Abstract

The combined study of Ochodaeus montanus Fuente, 1912 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Ochodaeidae) type material and recently collected specimens from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula provided evidence for the description of new specific morphological characters, and to clarify recurring mistakes present in the literature. A comparative study between O. montanus and its closest representative, O. inermis Reitter, 1892, was completed. An updated distribution map of O. montanus as well as a bilingual identification key for the four taxa occurring within the Iberian Peninsula is given.

Statues In Plutarch's Lives, Donald Lateiner Oct 2024

Statues In Plutarch's Lives, Donald Lateiner

New England Classical Journal

This article surveys where Plutarch mentions statues in the Lives and how they enrich his biographies. He alludes to statues in introductions, after death in conclusions, and in synkriseis. 1] They describe his subjects’ appearance. 2] They expressed community appreciation. 3] After some Hellenic and Roman honorands lost favor or were assassinated, their images suffered destruction. 4] Several communities compensated victims for ignominy by replacing their statues. 5] Several subjects erected statues as propaganda. 6] Several “heroes” address other men’s statues. 7] Statues or their absence counterpoint deaths and funerals. 8] Statues ironically embody excessive ambition. 9] Subsequent ancient …

Analyzing The Catfish And Trout Competitiveness Trends And Potential Trade Within The Us And Global Aquaculture Industry: A Gravity Model Approach, Diana Marisol Amaya Discua

LSU Master's Theses

The United States is one of the major seafood product importers in the world. Despite the increases in global seafood and aquaculture consumption over the past decades, there is limited information on the trade dynamics of this sector. To address this gap, this study uses an augmented gravity model to evaluate the factors that have influenced catfish and trout imports into the United States. The analysis was conducted using the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator to address issues of heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, and zero trade flows. The results highlight the importance of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and exchange rates in …

Changes In Morphology, Phenology, Demography Of Several Avian Species Over 18 Years At A Restored Grassland, Ashley Mcmahon, Katie Stumpf, Charlie Muise Oct 2024

Changes In Morphology, Phenology, Demography Of Several Avian Species Over 18 Years At A Restored Grassland, Ashley Mcmahon, Katie Stumpf, Charlie Muise

Biology Theses

In response to a changing climate and habitat loss, avian species are displaying changes in body size, migration phenology, and demography. Species have often adhered to Allen’s and Bergmann’s rules, displaying increased wing length and decreased body mass, respectively, over time in response to higher temperatures. Additionally, climate change has resulted in earlier spring migration and depending on species, either earlier or later fall migration. Finally, species affected by habitat loss often display male-skewed sex ratios and juvenile skewed age ratios. Our goal was to determine how 1) body size, 2) migration phenology, and 3) demography have changed for grassland …

New Materialism And Public Lands: Opportunities For Human And Nonhuman Interactions At Petroglyph National Monument, Madilynn M. Nolen Oct 2024

New Materialism And Public Lands: Opportunities For Human And Nonhuman Interactions At Petroglyph National Monument, Madilynn M. Nolen

Geography ETDs

Petroglyph National Monument (PETR) resides at the intersection of geology, urban development, and environmental preservation. As the site of convergence for these complex systems, this National Park site is an example of what kinds of interactions occur between humans and nonhumans and how these interactions mediate our broader understanding of material world. This project utilizes literature from more-than-human geographies and new materialism to examine how these interactions inform the management strategies of PETR. Through the interviews of 15 Volunteers-in-Parks and a focus group of five PETR employees, this project investigates what nonhuman entities are present on and around the monument, …

Insects All Around Us: A Four-Session Bug Club Lesson Plan For Grades 3-5 Covering The Biology And Importance Of Insects In Nebraska, Carolyn Almonte Oct 2024

Insects All Around Us: A Four-Session Bug Club Lesson Plan For Grades 3-5 Covering The Biology And Importance Of Insects In Nebraska, Carolyn Almonte

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Insects are often overlooked in science curricula when talking about conservation due to the surrounding fear and disgust regarding insects. This disgust not only permeates the mindsets of students, but also teachers, which leads to a hesitance to incorporate an insect-based curriculum or club into a lesson. In response to this, I have created a four-session club curriculum that can be used across four two hour long sessions spread out across four weeks. The goals of this club are: to explain the key traits of insects and arthropods, differentiating the two groups; to explain and define the basic stages of …

