Salvation And Sweet Rolls: An Examination Of Mormon Diet Books, Rachel Noorda Jan 2024

Salvation And Sweet Rolls: An Examination Of Mormon Diet Books, Rachel Noorda

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

Religious diet books highlight the overlap between religious and diet cultures. This article examines the intersection of Mormonism, diet culture, and fatphobia through an analysis of Mormon diet books published between 1990 and 2015. The study explores how Mormon diet books leverage the Word of Wisdom (the LDS health code) to promote weight loss and reinforce religious obedience. By framing dietary compliance as a spiritual mandate, these texts link physical health and body size to moral and spiritual worthiness. This conflation of body and spirit, rooted in Mormon theology, amplifies fatphobia by promoting thinness as a sign of obedience and …

Translational Neuroscience Contributes To Understanding Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Of Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" With Treatment Implications, Stephen I. Deutsch, Jessica A. Burket, Jeffrey Elikan Jd, David R. Spiegel

Department Psychiatry & Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

Dostoyevsky's novels raise profound ethical, moral, philosophical and theological issues and, as a result, both he and his novels serve as fertile subjects of scholarly inquiry across a variety of academic disciplines. In particular, major characters in "The Brothers Karamazov" lend themselves to classical psychodynamic formulations, such as the influence of adverse childhood experiences on adult social and occupational outcomes, which in the case of Dmitry, the eldest son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, are considered in exquisitely fine detail. Prosecutor and defense attorney provide differing interpretations of how early traumas, largely due to paternal neglect and abuse, affected Dmitry's adult …

“Criminalizing” Depositions In Arbitration, Mitch Zamoff Jan 2024

“Criminalizing” Depositions In Arbitration, Mitch Zamoff

Articles

Civil litigation–style deposition practice is preventing commercial arbitration from reaching its full potential as an economical, efficient alternative to a civil lawsuit. Although there is consensus among alternative dispute resolution experts that meaningful limits must be imposed on arbitration discovery to unlock the efficiency benefits of arbitration, depositions continue to feature prominently in commercial arbitrations for at least three reasons. First, civil litigators are addicted to depositions. They reflexively propose overdone deposition practice in arbitrations that replicates their litigation experience. Second, arbitrators may hesitate to disallow deposition discovery out of fear that their awards will be vacated for failure to …

Shareholders All The Way Down: Eu Corporate Sustainability Reforms And The Structure Of Corporate Governance, Matthew Bodie Jan 2024

Shareholders All The Way Down: Eu Corporate Sustainability Reforms And The Structure Of Corporate Governance, Matthew Bodie

Articles

The laws and norms of corporate law are changing across the globe. Gone are the days when scholars could confidently predict that shareholder wealth maximization would be the universal metric of corporate success. Instead, corporate leaders, governments, workers, activists, and even shareholders are looking beyond simplistic models of shareholder primacy to a broader understanding of corporate responsibility. This new approach has taken its firmest hold in the European Union, where three directives over the last decade have reshaped reporting requirements and directors’ duties in significant ways, pushing for greater accountability and attention to the needs of stakeholders.

Planning For Pandemic And Epidemic-Related Scarcity Of Medicines, Sapna Kumar Jan 2024

Planning For Pandemic And Epidemic-Related Scarcity Of Medicines, Sapna Kumar

Articles

This chapter proposes an ex ante approach to tackling drug scarcity. Entities funding pandemic- and epidemic-related research should contractually require recipients to produce sufficient quantities of resulting medicines. The recipient would agree in the event of a future shortage to share its technology and know-how with a qualified third-party manufacturer, in exchange for compensation. Alternatively, funding entities could more broadly utilize dormant licenses, which activate in the event of a pandemic or epidemic, and which require rights holders to license out technology and know-how to alleviate shortages. Such provisions could go even further, integrating reasonable pricing assurances and ensuring access …

Presidential Investment In The Administrative State, Nicholas Bednar, David E. Lewis Jan 2024

Presidential Investment In The Administrative State, Nicholas Bednar, David E. Lewis

Articles

In this paper, we explain how presidents strategically invest in administrative capacity, noting that presidents have few incentives to invest effort in capacity building in most agencies. We test our account with two analyses. First, we examine the time it took for the Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden Administrations to nominate individuals to appointed positions. We find that presidents prioritize appointments to policy over management positions and that nominations occur sooner in agencies that implement presidential priorities. Second, we examine the responses of federal executives to the 2020 Survey on the Future of Government Service to see whether perceptions of …

Long-Term Cardiometabolic Effects Of Preconceptional And Prenatal Opioid Exposure In The Adult Offspring, Nermin Hassan Mohamed Selim Ahmed Jan 2024

