Epck Transfer Between Math And Science, Elise Marie Joyner Jun 2024

Epck Transfer Between Math And Science, Elise Marie Joyner

Theses and Dissertations

Generalist elementary school teachers have little time to develop enacted pedagogical content knowledge (ePCK) in all content areas. Therefore, the transfer of ePCK from one content area to another, such as between math and science, can help generalist teachers build their knowledge needed for teaching regardless of their content area strengths. This self-study examines the ePCK components and their elements present in both math and science instruction. I am a fifth-grade teacher in Utah County who has been teaching for 4 years. Math is taught daily, and science is taught approximately three times a week. The self-study includes six video …

Democracy, Chevron Deference, And Major Questions Anti-Deference, Richard W. Murphy Jun 2024

Democracy, Chevron Deference, And Major Questions Anti-Deference, Richard W. Murphy

Georgia Law Review

In 1984, the Supreme Court in its Chevron opinion invoked democratic values to help justify holding that courts should defer to an agency’s reasonable construction of a statute that it administers. In 2022, in West Virginia v. EPA, the Court invoked democratic values to help justify the major questions doctrine (MQD), which requires clear congressional authorization for agency claims of major regulatory power. Democracy, it seems, requires deference and anti-deference for agency statutory interpretations.

Or maybe not. This Article submits that the democracy talk of Chevron and West Virginia is implausible, misleading, and may have caused the law to evolve …

Can The Automated State Be Trusted? The Role Of Rule Of Law Safeguards For Governing Automated Decision-Making And Artificial Intelligence, Joanna Mazur, Maciej Bernatt

Georgia Law Review

The goal of this Article is to take a broader perspective on the lessons which can be learned from the implementation of automated decision-making in the public sector—specifically in regard to how procedural rule of law mechanisms can make such projects trustworthy. The underlying idea behind this Article is to posit the debate about the ADM within the context of rule of law as a key notion in liberal democracies. At the same time, we rely on a law and political economy framework. We look through the lens of power relations and assess to what extent selected procedural solutions governing …

She’S Got Her Ticket: The Lived Experience Of Reimagined Identity Among University-Educated Caribbean Black Gay Women, Sa-Rawla Stoute

Theses and Dissertations

The voice of Black gay women in the Anglophone Caribbean is often missing from the literature. This phenomenological study focuses on the lived experience of reimagined identity among university-educated Black gay women in the Anglophone Caribbean. This study also examines their meaning-making and agentive practices as they navigate cultural artifacts and negotiate their identity. Using van Manen’s data collection methods and analysis, this study highlights essential themes around a reimagined identity: reimagining requires permission, and reimagining one’s identity transforms frames of reference. Findings also highlight how participants use space and control their environment as resistance strategies and how they made …

An Assessment Of Equity, Compounding Disasters, And Climate Change In Hazard Mitigation Planning For The Portland Metro Region, Chris Lower Jun 2024

An Assessment Of Equity, Compounding Disasters, And Climate Change In Hazard Mitigation Planning For The Portland Metro Region, Chris Lower

Geography Masters Research Papers

Hazard mitigation plans (HMPs) are strategic documents or policies developed by governments, communities, and organizations to identify risks and reduce the impacts of natural and human- made hazards. These plans aim to minimize loss of life, property damage, and disruption from floods, wildfires, snowstorms, heatwaves, and other disasters. While useful, these plans infrequently and unevenly address the lived experiences of marginalized populations who bear the disproportionate impacts of recurrent disasters. Technocratic planning goals exacerbate these impacts by failing to center inclusive and equity-focused approaches, thus eroding the resilience capacities of many vulnerable groups including the poor and communities of color. …

Single-Molecule Orientation Imaging Reveals The Nano-Architecture Of Amyloid Fibrils Undergoing Growth And Decay, Brian Sun, Tianben Ding, Weiyan Zhou, Tara S. Porter, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

Amyloid-beta (Aβ42) aggregates are characteristic Alzheimer’s disease signatures, but probing how their nanoscale architectures influence their growth and decay remains challenging using current technologies. Here, we apply time-lapse single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM) to measure the orientations and rotational “wobble” of Nile blue (NB) molecules transiently binding to Aβ42 fibrils. We correlate fibril architectures measured by SMOLM with their growth and decay over the course of 5 to 20 min visualized by single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). We discover that stable Aβ42 fibrils tend to be well-ordered and signified by well-aligned NB orientations and small wobble. SMOLM also shows that increasing order …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Given the importance of climate in shaping species' geographic distributions, climate change poses an existential threat to biodiversity. Climate envelope modeling, the predominant approach used to quantify this threat, presumes that individuals in populations respond to climate variability and change according to species-level responses inferred from spatial occurrence data—such that individuals at the cool edge of a species' distribution should benefit from warming (the "leading edge"), whereas individuals at the warm edge should suffer (the "trailing edge"). Using 1,558 tree-ring time series of an aridland pine (Pinus edulis) collected at 977 locations across the species' distribution, we found …

