Aroma Comparison Of Different Pawpaw Cultivars From The Kentucky State University Pawpaw Research Program, Lauren A. Miskimen Oct 2024

Aroma Comparison Of Different Pawpaw Cultivars From The Kentucky State University Pawpaw Research Program, Lauren A. Miskimen

Honors Theses

The aim of this study was to perform an analysis on the volatile profile differences in six pawpaw cultivars. There are over 30 pawpaw cultivars known to exist, and the flavor differences can be quite different for each; however, limited flavor analytical work has been done to understand which flavor compounds could be causing those differences. Recent work in Dr. Zyzak’s lab using gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) has identified key aroma compounds in the KSU-AtwoodTM cultivar. However, little is known about the other cultivars. This approach involved two steps: using a combination of GC-O and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to …

Leks Of Hermit Hummingbirds The Importance Of Understanding The Complicated Mating System, Sophia Springer Oct 2024

Leks Of Hermit Hummingbirds The Importance Of Understanding The Complicated Mating System, Sophia Springer

Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation

Many species of the family Phaethornis, commonly known as hermit hummingbirds, engage in a lek mating system, in which males gather in groups to “perform” at a lek with the goal of attracting a female to copulate with. Their performance includes a repetitive song, and often movement of the tail feathers, while sitting on a perch low to the ground. Their success is often influenced by morphology, age, behavioral display, and location of their territory. Little research has been done on the leks of the tawny-bellied hermit, the white-whiskered hermit, and the stripe-throated hermit, three species of Phaethornis that can …

Systems Of Sustainable Chocolate: A Look Into The Effects Of Monocultural Cocoa Farming On Edaphic Macroinvertebrate Diversity In The Amazonian Foothills Of Ecuador, Emma L. Klemmensen

Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation

Agroforestry has been a recent topic for its regard to both human and environmental health. This is due to the vast benefits, ranging from increased carbon sequestration to food provisions for populations. As we’re beginning to deal with a warming climate and attempting to obtain international food security, it’s important to societally consider our food systems. However, to commit to action regarding more beneficial food systems, it's necessary to first fully understand them on an ecological level. As a step forward, this study explores the differences in macroinvertebrate communities between monoculture and polyculture agricultural systems. To consider biodiversity amongst these …

Acceso Al Agua En Oaxaca: Análisis De Discurso Y Derecho, Catherine Dezha Peralta Oct 2024

Acceso Al Agua En Oaxaca: Análisis De Discurso Y Derecho, Catherine Dezha Peralta

Mexico: Migration, Borders, and Transnational Communities

Fisheries Research Reports

Marine waters along the Western Australian coastline are characterised by low ecosystem productivity and high species diversity of fishes. With over 3,000 known species comprising estuarine, nearshore, demersal and pelagic fishes in the region, many contribute to important commercial and recreational fisheries (Lenanton et al. 1991; Molony et al. 2011; Newman et al. 2018). As it is logistically and economically infeasible to conduct intensive monitoring and high-level stock assessments of all exploited fish species in Western Australia, indicator species are used to assess the sustainability of suites of species of biological and ecological similarity, for optimal use of available resources …

Seeds Of Dependency: How Neocolonialism Acts‬ ‭ As A Barrier To Sustainable Agriculture In Cameroon’S Centre Region, Joseph Caltagirone

Cameroon: Development and Social Change

This paper aims to answer how neocolonialism has acted as a barrier to sustainable agriculture in the Centre region of Cameroon. This research draws on primary data from interviews with government officials, NGO employees, and farmers, as well as observations conducted in the village of Sa’a, and a review of literature on Cameroon’s colonial history and agricultural practices. It reveals that the barriers to sustainable agriculture are rooted in entrenched economic incentives driven by foreign investors and multinationals, with the complicity of the Cameroonian government, domestic NGOs, and producers. Findings uncovered that these financial incentives in turn encourage export driven …

Seizing The Moment: Climate Mainstreaming In The Ethekwini Municipality And Lessons On Leveraging Major Events, Xenia Ellis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Abstract

With the significant threat that climate change poses to societies across the world and specifically those in the Global South such as the eThekwini municipality, urgent and comprehensive action is necessary to mitigate and adapt to the devastating effects of climate change. Climate mainstreaming, which is the process of integrating climate strategies into all policies, plans, investments, decisions, and implementation in a government, is essential to addressing the issue. Existing literature has emphasized this importance, however, there has been minimal study of the process within the eThekwini municipality. This study aims to fill that gap and build an understanding …

