How Do Babies Come To Know What Babies Know?, David S. Moore, David J. Lewkowicz
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Elizabeth Spelke’s What Babies Know is a scholarly presentation of core knowledge theory and a masterful compendium of empirical evidence that supports it. Unfortunately, Spelke’s principal theoretical assumption is that core knowledge is simply the innate product of cognitive evolution. As such, her theory fails to explicate the developmental mechanisms underlying the emergence of the cognitive systems underlying that knowledge.

Teaching For Transpersonal Learning, Paul Cunningham
Teaching For Transpersonal Learning, Paul Cunningham
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This article addresses the “why,” “what,” and “how” of teaching for transpersonal learning. Why transpersonal education is relevant for addressing modern social problems and the global ecological crisis, what it is like to teach for transpersonal learning, and how transpersonal learning becomes transformative are discussed. Three promising options in technology and consciousness studies for transpersonal learning—transpersonal media, multistate studies, and entheogenic education—are described and the challenges of introducing transpersonal education into academic settings and assessing educational (student) learning outcomes are reviewed. The relevance of Mezirow’s Transformation Theory to transpersonal educational psychology, with special attention to ecological perspective transformation, is then …

Dog burials are known from Egypt from the Predynastic period from c. 3500 BC onward and continue into the Roman era. Different burials have been interpreted in a variety of ways: companion/pet/working animals, associated with divinities, and as guardians. This paper presents a unique interment of a single human and a group of dogs found in the cemetery of Deir el-Banat in the Fayum (Egypt), which can be interpreted as either a religio-magical protective deposit for the cemetery, or a religio-medical one, involving the sacrifice of several animals.
Role Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Signaling In Diet-Enhanced Bone Elongation, Cassaundra A. White
Role Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Signaling In Diet-Enhanced Bone Elongation, Cassaundra A. White
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Childhood obesity has increased precipitously to the point that almost 20% of children between the ages of 2 and 19 have been diagnosed with obesity. While obesity is a complex metabolic disorder, one contributing factor is diet, particularly a diet high in fat. Among many problems associated with diet-induced obesity, the impact on skeletal health is often overlooked. In addition to increased stress on the skeleton due to excess weight, obesity also disrupts the endocrine and immune systems that, in turn, can secondarily alter skeletal growth. Obesity during the early years of childhood is particularly detrimental because the skeleton is …

Nasally inoculated influenza cases reported milder symptoms and shed lower viral RNA load in exhaled breath aerosols (EBA) than people with classic influenza-like illness including fever, in a previous study. Whether nasally inoculated influenza is representative of mild natural influenza infection, the majority of natural infections, is unknown. Here, we extend our previous analyses to include a broader range of community-acquired influenza cases. Previously, we reported on two groups: (A) volunteers intranasally inoculated with a dose of 5.5 log10TCID50 of influenza A/Wisconsin/67/2005 (H3N2) and (B) cases with cough and sore throat plus fever or a positive rapid antigen test recruited …
Deep Dive: An Investigation Of What It Means To Be An Octopus Mother, Evelyn Beauchemin
Deep Dive: An Investigation Of What It Means To Be An Octopus Mother, Evelyn Beauchemin
Theses & ETDs
Octopuses are fascinating animals with a bad reputation, however, they are slowly but surely gaining the recognition they deserve. The goal of this study was to identify a hierarchy of motivating factors in brooding octopuses, using three O. joubini that had laid eggs in captivity as case studies. To address feeding motivation, I continued to supply the animals food, both free-roaming and directly to their dens. To address the importance of hiding, I disturbed the dens and monitored the animals’ responses. To address the importance of brooding, I encouraged one subject to make choices between returning to her eggs or …
Quantitative Analysis Of Freely-Circulating Vs. Exosomal Micrornas In Canine Congestive Heart Failure Secondary To Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease, Lola Lyons
Theses & ETDs
Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) remains to be the number one cause of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) in dogs. Mainly characterized by mitral regurgitation in the left atrium, MMVD can lead to fatal heart failure down the line. MicroRNAs, which are small, noncoding RNAs about 21-25 nucleotides in length that regulate gene expression, can be found freely-circulating throughout the blood, extracellular fluid, intracellular fluid and interstitial fluid, or in extracellular vesicles such as exosomes. These vesicles play a role in the transportation of various molecules as well as in intercellular communication. Previous studies show microRNAs display statistically significant expression levels …

Nir-Responsive Methotrexate-Modified Iron Selenide Nanorods For Synergistic Magnetic Hyperthermic, Photothermal, And Chemodynamic Therapy, Wai Ching Liu
Department of Food and Health Sciences
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate among women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel therapies to effectively treat this disease. In this study, iron selenide nanorods (FeSe2 NRs) were designed for use in magnetic hyperthermic, photothermal, and chemodynamic therapy (MHT/PTT/CDT) for breast cancer. To illustrate their efficacy, FeSe2 NRs were modified with the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX). MTX-modified FeSe2 (FeSe2- MTX) exhibited excellent controlled drug release properties. Fe2+ released from FeSe2 NRs induced the release of •OH from H2O2 via a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, enhancing the efficacy of CDT. Under alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulation …

Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley
Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
That Dermestes maculatus feeding can leave marks on bones is established in the literature - that D. maculatus routinely mark bones is not. Our results here, exposing fleshed bones to D. maculatus adults and immatures for almost two months after complete tissue removal, indicate that under natural conditions D. maculatus do not feed on bones. The key issue seems to be the ability of D. maculatus to seek new food sources versus being confined (and eventually starving) on bones. In a natural setting, once a food supply is exhausted, D. maculatus would seek new food …

Escaping The Peripherality: Local Experiences Of The Us Military Presence In Northeast Thailand, Wipawee Srifa
Escaping The Peripherality: Local Experiences Of The Us Military Presence In Northeast Thailand, Wipawee Srifa
CGU Theses & Dissertations
From 1964 to 1976, the United States military deployed troops to Thailand as part of its strategic operations during the Vietnam War. Most of these military personnel were stationed in Isan, a northeastern region of Thailand, due to its proximity to key bombing targets in Indochina. Historically, Isan was affiliated with Laos and was assimilated into Thai governance in the late eighteenth century. Until the 1950s, most of Isan’s population resided in rural, agricultural communities and were politically, economically, and culturally marginalized by mainstream Thai society. The Thai state’s internal colonization exacerbated socioeconomic disparities for Isan peasants, severely restricting avenues …