Star Power: An Analysis Of Digital Astrology Content As An Instrument Of Political Tractability, Aliza Phillips

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

In an essay from 1953 titled, The Stars Down to Earth, Theodor Adorno performed an exacting analysis of the weekly horoscopes published in The Los Angeles Times to illuminate the latent authoritarianism embedded in the rhetoric of astrology. One of Adorno’s primary arguments is that an insidious form of political tractability is forged through the simultaneous determinism and individualism of astrology. Seventy years after The Stars Down to Earth, the genre of short-form astrology videos has skyrocketed in popularity across social media platforms. This essay offers a series of close readings of digital astrology videos to theorize both …

The recent success of cancer immunotherapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICIs), monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), cancer vaccines, and adoptive cellular therapies (ACTs), has revolutionized traditional cancer treatment. However, these immunotherapeutic modalities have variable efficacies, and many of them exhibit adverse effects. Oncolytic viral Immunotherapy (OViT), whereby viruses are used to directly or indirectly induce anti-cancer immune responses, is emerging as a novel immunotherapy for treating patients with different types of cancer. The herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) possesses many characteristics that inform its use as an effective OViT agents and remains a leading candidate. Its recent clinical success resulted in …

Early Threads Of Connection. Probing Infants' Understanding Of Caregiving Relationships, Christina Steele, Megan Richardson, Denis Tatone, Ashley Thomas Jun 2024

Early Threads Of Connection. Probing Infants' Understanding Of Caregiving Relationships, Christina Steele, Megan Richardson, Denis Tatone, Ashley Thomas

School of Psychology

Despite the centrality of caregiving relationships in the lives of infants, little is known about whether and how infants represent these relationships characterized by strong attachment and asymmetry in obligation and skills. The current studies (N=95) investigate whether 8-to-10-month-old infants attend to two cues‚Äîaffiliative touch and physical size‚Äîto predict who will respond to distress. In Study 1 (n=49), infants expected larger characters to respond to the emotional needs of smaller characters, only when they saw affiliative touch (proportion looking time at large character: BF10=6.72). In Study 2 (n=46), they did not expect smaller characters to respond to larger characters (proportion …

Infants Expect An Agent To Choose A Goal That Can Be Reached At A Lower Cost, Laura Schingloff-Nemecz, Denis Tatone, Barbara Pomiechowska, Gergely Csibra Jun 2024

Infants Expect An Agent To Choose A Goal That Can Be Reached At A Lower Cost, Laura Schingloff-Nemecz, Denis Tatone, Barbara Pomiechowska, Gergely Csibra

School of Psychology

According to prominent accounts of early actionunderstanding, infants’ interpretation of others’ actions isundergirded by an assumption of utility maximization. However, it is unclear whether this assumption applies only toselection among actions or also to selection among goals. Here, using an eye-tracking paradigm, we investigated whether 14-to 16-month-old infants would predict an agent to choose alower-cost option when faced with two identical outcomes thatcould be reached at different costs. Infants directed more looksto the lower-cost option, and this effect was not merely due tovisual saliency. These findings corroborate the proposal thatinfants rely on utility maximization when reasoning about anagent’s likely goal and provide …

Ford Madox Ford’S Unusual War: Ongoing Worry And Modernity, Nur Karatas Jun 2024

Ford Madox Ford’S Unusual War: Ongoing Worry And Modernity, Nur Karatas

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Parade’s End, Ford Madox Ford approaches the experience of trauma in an unusual way—it is no longer just past experiences, but the expectancy of dismal events that become as traumatic. Ford chooses worry for such rendering. In order to make the correlation between suffering and sensibility, he places worry in the lives of his characters, which reflects on Ford’s own life. This discussion will introduce the idea that worry is going to be a major component of Ford’s psychologising of war. I explore this worry-driven sensibility and the ways it is reflected, especially in the characters’ obsession with the …

Telomere dynamics are linked to aging hallmarks, and age-associated telomere loss fuels the development of epithelial cancers. In Apc-mutant mice, the onset of DNA damage associated with telomere dysfunction has been shown to accelerate adenoma initiation via unknown mechanisms. Here, we observed that Apc-mutant mice engineered to experience telomere dysfunction show accelerated adenoma formation resulting from augmented cell competition and clonal expansion. Mechanistically, telomere dysfunction induces the repression of EZH2, resulting in the derepression of Wnt antagonists, which causes the differentiation of adjacent stem cells and a relative growth advantage to Apc-deficient telomere dysfunctional cells. Correspondingly, in this mouse model, …