Twenty Years Of Microplastic Pollution Research—What Have We Learned?, Richard C. Thompson, Winnie Courtene-Jones, Julien Boucher, Sabine Pahl, Karen Raubenheimer, Albert A. Koelmans

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Twenty years after the first publication that used the term microplastic, we review current understanding, refine definitions, and consider future prospects. Microplastics arise from multiple sources, including tires, textiles, cosmetics, paint, and the fragmentation of larger items. They are widely distributed throughout the natural environment, with evidence of harm at multiple levels of biological organization. They are pervasive in food and drink and have been detected throughout the human body, with emerging evidence of negative effects. Environmental contamination could double by 2040, and wide-scale harm has been predicted. Public concern is increasing, and diverse measures to address microplastic pollution are …

An Autonomous Implantable Device For The Prevention Of Death From Opioid Overdose, Joanna L Ciatti, Victoria E Brings, Brian Ruyle, Michael R Talcott, Prashant Gupta, Richard A Slivicki, Nicolas Massaly, Michael C Montana, Mitchell Pet, Jose A Morón, Robert W Gereau, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Opioid overdose accounts for nearly 75,000 deaths per year in the United States, now a leading cause of mortality among young people aged 18 to 45 years. At overdose levels, opioid-induced respiratory depression becomes fatal without the administration of naloxone within minutes. Currently, overdose survival relies on bystander intervention, requiring a nearby person to find the overdosed individual and have immediate access to naloxone to administer. To circumvent the bystander requirement, we developed the Naloximeter: a class of life-saving implantable devices that autonomously detect and treat overdose while simultaneously contacting first responders. We present three Naloximeter platforms, for fundamental research …

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire Oct 2024

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire

Studia Antiqua

Exodus 28 and 39 contain a detailed description of the clothing God instructed to be made and worn by Israelite priests. In this essay, sacred clothing will be understood through the lens of ritual studies, characterizing clothing with a sense of liminality that defines and endows the human wearer with identity and power. The social meanings and implications of the high priest’s dress will be reconstructed by engaging in sensory criticism, drawing upon insights from the greater eastern Mediterranean world. Given the ancient world’s unique conception of a permeable body, ritual clothing had the ability to imbue the wearer with …

The Carnivalesque And The Carmel Competition In 1 Kings 18, Paul Bryner Oct 2024

The Carnivalesque And The Carmel Competition In 1 Kings 18, Paul Bryner

Studia Antiqua

While humor is a difficult feature to identify in the Bible, the concept of the “carnivalesque”—a form of literary humor with sociological implications, coined by Mikhail Bakhtin — is much easier to apply. I argue for the presence of carnivalesque themes in the Elijah narrative of 1 Kings 18 which give a subtle, implicit social commentary on Israelite society.

An Evaluation Of The Safety Of Half-Dose Direct Oral Anticoagulants Following Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Pilot Study., Harrison A Patrizio, Rex W Lutz, Stephanie A Kwan, Adam Lencer, Gregory K Deirmengian

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Background Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients on preoperative anticoagulation therapy present a challenge for adult reconstruction surgeons. The goal in managing such patients is to limit bleeding complications associated with administering the medications while preventing medical complications from withholding them. At our institution, we began a protocol in 2017 that utilizes a half-dose direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) regimen for one week followed by resuming of the full-dose regimen in select patients who underwent TJA. This study investigated the 90-day safety profile associated with this protocol compared to previous literature. Methodology A retrospective review of 898 patients from a single institution …

Faculty Research 2024

Mutations in SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) have expanded the viral host range beyond primates, and a few other mammals, to mice, affording the opportunity to exploit genetically diverse mouse panels to model the broad spectrum of responses to infection in patient populations. Here we surveyed responses to VOC infection in genetically diverse Collaborative Cross (CC) founder strains. Infection of wild-derived CC founder strains produced a broad range of viral burden, disease susceptibility and survival, whereas most other strains were resistant to disease despite measurable lung viral titers. In particular, CAST/EiJ, a wild-derived strain, developed high lung viral burdens, more …