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The Stockholm Resilience Centre has concluded that the number of "planetary boundaries" we are crossing has increased from three in 2009, when the Centre's researchers first introduced the concept, to six in 2023. Crossing these boundaries means humans are changing basic attributes of planetary systems to the point of risking the future of civilization. And the distinction between "safe" and "just" planetary boundaries raises questions regarding how to conceptualize the "good life." In this latest in a biannual series of essays, members of the Environmental Law Collaborative explore conceptions of the "good" as well as the various elements necessary to …

Khet खेत: Board Game Development As A Knowledge Producing Mechanism For Agroecological Development In Nepal, Margaret Mclaughlin Oct 2024

Khet खेत: Board Game Development As A Knowledge Producing Mechanism For Agroecological Development In Nepal, Margaret Mclaughlin

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

Sustainable agriculture is a frequently weaponized phrase with a varying degree of intentions and applications world-wide. For Nepal, true sustainability lies within cultivating traditional indigenous agricultural practices in favor of imported western methods which are ill suited for the unique geography of Nepal and the longevity of the people and place they call home. Agroecology, or the focus on the importance of biodiversity conservation and attention to the greater natural balance lies at the heart of agricultural development and community building efforts which sustain Nepali agriculture at its core. By using board game play as a facilitator of cooperative knowledge …

Street-Side Sovereignty: Informal Produce Vendors, Subsistence, And Chosen Interdependencies, Owen W. Lee

Samoa: Social and Environmental Change in Oceania

This paper summarizes findings from a 2024 survey and interview conducted with street-side produce vendors in Western Samoa. Produce vendors are understood within the informal economy in Samoa and the phenomenon is contextualized through a history of Pacific food regimes. In opposition to the contemporary corporate food regime, produce vendors operate through small-scale, informal operations which demonstrate variability and individual agency. Through the theoretical framework of food sovereignty, informal produce vendors’ survey and interview responses are analyzed to position vendors’ work within both the global and the Pacific food sovereignty movements, with special attention to land access and localized food …

From Custom To Courtroom: The Informal And Formal Justice Systems In The Manang And Narphu Valleys, Clarissa Sayre

Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples

This research paper aims to depict the structure and some of the current changes of the justice system in the Narphu and Manang Municipalities. The new Constitution of Nepal in 2015 mandated the establishment of one judicial committee in each municipality and rural municipality in the entire country. That’s 753 judicial committees. This is just one example of the recent and rapid change that the justice system in Nepal is currently undergoing. These new implementations of government bodies for justice aim to “mitigate the inefficiencies of the formal legal system and bridge the formal/informal justice divide. ” In both Narphu …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objectives

Cortical bone geometry is commonly used to investigate biomechanical properties of primate mandibles. However, the ontogeny of these properties is less understood. Here we investigate changes in cortical bone cross-sectional properties throughout capuchin ontogeny and compare captive versus wild, semi-provisioned groups. Tufted capuchins (Sapajus spp.) are known to consume relatively hard/tough foods, while untufted capuchins (Cebus spp.) exploit less mechanically challenging foods. Previous research indicates dietary differences are present early in development and adult Sapajus mandibles can resist higher bending/shear/torsional loads.

Materials and methods

This study utilized microCT scans of 22 Cebus and 45 Sapajus from early …

Advances In Biomedical Research And Treatments: What Is Acceptable?, Michael L. Clancy, Khalid M. Iskandarani, Mitchell C. Mccrea

Journal of Health Ethics

This study investigated the technology acceptance (TA) of twenty-first century biomedical treatments by adults in the United States. A new TA instrument was created, using five distinct levels: (1) Healing and Prevention, (2) Replacement Organs, (3) Enhancements-Medical, (4) Enhancements-Discretionary, and (5) Transhumans. An on-line survey produced 353 usable responses, which showed distinct patterns for each of five biomedical treatment levels. There was clear support for Levels 1–3, but very strong opposition to Levels 4–5. The TA finding draws the line between which human interventions are acceptable versus others that should be prohibited through public policies and medical guidelines.
