under ultraviolet illumination, the synthesized Cu-Cy nanoparticles turned yellow as …

When Brain Meets Artificial Intelligence, Lu Zhang Jan 2024

When Brain Meets Artificial Intelligence, Lu Zhang

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

When we review the history of development of artificial intelligence (AI), we will find that brain science plays a pivotal role in fostering breakthroughs in AI, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs). Today, AI has made remarkable strides, particularly with the emergence of large language models (LLMs), surpassing expectations and achieving human-level performance in certain tasks. Nonetheless, an insurmountable gap remains between AI and human intelligence. It is urgent to establish a bridge between brain science and AI, promoting their mutual enhancement and collaborations. This involve establishing connections from brain science to AI (brain-inspired AI), and reversely, from AI to …

The Influence Of Intracellular Photosymbiosis On The Evolution And Function Of Cnidarian Immunity, Madison A. Emery Jan 2024

The Influence Of Intracellular Photosymbiosis On The Evolution And Function Of Cnidarian Immunity, Madison A. Emery

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Intracellular photosymbiosis with Symbiodiniaceae is facilitated by cnidarian immunity as it is required for symbiont recognition and is subsequently suppressed to maintain stable intracellular symbiosis. To date, it is unclear how the cnidarian-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis influences immune gene repertoires, immune gene expression, and disease pathology across its independent evolutions. To address these knowledge gaps, my dissertation approaches studying the cnidarian-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis through a comparative lens to determine how it shapes immune gene evolution and immune responses in divergent symbiotic cnidarian species. In chapter two I survey eight non-symbiotic and seven symbiotic cnidarians proteomes for four families of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) …

The Morphological Evolution Of The Inner Ear In Lacertoidea (Squamata), Cristian Hernandez Jan 2024

The Morphological Evolution Of The Inner Ear In Lacertoidea (Squamata), Cristian Hernandez

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The popularization of high-resolution computed tomography(HRCT) has produced a revolution in the field of comparative anatomy. This technology allows us to reach a level of morphological detail in our observations that has never been possible previously. Now we can perform digital dissections isolating structures of interest such as individual bones, soft tissue organs, and even generate 3D models of body cavities (endocasts) such as the braincase and inner ear. Encompassed with the progress of the HRCT, 3D geometric morphometrics have emerged as a common tool to address morphological questions in a statistical context that outperforms the traditional 2D geometric morphometrics. …

New Methods In Electrical Source Imaging Based On Eeg And Post-Mortem Pathology Data, Julio Cesar Enciso Alva Jan 2024

New Methods In Electrical Source Imaging Based On Eeg And Post-Mortem Pathology Data, Julio Cesar Enciso Alva

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

A central task for Neuroscience is to determine the location of electrical activity of neural origin inside the brain. Electrical signals can be recorded at a high resolution in time but low resolution in space, thus making it difficult to locate their source unambiguously. Electrical Source Imaging (ESI) is a particular framework for neural electrical source location; it is possible by modeling any additional information we may have about the electrical sources. For instance, minimal-norm estimators assume that the most plausible estimation is that with a lower norm. However, these estimators possess a low resolution in space.

In this work, …

Gaps And Overlaps In Conversation: Analyses Of Differentiating Factors, David W. Edwards Jan 2024

Gaps And Overlaps In Conversation: Analyses Of Differentiating Factors, David W. Edwards

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Human social behavior relies on communication, and much of that communication occurs in conversation. A crucial feature of conversation is turn-taking, the (usually) orderly pattern of listening and speaking that humans employ in conversation. In analyzing details of actual conversations, Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson (1974) launched the field of Conversation Analysis by outlining a set of observations of turn-taking behavior and by proposing a list of rules to explain that behavior. They noted that the vast majority of transitions from one speaker to another happen with very little gap or overlap (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson 1974: 700–701). More recently, researchers …

The Brussels Effect And The Extraterritoriality Of Delaware Corporate Law, William J. Moon Jan 2024

