Exploring Perceptions Of Self-Compassion In Individuals With Complex Trauma Symptomology: A Qualitative Approach, Brooke Roseman Jan 2024

Exploring Perceptions Of Self-Compassion In Individuals With Complex Trauma Symptomology: A Qualitative Approach, Brooke Roseman

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

The aim of the present study sought to explore the perceptions of self-compassion through the perspectives of individuals who experience complex trauma symptomology and low rates of self-compassion to inform and enhance trauma treatment. Despite a growing accumulation of studies implicating self-compassion as an integral construct for alleviating symptoms associated with complex trauma, most research designs were quantitative and did not investigate the internal processes occurring within the individual. Based on this gap, the current study expanded the scope of the current literature to include a qualitative thematic analytic approach to better understand the nuances of how this population relates …

Examining Pre-Service Teachers’ Learning Experiences Utilizing Different Modes Of Case Studies And Their Perceived Self-Efficacy In Trauma Informed Instruction, Michelle Fisher Jan 2024

Examining Pre-Service Teachers’ Learning Experiences Utilizing Different Modes Of Case Studies And Their Perceived Self-Efficacy In Trauma Informed Instruction, Michelle Fisher

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

This study examined how different modes of case-based learning activities inform the learning experiences of undergraduate pre-service teacher candidates in an introductory special education course. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I assisted university faculty as they rapidly transitioned from teaching face-to-face courses to teaching online courses. One of the most difficult things to transition to an online format was classroom observations/practicum experiences. While there is an increasing amount of classroom video content available, it is difficult to find video observation content related to hard-to-reach populations (e.g., low-incidence disabilities, or students who have experienced trauma). The data from this study included teacher …

Differentiated Instruction: A Qualitative Study Focusing On The Voices Of Elementary Teachers And Their Needs, Suzanne S. Fanelle Jan 2024

Differentiated Instruction: A Qualitative Study Focusing On The Voices Of Elementary Teachers And Their Needs, Suzanne S. Fanelle

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

This qualitative study examined teachers’ perspectives about their implementation of differentiated instruction in an effort to support district-led professional development programming. Differentiated instruction is based on well-considered goals and thorough analysis of students’ achievement, progress, and instructional needs, combined with formative assessments and progress monitoring (Van Geel et al., 2019). An initial questionnaire was administered to all K-5 teachers in a suburban school district, followed by individual interviews with three teachers who expressed that they often use differentiation in the classroom. Each of the three teachers participated in two interviews lasting 45-60 minutes each over the course of several weeks. …

Rationality, Silence, And The Numinous: Exploring The Mystical Theology Of Otto, Thurman, And Panikkar, Welling Hall

Quaker Religious Thought

In her essay “Rationality, Silence, and the Numinous: Exploring the Mystical Theology of Otto, Thurman, and Panikkar,” Welling Hall traces out the thought of these three important advocates of mysticism as they struggle with the relationship between rea- son and that which transcends rational comprehension, an issue of ongoing interest and concern to Quaker theology. In light of this essay, we might ask ourselves whether our rituals or lack thereof are an impediment to a deeper connection with God, or a means thereunto?

International Economic Law And Its Histories, Valentina Vadi Jan 2024

International Economic Law And Its Histories, Valentina Vadi

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

International economic law is best defined as the branch of public international law that governs transnational economic relations, that is, international trade, foreign direct investment, and currency exchange. It is a field that mixes and mingles law and economics. Economic theory has predominated in international economic law literature. Yet, international economic law is not just about money, trade, and capital flows. It is also about individual lives, collective destinies, and interactions among different civilizations.

