Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Structural modifications in lichen phenolic compounds have been one of the tools to potentiate their biological activity. In the present work, seven alkyl derivatives of norstictic acid were prepared and evaluated against eight cell lines. Norstictic acid was isolated from the lichen Ramalina anceps and the alkyl derivatives were obtained through reactions with alcohols. Cytotoxicity was evaluated against the 786-0 (kidney carcinoma), MCF7 (breast carcinoma), HT-29 (colon carcinoma), PC-03 (prostate carcinoma), HEP2 (laryngeal carcinoma), B16-F10 (murine melanoma), UACC-62 (human melanoma), and NIH/3T3 (mouse embryonic fibroblast) cell lines using the sulforhodamine B assay. Norstictic acid exhibited poor activity, while the 8'-O-n-butyl-norstictic …

Tick-Borne Diseases And Pregnancy: A Narrative Review Evaluating Pregnancy Complications Caused By Tick-Borne Diseases, Michael W Curtis, Job E Lopez

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Ticks are vectors of public health concern because the pathogens they transmit can cause detrimental diseases in humans. Lyme disease, tick-borne relapsing fever, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tick-borne encephalitis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and babesiosis are some of the most common diseases caused by the pathogens transmitted by ticks. The overlap between human activities and tick habitats is growing, contributing to an increase in tick-borne disease cases. Unfortunately, pregnancy as a risk factor for tick-borne diseases is largely ignored. In this narrative review we use case reports, epidemiological studies, and animal studies to evaluate the maternal, pregnancy, and …

Impact Of Drinking Water And Sanitation Facilities On Child Mortality In Sierra Leone, Christie Ben-Carew Oct 2024

Impact Of Drinking Water And Sanitation Facilities On Child Mortality In Sierra Leone, Christie Ben-Carew

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are viewed as key contributors to the high rates of under-5 child deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. In one of the countries in the region, Sierra Leone, there was an absence of studies on the potential impacts of WASH on child mortality. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how variables related to access to toilet facilities and safe drinking water in rural and urban areas of Sierra Leone impact child mortality. Secondary data from the United Nations Children's Fund 2017 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (N = 18,006) were analyzed as part of this …

Cell plasticity, changes in cell fate, is crucial for tissue regeneration. In the lung, failure of regeneration leads to diseases, including fibrosis. However, the mechanisms governing alveolar cell plasticity during lung repair remain elusive. We previously showed that PCLAF remodels the DREAM complex, shifting the balance from cell quiescence towards cell proliferation. Here, we find that PCLAF expression is specific to proliferating lung progenitor cells, along with the DREAM target genes transactivated by lung injury. Genetic ablation of Pclaf impairs AT1 cell repopulation from AT2 cells, leading to lung fibrosis. Mechanistically, the PCLAF-DREAM complex transactivates CLIC4, triggering TGF-β signaling activation, …

Mitochondrial Memory: Transgenerational Trauma, Functional Medicine, And Quantum Physics, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Building from Karen Barad’s “diffractive methodological approach” (2007, 71), this article combines Mariella Pandolfi’s notion of the female body as a transgenerational “physiological memoir” (1990, 255) with functional medicine perspectives on mitochondria and advances in quantum physics around “entanglement” to explore a new concept—“mitochondrial memory.” Recent findings in biological research depict a communicating collective of mitochondria distributed across different “human” organs and describe how this collective controls many aspects of human health through epigenetic mechanisms. Since exact copies of mitochondria are inherited through the maternal line, I draw from anthropological theory, functional medicine research, and recent discoveries in physics to …

Selective Pericyte Recruitment To Ec-Lined Tubes, Vessel Assembly Enhancement Through Pericyte Timp-3 Induction, And Pericyte Tbx2 In Capillary Formation And Maturation, Ksenia Marilyn Yrigoin Kaluguina

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Capillaries, the smallest blood vascular networks, are formed by narrow and elongated endothelial cell (EC)-lined tubes with associated pericytes anchored to the abluminal tube surface. Our laboratory demonstrated that dynamic interactions between ECs and pericytes during capillary tube network assembly are required for basement membrane matrix deposition and maturation. We have also shown that key EC-derived factors promote pericyte recruitment, proliferation, and pericyte-induced basement membrane formation during capillary assembly. In the first section, we aim to identify if vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) respond to the same factors and have the same invasive ability as pericytes since they are both …

Rictor, A Mtorc2 Protein, Regulates Lymphatic Valve Formation And Maintenance Through The Akt-Foxo1 Signaling Axis, Richa Banerjee Oct 2024

Rictor, A Mtorc2 Protein, Regulates Lymphatic Valve Formation And Maintenance Through The Akt-Foxo1 Signaling Axis, Richa Banerjee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The lymphatic vasculature maintains tissue fluid homeostasis by absorbing interstitial fluid to form lymph and transporting it back to the bloodstream. Collecting lymphatic vessels have lymphatic valves (LVs) that prevent the retrograde flow of lymph generated by hydrostatic pressure from the blood vasculature. Backflow and accumulation of lymph leads to a lymphatic pathology called lymphedema. This implicates the involvement of defective LVs in the pathogenesis of lymphedema and warrants the study of lymphatic valve development and maintenance. The LVs are formed through a process called mechanotransduction which signals through the intracellular PI3K-AKT pathway in lymphatic endothelial cells. However, the activation …