The Brussels Effect And The Extraterritoriality Of Delaware Corporate Law, William J. Moon

Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores possible shareholder claims in the United States that may arise  if and when member states of the European Union implement the proposed Directive  on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence. As a doctrinal matter, legal compliance  obligations for corporations incorporated in Delaware extend beyond the borders of  the United States. Under Delaware law, shareholders can bring viable fiduciary suits  against directors and officers when corporations violate applicable “positive law.”  This jurisprudence, principally aimed at ascertaining whether directors and officers  betrayed shareholders by engaging in or facilitating lawbreaking, is not limited to  complying with American law. As Delaware corporations expand …

The Relationship Between Offshore Wind Farms And Marine Wildlife In Rhode Island, Hanna Lloyd, Ashley Caputo, Brendan Foley, Catherine Chadwick, Savannah Szamborski Jan 2024

The Relationship Between Offshore Wind Farms And Marine Wildlife In Rhode Island, Hanna Lloyd, Ashley Caputo, Brendan Foley, Catherine Chadwick, Savannah Szamborski

ENV 334 Environmental Justice

Despite political and environmental controversy, research has shown that not only do offshore wind farms have minimal impact on birds, whales, and benthic organisms, but they can actually be beneficial to marine ecosystems. However, many Rhode Island and Massachusetts citizens are concerned that the construction of the Revolution wind farm will decrease the biodiversity of marine ecosystems. Current research refutes these claims on the negative impacts of offshore wind farms, stating that their construction benefits benthic communities, has little to no impact on the health of whales, and only temporarily impacts migrating bird species. New and innovative technology has found …

Malate Dehydrogenase In Parasitic Protozoans: Roles In Metabolism And Potential Therapeutic Applications, Amy L. Springer, Swati Agrawal, Eric P. Chang Jan 2024

Malate Dehydrogenase In Parasitic Protozoans: Roles In Metabolism And Potential Therapeutic Applications, Amy L. Springer, Swati Agrawal, Eric P. Chang

Biological Sciences Research

The role of malate dehydrogenase (MDH) in the metabolism of various medically significant protozoan parasites is reviewed. MDH is an NADH-dependent oxidoreductase that catalyzes interconversion between oxaloacetate and malate, provides metabolic intermediates for both catabolic and anabolic pathways, and can contribute to NAD+/NADH balance in multiple cellular compartments. MDH is present in nearly all organisms; isoforms of MDH from apicomplexans (Plasmodium falciparum, Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp.), trypanosomatids (Trypanosoma brucei, T. cruzi) and anaerobic protozoans (Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia duodenalis) are presented here. Many parasitic species have complex life cycles and depend on the environment …

The Impact Of Low-Head Dams On Freshwater Turtle Species Assemblages, Sarah Simmons Jan 2024

The Impact Of Low-Head Dams On Freshwater Turtle Species Assemblages, Sarah Simmons

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Turtles are an important component of many freshwater ecosystems, yet the impact of dams on freshwater turtles is an understudied topic globally. Past studies have focused on large dams and there is no literature addressing the impact of dams on turtle species assemblages. Dams affect turtles and their habitat by altering water flow, ecological communities, nesting and basking sites, and overwintering sites, and restricting turtle movements. Indiana has many low-head dams that no longer serve their original function, are in disrepair, and are hazardous to kayakers. There are ongoing efforts to remove these dams to improve stream ecology and safety. …

Detangling The Microbial Web: Characterizing The Soil Microbiome Of Fl Habitats To Discern Functional And Spatial Community Patterns, Halle Belden

Theses & ETDs

In the age of climate change, understanding the soil microbiome has crucial implications to food security, carbon management, and pollutant sequestration and degradation. The relationship between structure, function, and composition of microbial communities is in the early phases of being understood. In this experiment, 16S rDNA sequencing was used to characterize the microbiome of the soil with the goal of understanding if soil microbiome composition is driven by function, and therefore dependent on local ecological needs, or driven by location. Samples were taken from six distinct habitats of Triangle Ranch in Myakka City, FL. The data showed patterns of microbiome …

