Gwayak Ateg Onaakonigewi Dibenjigewin: Decolonizing Jurisdiction In Anishinaabe Tribal Courts, Kekek Jason Stark
Nebraska Law Review
It is generally understood as a matter of federal Indian law that determinations of tribal law should properly be interpreted by tribal courts. This is because tribal courts do not always adhere to the same legal philosophy as their settler colonial counterparts. Many tribal courts subscribe to traditional law, which is an “essential source” of tribal jurisprudence. Anishinaabe communities have maintained a rich body of traditional tribal law since time immemorial. However, these customary law principles are only recently being included in modern-day Anishinaabe tribal court determinations. This Article builds upon the Anishinaabe law principles articulated in recent opinions and …

Lessons From An Iconic Grouper: Sex, Science, And Serendipity, Yvonne J. Sadovy De Mitcheson
Gulf and Caribbean Research
From a common little damselfish and spectacular grouper aggregations, to disappearing reef fishes and the dark side of the international seafood trade, my journey has passed through a fascinating and worrying period of change in the way we view and treat our oceans. Although much of my career has been in the Indo—Pacific, I focus here mainly on my professional ‘roots’ in the Caribbean and on the Nassau Grouper Epinephelus striatus, a species that kept me curious, taught me patience, never to assume and always to stay hopeful. This fish is almost an obsession; why can we not better safeguard …
Assessing College Students' Knowledge Of Applied Behavior Analysis And Evaluating The Effects Of A Fact Sheet To Address Misconceptions, Hannah Goike
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Previous research has indicated that college students consistently endorse misconceptions about behavior analysis (e.g., use of physical punishment, Applied Behavior Analysis [ABA] is only intended for people with autism). This study aims to assess college students’ knowledge of behavior analysis and identify the extent to which participants are likely to endorse common misconceptions. This study replicated Artzen et al. (2010) and extended it by adding questions related to the recent trends and reported misunderstandings in the field of ABA that stem from public misconceptions. The current study also evaluated the effects of a brief intervention for improving participant knowledge of …
The Integration Of Certified Therapy Dog Teams Into Special Education: Insights Of Volunteer Handlers, Rana Aabed
The Integration Of Certified Therapy Dog Teams Into Special Education: Insights Of Volunteer Handlers, Rana Aabed
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The purpose of this study was to better understand how certified volunteer dog therapy handlers can be integrated into special education settings. Although the pet therapy discourse confirms the overall impact dog therapy has on youth’s psychological health (e.g., Groenewoud et al., 2023), research that could elucidate how volunteer handlers modify the way they have their dogs interact with special education populations is a present-day need that has otherwise not appeared in the literature. In response, this study involved a qualitative multiple-case investigation about the role of volunteer certified handlers and the dog therapy provisions they offer special education populations. …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) comprise >10 000 synthetic compounds that are globally distributed and highly persistent but remain challenging to monitor. Here we assess the utility of baleen─an accreting, keratinaceous tissue that baleen whales use for filter-feeding─to track PFAS dynamics in marine food webs. In six species investigated, PFAS were detected in all baleen tested (n = 18 plates, 220 samples, ∑10PFAS range of 0.02–60.5 ng/g of dry weight), at levels higher than those of other tissue types besides liver. Three of the species in our data set had not been tested for PFAS contamination previously, …

Antibiotic Resistance In A Coastal River In Mississippi, Usa – Potential Drivers, Shuo Shen, Wei Wu, Eric A. Saillant, Darrell Jay Grimes
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are major sources of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in water bodies. Most studies on the impact of WWTPs on antibiotic resistance have focused on freshwater systems, with little information on coastal and estuarine waters with variable salinity. This study monitored seasonal levels of ARGs at the effluent and downstream of the Pascagoula— Moss Point WWTP in the lower Pascagoula River, a coastal river in southeastern Mississippi, USA. Surface water samples were collected seasonally at upstream, outflow, and 3 downstream sites from February to November 2016. Bacterial resistance to sulfamethazine, tetracycline, and …

