Desmoid Tumors: Current Perspective And Treatment, Ankit Mangla, Gary Schwartz Jan 2024

Desmoid Tumors: Current Perspective And Treatment, Ankit Mangla, Gary Schwartz

Faculty Scholarship

Desmoid tumors are rare tumors with a tendency to infiltrate locally. The lack of a standard treatment approach makes choosing the most appropriate treatment for patients challenging. Most experts recommend watchful observation for asymptomatic patients as spontaneous regression of tumor is observed in up to 20% of patients. Upfront resection of the desmoid tumor has fallen out of favor due to high morbidity and high relapse rates associated with the tumor. Systemic therapy has evolved over several decades. Where chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were used over the last several decades, tyrosine kinase inhibitors came to the forefront …

Unveiling Efficiency: Investigating Distance Measures In Wastewater Treatment Using Interval-Valued Neutrosophic Fuzzy Soft Set, Muhammad Saeed, Kinza Kareem, Fatima Razzaq, Muhammad Saqlain

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

To reduce the threats that wastewater poses to human health and the environment, water treatment techniques must be improved. The use of a procedure that includes preparation, testing, primary and secondary treatments, filtration, disinfection, and continuous monitoring is therefore required. The objective of this research is to create a hybrid notion that extends the idea of an interval-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft set (IVNFSS) to an interval-valued neutrosophic fuzzy set. Operations like complement, union, and integration are included in the idea. To improve decision-making accuracy, a quality-assessment distance measure is incorporated, offering a numerical representation of the disparity between various factors. …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

We examined YAP1/TAZ-TEAD signaling pathway activity at neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of skeletal muscle fibers in adult mice. Our investigations revealed that muscle-specific knockouts of Yap1 or Taz, or both, demonstrate that these transcriptional coactivators regulate synaptic gene expression, the number and morphology of NMJs, and synaptic nuclei. Yap1 or Taz single knockout mice display reduced grip strength, fragmentation of NMJs, and accumulation of synaptic nuclei. Yap1/Taz muscle-specific double knockout mice do not survive beyond birth and possess almost no NMJs, the few detectable show severely impaired morphology and are organized in widened endplate bands; and with motor nerve endings being …

Grazing Management For Alfalfa Persistence And Productivity In Warm-Climate Regions, D. Basigalup Jan 2024

Grazing Management For Alfalfa Persistence And Productivity In Warm-Climate Regions, D. Basigalup

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Alfalfa is the most important cultivated forage crop in Argentina, where about 3 million hectares are grown. Even though the use of direct grazing is coming down during the last 15 years, it is still important for both beef and dairy production. Alfalfa grazing can play an important role in reducing operative costs and decreasing quality loss due to forage conservation (hay or silage). In this paper, the main concepts necessary to implement adequate and practical rotational grazing systems are briefly discussed. Particular attention is given to issues such as grazing frequency, grazing period, pasture use efficiency, and alfalfa quality …

With the aim to characterize six lucerne landraces (Medicago sativa L.), representing a sample of a collection from central Italy, sixty individuals per landrace were evaluated by screening for RAPD markers with three lucerne-specific primers. Twenty-one amplification products were scored as present or absent across all plants. The dendrogram from mean genetic similarity estimates displayed Casalina alone and the other landraces clustered into one distinct group, showing a single branch point with more than 73% of genetic similarity. The discriminant analysis grouped the landraces in a similar manner. The first function maximally separated the group Grosseto, Gubbio and C. …

Amphicarpic Legumes For Tropical Pasture Persistence, R Schultze-Kraft, A Schmidt, H Hohn Jan 2024

Amphicarpic Legumes For Tropical Pasture Persistence, R Schultze-Kraft, A Schmidt, H Hohn

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Amphicarpy, by which a plant produces underground seeds in addition to aerial fruits, is found in many plant families and in species of at least 15 legume genera. First studies on the tropical Centrosema rotundifolium and subtropical Macroptilium panduratum revealed for both species, besides their stoloniferous growth habit, two important mechanisms for survival under unfavorable conditions: (1) Underground meristems and reserve organs, and (2) regeneration from a soil seed reserve based on underground, aerial-flowering independent, seed production. Underground seed production was for both species particularly high on very sandy soils, but amphicarpy enables the plants to exhibit a plasticity response …

A Coupled Model Of Population, Poaching, And Economic Dynamics To Assess Rhino Conservation Through Legal Trade, Henry Doyle, Kylie Champagne, Ditto Rajpal, Grace Seebeck, David J. Gerberry Jan 2024

A Coupled Model Of Population, Poaching, And Economic Dynamics To Assess Rhino Conservation Through Legal Trade, Henry Doyle, Kylie Champagne, Ditto Rajpal, Grace Seebeck, David J. Gerberry

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Rhinoceros populations in Africa are in peril largely due to the high value of their horns and the poaching that ensues. The strategy of legalizing the international trade of rhino horn is receiving increased support among both the people and government officials in Africa. Many in the international conservation community remain opposed to the idea. The legalization strategy is straightforward in theory: legalizing the trade of rhino horn will introduce a large quantity of horn to the market, the increased supply will lead to lower prices for rhino horn, and lower prices will reduce the overall poaching pressure these animals …

Improving The Usability Of Archaeological Data Through Written Guidelines, Anne Austin, Ixchel M. Faniel, Brittany Brannon, Sarah Whitcher Kansa