Background: One in eight children experience early life stress (ELS), which increases risk for psychopathology. ELS, particularly neglect, has been associated with reduced responsivity to reward. However, little work has investigated the computational specifics of this disrupted reward response - particularly with respect to the neural response to Reward Prediction Errors (RPE) - a critical signal for successful instrumental learning - and the extent to which they are augmented to novel stimuli. The goal of the current study was to investigate the associations of abuse and neglect, and neural representation of RPE to novel and non-novel stimuli.

Methods: One hundred …

Climate Change And The Logan River: Past, Present, And Future, Mercy Smith, Kendall Becker, Scott Hotaling

All Current Publications

The Logan River runs through Idaho and northern Utah, beginning in the Bear River Mountains and flowing through Logan Canyon to Cutler Reservoir. The river is socially and ecologically significant to the Cache Valley community. Throughout its history, the Logan River’s water and energy have sustained life within the valley. However, climate change is threatening the Logan River’s support of both human and animal communities. Rising water temperatures and reduced flow caused by declining snowpack may impair the river’s ability to maintain healthy ecosystems.

Diversity Of Gill Cichlidogyrus Spp. (Monopisthocotylean) Infecting Coptodon Zillii (Gervais, 1848) From Lake Naivasha, Kenya, Nehemiah M Rindoria

Polytechnic Journal

Monopisthocotyleans of the genus Cichlidogyrus are ectoparasites which infest on skin, fins and gills of most teleosts in both capture fisheries and aquaculture. These parasites are often unnoticed, yet they cause damages to the organs they affect thereby increasing susceptibility of the fish to secondary infections. A total of fifty specimens of the introduced Redbelly tilapia Coptodon zillii (Gervais, 1848) were collected between November 2014 and April 2015 from Lake Naivasha, Kenya, and studied with the aim of collecting and identifying the gill monopisthocotyleans. Standard methods of parasitological examination were used in the identification of gill monopisthocotyla species. The collected …

The Primacy Of Density-Mediated Indirect Effects In A Community Of Wolves, Elk, And Aspen, Elaine M. Brice, Eric J. Larsen, Daniel R. Stahler, Daniel R. Macnulty

Aspen Bibliography

The removal or addition of a predator in an ecosystem can trigger a trophic cascade, whereby the predator indirectly influences plants and/or abiotic processes via direct effects on its herbivore prey. A trophic cascade can operate through a density-mediated indirect effect (DMIE), where the predator reduces herbivore density via predation, and/or through a trait-mediated indirect effect (TMIE), where the predator induces an herbivore trait response that modifies the herbivore's effect on plants. Manipulative experiments suggest that TMIEs are an equivalent or more important driver of trophic cascades than are DMIEs. Whether this applies generally in nature is uncertain because few …

Synthesis Of Neuronal Network Dynamics For Optimal Stimulus Encoding And Retention, Bethanna Thompson Oct 2024

Synthesis Of Neuronal Network Dynamics For Optimal Stimulus Encoding And Retention, Bethanna Thompson

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

A central goal in neuroscience is to understand the relationship between the structure and activity of the brain and the resulting experience of thought and behavior that the brain underpins. Within this goal is the specific study of working memory: the process of storing, managing, and integrating incoming sensory information in the context of ongoing tasks. The process of working memory is foundational to higher cognition and reasoning, determining how we comprehend and interact with the world around us. The neural circuits responsible for working memory are seemingly able to store and process afferent stimuli with other recent or relevant …

Mutual Recognitions Across Generations, Steven L. Winter Walter S. Gibbs Distinguished Professor Of Constitutional Law

Law Faculty Research Publications

“Sovereignty,” Arendt says, “is contradictory to” the human condition. It is not, in any event, the kind of thing that can be shared across generations. Subsequent generations lack sovereignty to the precise degree that they are bound by the decisions of their predecessors. It is no answer to say that contemporary citizens participate in the sovereignty of a whole, transgenerational people. To paraphrase de Tocqueville, later generations are not free because they are not entirely equal, and they are not equal because they are not entirely free.

Where “sovereignty” is a metaphysical concept that transcends time, recognition is an act …

Neuregulin1 (Nrg1) signaling is critical for neuronal development and function from fate specification to synaptic plasticity. Type III Nrg1 is a synaptic protein which engages in bidirectional signaling with its receptor ErbB4. Forward signaling engages ErbB4 phosphorylation, whereas back signaling engages two known mechanisms: (1) local axonal PI3K-AKT signaling and (2) cleavage by γ-secretase resulting in cytosolic release of the intracellular domain (ICD), which can traffic to the nucleus (Bao et al., 2003; Hancock et al., 2008). To dissect the contribution of these alternate signaling strategies to neuronal development, we generated a transgenic mouse with a missense mutation (V
