Artificial Intelligence Models May Not Have Owners, Devin Owens
Artificial Intelligence Models May Not Have Owners, Devin Owens
Akron Law Student Publications
While new artificial intelligence models see unprecedented investment, serious questions exist about the ownership of the models themselves under existing intellectual property structures. AI models, as compilations of information created largely autonomously by algorithms from sets of training data, may not be suited for the subject matter and inventorship/authorship requirements of traditional patent and copyright protection. The literature assumes that trade secrecy will protect AI models, which are largely kept secret on remote servers away from direct inspection by users, but model extraction attack methods known since 2016 are effective in copying any AI model that can be queried. This …

What Is The Best Way To Combat The Symptoms Of Knee Osteoarthritis?, Anna Reich
What Is The Best Way To Combat The Symptoms Of Knee Osteoarthritis?, Anna Reich
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease that a significant percentage of adults contend with. This degenerative joint disease causes the breakdown of tissue at the joint, which leads to symptoms of pain, decreased function, and limited range of motion. There are various methods of combating these symptoms. Treatment options include basic lifestyle modifications and other nonpharmacological methods, oral and topical drugs, intraarticular injections, and surgery. There are benefits and risks, as well as a lack of effectiveness associated with these treatments. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether there is an optimal treatment for this disease. Based on the …

Human wildlife interactions (HWI) pose a complex challenge for wildlife managers. Human encroachment into wildlife habitat and the growing number of outdoor recreationists are increasing the frequency of contact and conflict, especially in regions such as the Front Range of Colorado. Geographic information systems (GIS), which use a combination of remote sensing and environmental survey data, allow for predictive spatial analyses of where human wildlife interactions are likely to occur. I used publicly reported observations of moose to create spatial predictive maps in a species distribution model framework. Slope and elevation were shown to be the strongest predictors of HWI, …

The extraction and changes to management of natural resources can have profound negative effects on local fauna, potentially causing local extirpation of many species. Fauna requiring specific habitats to thrive can be especially susceptible to disruption, such as Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), requiring advanced consideration in management practices. In this study, I studied Bald eagle preferences in roosting sites between trees and ice, and how life stage may affect roosting height within three vertical sections of the canopy at Barr Lake State Park, in Brighton, CO. I conducted stationary counts of Bald Eagles roosting on ice and in …
Effects Of Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair On Cardiac Function At Rest, Nabeel Kassam
Effects Of Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair On Cardiac Function At Rest, Nabeel Kassam
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
a. Hypothesis: We hypothesize that Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) leads to a decline in cardiac function among post-operative patients. Our primary objective is to identify the changes of cardiac function to post-TEVAR patients at rest using echocardiography studies. With this knowledge, we aim to gain valuable insight into the post-op management of patients with the goal of strategizing post-op care to reduce complications and exacerbation to heart failure.
b. Methods: Chart review of the electronic medical record (EMR) was used to collect patient data, patient history, procedural information, outcomes, and echocardiogram parameters. To assess the impact of TEVAR, the …

Evaluating The Repellent Properties Of Paprika On Ants, Jonathan J. Toj Castellanos
Evaluating The Repellent Properties Of Paprika On Ants, Jonathan J. Toj Castellanos
2024 REYES Proceedings
Ants are a problem no matter where you are, which is why we should always have a way to repel them on hand. Spices can be an eco-friendly and cheaper alternative to common insecticides sold in supermarkets. These insecticides are generally made from toxic products, which can affect both humans and animals. This research aimed to find the perfect spice to replace insecticides. Paprika was chosen because it is very common, especially in Guatemalan territory. Several experiments were conducted to verify the effects of paprika on ants. It was tested on one of the most common ant species in Central …

Investigations Into The Ant Deterrent Properties Of Asafoetida Ferula Asafoetida And Star Anise Illicium Verum, Chinmayaram K
2024 REYES Proceedings
This study assesses asafoetida and star anise as eco-friendly alternatives to chemical ant deterrents. It involved placing replicates of two bait types, a control (granulated sugar) and a treatment (granulated sugar and spice), on yellow paper substrates at five different ant-infested sites. The efficacy of the spice was evaluated by comparing the ant count on each bait every 10, 40, 60, 120, and 180 minutes. Percentage repellency (PR) was calculated for both the spices, and the data was analysed with the sign test. Further tests used only the treatment bait to evaluate the efficacy of the two varieties of asafoetida …

CONFERENCE THEME: FANTASIES OF THE MIDDLE LANDS
The idea of “middle-ness” can suggest stability—the center of an object is less likely to break than its edges. It can also suggest the opposite: something in a state of change can be said to be “in the middle”—neither one thing nor another. Mythcon 53, located in the middle of the continental U.S., welcomes an exciting range of papers, panels, and discussions exploring the concept of “middle-ness” as it is worked out in fantasy, science fiction, …

Psychology Faculty Works
Bastian et al. (2012) argued that the meat paradox—caring for animals yet eating them—creates a tension between people’s moral standards (caring for animals) and their behavior (eating them) that can be resolved via mechanisms of motivated moral disengagement. One disengagement mechanism that is thought to play a central role is the denial of food-animal minds and therefore their status as moral patients. This idea has garnered substantial interest and has framed much of the psychological approach to meat consumption. We subjected Studies 1 and 2 of Bastian et al. (2012) to high-powered direct replications and found support for the target …
Codifying Prior Informed Consent To Govern Unregistered Pesticide Export, William Snape Iii
Codifying Prior Informed Consent To Govern Unregistered Pesticide Export, William Snape Iii
PEEL Faculty Scholarship
Despite binding international law and congressional authority to the contrary, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to allow U.S. chemical manufacturers to export dangerous and unregistered pesticides to poorer countries through a regulatory loophole that must close. EPA should immediately initiate rule making to require “prior informed consent” (PIC) for the export of pesticides unregistered in the United States under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). PIC is a widely accepted legal concept defined by U.S. domestic statutes and multilateral treaties and agreements.

Factors That Influence The Prevalence Of Food Allergy In Children Born In Industrialized Countries Vs. Developing Countries: A Literature Review & Feasibility Study, Dimitri Miguel Lacson Torres
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background
Food allergy (FA) is known to be more prevalent in industrialized countries compared to developing countries. FA is a chronic disease that can cause a range of symptoms from regional urticaria to lethal anaphylaxis. FA affects 10% of the general population and is more common in children, affecting 8% of children versus 3% of adults (Seth, D. et al., 2020). It is unclear why food allergy is more common in industrialized countries versus developing countries. Research Question What are the influential factors that affect the increasing incidence of food allergy in toddlers born in industrialized countries versus those that …
