Raccoon Density Estimation From Camera Traps For Raccoon Rabies Management, Amy J. Davis, Wesley C. Dixon, Richard B. Chipman, Amy T. Gilbert, Jacob E. Hill, James C. Beasley, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Guha Dharmarajan Jan 2024

Raccoon Density Estimation From Camera Traps For Raccoon Rabies Management, Amy J. Davis, Wesley C. Dixon, Richard B. Chipman, Amy T. Gilbert, Jacob E. Hill, James C. Beasley, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Guha Dharmarajan

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Density estimation for unmarked animals is particularly challenging, yet density estimates are often necessary for effective wildlife management. Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are the primary terrestrial wildlife reservoir for Lyssavirus rabies within the United States. The raccoon rabies variant (RRVV) is actively managed at landscape scales using oral rabies vaccination (ORV) within the eastern United States. To effectively manage RRVV, it is important to know the density of raccoons to appropriately scale the density of ORV baits distributed on the landscape. We compared methods to estimate raccoon densities from camera‐trap data versus more intensive capture‐mark‐recapture (CMR) estimates across 2 …

Mechanosensory Encoding In Ex Vivo Muscle–Nerve Preparations, Stephen N. Housley, Evelyn A. Gardolinski, Paul Nardelli, J'Ana Reed, Mark M. Rich, Timothy C. Cope Jan 2024

Mechanosensory Encoding In Ex Vivo Muscle–Nerve Preparations, Stephen N. Housley, Evelyn A. Gardolinski, Paul Nardelli, J'Ana Reed, Mark M. Rich, Timothy C. Cope

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Our objective was to evaluate an ex vivo muscle-nerve preparation used to study mechanosensory signalling by low threshold mechanosensory receptors (LTMRs). Specifically, we aimed to assess how well the ex vivo preparation represents in vivo firing behaviours of the three major LTMR subtypes of muscle primary sensory afferents, namely type Ia and II muscle spindle (MS) afferents and type Ib tendon organ afferents. Using published procedures for ex vivo study of LTMRs in mouse hindlimb muscles, we replicated earlier reports on afferent firing in response to conventional stretch paradigms applied to non-contracting, that is passive, muscle. Relative to in vivo …

Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table

Now it is Fire. Winds began our unfinished, prior conversation1 We had to explore those unforgotten experiences. Your long search did not start with your time in Bordeaux nor your memory of that Northeaster welcoming you there and then opening your hymn, Remembrance / Andenken. I had started reading your earlier song of praise, The Rhine / Der Rhein, with great care. After reading Andenken once, preparing for a conversation with you about The Rhein, pursuing anything else was not possible before talking with you about your visit to Bordeaux rivers and vineyards. Expecting, finally, to return to Der Rhein, …

Uni Lgbt* History, Hunter Thompson , Compiler/Editor

UNI Proud Documents

This project aims to provide the future of queer activists of this campus a better picture of the roots of activism on this campus. I think of this project as my own personal version of The Celluloid Closet, but instead of old movies it's old Northern Iowan articles. There has always been resistance at UNI, and this document hopes to show that resistance. It is however by no means complete, as often resistance has to occur in the shadows. What this work is hours and hours of searching the archives of The Northern Iowan, for those brief snapshots …

2024 State Of The Commonwealth Report, Vinod Agarwal, James V. Koch, Feng Lian, Anna Makhorkina, Melody Nguyen, Terry Parker, Mohamed Rahoui, Jay Walker, Leiu Yuenyong

State of the Commonwealth Reports

This is Old Dominion University’s 10th annual State of the Commonwealth Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, Brian Hemphill, Ph.D., the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.

Our work seeks to contribute to the conversation about how Virginia can foster growth across the Commonwealth without glossing over the challenges we face. We want to encourage difficult conversations to …

Reimagining Lives Radically In A Human And Non-Human World How Do We Come To Know Lives; How Do We Move Towards A Better Balance?, Jorge Alvarez Jan 2024

Reimagining Lives Radically In A Human And Non-Human World How Do We Come To Know Lives; How Do We Move Towards A Better Balance?, Jorge Alvarez

Theses & ETDs

This thesis begins with writing from Clarice Lispector (1943-1977), a Brazilian author who emigrated with her family at the age of two from the Ukrainian village of Chechelnik to near Rio De Janairo. Her family was Jewish, and they fled in the early 1920s amid a brutal Russian revolution taking place in the country and the resulting violent pogroms that targeted Jewish people. Thus, Lispector grew up with her family in Brazil and claimed it as her own nationality, writing in Portuguese, and causing intrigue in comparison to other Latin American authors for her narrative style. She has been recognized …

