Contribution Of The Medial Entorhinal Cortex To Performance On The Traveling Salesperson Problem In Rats, Jena B. Hales Phd, Larissa Olivas, Daniela Abouchedid, Rachel E. Blaser

Neuroscience, Cognition and Behavior: Faculty Scholarship

In order to successfully navigate through space, animals must rely on multiple cognitive processes, including orientation in space, memory of object locations, and navigational decisions based on that information. Although highly-controlled behavioral tasks are valuable for isolating and targeting specific processes, they risk producing a narrow understanding of complex behavior in natural contexts. The Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) is an optimization problem that can be used to study naturalistic foraging behaviors, in which subjects select routes between multiple baited targets. Foraging is a spontaneous, yet complex, behavior, involving decision-making, attention, course planning, and memory. Previous research found that …

Design And Building Of A Customizable, Single-Objective, Light-Sheet Fluorescence Microscope For The Visualization Of Cytoskeleton Networks, Nathan Felcher, Daisy H. Achiriloaie, Brian Lee, Ryan Mcgorty Phd, Janet Sheung

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

Reconstituted cytoskeleton composites have emerged as a valuable model system for studying non-equilibrium soft matter. The faithful capture of the dynamics of these 3D, dense networks calls for optical sectioning, which is often associated with fluorescence confocal microscopes. However, recent developments in light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) have established it as a cost-effective and, at times, superior alternative. To make LSFM accessible to cytoskeleton researchers less familiar with optics, we present a step-by-step beginner's guide to building a versatile light-sheet fluorescence microscope from off-the-shelf components. To enable sample mounting with traditional slide samples, this LSFM follows the single-objective light-sheet (SOLS) design, …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Primate evolution has led to a remarkable diversity of behavioral specializations and pronounced brain size variation among species (Barton, 2012; DeCasien and Higham, 2019; Powell et al., 2017). Gene expression provides a promising opportunity for studying the molecular basis of brain evolution, but it has been explored in very few primate species to date (e.g. Khaitovich et al., 2005; Khrameeva et al., 2020; Ma et al., 2022; Somel et al., 2009). To understand the landscape of gene expression evolution across the primate lineage, we generated and analyzed RNA-seq data from four brain regions in an unprecedented eighteen species. Here, we …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The Retinoic acid-Inducible Gene I (RIG-I) like receptors (RLRs) are the major viral RNA sensors essential for the initiation of antiviral immune responses. RLRs are subjected to stringent transcriptional and posttranslational regulations, of which ubiquitination is one of the most important. However, the role of ubiquitination in RLR transcription is unknown. Here, we screen 375 definite ubiquitin ligase knockout cell lines and identify Ubiquitin Protein Ligase E3 Component N-Recognin 5 (UBR5) as a positive regulator of RLR transcription. UBR5 deficiency reduces antiviral immune responses to RNA viruses, while increases viral replication in primary cells and mice. Ubr5 knockout mice are …

Behavioral Effects Of Novel Treatments For Pain Using Different Pathways, Danya M I Aldaghma Jan 2024

Behavioral Effects Of Novel Treatments For Pain Using Different Pathways, Danya M I Aldaghma

Theses and Dissertations

Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensation that is mostly caused by a stimulus from our surroundings. This sensation has the potential to become a significant concern, disrupting daily activities, and diminishing overall quality of life. However, it could also hold significant importance as it serves as a protective mechanism. Pain acts as an alarm system for the human body, alerting it to potentially harmful situations where tissues may be at risk of damage1. Despite the considerable advancements in pain treatment and the extensive knowledge scientists possess regarding the pathophysiology and pathways of pain, numerous medications aimed at alleviating pain …

Auto-Combustion Synthesis Of Lanthanum-Doped Tio2 Nanostructures For Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation Of Crystal Violet Dye, Gharieb Meselhy, Mostafa Yasine Nassar, Ibrahim Mohamed Nassar, Sabry Hamed Seda

Dentistry

Utilising the solution combustion technique, nanocrystalline photocatalysts that included both pristine TiO2 and doped TiO2 with various La (III) dopant percentages (1, 3, 5, and 7 mol%) were created. Different methods, including thermal analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), were used to investigate the prepared nanostructures. The XRD results indicated the anatase form and the crystalline nature of the products (pristine and doped TiO2) in the size range of a crystallite (5–16.5) nm. The photocatalytic assessment of the prepared nano-photocatalysts was carried out by …

Habitat Characterization Of American Badgers (Taxidea Taxus) Of Northern California, Mitchell Victoria Jan 2024

Habitat Characterization Of American Badgers (Taxidea Taxus) Of Northern California, Mitchell Victoria

Master's Theses

American badgers (Taxidea taxus) are a semi fossorial mammal that lives in grassland and open prairie ecosystems as well as coastal prairies, agricultural fields, deserts, and deforested habitats. Many researchers have published work on badgers, but we still require more information on their ecology. The American badger is a semi fossorial, solitary, predatory mammal of grassland ecosystems. They are classified as mesopredators when compared to larger apex predators such as brown bears, wolves, and pumas. However, when larger carnivores are absent, Badgers become apex predators of their ecosystems. Los Vaqueros Watershed in Brentwood, California, was my study site because badgers …

Stimulating the innate immune system has been explored as a therapeutic option for the treatment of gliomas. Inactivating mutations in ATRX, defining molecular alterations in IDH-mutant astrocytomas, have been implicated in dysfunctional immune signaling. However, little is known about the interplay between ATRX loss and IDH mutation on innate immunity. To explore this, we generated ATRX-deficient glioma models in the presence and absence of the IDH1R132H mutation. ATRX-deficient glioma cells are sensitive to dsRNA-based innate immune agonism and exhibit impaired lethality and increased T-cell infiltration in vivo. However, the presence of IDH1R132H dampens baseline expression of key innate immune genes …

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback As A Treatment For Military Ptsd: A Meta-Analysis, Jordan Kenemore, Grant Benham, Ruby Charak, Juventino Hernandez Rodriguez

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Introduction: Emerging research has provided tentative support for the use of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as a treatment for several psychological disorders, with meta-analyses providing compelling evidence for HRVB as a promising treatment for anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Given the prevalence of PTSD in military veterans and the comparatively lower benefit and higher attrition rate of traditional psychological treatment for PTSD relative to civilian counterparts, it is important to examine complementary and alternative treatment approaches such as HRVB in this population. Although studies of HRVB for PTSD have been conducted with military veterans, they have involved relatively small sample …
