Increasing Participation Of Rural Youth In Agriculture In Iganga District, Eastern Uganda, Joseph Kayongo Jan 2024

Increasing Participation Of Rural Youth In Agriculture In Iganga District, Eastern Uganda, Joseph Kayongo

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

According to the 2024 population census, Uganda’s population is comprised of a high and increasing cohort of young people, over 70 percent of the population is below the age of thirty. Evidence reveals that youth engagement in agriculture is declining amidst rising youth unemployment. This may have implications on food security, unemployment, and underemployment and may undermine the government efforts to drive economic growth through agriculture. This capstone provides insights into the determinants of youth participation in agriculture, challenges and constraints inherent to the youth in agricultural production, in Iganga district, Eastern Uganda.

The findings reveal that young farmers are …

Determining The Applicability Of Milkfish (Chanos Chanos) For Skin Grafting Through Microbiological And Histological Evaluations, Janice A. Ragaza, Bianca Patrice Go Jan 2024

Determining The Applicability Of Milkfish (Chanos Chanos) For Skin Grafting Through Microbiological And Histological Evaluations, Janice A. Ragaza, Bianca Patrice Go

Ateneo Aquatic and Fisheries Resources Laboratory

Tilapia fish skin, rich in Type I collagen, has been shown to accelerate wound healing, reduce infection rates, and create an optimal environment for wound care. However, the potential application of other fish species, like milkfish, for skin grafting remains underexplored. Milkfish (C. chanos), an economically significant species in the Philippines, could expand the donor pool for fish skin grafting, addressing the accessibility issues in resource-limited regions where traditional graft materials may be costly or scarce. The current study investigates the feasibility of applying tilapia fish skin sterilization techniques to milkfish skin. Collected and prepared milkfish skin was …

Decoding Babel: “Ungrieved Futility” And The Unrecognized Order Of The Depression Research Field, Marty Lynn Cooper Jan 2024

Decoding Babel: “Ungrieved Futility” And The Unrecognized Order Of The Depression Research Field, Marty Lynn Cooper

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The field of depression research and theory is a preparadigmatic potpourri of different orientations without a central, consensus definition of depression. This study attempted to address these issues by investigating the depression sub-literatures (cognitive–behavioral, psychoanalytic, evolutionary, biomedical, phenomenological, existential–humanistic, cybernetic, environmental, and religious–spiritual theories) using a comparative analytic methodology, which allows for comparing disparate fields that do not share a common definitional set by relating them to a third concept, in this study the construct of “ungrieved futility” (UF) as a dynamic model of depression. UF defines the objective and/or subjective experience of the permanent loss of an …

Dreams, Synchrony, And Synchronicity, Terry Marks-Tarlow Jan 2024

Dreams, Synchrony, And Synchronicity, Terry Marks-Tarlow

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay presents the dreams of a long-term patient over the course of treatment in order to explore the transpersonal potential of the relational unconscious—those open channels of unconscious communication between people. At a key moment, the patient brings in the therapist’s own childhood dream, serving to break a period of impasse and reset the therapy. Dreams and their interpretation reveal the essence of fractal consciousness, by which a sliver of experience can shed light on the whole of the psyche. A fractal model of understanding suggests open boundaries between self/other and self/world at multiple levels. The deep intimacy of …

The Cascading Effect Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Urgency For A Trauma-Informed Approach, Whitney Lovett Jan 2024

The Cascading Effect Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Urgency For A Trauma-Informed Approach, Whitney Lovett

Integrated Studies

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to any traumatic event from birth to 18 years of age that can have negative effects to a child’s development and health. Any form of abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction constitutes an adverse childhood experience initiating immediate and long-term outcomes. Reoccurring and prolonged exposures to adversity can turn into toxic stress. These experiences take a toll on children’s brain development, growth, immune and other regulatory systems, learning, behavior, and genetic outcomes. Although ACEs are common, some populations may be more susceptible to adversities. Families who have limited economic advantages and histories of ACEs, racism, and …