Long-Term Cardiometabolic Effects Of Preconceptional And Prenatal Opioid Exposure In The Adult Offspring, Nermin Hassan Mohamed Selim Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Opioid use disorder (OUD), one of the greatest public health threats in the US, requires urgent attention. In 2022, the CDC reported 107,941 overdose deaths, over 70% attributed to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl (FEN). An alarming increase in opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnoses in pregnant people resulted in a 5-fold rise in cases of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). This condition elicits sympathetic overactivity, neural hyperexcitability, and a stress reaction characterized by tachycardia and hypertension. Whether prenatal exposure to fentanyl induces cardiovascular dysfunction in the offspring remains undetermined, impeding the timely development of strategies to mitigate OUD-related health risks …

Feeding Systems And Fresh Lamb Color Stability, Koushik Mondal Jan 2024

Feeding Systems And Fresh Lamb Color Stability, Koushik Mondal

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Consumers consider the surface color of fresh lamb as the indicator of freshness and wholesomeness, which affects their purchase decisions. The redox chemistry of myoglobin (Mb) determines the color of fresh lamb. Artificial raising on milk replacer (a pre-weaning strategy) as well as red clover supplementation are management strategies used in lamb production. This thesis focuses on the effects of artificial raising on milk replacer and red clover supplementation on the color and oxidative stability of fresh lamb.

In the first experiment, the effect of pre-weaning with milk replacer on the carcass attributes, color stability and lipid oxidation of lamb …

Documented Outcomes Of Informal Caregivers Delivering Home-Based Interventions To Persons Living With Dementia: A Scoping Review, Andrea H. Meller

Social Work Theses - Archive

Most people living with dementia in the United States reside at home with informal caregivers. Yet research regarding non-pharmacological interventions for persons living with dementia is mainly conducted in institutional settings. Also, research into the impacts of interventions for persons with dementia on informal caregivers is scarce. This scoping review aims to map the breadth of literature on outcomes of informal caregivers delivering home-based interventions to people with dementia through the lens of the stress process model. Using the Arskey & O’Malley framework, an initial database search yielded 3,977 studies of which 22 were included in this review. Results revealed …

A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action: How American Unwillingness To Escalate Emboldens Mexico’S Populist Ambitions, David Montero

American University International Law Review

Part II of this Comment will explain the history of Mexico’s relationship with trade, as well as the finer details of the dispute resolution provisions of the USMCA that are of note. Part III will analyze two key violations of the USMCA by AMLO’s administration, contrasting the American response between the two and demonstrating the cycle of violations that has largely been created as a result of the failure to act. Part IV provides a simple recommendation to the U.S. administration for how to effectively halt its southern neighbor’s decline into unfettered populism that harms U.S. trade interests: employ the …

Policing The Strait: How China’S Policing Of The Taiwan Strait Violates The U.N. Convention On The Law Of The Sea, Elizabeth C. Parker Jan 2024

Policing The Strait: How China’S Policing Of The Taiwan Strait Violates The U.N. Convention On The Law Of The Sea, Elizabeth C. Parker

American University International Law Review

As tensions continue to grow across the Taiwan Strait, China is using domestic maritime law to justify an expansion of police power in the international waters of the Taiwan Strait in violation of international law. This Comment will argue that the People’s Republic of China has violated the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (“UNCLOS”) by implementing non-resource-related police power in waters meant only for resource exploration and management. In comparing the language of China’s domestic maritime law with that of UNCLOS, this Comment will show that the People’s Republic of China has used domestic law to reinterpret …

An Efficient And High-Throughput Method For The Evaluation Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Frozen Brain Samples After Traumatic Brain Injury., Hemendra J Vekaria, Olivia J. Kalimon, Paresh Prajapati, Gopal V. Velmurugan, Patrick G Sullivan Jan 2024

Velmurugan, Patrick G Sullivan

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial function analysis is a well-established method used in preclinical and clinical investigations to assess pathophysiological changes in various disease states, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although there are multiple approaches to assess mitochondrial function, one common method involves respirometric assays utilizing either Clark-type oxygen electrodes or fluorescent-based Seahorse analysis (Agilent). However, these functional analysis methods are typically limited to the availability of freshly isolated tissue samples due to the compromise of the electron transport chain (ETC) upon storage, caused by freeze-thaw-mediated breakdown of mitochondrial membranes. In this study, we propose and refine a method for evaluating electron flux through …

Ironic And Absurd Discourse Of Dress And Appearance On Social Media, Craig Hobin Jan 2024

Ironic And Absurd Discourse Of Dress And Appearance On Social Media, Craig Hobin

Major Papers by TMD Master of Science Students

The purpose of this paper is to interpret how absurdity can be ironic through dress and appearance. By using two popular culture examples, one contemporary and one from the 1990’s, I look at how existential philosophies impact comparisons to society and how their reactions of dress and appearance can be ironic. This paper discusses Lee Alexander McQueen and Austin Babbitt (AssPizza) to find the intersection of irony, absurdism, social comparison, and dress and appearance. These two examples prove irony can be interpreted through an understanding of existentialism and how one views society and if they draw comparisons to their peers. …

