The use of antitrust in the context of food is problematic because it so clearly violates the Consumer Welfare Standard as prescribed by the courts. Ultimately, antitrust rhetoric promoting ad nauseam enforcement will not improve consumer welfare. Advancing consumer welfare in the food industry must mean prioritizing lower food prices over some arbitrary threshold of market competition or protecting small farms. Courts can and should begin distinguishing these goals immediately.

In 2021, we started an initiative to sample the ants of Kentucky called the Kentucky Ant Project (KYAP). As part of our efforts to sample ants in the state, we need to be able to identify them! Usually, this is done by examining the morphology of ant specimens, but it's incredibly difficult, or impossible to identify some ants with current morphological identification resources. To remedy this, we decided to develop a genetic protocol to assist in identifying these ants.
One such problematic ant to identify with morphology is Forelius, which is a genus of generalist foraging species. When we gave …

An Analysis Of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring", Canaan Thacker, Jared Vise, Caleb Hammond, Douglas S. Mock
2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Rachel Carson's 1962 publication of "Silent Spring" is often cited as one of the most influential pieces of media in American environmental legislation. Carson, who spent the majority of her career working for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, was inspired to write "Silent Spring" due to a heightened level of environmental concern regarding modem agricultural practices. The issue at hand was America's increasing reliance on chemical pesticides, with Carson specifically targeting dichlorodiphenyl- dichloroethane (DDT) as among the worst defenders. These chemicals weaken natural defenses and wreak havoc upon wildlife populations. Carson's publication and its willingness to openly share …

Since the spring of 2022, the MSU sheep flock has been an Innovation Flock for the Sheep GEMS project, managed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The GEMS project is a multibreed, national project evaluating longevity of ewes within flocks. Our part as a participant in the project involves collecting and sending raw data which is compiled into 1 very large data set. The research discussed here uses our preliminary data from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 lambing seasons collected from our Katahdin ewes (n =46; 1-5 years of age). Collected data included fecal egg count (FEC), body condition scoring (BCS), …

How To Train Your Opossum: Captive Virginia Opossum (Didelphis Virginiana) Responds To The Color Red After Positive Reinforcement Training, Leann Trout
Oral Presentations
Positive reinforcement is an animal training method in which a reward (reinforcer) is used to get an animal to perform a desired action given by a trainer. It is helpful for captive animal management, especially for providing medical care or getting an animal to stop an unwanted behavior without use of punishment. My research project aimed to determine if a food-based reinforcer would motivate a captive female Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) to complete a task before and after positive reinforcement. I first trained the opossum to associate the color red with the reinforcer by presenting a piece of cheese to …
Prevalence Of Ticks And Tick-Borne Pathogens In Mined Land Areas Of Southeast Kansas, Brayden Letterman
Prevalence Of Ticks And Tick-Borne Pathogens In Mined Land Areas Of Southeast Kansas, Brayden Letterman
Oral Presentations
Ticks serve as vectors for many disease-causing pathogens, particularly bacterial and rickettsial pathogens. Diseases such as Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rickettsiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Tularemia can result after bitten by ticks. These tick-borne diseases are more common in the Great Plains region than is recognized. The present study aimed to conduct a three-year long surveillance on various tick species in the mined land area in Cherokee County (KS) using dry ice bait as well as flag-drag technique. Over several visits (June 2020 – Aug 2022) to the collection site, ticks were collected using both trapping methods. Detailed environmental data …
Tick And Tick-Borne Pathogen Surveillance As A Public Health Tool Updating Kansas Geographic Distribution Map, Erik Jantz
Posters
Ticks transmit a wide variety of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminths to vertebrates. Their life cycle depends on blood meals from various hosts as well as environmental conditions such as the temperature and habitat type. With climatic changes, the expansion of tick habitat creates a need for annual surveillance of ticks and periodic update of geographic distribution maps. The present study conducted tick surveillance using flag-drag technique in both Crawford County and Anderson County, Kansas as well as ticks collected from a veterinary clinic in Crawford Co. during March-August 2023. Locations surveyed in Crawford Co. were a mined …

Manyfishes 1: A Standardized Test Of Inhibitory Control In Fishes Using Big Team Science, Shane Rance

