Recognizing Traps And Frightening Wolves: Foxes And Lions As A Representative Of Machiavellian Political Ideology In Shakespeare’S Comedies, Grace A. Powell Apr 2024

Recognizing Traps And Frightening Wolves: Foxes And Lions As A Representative Of Machiavellian Political Ideology In Shakespeare’S Comedies, Grace A. Powell

Student Scholar Showcase

While William Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets have been discussed time and time again over the past few centuries, one topic that has been less traversed is the connection between his Comedies and Niccolò Machiavelli’s political ideologies. This project will explore references of lions and foxes in Shakespeare’s Comedies and the leaders and monarchs within them to determine how beliefs about Machiavelli’s political ideology influenced Shakespeare’s literature and became symbols for leadership and power. This project will be important for gaining historical context on Machiavellian political discourse and how it was represented in the contemporary dramatic literature of William Shakespeare. I …

Mocra And The New Cosmetics Gmps, Brandi Reinbold Apr 2024

Mocra And The New Cosmetics Gmps, Brandi Reinbold

Oxford ICSB

The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) enacted by Congress December 29th, 2022, includes provisions for the FDA to publish proposed Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations by the end of 2024 and a final rule by the end of 2025. In this talk we will explore what the language of MoCRA tells us about what GMPs are likely to be promulgated with a focus on GMPs related to ingredient and finished product identity and purity. MoCRA exempts small cosmetics manufacturers from GMP compliance requirements and directs FDA to “take it easy” on other not-quite-so-small manufacturers. Despite these exemptions, most cosmetics …

Investigation Of New Pathological Markers In Cadaveric Nervous Tissue, Richard Tuttle Apr 2024

Investigation Of New Pathological Markers In Cadaveric Nervous Tissue, Richard Tuttle

Liberty University Research Week

Anatomical and physiological study of the human body extends beyond the life of an individual, giving us a perspective of the post-mortem period with cadaveric studies. Cadavers serve as a valuable resource by providing tangible access into the intricacies of human anatomy, normal physiology, and how various pathologies affect their implicated tissues, structures, and functions. Numerous techniques allow researchers to identify the effects of pathologies within different organ systems. Among these systems, our current interest involves central nervous system pathologies. Due to their complexity, neurodegenerative diseases typically require multiple studies and characterization to be understood and to distinguish them from …

Challenges Of A Changing Environment: Urban Development Impacts A Population Of Eastern Box Turtles, Anna Grace Aldridge Apr 2024

Challenges Of A Changing Environment: Urban Development Impacts A Population Of Eastern Box Turtles, Anna Grace Aldridge

Liberty University Research Week

The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a small terrestrial turtle, which lives primarily in open woodlands. Populations of these turtles can be threatened if drastic changes happen to their woodland environment, such as development projects. This is exactly what happened to a small population of eastern box turtles along the Blackwater Creek trail in downtown Lynchburg, VA. We have been researching this population since 1999 using a capture-mark-recapture method. The population was undisturbed until 2020 when a large portion of the study site was timbered for urban development, reducing the size of the forest habitat from 11 to …

Formalin-Induced Neuropathic Pain In Mice, Melissa Gerald Apr 2024

Formalin-Induced Neuropathic Pain In Mice, Melissa Gerald

Liberty University Research Week

Neuropathic pain is a chronic pathology of the nervous system (Finnerup et al., 2021), often related to inflammatory conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) (Ubogu, 2015). In vitro and vivo studies have investigated the role of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other inflammatory mediators within the spinal cord (SC) for the development and persistence of neuropathic pain (Tsuda, 2017; Gwak, 2012). In vivo studies have established a formalin-induced pain model in rats to be comparable to spinal nerve ligation (SNL) and induce persistent spinal inflammation (Salinas-Abarca, 2017). It remains unknown whether a formalin-induced pain model can induce neuropathic …

Cholesterol-Fluorophore Bioconjugates, Emily Bayliss Apr 2024

Cholesterol-Fluorophore Bioconjugates, Emily Bayliss

Liberty University Research Week

This experiment focuses on attaching a cholesterol group to the fluorophore, 9,10-anthracenedione. Cholesterol is a structural component of cell membranes, and its lipophilic properties allow it to pass through the phospholipid bilayer.1 Anthraquinones are a class of compounds obtained from natural sources such as fungi, plants, animals, and bacteria and represent the second most important class of dyes. Anthraquinone dyes are composed of 9,10-anthraquinones and can be modified at various positions.2 This reaction uses a cholesterol derivative which has been used as a lipid anchor for hydrophobization of other fluorophores.3 Cholesterol-fluorophore conjugates have been used to examine the functions of …

