Decency And Dignity: Exploring Margalit’S Concept Of Humiliation In The Filipino Context, Concordia Marie A. Lagasca-Hiloma
Decency And Dignity: Exploring Margalit’S Concept Of Humiliation In The Filipino Context, Concordia Marie A. Lagasca-Hiloma
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
While emphasizing the connection between dignity and selfrespect, Israeli philosopher Avishai Margalit contends that a decent society is one where institutions do not humiliate individuals. The Filipino translation of humiliation as paghiyâ introduces nuances, as its root word hiya also encompasses shame and embarrassment. In distinguishing between shame, embarrassment, and humiliation in Filipino society, this article argues that the closest translation aligning with Margalit’s concept is yurak. However, it also contends that applying the concept of pagkayurak ng pagkatao (desecration of one’s dignity) to Filipino social institutions presents challenges due to cultural values emphasizing respect, equality, and fairness.

Socrates Or Jesus: Forms Of Humanism In The God Debate, Adrian Rosenfeldt, Scott Doidge
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In the twenty-first–century God debate in the West two forms of humanism have emerged. On the atheist side of the debate, Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins have propagated a Socratic humanism that holds reason to be capable of providing a road map for the good life. On the religious apologist side of the debate, literary critic Terry Eagleton has advocated a form of tragic humanism. Hitchens and his fellow New Atheists contend that once our dark, superstitious, and religious past is expunged, reason will lead us toward an enlightened dawn. Eagleton rejects the New Atheist’s vision of a secular utopia. …

Locating The Ilokano Baglan In The Gender And Sexuality Continuum, Aurelio Solver Agcaoili
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The article is an attempt to recover the baglan tradition of ritual healing among the Ilokano people. Currently, only pejorative comments exist about this baglan tradition whose practices represent the continuum of sex, sexuality, and gender among these groups of people in the Northern Philippines. The argument presented leads to a critique of knowledge formation in colonial Ilocos and unmasks the problem of reproduced versions of the truth about the baglan and their role in the definition of the healthy human being and the healthy community. The ungendered baglan, is, in fact, the person that is all-gender, all-sex, and all-sexuality, …

Oncostatin M Receptor-Dependent Signaling Assessed By Rna Sequencing In Mouse Hematopoietic Stem Cells., Logan S Schwartz, Ruth L. Saxl, Timothy M Stearns, Maria Telpoukhovskaia, Jennifer J. Trowbridge
Faculty Research 2024
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a member of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family of cytokines and has been found to have anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory properties in various cellular and disease contexts. OSM signals through two receptor complexes, one of which includes OSMRβ. Here, we investigated OSM-OSMRβ signaling in adult mouse hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) using the conditional Osmrfl/fl mouse model B6;129-Osmrtm1.1Nat/J. We crossed Osmrfl/fl mice to interferon-inducible Mx1-Cre, which is robustly induced in adult HSCs. From these mice, we isolated HSCs by flow cytometry, stimulated with recombinant OSM or vehicle for 1 hour, and assessed gene expression changes in control versus Osmr …

Evaluating The Texas Risk Assessment System (Tras) Predictors Of Revocation And Early Release In Adult Felony Probation, Sarah A. El Sayed, Carley R. Shelton, Michael F. Teneyck
Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive
Although much is known about recidivism risk, less is known about factors predicting early release. The current study analyses a sample of 2,070 adult felony probation clients to see if offense characteristics, domains from the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS), and demographic variables impact both revocation and successful early release. Results revealed that predictors of early release mirrored those of revocation with one exception—race. Specifically, Black clients were 27% less likely to be granted early release. The findings highlight the TRAS is an effective tool to help mitigate bias for revocation of probation but not for granting early release.

Impact Of Career And Technical Education (Cte) On Adolescent Literacy In The Mississippi Delta, Shawana Lee Powell
Student Theses and Dissertations
Many students lack the comprehension skills required to navigate high school and the world (Turner, 2019). This qualitative narrative analysis study examined how the background of Career and Technical Education (CTE) educators’ shaped their educational experiences when embedding literacy in the CTE curriculum. The researcher interviewed ten CTE teachers in two public schools in the Mississippi Delta to understand CTE teacher experiences with embedding literacy in Grades 9–12 CTE content area classrooms. CTE teacher experiences regarding integrating literacy into the CTE curriculum and degree of certification was explored using Bandura’s social cognitive theory as a theoretical lens for this research …

Media Framing Of Transportation, Agriculture, And Gasoline In The Russia-Ukraine War, Sk Farhan Rabbi
Student Theses and Dissertations
The war between Russia and Ukraine has the potential to exacerbate social and economic effects on a worldwide scale, impacting several industries including energy, transportation, and agriculture crisis. Due to their heavy reliance on imports of key foods, the Middle East and North Africa are the most susceptible countries. The COVID-19 epidemic increased worldwide demand, and bad harvests all occurred at the same time as the conflict, further pressuring the food supply, transportation, and gasoline costs. Previous studies identified three categories: countries with diminishing fuel security, those making little advancements, and Latvia, which has undertaken noteworthy initiatives. Sanctions against Russia …