Although fish behavior research has a reasonably long history, the past decade has seen a dramatic increase in the number of studies on fish cognition. Yet, there exist important limitations to our assessment of fish cognition that can lead to replicability issues, including the use of small sample sizes, nonrepresentative samples, and unstandardized protocols. Recently, several Big Team Science initiatives have begun to address this problem in various taxa (e.g., ManyBabies, ManyPrimates, ManyBirds, ManyDogs). In the same spirit as its predecessors, ManyFishes uses an approach based on large-scale collaboration across researchers and institutions in an attempt to increase both the …
Introduction Of A Novel Food Resource And Obstacle Are Promising Enrichment Tools For The Captive Prairie Kingsnake (Lampropeltis Calligaster), Renee Trout
Oral Presentations
Enrichment, such as introducing obstacles or novel foods, enhances captive animals' quality of life by providing a stimulating environment the animal may not otherwise experience in a captive setting. We sought to determine if the introduction of a new food source (i.e., day old chicks) and a maze (i.e., plastic tube) would serve as good enrichment tools for a captive prairie kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster). Our hypotheses were that the kingsnake would preferentially consume the novel food source and choose to interact with the maze. In two trials 14 days apart, we introduced one novel food item and its current food …

Does Behavior Evolve First? Correlated Responses To Selection For Voluntary Wheel-Running Behavior In House Mice, Rahim H. Khan, Justin S. Rhodes, Isabelle A. Girard, Nicole E. Schwartz, Theodore Garland Jr.
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
How traits at multiple levels of biological organization evolve in a correlated fashion in response to directional selection is poorly understood, but two popular models are the very general “behavior evolves first” (BEF) hypothesis and the more specific “morphology-performance-behavior-fitness” (MPBF) paradigm. Both acknowledge that selection often acts relatively directly on behavior and that when behavior evolves, other traits will as well but most with some lag. However, this proposition is exceedingly difficult to test in nature. Therefore, we studied correlated responses in the high-runner (HR) mouse selection experiment, in which four replicate lines have been bred for voluntary wheel-running behavior …

Trauma Is A Wound: Demonstrating The Use Of Character Analysis To Practice Clinical Analysis, Madisyn Beare
Honors Projects
Evidence-based treatments of trauma require clinicians to base their treatments on the client’s specific and individual needs, experiences, cognitions, and place in recovery. Essentially, each new client is a new and unique case, and the practice of understanding how trauma may affect an individual only comes from clinical exposure.Literature provides the public with somewhat of an aid in these circumstances: fictional characters are not real people, and therefore can undergo limitless character analyses. Analyzing a fictional character allows clinicians the ability to practice their exploration of various behavioral indicators of mental health concerns while honoring the ethical code of non-maleficence, …
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
Masters Theses
For the past 50 years, many studies have examined the effects of Spiritual Care in medical environments. Though these studies have helped support the legitimacy and necessity for the presence of spiritual care in medicine, a lack of attention has been given to the level of professionalism of those who have been granted permission to administer care. The objective of my thesis is to determine the following: 1) if medical organizations that utilize volunteer-only spiritual care programs for their patients, and families, provide the same level of care as ones staffed by trained professionals, 2) if volunteer-only chaplaincy programs generate …

Writing has been not only my source of income, but also an avenue to display my own thoughts through the words of others for the past four decades. Being able to incorporate my own personality across the genres in written form has given me, and many readers, an expanded knowledge and enjoyment. While it is well known that writing has physical and mental health benefits, quite often writers don’t realize how much of themselves is poured into their work. This theory was especially true for me during the COVID years, when I worked, mostly alone, as the City Clerk for …

“Alas Poor Ireland!”: British Prejudice, “The Irish Precedent, ” And The Origins Of The American Revolution, David Arthur Salzillo, Jr.
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Of all the claims in the Declaration of Independence, its surety about the existence of an intentional British “design to reduce” the colonists “under absolute Despotism” is perhaps the most questionable one to modern ears. Contemporary historians have largely dismissed such language, and the accompanying concerns about an alleged British plot to “enslave” its Atlantic possessions. However, this paper argues that such a view fails to properly consider the role of “the Irish precedent” of English imperial exploitation in sparking American resistance and rebellion. Namely, through a careful study of what American colonists read and wrote about in the …
Environmental Factors Associated With Triploid Aspen Occurrence In Intermountain West Landscapes, Karen E. Mock, James A. Walton
Environmental Factors Associated With Triploid Aspen Occurrence In Intermountain West Landscapes, Karen E. Mock, James A. Walton
Browse all Datasets
Polyploidy is common among plants and can contribute to physiological and morphological differences, altering how plants respond to environmental changes, promoting genetic diversification, and even species radiation. Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), a keystone species associated with high plant and animal diversity is frequently found in mixed diploid/triploid populations in the Intermountain West. High mortality rates and widespread population declines in aspen are of increasing concern in the Intermountain West, often ascribed to changing climates and drought stress events. The goal of this study was to better understand environmental factors influencing the distribution of triploid aspen population in the Intermountain West. …