History Faculty Works

Archaeologists frequently use written guidelines such as site manuals, recording forms, and digital prompts during excavations to create usable data within and across projects. Most written guidelines emphasize creating either standardized datasets or narrative summaries; however, previous research has demonstrated that the resulting datasets are often difficult to (re)use. Our study analyzed observations and interviews conducted with four archaeological excavation teams, as well as interviews with archaeological data reusers, to evaluate how archaeologists use and implement written guidelines. These excavation team and reuser experiences suggest that archaeologists need more specific best practices to create and implement written guidelines that improve …

Dynamics Of Post-Mating Responses In Drosophila, Gagneet Kaur Jan 2024

Dynamics Of Post-Mating Responses In Drosophila, Gagneet Kaur

Theses - ALL

Mating induces crucial changes in Drosophila females, influencing vital aspects of behavior and physiology essential for reproductive success. These changes primarily result from gene expression shifts in the female reproductive tract. DNA sequencing and bioinformatics advances have deepened our understanding of postmating responses in Drosophila at the transcriptional level. However, the majority of these studies are confined to D. melanogaster, lack tissue-specific investigations, and are extensively focused on the composition of the ejaculate and the role of male reproductive proteins transferred during mating. This study delves into the dynamic lower reproductive tract of D. virilis subgroup species, exploring the postmating …

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Signaling Mechanisms That Regulate Learning And Memory In Rats, Clementine Faye Harvey Jan 2024

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Signaling Mechanisms That Regulate Learning And Memory In Rats, Clementine Faye Harvey

Theses - ALL

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a widespread neurotrophin implicated in cellular processes underlying memory, socialization, and emotion; however, little is known about how genetic modification of BDNF interacts with BDNF modulators (e.g., hormones) to regulate BDNF-TrkB signaling. BDNF binds to the TrkB receptor and triggers signaling cascades underlying neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Inhibitory phosphorylation of one downstream target of the BDNF cascade - GSK3β – is also linked to memory improvements. The Val66Met allele – a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the Bdnf gene - produces impairments in regulated BDNF release from the cell, as well as deficits in spatial …

Valent Experience: On Its Non-Sensory Nature, Its Unity, And Its Place In Value Theory, Lorenza D'Angelo Jan 2024

Valent Experience: On Its Non-Sensory Nature, Its Unity, And Its Place In Value Theory, Lorenza D'Angelo

Dissertations - ALL

My dissertation is about the nature and value of those conscious experiences which feel good or bad to us, and which I call ‘valent’ experiences. When an experience is positively valent, I call it ‘pleasure’; when it is negatively valent, I call it ‘pain’. The dissertation consists of three chapters; they are interrelated, but they can also be read as independent papers. In the first chapter, I discuss emotional experience and its relation to sensory experience. First, I draw on Plato to set some conditions on what counts as sensory experience. Then, I present two arguments against the claim that …

The Role Of Stressors In The Behavioral Responses Of Lesser Sirens To Chemical Cues, Mackenzie Hanna Nichols Jan 2024

The Role Of Stressors In The Behavioral Responses Of Lesser Sirens To Chemical Cues, Mackenzie Hanna Nichols

Student Theses and Dissertations

Organisms must make choices to improve their survival, and often perform behaviors in response to stimuli in the environment. I examined behavioral responses under conditions of stress in a species of fully aquatic salamander, Western Lesser Sirens (Siren intermedia nettingi Goin 1942). First, I presented individuals with chemical cues from a variety of known prey items to determine a potential prey preference. Sirens did not exhibit a preference by prey type. I then exposed individuals to chemical cues from prey, predator, and insecticide sources and evaluated behavioral responses, while also administering a nonlethal physical injury to a subset of subjects …

Critical Race Theory Bans And The Changing Canon: Cultural Appropriation In Narrative, Susan Ayres Jan 2024

Critical Race Theory Bans And The Changing Canon: Cultural Appropriation In Narrative, Susan Ayres

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Thirty-five states have enacted critical race theory (CRT) bans at the level of elementary and secondary public education, and eleven states have extended these to the university level. One way to resist these attempts to repress a healthy democracy by whitewashing history is through a pedagogy of anti-racism, including literary works. The question of what that would look like involves questions of cultural appropriation, which occurs when one takes from another culture, such as a writer creating a narrative about a character outside of the writer’s cultural identity. This Article considers the story of Ota Benga, brought from the Congo …

While immune checkpoint inhibitors have evolved into the standard of care for advanced melanoma, 40–50% of melanoma cases progress while on therapies. The relationship between bacterium and carcinogenesis is well founded, such as in H. pylori in gastric cancers, and Fusobacterium in colorectal cancers. This interplay between dysbiosis and carcinogenesis questions whether changes in the microbiome could affect treatment. Thus, FMT may find utility in modifying the efficacy of anti-PD-1. This review aims to examine the use of FMT in treatment-resistant melanoma. A literature search was performed using the keywords “fecal microbiota transplant” and “skin cancer”. Studies were reviewed for …

Determining Best Diet And Temperature Regime Of Monkeyface Pricklebacks (Cebidichthys Violaceus) For Aquaculture, Luke C. Townsend Jan 2024

Determining Best Diet And Temperature Regime Of Monkeyface Pricklebacks (Cebidichthys Violaceus) For Aquaculture, Luke C. Townsend

Master's Theses

Wild freshwater eel populations are threatened due to overfishing and habitat degradation. Attempts to use aquaculture to close the eel life cycle have yet to be commercially adapted, owing largely to their complex lifecycle. Monkeyface pricklebacks (Cebidichthys violaceus) are intertidal fish that may serve as an alternative species for freshwater eels in aquaculture, as they possess several beneficial characteristics. This study aimed to optimize diet and culture temperatures to maximize monkeyface prickleback cultures by measuring growth, condition, metabolic rates, fillet composition, and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of juvenile fish that were reared in two separate experiments: (1) on four different …
