Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray Oct 2024

Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray

Canadian Military History

The Second World War saw women officially serving in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. The service of over fifty thousand Canadian women is documented in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada; photographs that allow historians to widen the lens on the traditional narrative, but only if they can find them. This article presents two methods for indexing archival photographs and highlights the particular challenges of identifying servicewomen in the archival record and bringing our aunties and grandmas into focus.

Environment

We are living through significant environmental, social, political, and economic challenges. These challenges have strained our communities and humanbuilt systems, as well as our interconnected habitats, wildlife, and natural systems. Lack of adequate infrastructure to withstand natural disasters and climate change, as well as historical and presentday inequities in resources across neighborhoods, are examples of the multifaceted and interconnected threats contributing to the accelerated loss of our rich biodiversity. This natural abundance is integral to our region’s health, history, and continued prosperity.

Differential Hepatic Expression Of Mirna In Response To Aflatoxin B1 Challenge In Domestic And Wild Turkeys, Kade Jorud, Kristelle M. Mendoza, Thomas Kono, Roger A. Coulombe, Kent M. Reed

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a major foodborne mycotoxin that poses a significant economic risk to poultry due to a greater degree of susceptibility compared to other agricultural species. Domesticated turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are especially sensitive to AFB1; however, wild turkeys (M. g. silvestris) are more resistant. A lack of functional isoforms of hepatic glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), an enzyme that plays a role in the detoxification of aflatoxin, is suspected as the reason for the increased sensitivity. Previous studies comparing the gene expression of domesticated and wild turkeys exposed to AFB1 identified …

Preparation And Efficacy Evaluation Of Chicken Egg Yolk Sourced Igy Against The Venoms Of Cobra, Krait, Russell’S Viper, And Saw-Scaled Viper, Gayathri G

Theses and Dissertations

Envenomation resulting from snakebites is widely recognized as an alarming health risk in tropical and sub-tropical areas. The big four snakes including Naja naja, Bungarus caeruleus, Daboia russelli, Echis carinatus are responsible for most of the envenomation in India. The current therapy for snake envenomation is immunoglobulins, produced from serum or plasma of horses or sheep. To overcome the drawbacks of current antivenom, chicken egg yolk (IgY) antibodies have recently emerged as one of the most promising research avenues.

In this study, the efficacy of chicken egg yolk sourced antisnake venom (ASV) IgY against the big four venoms was evaluated …

Acetylcholine (ACh) is thought to play a role in driving the rapid, spontaneous brain-state transitions that occur during wakefulness; however, the spatiotemporal properties of cortical ACh activity during these state changes are still unclear. We perform simultaneous imaging of GRAB-ACh sensors, GCaMP-expressing basal forebrain axons, and behavior to address this question. We observed a high correlation between axon and GRAB-ACh activity around periods of locomotion and pupil dilation. GRAB-ACh fluorescence could be accurately predicted from axonal activity alone, and local ACh activity decreased at farther distances from an axon. Deconvolution of GRAB-ACh traces allowed us to account for sensor kinetics …

Gene Therapy For Fat-1 Prevents Obesity-Induced Metabolic Dysfunction, Cellular Senescence, And Osteoarthritis, Ruhang Tang, Natalia S Harasymowicz, Chia-Lung Wu, Yun-Rak Choi, Kristin Lenz, Sara J Oswald, Farshid Guilak

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Obesity is one of the primary risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA), acting through cross talk among altered biomechanics, metabolism, adipokines, and dietary free fatty acid (FA) composition. Obesity and aging have been linked to cellular senescence in various tissues, resulting in increased local and systemic inflammation and immune dysfunction. We hypothesized that obesity and joint injury lead to cellular senescence that is typically associated with increased OA severity or with aging and that the ratio of omega-6 (ω-6) to omega-3 (ω-3) FAs regulates these pathologic effects. Mice were placed on an ω-6-rich high-fat diet or a lean control diet and …

The Representation Of Decision Variables In Orbitofrontal Cortex Is Longitudinally Stable, Manning Zhang, Alessandro Livi, Mary Carter, Heide Schoknecht, Andreas Burkhalter, Timothy E Holy, Camillo Padoa-Schioppa

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The computation and comparison of subjective values underlying economic choices rely on the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). In this area, distinct groups of neurons encode the value of individual options, the binary choice outcome, and the chosen value. These variables capture both the choice input and the choice output, suggesting that the cell groups found in the OFC constitute the building blocks of a decision circuit. Here, we show that this neural circuit is longitudinally stable. Using two-photon calcium imaging, we record from the OFC of mice engaged in a juice-choice task. Imaging of individual cells continues for up to 40 …