Communism As An Americanism: The Curious Case Of The Red Jeffersonians, Matthew H. Hill Jan 2024

Communism As An Americanism: The Curious Case Of The Red Jeffersonians, Matthew H. Hill

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The communist movement in the United States has struggled with many issues over its long history. One of these problems is the problem of American history itself. The United States, in many ways the quintessential capitalist state, would seemingly represent the ultimate enemy for a communist. It is more than a little bizarre, then, to see the, sometimes intense, admiration that many American communists had for men like Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. While contradictory at first, this essay shows the logic behind this admiration, exploring the long history of American communism’s love affair with iconic figures of American history. …

In Vitro Phenotypes Of Pythium Isolates Are Correlated With Disease Symptoms In The Greenhouse, Kimberly Hagemann, Santiago Mideros, Harrison Hall Jan 2024

In Vitro Phenotypes Of Pythium Isolates Are Correlated With Disease Symptoms In The Greenhouse, Kimberly Hagemann, Santiago Mideros, Harrison Hall

MICRO-CCS student projects

Oomycetes are eukaryotic microbes that are pathogenic to plants and animals. Pythiaceae is a family of oomycetes that can infect a variety of hosts causing Pythium Root Rot. Phenotypic differences between isolates of the same species may indicate aggressiveness. These isolates were used in in vitro plate experiments, growth rates, and in oogonia counts. In planta these isolates were used to infect maize from line B73.

Hypotheses:

  • There is phenotypic diversity across different isolates of oomycetes within the same species when grown on different media.
  • Some phenotypes are correlated with increased disease severity or aggressiveness in maize.

Silent Films And Augmented Reality, Matthew Lewis Jan 2024

Silent Films And Augmented Reality, Matthew Lewis

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This paper discusses a project involving the translation of individual silent movie frames into three-dimensional virtual environments that can be viewed using augmented reality technology. The specific frames that were used were shot in one block of a neighborhood in Fort Lee, New Jersey, that was popular for filmmaking in the first decades of the twentieth century. After a brief overview of the project, several core technologies and concepts involved will be introduced, along with a short survey of prior related work to provide some background. The project’s origins, motivations, and context will be discussed. Next, implementation of the augmented …

Silent Era Motion Picture Camera Operators, Marsha Gordon, Buckey Grimm Jan 2024

Silent Era Motion Picture Camera Operators, Marsha Gordon, Buckey Grimm

The Journal of e-Media Studies

Although the most significant role in the early years of motion picture production was undoubtedly that of the camera operator, there is relatively little known about the people who performed this job during cinema’s silent era. The development of the fledgling motion picture business relied almost entirely on the technological and aesthetic advancements involved in capturing moving images, and much of the credit for these advancements can be attributed to the camera operators themselves who often functioned as roving inventors, photographers, technicians, and directors simultaneously. What follows draws on a decade of research into the men and women who operated …

Two Ways Of Memory: The Signal Corps And Cbs World War I Motion Picture Collections At The National Archives, Bret Vukoder

The Journal of e-Media Studies

In 2014, upon the centennial of the outbreak of World War I, the National Archives initiated a systematic effort to restore and reorganize two major motion picture collections capturing the tumultuous era. The 111-H series, which holds 470 titles created by the Army Signal Corps and offers extremely detailed corresponding metadata, reflects a key goal of the unit—to create a vast and unflinching historical account for posterity. Alternatively, the 660 titles of the CBS-WWI collection, gathered a half century after the war from 26 international film archives to make CBS’s 1964 World War One television program, signify an attempt to …

Photographs In Films Starring Ruan Lingyu: Considering Geometric Regions Of The Motion Picture Frame, Panpan Yang Jan 2024

Photographs In Films Starring Ruan Lingyu: Considering Geometric Regions Of The Motion Picture Frame, Panpan Yang