A Literature Review Of Learning Capabilities In Non-Avian Reptiles, Sarah Birdsong Jan 2024

A Literature Review Of Learning Capabilities In Non-Avian Reptiles, Sarah Birdsong

Theses & ETDs

Cognitive abilities of various animal species can be measured in their capability to learn. Reptile learning capabilities is a subject that is less studied than their mammalian and avian counterparts. This review sets out to evaluate evidence over 34 years of research on reptiles of various species and assesses whether there exists data that reptiles have the cognitive potential to learn in a variety of ways, as studies of other species have concluded. In this paper several studies examined the hypothesis that several reptile species are capable of learning from associations between positive and negative conditioned stimuli, including ways that …

Motherhood And Femininity For Supernatural Women In Pu Songling’S Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales From A Chinese Studio), Emily Connell

Theses & ETDs

Pu Songling (1640-1715) was a prolific author well-known for his stories that centered around strange and supernatural occurrences. His main female characters, usually love interests or mothers, display an understanding of women and the potential they hold narratively. By analyzing his ghost and fox spirit women, this thesis shows that despite keeping a conservative perspective in his works, Pu Songling played with the feminine ideals popular at the time to create characters with depth and nuance. With his ghost women portraying innocent eroticism and the fox women displaying a more mature sexual desire, he was able to use the differences …

From The Top Rope: Melodrama, Ritual, And Gender In Lucha Libre, Rebecca Wickham Jan 2024

From The Top Rope: Melodrama, Ritual, And Gender In Lucha Libre, Rebecca Wickham

Theses & ETDs

This exploration takes on Mexican professional wrestling, or lucha libre as a distinct form of wrestling expressed through its spectacle’s continuity of aesthetic, balletic maneuvers, and attached iconography. Beginning with an analysis of the melodrama and fiction on the creation of lucha libre, the study navigates through the development of lucha libre in connection to fictional expectations of melodrama, its ritual aspects both inside and outside of the ring, and its gendered components within the films created. Drawing on the works of Peter Brooks, Roland Barthes, Catherine Bell, and Heather Levi, I examine how certain aspects of the sport can …

Stress Physiology Of Bats: Methodological And Biological Studies Using Hair Cortisol, Marcus Jorgensen Jan 2024

Stress Physiology Of Bats: Methodological And Biological Studies Using Hair Cortisol, Marcus Jorgensen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stress physiology in bats can be studied through various non-invasive methods, with hair cortisol levels being a particularly valuable measure. Hair cortisol analysis provides insights into the long-term stress levels and physiological states of bats, as it captures cortisol accumulation over time. This method helps researchers understand how different stressors and environmental factors impact bat populations. In mydissertation, I focused on assessing the validity and reliability of hair cortisol measurements in bats and explored the implications of these measurements for understanding bat stress physiology. In the first chapter, I evaluated the use of commercial enzyme immunoassay kits to measure cortisol …

IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022

The Protective Role Of Melanin Within The Teleost Inner Ear, Gabriel Heckerman Jan 2024

The Protective Role Of Melanin Within The Teleost Inner Ear, Gabriel Heckerman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Melanin is the dark pigment responsible for influencing the color of bodily structures, and it is variably present throughout human and animal tissue. Melanin is also found within the mammalian inner ear, and it has been observed that a lack of melanin is associated with greater susceptibility to sensorineural hearing loss. In this study, melanin levels of the inner ears of different color morphs of the fish species Poecilia latipinna and Cyprinus carpio were measured and the potential protective role of that melanin from acoustical stress was examined. Previous research showed that black morphs of both species exhibited less noise-induced …

Power, Capacity, Disposition And Categorical Properties: A Roughly Aristotelian Proposal, Angus Brook Jan 2024

Power, Capacity, Disposition And Categorical Properties: A Roughly Aristotelian Proposal, Angus Brook

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

This paper proposes a roughly Aristotelian account of powers ontology. In doing so, the paper uses the distinction found in Aristotle between four analogous senses of potency to explain causation and the existence-essence distinction in substances. On this basis, the paper offers some justification in support of the claims that powers and dispositions are the truth-makers of categorical properties and that categorical properties are ontologically dependent upon powers and dispositions.