Organisms integrate circadian and metabolic signals to optimize substrate selection to survive starvation, yet precisely how this occurs is unclear. Here, we show that hepatocyte Period 1 (Per1) is selectively induced during fasting, and mice lacking hepatocyte Per1 fail to initiate autophagic flux, ketogenesis, and lipid accumulation. Transcriptomic analyses show failed induction of the fasting hepatokine Fgf21 in Per1-deficient mice, and single-nucleus multiome sequencing defines a putative responding hepatocyte subpopulation that fails to induce the chromatin accessibility near the Fgf21 locus. In vivo isotopic tracing and indirect calorimetry demonstrate that hepatocyte Per1-deficient mice fail to transit from oxidation of glucose …

Prostate cancer (PCa) poses a significant global health challenge, particularly due to its progression into aggressive forms like neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC). This study developed and validated a stemness-associated gene signature using advanced machine learning techniques, including Random Forest and Lasso regression, applied to large-scale transcriptomic datasets. The resulting seven-gene signature (KMT5C, DPP4, TYMS, CDC25B, IRF5, MEN1, and DNMT3B) was validated across independent cohorts and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. This signature demonstrated strong prognostic value for progression-free, disease-free, relapse-free, metastasis-free, and overall survival. Importantly, the signature not only identified specific NEPC subtypes, …

New distribution records and a redescription are presented for Caperhantus cicurius (Fabricius, 1787), a diving beetle endemic to the Cape region of South Africa, which is only distantly related to other Afrotropical dytiscids. We show that the species is much more widely distributed than previously recognized and present details of occupied habitats for the first time. Caperhantus cicurius occurs throughout the winter rainfall zone in South Africa, from Namaqualand to the Eastern Cape Province, particularly in temporary waters in the Fynbos and Succulent Karoo biomes.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary kidney disease and causes significant morbidity, ultimately leading to kidney failure. PKD pathogenesis is characterized by complex and dynamic alterations in multiple cell types during disease progression, hampering a deeper understanding of disease mechanism and the development of therapeutic approaches. Here, we generate a single-nucleus multimodal atlas of an orthologous mouse PKD model at early, mid, and late timepoints, consisting of 125,434 single-nucleus transcriptomic and epigenetic multiomes. We catalog differentially expressed genes and activated epigenetic regions in each cell type during PKD progression, characterizing cell-type-specific responses to

The very-low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR) has been reported as an entry receptor for Semliki Forest (SFV) and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEEV) alphaviruses in cell cultures. However, the role of VLDLR in alphavirus pathogenesis and the extent to which other alphaviruses can engage VLDLR remains unclear. Here, using a surface protein-targeted CRISPR-Cas9 screen, we identify VLDLR as a receptor for Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) and demonstrate that it promotes the infection of multiple viruses in the WEE antigenic complex. In vivo studies show that the pathogenicity of WEEV, EEEV, and SFV, but not the distantly related Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus, …

Environmental House Calls Can Reduce Symptoms Of Chemical Intolerance: A Demonstration Of Personalized Exposure Medicine, Rudolfo Rincón, Roger Perales, Raymond F. Palmer, Jackie F. Forster, Jessica F. Hernandez, Bryan Bayles, Carl Grimes, Carlson R. Jaén, Claudia S. Miller

Public Health (Archived)

Aim: The goals of this investigation were to 1) identify and measure exposures inside homes of individuals with chemical intolerance (CI), 2) provide guidance for reducing these exposures, and 3) determine whether our environmental house calls (EHCs) intervention could reduce both symptoms and measured levels of indoor air contaminants.

Background: CI is an international public health and clinical concern, but few resources are available to address patients’ often disabling symptoms. Numerous studies show that levels of indoor air pollutants can be two to five (or more) times higher than outdoor levels. Fragranced consumer products, including cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and …

Maine Recognizes The Independent Tort Of Negligent Infliction Of Emotional Distress: Gammon V. Osteopathic Hospital, Jaye E. Rooney

Maine Law Review

Gerald Gammon opened his deceased father's hospital bag, expecting to find his personal effects. Instead, he discovered a bloodied leg, severed below the knee and bluish in color. Recoiling in horror, he yelled, "Oh my God, they have taken my father's leg off.” His aunt later recalled at trial that "he was as white as a ghost" and she thought he was going to have a heart attack. Gerald received a call on November 7, 1982, from the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine informing him that his father, Linwood Gammon, had succumbed to cancer that morning. A funeral home employee picked …