Biological Sciences Research

Bariatric surgery is associated with improved outcomes for several cancers, including breast cancer (BC), although the mechanisms mediating this protection are unknown. We hypothesized that elevated bile acid pools detected after bariatric surgery may be factors that contribute to improved BC outcomes. Patients with greater expression of the bile acid receptor FXR displayed improved survival in specific aggressive BC subtypes. FXR is a nuclear hormone receptor activated by primary bile acids. Therefore, we posited that activating FXR using an established FDA-approved agonist would induce anticancer effects. Using in vivo and in vitro approaches, we determined the anti-tumor potential of bile …

Doctor Or Ai? Efficient Neural Network For Response Classification In Health Consultations, Olumide E. Ojo, Olaronke O. Adebanji, Hiram Calvo, Alexander Gelbukh, Anna Feldman, Ofir Ben Shoham

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Patients seek quality healthcare because they trust their doctors and the healthcare system. However, the use of AI models in medical consultations has undermined this trust. AI systems typically depend on accurate and large volumes of data for training, but in cases of insufficient or incorrect data, this can lead to incomplete or flawed outputs. The inaccuracies in the response generated by AI systems may result in biased outcomes, compromising patient care and further eroding the trust patients place in the healthcare system. In this paper, we describe an innovative approach to distinguishing between responses generated by AI and those …

Turkish Delights: A Dataset On Turkish Euphemisms, Hasan Can Biyik, Patrick Lee, Anna Feldman Jan 2024

Turkish Delights: A Dataset On Turkish Euphemisms, Hasan Can Biyik, Patrick Lee, Anna Feldman

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Euphemisms are a form of figurative language relatively understudied in natural language processing. This research extends the current computational work on potentially euphemistic terms (PETs) to Turkish. We introduce the Turkish PET dataset, the first available of its kind in the field. By creating a list of euphemisms in Turkish, collecting example contexts, and annotating them, we provide both euphemistic and non-euphemistic examples of PETs in Turkish. We describe the dataset and methodologies, and also experiment with transformer-based models on Turkish euphemism detection by using our dataset for binary classification. We compare performances across models using F1, accuracy, and precision …

Personalizing Text-To-Image Diffusion Models By Fine-Tuning Classification For Ai Applications, Rafael Hidalgo, Nesreen Salah, Rajiv Chandra Jetty, Anupama Jetty, Aparna S. Varde

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Stable Diffusion is a captivating text-to-image model that generates images based on text input. However, a major challenge is that it is pretrained on a specific dataset, limiting its ability to generate images outside of the given data. In this paper, we propose to harness two models based on neural networks, Hypernetworks and DreamBooth, to allow the introduction of any image into Stable Diffusion, addressing versatility with minimal additional training data. This work targets AI applications such as augmenting next-generation multipurpose robots, enhancing human-robot collaboration, feeding intelligent tutoring systems, training autonomous cars, injecting subjects for photo personalization, producing high quality …

Defining 'Victim' Through Harm: Crime Victim Status In The Crime Victims' Rights Act And Other Victims' Rights Enactments, Paul Cassell, Michael Ray Morris Jan 2024

Defining 'Victim' Through Harm: Crime Victim Status In The Crime Victims' Rights Act And Other Victims' Rights Enactments, Paul Cassell, Michael Ray Morris

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Who qualifies as a “victim” is the foundational question for the Crime Victims’ Rights Act (“CVRA” or “Act”) and other crime victims’ rights laws. This article provides the first comprehensive exploration of this “victim” definition question. It traces how the CVRA (and many states) define “victim” as broadly covering anyone who has been harmed as the result of a crime. This article begins by reviewing how the definition of “victim” has evolved in the criminal justice system since the Nation’s founding. In the last several decades, as crime victims’ rights protections have proliferated, it has become necessary to define “victim” …