The historical evolution of global economic governance remains understudied. Yet, investigating the history of international economic law is timely and important because we can learn from …

The Effect Of Body Size On Mate Choice By Ambystoma Laterale Breeding With Unisexual Salamanders, Cole Christian Duvall Jan 2024

The Effect Of Body Size On Mate Choice By Ambystoma Laterale Breeding With Unisexual Salamanders, Cole Christian Duvall

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Within the genus Ambystoma exists a complex of unisexual (all female) polyploid salamanders, which can breed with males of five sexual species of salamander. Unisexuals face intense sexual selection from diploid males, who prefer to mate with females of their own species. At the Edwin S. George Reserve (ESGR), it has been observed that LLJ unisexuals with large body sizes migrate to breeding ponds earlier than small unisexuals. A possible explanation for this behavior is that large LLJ unisexuals are sexually selected against, when compared to small unisexuals. We hypothesized that A. laterale males would prefer smaller LLJ unisexuals, when …

Calliphoridae Of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Andrew Meeds Jan 2024

Calliphoridae Of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Andrew Meeds

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

This project aimed to establish a baseline understanding of the blow fly fauna of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (OPCNM). Blow flies are the most commonly used insect in criminal investigations due to their tendency to be the earliest to locate and colonize remains. By understanding their distributions and patterns of seasonality, forensic entomologists can determine which species are most likely to colonize remains and identify which species may require further study. An 11-month comparison between fresh and aged chicken liver-baited traps improves understanding of primary and secondary colonizers in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and offers insights into effective …

Integrated Pest Management Of Maple (Acer) In Midwest Nursery Production, Darcey Hickey Jan 2024

Integrated Pest Management Of Maple (Acer) In Midwest Nursery Production, Darcey Hickey

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Introduction

In all agricultural settings, damage from arthropod pests is inevitable. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was introduced in the 1970’s as a response to increased public awareness of the hazardous effects of pesticides in the environment (Frazier, 2010). Ornamental nursery production is an important sector of US agriculture. In ornamental nurseries, pest damage is the leading cause of revenue loss (Braman et al., 2015). IPM has primarily been implemented for agricultural settings and as IPM is specific to each environment, it is important to explore the use of IPM practices in nursery production. As nurseries are found across the United …

Evolution Of The Largest Insect Orders: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Jason Thompson Jan 2024

Evolution Of The Largest Insect Orders: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Jason Thompson

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Introduction

Insects are regarded by many to be among the most successful organisms on earth, displaying remarkable diversity, resilience, and adaptations, allowing them the ability to inhabit and exploit a wide array of niche environments. If sheer numbers are utilized as a yardstick by which to measure success, it has been estimated that there may be as many as 10 quintillion insects alive and active at any given time (Sabrosky, 1952). In terms of species diversity, estimates have ranged from as many as 30 million based on research and collections in tropical forest canopies (Erwin, 1982) to more recent, conservative …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife translocation and cross-species transmission can impede control and elimination of emerging zoonotic diseases. Tracking the geographic origin of both host and virus (i.e., translocation versus local infection) may help determine the most effective response when high-risk cases of emerging pathogens are identified in wildlife. In May 2022, a coyote (Canis latrans) infected with the raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies virus variant (RRV) was collected in Lewis County, West Virginia, USA, an area free from RRV. We applied host population genomics and RRV phylogenetic analyses to determine the most likely geographic origin of the rabid coyote. Coyote …

Lhx3/4 Initiates A Cardiopharyngeal-Specific Transcriptional Program In Response To Widespread Fgf Signaling, C. J. Pickett, Hannah N. Gruner, Bradley Justin Davidson , '91 Jan 2024

Lhx3/4 Initiates A Cardiopharyngeal-Specific Transcriptional Program In Response To Widespread Fgf Signaling, C. J. Pickett, Hannah N. Gruner, Bradley Justin Davidson , '91

Biology Faculty Works

Individual signaling pathways, such as fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), can regulate a plethora of inductive events. According to current paradigms, signal-dependent transcription factors (TFs), such as FGF/MapK-activated Ets family factors, partner with lineage-determining factors to achieve regulatory specificity. However, many aspects of this model have not been rigorously investigated. One key question relates to whether lineage-determining factors dictate lineage-specific responses to inductive signals or facilitate these responses in collaboration with other inputs. We utilize the chordate model Ciona robusta to investigate mechanisms generating lineage-specific induction. Previous studies in C. robusta have shown that cardiopharyngeal progenitor cells are specified through the …

Quantitative Sustainable Design Of Urban Tree Soil Cells For Stormwater Management, Jamaya Wilson Jan 2024

Quantitative Sustainable Design Of Urban Tree Soil Cells For Stormwater Management, Jamaya Wilson

