Framing Immanence In Carl Theodor Dreyer’S Ordet And Carlos Reygadas’S Stellet Licht, Andre Fischer
Framing Immanence In Carl Theodor Dreyer’S Ordet And Carlos Reygadas’S Stellet Licht, Andre Fischer
Journal of Religion & Film
My article proposes the notion of the immanent frame to productively address film-theoretical and theological concepts at stake in Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Ordet (1955) and Carlos Reygadas’s Stellet Licht (2007). I believe my intervention to be significant for it shows how both films are not only related in their religious subject matter but negotiate it in formal terms through the notion of the immanent frame. Although both films have been analyzed alongside one another in the past, my article is the first to address the Mennonite migration history and notion of secularization (Taylor) to explain the function of the time-images …
Bodies Of Horror In Judges 19-21 And Evil Dead Ii (1987), Jennifer M. Matheny, Aaron Bohn
Bodies Of Horror In Judges 19-21 And Evil Dead Ii (1987), Jennifer M. Matheny, Aaron Bohn
Journal of Religion & Film
Sam Raimi's Evil Dead II (1987), a horror film, demonstrates key thematic parallels with Judges 19-21. Evil Dead IIidentifies with the film genres of “splatter horror” and “dark comedy” with a B-movie cult classic vibe. Placing the Bible’s body horror (Judges 19) and horror film in dialogue on their own terms creates an intertextual dialogue that can be fruitful when dealing with violent biblical texts that communicate an excess state of terror (Phyllis Trible). Through the lens of postbiblical intertextuality (Marianne Grohmann and Hyun Chul Paul Kim), this paper will explore thematic parallels and connections in conversation between Evil …
The Pig, The Snake And The Pigeon: A Buddhist Reimagination Of The Classic Tale Of Zhou Chu, Henry C.H. Shiu
The Pig, The Snake And The Pigeon: A Buddhist Reimagination Of The Classic Tale Of Zhou Chu, Henry C.H. Shiu
Journal of Religion & Film
This article examines the Buddhist inspirations underlying the contemporary reinterpretation of the classic, Zhou Chu Chu Sanhai (Zhou Chu Eliminates the Three Scourges) in the Taiwanese film entitled The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon. Beyond the obvious reinterpretation of the “three scourges” in the original tale as the “three poisons” of greed, hatred, and delusion in the film, one also finds a deeper connection with the notion of “skillful means” (upāya-kauśalya) and the Parable of the Burning House in the Lotus Sūtra as well as the tension between established religious beliefs and new religious …
Televangelism And Religion In Star Trek V And Licence To Kill, Robert Revington
Televangelism And Religion In Star Trek V And Licence To Kill, Robert Revington
Journal of Religion & Film
In June 1989, both Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and the James Bond film Licence to Kill were released in theatres within days of each other. This study analyzes how story elements in both films were directly inspired by recent televangelist scandals in the United States. The Star Trek film was also intended to have a deeper examination of the nature of God and the Devil. Nonetheless, both films were also intended to appeal to a mass audience. To that end, these films' explorations of religious issues were watered down to avoid offending Christian denominations or churches (though not …
Zeami's Buddhism And Noh In Kurosawa's Ikiru, Ronald S. Green
Zeami's Buddhism And Noh In Kurosawa's Ikiru, Ronald S. Green
Journal of Religion & Film
This paper explores the influences of Noh drama theorist Zeami Motokiyo on Akira Kurosawa's 1952 film Ikiru. While Kurosawa's adaptations of traditional Japanese arts are well documented, this study uniquely demonstrates how specific Noh aesthetics shaped this film. It analyzes how Kurosawa's direction of actor Takashi Shimura embodies Zeami's aesthetic principles of awareness of impermanence (mujō), profound mystery (yūgen), and no-mind (mushin), which are performative expressions of Buddhist philosophies. Kurosawa employs four methods developed by Zeami: the use of masks, sparseness in settings and costumes, singing, and the application of an …
Learning To See: Wittgenstein And Perception In Terrence Malick’S The Thin Red Line, Luke H. Roberts
Learning To See: Wittgenstein And Perception In Terrence Malick’S The Thin Red Line, Luke H. Roberts
Journal of Religion & Film
This paper reflects on Ludwig Wittgenstein’s influence on the work of filmmaker Terrence Malick. After calling attention to the connection between the American director and the Austrian philosopher, I note central components of Wittgenstein’s philosophical aims, particularly highlighting his comments on “aspect change,” his methodology of difficulty, and his linking of the ethical and aesthetic as “transcendental.” With these insights in hand, and following recent scholarship on Malick’s cinematic ethics, the paper examines Malick’s 1998 film The Thin Red Line as an exemplary case for considering Malick as a filmmaker fundamentally concerned with ways of seeing the world. The analysis …
Lecture Iii: The Origin Of The Books Of The Old Testament, Part 1, Earl Clement Davis
Lecture Iii: The Origin Of The Books Of The Old Testament, Part 1, Earl Clement Davis
Lectures on the Origin and History of the Bible
Lecture III, "The Origin of the Books of the Old Testament, Part 1," discusses the scholarly efforts, known in 1916 as "higher criticism," that bring careful historical and linguistic analysis to the study of biblical texts. Davis illustrates that text clearly shows that the Old Testament cannot be simply the received word of God because of various problems, including the idea that Moses could describe his own death, double accounts of creation and of the flood.

