Faculty Research 2024

Caloric restriction extends healthy lifespan in multiple species. Intermittent fasting, an alternative form of dietary restriction, is potentially more sustainable in humans, but its effectiveness remains largely unexplored. Identifying the most efficacious forms of dietary restriction is key for developing interventions to improve human health and longevity. Here we performed an extensive assessment of graded levels of caloric restriction (20% and 40%) and intermittent fasting (1 and 2 days fasting per week) on the health and survival of 960 genetically diverse female mice. We show that caloric restriction and intermittent fasting both resulted in lifespan extension in proportion to the …

Feral Pigs And Their Control With 1080 Baiting, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Biosecurity factsheets

Feral pigs are the descendants of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa), which were first brought to Australia by early European colonists. Feral pigs cause a range of agricultural and environmental damage in Western Australia (WA), so control measures are important.

Tumor Detection In Mri Data Using Deep Learning Techniques For Image Classification And Semantic Segmentation, Muhammad Abid, Muhammad Shahid Oct 2024

Tumor Detection In Mri Data Using Deep Learning Techniques For Image Classification And Semantic Segmentation, Muhammad Abid, Muhammad Shahid

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

This study aims to apply image classification and semantic segmentation methods using deep learning for accurate and efficient tumor detection in brain MRI data. It looks at ways to get over issues including interpretability of the model and a lack of annotated data. A pre-trained VGG19 model and a basic convolutional neural network (CNN) were trained using a public dataset of 273 brain MRI images for the purpose of image classification. Techniques for regularization, transfer learning, and data augmentation were used. A U-Net architecture was trained using manually created masks from the same dataset for semantic segmentation, with several training …

Ophidiomyces Ophidiicola And Texas Snakes: A Field To Bench Study Of Ophidiomycosis, Kenlynn L. Volz Oct 2024

Ophidiomyces Ophidiicola And Texas Snakes: A Field To Bench Study Of Ophidiomycosis, Kenlynn L. Volz

Biology Theses

Ophidiomyces ophidiicola (Oo), the primary cause of Ophidiomycosis, is a fungal pathogen recently detected in Texas snakes. Prior to this study, there were major knowledge gaps regarding Oo growth, spread, and suitable environmental conditions. This study filled those gaps using a field to bench approach involving sampling snakes across Texas, in vitro fungal growth, and ecological niche modeling. 103 snakes were sampled across Texas in 2023 and 2024 and six cases of Oo infection were detected. Results of the growth experiment suggest that Oo prefers more stable temperatures and high humidity to a point and that there is a …

Innovative Soft Cryptosystem For Encrypting And Decrypting Messages With Idea, Muhammad Saeed, Hafiz Inamul Haq, Mubashir Ali, Mudassira Mustafa Oct 2024

Innovative Soft Cryptosystem For Encrypting And Decrypting Messages With Idea, Muhammad Saeed, Hafiz Inamul Haq, Mubashir Ali, Mudassira Mustafa

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

This paper introduces an advanced cryptosystem for message encryption and decryption, integrating the International Data Encryption Algorithm (IDEA) with soft set and soft matrix principles. Soft sets, conceptualized by Molodtsov, are adept at managing uncertainty, making them ideal for cryptographic frameworks. Our approach utilizes inverse and characteristic products of soft sets and matrices, combined with the robust IDEA algorithm, to significantly enhance security. The IDEA algorithm operates on 64 -bit data blocks with a 128 -bit key, ensuring strong encryption. Additionally, we incorporate the symmetric to introduce complex permutations, further strengthening the cryptographic process by ensuring unique encryptions for identical …

Financial Impacts Of 2020 Labor Day Wildfires To Oregon Highways, Kevin Christiansen, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Ayat Al Assi, Robert V. Rohli, Carol J. Friedland Oct 2024

Financial Impacts Of 2020 Labor Day Wildfires To Oregon Highways, Kevin Christiansen, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Ayat Al Assi, Robert V. Rohli, Carol J. Friedland

Faculty Publications

Wildfire-caused damage to highways has a significant financial cost to the local, regional, and state jurisdictions where they occur. This study examines the financial ramifications of the harm caused to highways by megafires, using a case study of the highways impacted in the U.S. state of Oregon by the five megafires that occurred during the 2020 Labor Day wildfires. This study proposes a method to classify financial road damage from these wildfires based upon curated datasets collected from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Hence, this study presents a dataset with labeled classes, which include physical, roadway, and traffic. Physical …

Examining The Influence Of Social Media Influencers On Fast Fashion Consumption And Environmental Impact: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Leah Kemple

Communications Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

As the production and disposal of cheap, trendy clothing continues to be a growing environmental crisis, fast fashion companies are only increasing profits and strengthening their marketing tactics. A prevailing tactic for these companies is the use of social media influencers promoting fast fashion items online. This explanatory sequential mixed methods research study analyzes the themes within the content promoted by social media influencers and then gives context to those themes through the voices of social media users. This study reveals a presence of personal branding, relatability, and repetition in social media content promoting fast fashion. Additionally, it reveals the …

Using Gis To Visualize Daily Routines At The Neighborhood And Household Scales: A Feminist Approach Using A Nineteenth-Century Diary, Sterling Quinn Oct 2024

Using Gis To Visualize Daily Routines At The Neighborhood And Household Scales: A Feminist Approach Using A Nineteenth-Century Diary, Sterling Quinn

Geography Faculty Scholarship

Feminist scholars in the discipline of geography have noted the ways that routine activities at the household and neighborhood scales contribute to power relations and identity formation. Geographic information systems (GIS), with their ability to create multiple visual representations of people’s experiences in space at any scale, hold great potential for revealing these local processes and patterns that are often lost or invisible in broader historical narratives, especially when they pertain to women and children. This article contributes an example by using GIS to encode and map everyday events in a diary kept by Elisabeth Koren, a nineteenth-century Norwegian immigrant …

Holistic Methodologies For Fusing The Material And The Ideological: Tracing The Sociotechnical Imaginaries That Enable The World’S Fastest Supercomputer, Sarah Read, Jordan Firth

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

When the Aurora supercomputer launches at Argonne National Laboratory it will operate at the exascale and be one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. We have been invited by Argonne to do field work to understand both the day-to-day processes that maintain supercomputing (e.g. user documentation, government reporting, user testing) and the sociotechnical national imaginaries [11], –in particular the increasingly tense global competition between the US and China in the supercomputing race–that shaped the development of Aurora. This article proposes our work-in-progress methodological approach that accounts for both higher-level imaginaries and the everyday practices of supercomputing. We also describe …