The Influence Of Ecoregions And Land Use/Land Cover On Fish Assemblages In Southern Minnesota, Masaki Hara Jan 2024

The Influence Of Ecoregions And Land Use/Land Cover On Fish Assemblages In Southern Minnesota, Masaki Hara

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Level III ecoregions of the conterminous United States provide a framework for facilitating environmental understanding and aiding environmental management practices. In southern Minnesota near Mankato, there are two level III ecoregions: to the east is North Central Hardwood Forest (NCHF) and to the west are Western Corn Belt Plains (WCBP). They contained a combined 104 fish species in local lakes. However, little is known about how land use and land cover affect fish assemblages in these lakes, which are indicator fish species, and if any invasive fish species are adversely impacting native fish populations. This study addresses these issues through …

Journal Articles: Anesthesiology

Pyrethroid pesticides have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While behavioral effects of pyrethroid exposure have been previously reported, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we hypothesized that exposure to deltamethrin (DM), a widely used pyrethroid pesticide known for its neurotoxicity during early developmental stages, induces brain dysfunction through alterations in brain-derived extracellular vesicle (BDEV) signaling. Using a well-established rodent model of early life DM exposure within the recommended no observable effect level, we isolated BDEVs from postnatal 30-day-old vehicle-exposed (control) and DM-exposed mice using a differential sucrose density gradient. Following …

After Beaver: Reviving A Unified Test For Section 24 Charter Exclusion, Chris Rudnicki Jan 2024

After Beaver: Reviving A Unified Test For Section 24 Charter Exclusion, Chris Rudnicki

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Exclusion under section 24(2) of the Charter is an important part of every criminal judge’s remedial toolkit. But in Beaver, the Supreme Court significantly constrained access to section 24(2) by endorsing the “fresh start” doctrine. Evidence will not be “obtained in a manner” that infringed the Charter — and thus will be put beyond the remedial reach of section 24(2) — where police conduct following a breach “severs” its temporal, contextual or causal connection to the evidence sought to be excluded. In my view, this doctrine will deprive worthy claimants of proportionate remedies. In this paper, I explore whether claimants …

The increased use and ubiquity of mobile blue wavelength light-emitting devices raises the possibility of prevalent negative effects on sleep and quality of life, particularly among college-aged individuals where use of these devices is especially frequent.

Methods: In 2024, cross-sectional, internet survey-based study designed to examine the relationship between self-reported exposure to mobile devices and measures of sleepiness and quality of life. Eligible participants were undergraduate students at Belmont University, aged 18+ years …

Narrow But Deep: The Mcculloch Principle, Collective-Action Theory, And Section Three Enforcement, Neil S. Siegel Jan 2024

Narrow But Deep: The Mcculloch Principle, Collective-Action Theory, And Section Three Enforcement, Neil S. Siegel

Constitutional Commentary, Vol. 37 and later (2023–present)

In Trump v. Anderson, 144 S. Ct. 662 (2024), the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Colorado Supreme Court erred in excluding former President Donald J. Trump from the Republican Party’s primary ballot in the state. The Court reasoned that the Constitution makes Congress, not the states, solely responsible for enforcing Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. Scholars of Section 3 have persuasively argued that Section 3 is self-executing, so the Court’s rationale lacks a sound basis in the original or contemporary meaning of the text of the Civil War Amendments, the original intent of their drafters, …

The Right To Fail, Alexander Boni-Saenz Jan 2024

The Right To Fail, Alexander Boni-Saenz

Articles

In 2013, the Department of Justice entered into a consent decree with the state of New York concerning the lives of 4,000 people with mental illness who had been segregated into group homes in the state. These group homes were overcrowded and dangerous, and New York agreed to move all but the most severely mentally ill people into supportive housing, if they desired it. This outcome was seen as vindicating the dignity of risk, a foundational value of disability rights scholarship and politics. This principle holds that it is normatively desirable for individuals to be able to make their own …

From Bushels To Barrels: A Descriptive Analysis Of The U.S. Whiskey Industry, Ryan Murphy

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the U.S. whiskey industry, emphasizing distilleries' geographic distribution, operational characteristics, and the agricultural landscapes surrounding them. Particular attention is given to the feasibility of U.S. distilleries locally sourcing grains used in production. Grain demand ranges were estimated for the 1,485 distilleries analyzed within this study. Using cropland and yield data from the USDA, local grain availability was approximated for comparison. Results indicate that a distillery's local sourcing feasibility is significantly impacted by its production capacity and geographic location.

Additionally, this research documents the development of an interactive web application designed to evaluate the …