Using Taxonomic And Hybridization Data To Identify Lungless Salamander Kinds, Kayla Natelborg, Adelyn C. Fairley, Timothy R. Brophy Apr 2024

Using Taxonomic And Hybridization Data To Identify Lungless Salamander Kinds, Kayla Natelborg, Adelyn C. Fairley, Timothy R. Brophy

Liberty University Research Week

Baraminology is the study of God’s created kinds as described in Genesis 1. Holobaramins (groups of known organisms sharing continuity and bounded by discontinuity) are scientific approximations of these kinds identified by building up monobaramins (smaller, continuous groups) and dividing apobaramins (larger, discontinuous groups). The lungless salamanders (Caudata: Plethodontidae), composed of over 500 species in 29 genera, have been grouped together by herpetologists for almost 200 years. This consistent taxonomic history suggests that the family represents a cognitum (group of organisms recognized through the human cognitive senses as belonging together) and possibly apobaramin. The goals of the present study are …

Influence Of Scp1 On Cryptococcus Neoformans Virulence, Carleigh Warsing Apr 2024

Influence Of Scp1 On Cryptococcus Neoformans Virulence, Carleigh Warsing

Liberty University Research Week

Cryptococcus neoformans is the highest ranked pathogen on the Fungal Priority Pathogen List (WHO). Cryptococcal disease begins as pneumonia, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and develops into meningoencephalitis with a 41-61% mortality rate. While most commonly contracted by immunocompromised individuals, infections in immunocompetent individuals do occur. Treatments often produce severe side effects and increased resistance is a developing concern. Our research aims to identify a gene that can be targeted for more effective antifungal therapies. The SCP1 gene is involved in pH regulation and virulence in C. neoformans. Our research hypothesiszes that the SCP1 gene is crucial for the adaptation of …

A Material History Of The Early Eighteenth-Century Cod Fishery In Canso, Nova Scotia, Adrian Lk Morrison Apr 2024

A Material History Of The Early Eighteenth-Century Cod Fishery In Canso, Nova Scotia, Adrian Lk Morrison

Northeast Historical Archaeology

In the early eighteenth century, Canso, Nova Scotia housed an influential Anglo-American fishing and trading community with far-reaching connections across Europe and the Americas. The islands were inhabited by a small permanent population joined each year by hundreds of migratory workers who established seasonal operations along their shores. Despite high hopes for long-term development, success would be short lived. Canso was a volatile space: the islands were contested territory and existed within a tense and turbulent frontier. The settlement was attacked multiple times and was destroyed in 1744. This paper draws upon new research and previous archaeological studies to discuss …

Transatlantic Traditions: The History Of Welsh Quarrying And Its Connections To Newfoundland Slate, Alexa D. Spiwak, Johanna Cole

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Previous archaeological investigations have conclusively shown that the presence of Welshmen has co-occurred with the practice of local slate quarrying in Newfoundland since the early colonial ventures of the 17th century. The island experienced a resurgence in Welsh culture in the 19th century when a number of small slate quarries were established overlooking both the Bay of Islands on the west coast and Smith Sound in Trinity Bay. The following article outlines the history of these 19th-century Newfoundland quarries, as well as the social, political and economic factors which encouraged the migration of Welsh quarrymen across the Atlantic to remote …

Inuit Land Use Patterns In The Hopedale Region, Deirdre A. Elliott Apr 2024

Inuit Land Use Patterns In The Hopedale Region, Deirdre A. Elliott

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This paper presents preliminary insights from an exploratory archaeological survey of the Hopedale region, Nunatsiavut. Despite its continued importance — from the 17th century as an Inuit whaling community — to the late 18th century with one of Labrador’s first Moravian missions, to today as the seat of the Nunatsiavut government, Hopedale has seen relatively little archaeological activity since the 1930s, and most of the islands and bays near the town had never been surveyed. A brief survey in the summer of 2018 recorded nearly 30 prehistoric, historic, and ethnographic sites, affirming the Labrador Inuit Association’s 1977 statement– “Our footprints …

Improper Divulgence: How Distrust And Poor Reporting Influenced Civilians Views Of The Three Mile Island Incident, Dylan Cumbo Apr 2024

Improper Divulgence: How Distrust And Poor Reporting Influenced Civilians Views Of The Three Mile Island Incident, Dylan Cumbo

Liberty University Research Week

This paper looks at how the media impacted the civilian opinion of the United States’ population on the Three Mile Island Incident. I argue that the media outlets reporting on the nuclear incident negatively impacted the public’s perception of the incident, making the disaster appear far worse than what was actually happening. Occurring on March 28, 1979, the meltdown of reactor number two at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania, was the worst nuclear incident in United States history. Prior to the meltdown, United States citizens already had exposure to the pros and cons of radiation. Influenced by their experiences with nuclear …