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This multimodal essay utilizes the Semantic Annotation Tool (SAT), an open-source drop-in module, to create samples of time-based annotations for still photographs in Chinese films starring Ruan Lingyu.1 Exemplary films include Love and Duty (Lian’ai yu yiwu; 1931), The Peach Girl (Taohua qixue ji; 1931), and The New Women (Xin nüxing; completed in 1934, released in 1935), all produced by the United China (Lianhua) studio. It shows that the photograph is a motif across the three films, an object that oscillates between the screen world and the social world and a device that makes the viewer pensive. As an experimental …

Early Cinema And The Historiographic Impulse: Scholarly Positionality Then And Now, Charles Musser Jan 2024

Early Cinema And The Historiographic Impulse: Scholarly Positionality Then And Now, Charles Musser

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This free-form essay reflects on the historiography of early cinema from W. K. L. Dickson’s early accounts to the 1978 Brighton FIAF Conference on Cinema 1900-1906, which brought together young scholars and veteran archivist in a congenial, collaborative setting. It examines the contemporary moment in which its study has been expanded and institutionalized within academia, characterized by numerous biennial conferences and yearly gatherings such as the Giornate del Cinema Muto. Tied to this are debates about the relationship of broad historiographic characterizations to sustained, in-depth research. Historians continue to disagree about the rise and dominance of story films, and this …

Finding One American Beauty: Deyo And Deyo (1897), Dan Streible Jan 2024

Finding One American Beauty: Deyo And Deyo (1897), Dan Streible

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This analysis of two idiosyncratic works of early cinema considers the materiality of the forms each took, from creation through their restorations in the twenty-first century. Researching the well-known Three American Beauties (Edison, 1906) and the seldom-seen dance film Deyo (American Mutoscope Co., 1897) requires archival investigation and an understanding that the primary, secondary, and reference sources film historians rely upon sometimes contain erroneous reports, contradictory evidence, and misleading metadata. Deyo was shot on high-resolution film, but seen only on Mutoscope machines by a few people. It survives as fragments of 68mm paper rolls, which American Mutoscope and Biograph deposited …

New Windows On The World, Ian Christie Jan 2024

New Windows On The World, Ian Christie

The Journal of e-Media Studies

Over a century ago, moving pictures opened new ways of seeing and experiencing the world for audiences. In 1900 watching lifelike images from near and far in a darkened space was a new experience, and one that quickly attracted audiences everywhere. For those not living in crowded cities, movies offered a taste of city life. And for those far from centers of innovation, they brought modernity and new styles of life. They also created a new kind of encyclopedia, displaying wonders of nature and science for the masses. And they created new kinds of glamour in the images of stars …

Human Neural Stem Cell Transplantation Improves Cognition In A Murine Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Loan Quynh Tran Jan 2024

Human Neural Stem Cell Transplantation Improves Cognition In A Murine Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Loan Quynh Tran

VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals

This paper explores the potential of stem cell transplantation as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer’s. While previous clinical trials, including those for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, have demonstrated the safety of cellular therapies, identifying effective stem cell lines is crucial for advancing similar trials in Alzheimer’s. Using the APP/PS1 mouse model the study presents a pre-clinical proof-of-concept where human neural stem cells were transplanted into the fimbria fornix. Results showed significant cognitive improvements in hippocampal-dependent memory tasks at both 4 & 6 weeks post-transplantation. Interestingly, while the levels of synapse-associated proteins and cholinergic neurons remained unchanged, there was a …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Theory suggests that animals make hierarchical, multiscale resource selection decisions to address the hierarchy of factors limiting their fitness. Ecologists have developed tools to link population-level resource selection across scales; yet, theoretical expectations about the relationship between coarse-and fine-scale selection decisions at the individual level remain elusive despite their importance to fitness. With GPS-telemetry data collected across California, USA, we evaluated resource selection of mountain lions (Puma concolor; n = 244) relative to spatial variation in human-caused mortality risk. With hierarchical resource selection, coarse-scale selection determines availability at finer scales. This simple relationship allowed us to demonstrate that …