Life, Death And Energy: What Does Nature Select?, James H. Brown, Chen Hou, Charles A.S. Hall, Joseph R. Burger
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Evolutionary biology is poised for a third major synthesis. The first presented Darwin's evidence from natural history. The second incorporated genetic mechanisms. The third will be based on energy and biophysical processes. It should include the equal fitness paradigm (EFP), which quantifies how organisms convert biomass into surviving offspring. Natural selection tends to maximize energetic fitness, formula presented, where formula presented is mass-specific rate of cohort biomass production, formula presented is generation time, formula presented is fraction of cohort production that is passed to surviving offspring, and formula presented is energy density of biomas. At steady state, parents replace themselves …

This piece was written to answer the question 'If we never had to feel bad emotions, would we take that opportunity?' I wanted to explore how all of our emotions contribute to our way of being and are necessary to develop us as people. I hope to flesh out this work into a longer piece of fiction someday, but right now it is a short story.
Effects Of Roadways On Seasonal Movement Strategies And Mate Location Success In An Imperiled Pit Viper (Crotalus Horridus), Elizabeth J. Noble
Effects Of Roadways On Seasonal Movement Strategies And Mate Location Success In An Imperiled Pit Viper (Crotalus Horridus), Elizabeth J. Noble
Graduate Research Showcase
A detailed understanding of animal movement behavior is fundamental to effective conservation and management. Within populations, a diversity of movement strategies can be displayed in search of critical resources, and these strategies are influenced by multiple interacting factors related to individuals and the environment. Mating partners are one critical resource that often serves as a prominent selective force shaping movement during mating seasons. For many large-bodied snakes, such as pit vipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae), male mate- searching movements are the primary determinant of mate location success. During this time, males incur significant risks associated with elevated movement. In an increasingly human- …

Resource Selection Of The Southern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger Niger) In The Coastal Plain Of Virginia, Marissa H. Guill, Jesse L. De La Cruz, K. Marc Puckett, W. Mark Ford
Virginia Journal of Science
The southern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger niger) is a subspecies of fox squirrel that ranges from southeastern Virginia to northern Florida. Throughout its Southeastern range, southern fox squirrel habitat of natural mixed pine-hardwood forests has been fragmented by agriculture and short-rotation pine plantations. In Virginia, remaining habitat has been transformed by fire suppression on the landscape and has in turn resulted in small, disjunct populations of southern fox squirrels. We sought to identify the home range and resource utilization of southern fox squirrels in the southern Coastal Plain of Virginia. From established nest boxes, we captured, radio collared …

The Green Divide: Investigating Possible Socioeconomic Inequities In Public Green Space Quality In Lisbon, Portugal, Paul Coffield
The Green Divide: Investigating Possible Socioeconomic Inequities In Public Green Space Quality In Lisbon, Portugal, Paul Coffield
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
Public green spaces are an essential element of urban design, providing numerous environmental, social, and health-related benefits to urban populations. This study assesses the quality of public green spaces across four neighborhoods of varying socioeconomic status in Lisbon, Portugal, asking ‘Are socioeconomic inequities in park quality present in Lisbon?’ While previous studies have assessed the spatial distribution of urban green space in Lisbon, this study focuses on the quality of Lisbon’s green spaces, as quality determines to what extent a green space benefits the community in which it is located. Four Lisbon parishes were selected based on their median gross …
The Impact Of The Nitrates Directive On The Portuguese Agricultural Sector, Ben Mayes
The Impact Of The Nitrates Directive On The Portuguese Agricultural Sector, Ben Mayes
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
The European Union’s 1991 Nitrates Directive was designed to mitigate agricultural nitrogen pollution to ground and surface waters, thereby alleviating its damaging effects to natural environments and human health. This study confirmed that its purpose and goals were justified by the positive linear relationship that exists between levels of agricultural fertilizer application and nitrogen ecosystem surplus. However, this policy has had several second-hand impacts on the Portuguese agricultural sector, such as imposing infrastructure implementation costs and forcing methodology changes. These impacts were examined in the context of the Esposende-Vila do Conde action program, which is within a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone …

Sabbath Rest, Gregory Mcmullen
Doctor of Leadership
Limited time and finances have significantly contributed to the spiritual decay and practice of the Sabbath in Snohomish County. Through this study, I have identified that community members, immigrants, and refugees are impacted the most by working overtime or two jobs to provide a home for their families. Many immigrants not only have to work very hart but but most frequent food banks and seek assistance from the local church. Unfortunately, things are better as a high percentage of firstborn Slavic and Hispanics students drop out of school to work or take care of their younger siblings. Native Americans followed …

Assessing Geospatial Modeling In Determining Optimal Afforestation Locations For Carbon Sequestration In The Isafjord Region, Kyle Pellerin
Iceland: Climate Change and The Arctic
Iceland was once a country with large forests that covered over a third of the island's total landmass. Over the course of the past thousand years of settlement, the percentage of the country covered in forest dwindled, at some points dropping to less than one percent. Based on this deforestation history, and the potential of reforesting the land to help reduce the impact of carbon emissions, afforestation efforts in Iceland have been underway for the better half of a century. Despite the many years of effort, a lack of data and mapping exists on ideal planting locations, and the factors …