Abortion And The Extremism Of Bright Line Rules, Teneille R. Brown Jan 2024

Abortion And The Extremism Of Bright Line Rules, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Rather than eliding the workability or necessity of bright-line rules in certain domains, this Essay is a rallying cry for epistemic humility regarding what biological criteria can and cannot say. Policymakers sometimes lean on the biosciences to offer “objective” solutions to thorny
moral and legal issues. But descriptive biological data cannot answer normative questions on their own. Cloaking the theoretical, normative scaffolding in biological criteria is a disingenuous but common phenomenon I refer to as the “bio-legal mismatch.”

In this Essay, I discuss various abortion-restrictive statutes and cases to elucidate the problems with the bio-legal mismatch. Specifically, I explore the …

Moral Panic And The First Amendment, Michael L. Smith Jan 2024

Moral Panic And The First Amendment, Michael L. Smith

Faculty Articles

Debates over free speech in the United States frequently see advocates of strong, broad protections at odds with those who argue that unfettered free speech tends to harm society's most vulnerable. Free speech advocates invoke the marketplace of ideas and argue that the antidote to false or harmful speech is more speech. In response, critics contend that speech itself causes harm and chills counter-speech effectively excluding marginalized groups, including women and LGBTQ people, from discourse altogether. These critics support limitations on robust free speech doctrine targeting speech that harms marginalized communities.

This Article identifies a significant wrinkle in this narrative: …

Oil & Gas And Corpus Linguistics, Chad J. Pomeroy Jan 2024

Oil & Gas And Corpus Linguistics, Chad J. Pomeroy

Faculty Articles

Oil and gas law focuses on the subsurface mineral estate, which is just what it sounds like: the estate that entitles one to the subsurface, to the stuff that is underground. That, of course, includes the minerals under a given piece of property, and the value associated with that is enormous. So, it is a big deal to have the right to minerals, and, if I convey to you "the mineral estate" of Blackacre or "the minerals under Blackacre" or something similar, then I have given you something very significant, indeed. As such, it is critical to know just what …

The major populations at risk for developing pressure ulcers are older adults who have multiple risk factors that increase their vulnerability, people who are critically ill and those with spinal cord injury/disease. The reported prevalence of pressure ulcers in the United States is 2.5 million. However, this estimate is derived from acute care facilities and does not include people who are living at home or in nursing facilities. Despite the implementation of hospital and facility-based preventive measures, the incidence of pressure ulcers has not decreased in decades. In addition to the burden of pain, infection and death, it is estimated …

Cognitive Functioning In Well-Controlled Asthma, Erin Walsh Jan 2024

Cognitive Functioning In Well-Controlled Asthma, Erin Walsh

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Asthma is a common lung disease that impacts lung functioning through inflammatory based mechanisms. Past research suggests that decreased blood oxygenation due to asthma attacks may impair cognitive capabilities (Irani et al., 2017). Moreover, the observed differences in cognition between those with and without asthma may be associated with disease severity or asthma control respectively in asthma populations. The current study explored differences in cognitive functioning between college students with and without self-reported asthma. Sociodemographic data, self-reported asthma severity, and measures of asthma control were collected. The current study did not find significant differences in measures of cognitive efficiency between …

Cortisol And Executive Functioning For Young Children Attending Head Start Preschool, Zachary Weaver Jan 2024

Cortisol And Executive Functioning For Young Children Attending Head Start Preschool, Zachary Weaver

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Poverty circumstances impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal or HPA axis. Early childhood dysfunction in the HPA axis, marked by irregularities in cortisol, poses risk for the development of key executive functioning (EF) abilities. No studies have investigated the relation between cortisol and performance-based measures of EF in settings such as Head Start preschool that aim to promote positive outcomes for children facing economic hardship. This pilot study examined EF and cortisol for 50 children ages 3 to 5 years, who attended a Head Start preschool. This study was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a sample size less than half …