The Art Of The Sword And Sand: Roman Gladiators And Man’S Fascination With Martial Entertainment, Ethan Pierce Apr 2024

The Art Of The Sword And Sand: Roman Gladiators And Man’S Fascination With Martial Entertainment, Ethan Pierce

Liberty University Research Week

The ancient Romans were fascinated by spectacles of blood on the sands of the arena. Thousands of citizens flocked from all corners of the empire to see gladiators test their mettle against beasts and men alike. Films and popular culture have portrayed the arena as a ruthless blood bowl that one could only leave as a bloody pulp or a savage victor. While by modern standards, the arena can be seen as quite brutal and dangerous, this image of the games leaves an incomplete picture in the minds of many. Several misconceptions, born from popular media, ignore the scale of …

Counting The Days: The Connection Between Chronology And Eschatology In The Early Church, Jonathan Cook Apr 2024

Counting The Days: The Connection Between Chronology And Eschatology In The Early Church, Jonathan Cook

Liberty University Research Week

This research examines the connection between the world-week eschatological/apologetic schema and the development of Christian chronicons from the early church until the Carolingians. For young age creationists, knowing the age of the earth is incredibly important for constructing a working model of world history. Within the last decade, this has prompted renewed interest in the study of ancient Christian chronicons, specifically to understand what, if anything, the early church did with the systematic differences in the reported ages of the Genesis 5 and 11 genealogies. This engagement, primarily done by Henry Smith of Associates for Biblical Research and Lita Cosner …

Short & Long-Term Consequences Of Cannabis Intake & Differences Between Occasional & Chronic Frequent Cannabis Use, Marilyn Huestis Apr 2024

Short & Long-Term Consequences Of Cannabis Intake & Differences Between Occasional & Chronic Frequent Cannabis Use, Marilyn Huestis

Oxford ICSB

As the medicalization and legalization of the United States continues to increase it is important to understand the short- and long-term consequences of cannabis use. The endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter system is critical for the appropriate functioning of survival functions including hunger, body temperature control, memory and reproduction. When individuals use cannabis, they hijack the normal functioning of the system that attempts to maintain homeostasis. The most important short-term consequence of cannabis use is the morbidity and mortality of driving under the influence of cannabis. Also, legalization reduced the perception of risk of using cannabis that leads to higher adolescent and …

"'What The Suffering Was Like': Digital Affect In The Act Up Oral History Project, Margaret Sullivan

Remembrance: A Journal of Queer Culture, Information, and Preservation

This article considers The ACT UP Oral History Project as an affective site that renders visible the impact of loss and suffering. Focusing on the archive’s filmic and computer-mediated interviews, and placing both in conversation with memory and queer identity studies, I demonstrate that the Oral History Project, as a discursive space, invites its audience into a felt physical contact with grief, loss, anger, and rage.

Artificial insemination (Al) is the collection of semen from a male animal and breeding a female animal with the collected semen. AI has a long renowned history, dating back all the way to 1780, and continues to evolve every day. Artificial insemination allows farmers to inseminate their cattle efficiently, farmers can integrate DNA variation and desired genetics in livestock, and acts as a safe way to impregnate cattle by not having the risk of a live bull being used. It can be observed within multiple studies that when looking at smaller herds it can actually be more cost efficient to …

Worth Its Weight In Gold: Compassion Fatigue In Kentucky Animal Shelter Workers, Matthew Fitch, Elizabeth Perkins, Suzanne Tallichet Apr 2024

Worth Its Weight In Gold: Compassion Fatigue In Kentucky Animal Shelter Workers, Matthew Fitch, Elizabeth Perkins, Suzanne Tallichet

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Compassion fatigue is a term that describes the physical, emotional, and psychological effect of helping others in times of need. Stressful or traumatic experiences can trigger compassion fatigue, especially after the action of giving care or treatment to something only for it to fail expectations of recovery. Compassion fatigue is often compared to burnout, however, burnout is related to occupational stress and being overworked, while compassion fatigue comes from working with victims of trauma. Animal shelter workers consistently deal with animals who need care or treatment, causing compassion fatigue to become statistically higher in these individuals.

Food Price Narratives, Tammi S. Etheridge Apr 2024

Food Price Narratives, Tammi S. Etheridge

Scholarly Articles

The use of antitrust in the context of food is problematic because it so clearly violates the Consumer Welfare Standard as prescribed by the courts. Ultimately, antitrust rhetoric promoting ad nauseam enforcement will not improve consumer welfare. Advancing consumer welfare in the food industry must mean prioritizing lower food prices over some arbitrary threshold of market competition or protecting small farms. Courts can and should begin distinguishing these goals immediately.