The essential role of interleukin 7 (IL-7) signaling via its receptor (IL-7Rα; CD127) in T cell development and function has been well documented. However, CD127 expression and function in myeloid cells, including monocytes, are less clear, especially in mice. In the present study we report an inducible CD127 expression in mouse monocytes/macrophages. This induction is dependent on the presence of other immune cells, highlighting that regulation of CD127 expression on monocytes differs in mice and humans. We demonstrate that CD127 is functional, as IL-7 downregulated its expression. We also saw decreased CD127 expression during inflammation in vivo. Overall, upregulation …

While poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi) have improved the prognosis of ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) tumors that are homologous recombination (HR) deficient (HRD), new therapeutic strategies are needed for tumors that are HR proficient (HRP) because they demonstrate greater resistance to current treatments and thus have poorer clinical outcomes. Additionally, clinical precautionary statements regarding potential risks associated with PARPi, such as myelodysplastic syndrome, highlight the need for combinatorial approaches that can lessen the dose and duration of PARPi treatment to reduce toxicities. Here, we evaluated DNA double-strand damage repair pathways in HRD and HRP ovarian cancer cell lines …

CRISPR base editors can introduce point mutations into DNA precisely, and cytosine base editors (CBEs) catalyze C to T transitions. While CBEs have been thoroughly explored in cell culture and organisms such as mice, little is known about DNA base editing in insects. In this study, we evaluated germline editing rates of three different CBEs expressed under actin (ubiquitous) or nanos (germline) promoters utilizing Drosophila melanogaster. The original Rattus norvegicus-derived cytosine deaminase APOBEC1 (rAPO-1) displayed high base editing rates (~99%) with undetectable indel formation. Additionally, we show that base editors can be used for generating male sterility and female lethality. …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) presents a fatal clinical challenge characterized by a dismal 5-year overall survival rate, primarily due to the lack of early diagnosis and limited therapeutic efficacy. Immunotherapy, a proven success in multiple cancers, has yet to demonstrate significant benefits in PDAC. Recent studies have revealed the immunosuppressive characteristics of the PDAC tumor microenvironment (TME), including immune cells with suppressive properties, desmoplastic stroma, microbiome influences, and PDAC-specific signaling pathways. In this article, we review recent advances in understanding the immunosuppressive TME of PDAC, TME differences among various mouse models of pancreatic cancer, and the mechanisms underlying resistance to …

On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson
On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson
ESI Working Papers
The wealth of the modern world is a natural historical marvel. Explaining it has traditionally been the purview of economic historians, as exemplified by the recent book How the World Became Rich by Mark Koyama and Jared Rubin. Economic historians, though, tend to only ask process-oriented “how” questions and “by what means” questions of the Great Enrichment. The eight co-authors of Explaining Technology, who are not economic historians, engage the debate asking a different question. Their goal is to explain the exponential shape of our enrichment with a model of the combinatorial evolution of technology. With an eye toward how …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified over fifty loci associated with lung cancer risk. However, underlying mechanisms and target genes are largely unknown, as most risk-associated variants might regulate gene expression in a context-specific manner. Here, we generate a barcode-shared transcriptome and chromatin accessibility map of 117,911 human lung cells from age/sex-matched ever- and never-smokers to profile context-specific gene regulation. Identified candidate cis-regulatory elements (cCREs) are largely cell type-specific, with 37% detected in one cell type. Colocalization of lung cancer candidate causal variants (CCVs) with these cCREs combined with transcription factor footprinting prioritize the variants for 68% of the GWAS loci. …

OBJECTIVE: Wearable monitors are increasingly used to assess sleep. However, validity is unknown for certain monitors and populations. We tested the Garmin Vivofit 4 in a pediatric clinical sample.
METHODS: Participants (n = 25) wore the monitor on their nondominant wrist during an overnight polysomnogram. Garmin and polysomnography were compared using 95% equivalence testing, mean absolute error, and Bland-Altman analysis.
RESULTS: On average (mean ± SD), the Garmin predicted later sleep onset (by 0.84 ± 1.60 hours) and earlier sleep offset (by 0.34 ± 0.70 hours) than polysomnography. The resulting difference for total sleep time was -0.55 ± 1.21 hours. …

Geographical Variation In The Photosynthesis Characteristics Of Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) Lab- And Field-Grown Seedlings, David Goldblum, Christa Kennett, Alicia Lisowski
The Geographical Bulletin
A number of recent studies suggest that in light of anthropogenic climate change, sugar maple (Acer saccharum) may not be adapted to persist over much of its current range. We consider variation in the species’ photosynthetic properties across its range. Seeds from Tennessee, Illinois, and Michigan were grown under laboratory conditions and in two experimental plots in Illinois and Michigan forests. In the Michigan forest, seedlings derived from Michigan seeds had significantly higher rates of carbon assimilation than those from Illinois. In the Illinois forest, seedlings from Tennessee had significantly greater carbon assimilation rates and light saturation points than seedlings …

This paper analyzes the relationship between weather patterns and bird migration to determine the feasibility of a site-specific migration forecast. Autumn migration data from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania for ten species were correlated with individual weather variables. Stepwise multiple linear regressions revealed a positive relationship with raptor migration to northwesterly winds and wind speed and an inverse relationship to sea level pressure. Composite maps were created using data from days with the greatest migration counts for each species and categorized by synoptic situations. A relationship between bird migration and cold-front passage was revealed, with five of the species having their …