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Urban trees are critical assets to cities around the world. They act as a green infrastructure system to provide various environmental, economic and social benefits to their surrounding environments. However, the quality of life of urban trees is severely threatened by uncontrolled urbanization and climate change. The compaction of urban soils to meet the structural stability requirements for buildings and pavements directly restricts tree growth. Soil cells are green infrastructure placed in tree wells to transfer active and static loads to pavements. This allows for reduced soil compaction and increased tree root expansion. However, because the technology is still in …

Revolutionizing Our Understanding Of Specific Platelet-Pathogen Interactions, Hammodah Rawhi Hammodah Alfar Jan 2024

Revolutionizing Our Understanding Of Specific Platelet-Pathogen Interactions, Hammodah Rawhi Hammodah Alfar

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Aside from their classical role in maintaining hemostasis, platelets are considered first-line vascular guardians that influence both the innate and adaptive immune systems. This is mediated by either direct interactions with immune cells or through the release of pre-stored cytokines and chemokines upon interacting with pathogens such as viruses. While this establishes platelets as potential players in the response to pathogens, it remains unclear what platelets can do with pathogens and how important that is to immune responses, especially against viruses. Most systemic viremias, such as HIV-1, present with mild thrombocytopenia, which is mediated through several mechanisms such as a …

A Learning-Based Framework For Autonomous Robotic Operations In Resource-Denied Environments, Joseph M. Cloud Jan 2024

A Learning-Based Framework For Autonomous Robotic Operations In Resource-Denied Environments, Joseph M. Cloud

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Establishing a sustained human presence beyond Earth necessitates the development of autonomous systems capable of extracting and utilizing local resources. On the Moon, in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) is essential to reduce the dependency on Earth-based supplies. Leveraging lunar resources such as water ice for life support and fuel production or regolith for surface construction will enable long-term lunar missions and future deep space exploration. NASA's Artemis program is targeting the lunar south pole (LSP), an area with raw, yet abundant resources available. The harsh environmental conditions present significant challenges for humans operating and installing surface infrastructure. Autonomous robotic systems are …

Web-Based Visualization Of Spatial And Spatio-Temporal Data Using Integrated Datasets, Mohammad Shaito Jan 2024

Web-Based Visualization Of Spatial And Spatio-Temporal Data Using Integrated Datasets, Mohammad Shaito

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Currently, spatial geographic data can be collected for many applications that involve data on the planet earth. These collected data typically have coordinates (x,y), or longitude and latitude in map space, and thus can be located and displayed on maps. Data alone represents facts and has no meaning on its own but becomes meaningful when it is associated with application knowledge, such as elections, crimes, disease, etc. For example, there is no meaning behind those numbers (1, 23, 125, 355, . . .), yet they are data that can gain meaning when correlated with the total number of cases of …

Estimation Of Probability Of Habitat Use Of Roosevelt Elk On The Olympic Peninsula, Vincent Michael Gugliotti Jan 2024

Estimation Of Probability Of Habitat Use Of Roosevelt Elk On The Olympic Peninsula, Vincent Michael Gugliotti

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Estimating the probability of habitat use for a particular species is crucial to the direct management and conservation of that species. Without knowledge of habitat preferences, managers cannot effectively focus efforts on vital resources or landscape types. However, modelling probability of habitat use can be done in several ways which leaves room for variation and uncertainty in the estimates produced by each method. This study is an examination of the variation between two estimates of probability of habitat use while focusing on a particular subspecies of elk that inhabits a unique ecosystem relative to other elk subspecies. I modeled elk …

Somewhere In-Between: My Evolving Understanding Of Wilderness, Sebastian J. Driver Jan 2024

Somewhere In-Between: My Evolving Understanding Of Wilderness, Sebastian J. Driver

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Wilderness has many definitions and is a concept that means something different to everyone. According to the Wilderness Act of 1964, "Wilderness is an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." In recent years, the definition of wilderness is under debate as it fails to excludes the indigenous perspective. Due to the exclusion of Native Americans some have called for the removal of the word wilderness altogether. However, I propose that instead of removing the word altogether that we can redefine it to make …