Safe Storage Laws And Self-Defense From Heller To Bruen, Joseph Blocher
Safe Storage Laws And Self-Defense From Heller To Bruen, Joseph Blocher
Faculty Scholarship
This short Essay, written for a symposium honoring Walter Dellinger, explores one of the most underappreciated—and indefensible—holdings of District of Columbia v. Heller, the landmark Second Amendment case that Walter ably argued for the District. Most scholars have focused on Heller’s announcement of an “individual” right to keep and bear arms for private purposes and its invalidation of the District’s prohibition on handguns. But along the way, almost in passing, the Court also struck down the District’s requirement that firearms be kept “unloaded and dissembled or bound by a trigger lock or similar device.” It did this not by asking …

Introducing Biosimilar Competition For Cell And Gene Therapy Products, Brian Canter, Sabine Sussman, Stephen Colvill, Nitzan Arad, Elizabeth Staton, Arti Rai
Faculty Scholarship
This article provides an early analysis of the potential for creating future biosimilar competition for cell and gene therapies (CGTs) to lower prices and improve patient access, building on a unique set of interviews with relevant experts. Our discussion addressed regulatory, manufacturing, intellectual property, and market size challenges. Due to CGTs’ complexity, meeting the regulatory requirement of ‘high similarity with no clinically meaningful differences’ will be difficult. Gene therapies are likely better candidates for biosimilar development than cell therapies. Biosimilarity should be met when gene therapy biosimilars contain the same genetic sequence as a reference product, and the variability in …

Lysophosphatidylcholine Acyltransferase-2 (Lpcat-2) & Protein S-Acylation In Macrophage Innate Immunity, Christian Good
Lysophosphatidylcholine Acyltransferase-2 (Lpcat-2) & Protein S-Acylation In Macrophage Innate Immunity, Christian Good
School of Biomedical Sciences Theses
Lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase (LPCAT)2 is an enzyme involved in remodelling glycerophospholipids within cell membranes and the generation of platelet-activating factor. LPCAT2 also mediates lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cytokine responses in both murine and human macrophages. Investigations into the mechanism behind LPCAT2 involvement into LPS-induced cytokine responses identified that LPCAT2 translocates to membrane lipid raft domains and associates with toll-like receptor (TLR)4 following activation by LPS. The mechanism behind this is not known, however LPCAT2 appears to have a role in regulating innate immune responses via lipid raft signalling complexes and understanding the molecular details of these mechanisms could help in the development of …

Non-Technical Skills Proficiency In Aviation Pilots: A Systematic Review, Seda Ceken
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This systematic review aims to examine the role of non-technical competencies in pilot selection and flight operations, and explore the methods used for their assessment. It has been discerned that relying solely on technical flying skills is insufficient for a pilot; there is a growing understanding that a pilot candidate must possess and adeptly employ non-technical skills, commonly referred to as Crew Resource Management (CRM) skills. This systematic review was designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. For this review, a systematic search was conducted across seven databases. Seventeen publications were included in …

Warwilding: A Weapon And A Shield In The Midst Of Conflict, Lynn Ma
UC Law Environmental Journal
War disrupts the lives of people, governments, and the wider environment. The purpose of this article is to examine how rewilding and ecological planning could be applied to military logistics to enhance peace and security amid war and post-war periods. This is explored through a concept that conservationists have coined “WarWilding.” I will develop my conclusions by analyzing WarWilding case studies from active warfare and post-war zones. To evaluate the boundaries in the ethics of WarWilding, this paper will frame the analyses around provisions in the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification …

Juvenile Dungeness Face High Predation Risk From Green Crabs Across Increased Temperatures At Different Salinities, Trever Gelling
Juvenile Dungeness Face High Predation Risk From Green Crabs Across Increased Temperatures At Different Salinities, Trever Gelling
Environmental Science and Management Undergraduate Departmental Honors Theses
Marine heatwaves, altered precipitation regimes, and other changing climate conditions are altering the abiotic conditions of Oregon's estuaries. Furthermore, warmer water temperatures are correlated with the range expansion and population growth of the invasive and broadly tolerant Carcinus maenas, the green crab, in Oregon. Metacarcinus magister, Dungeness crab, one of Oregon’s most valuable fishery species, is also facing these climate stressors, and their young that recruit to estuaries overlap with C. maenas adults. Therefore, we wanted to determine impacts of C. maenas on young-of-the-year (YOTY) M. magister and the roles of salinity, temperature, and predator size in mediating …
