How Many Tiny Snails? Circumscription Of Three Species Of Pyrgulopsis (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Hydrobiidae)In Nevada Mountain Springs, Trenton Meadows
Theses and Dissertations
The springsnail genus Pyrgulopsis is one of the most diverse groups of freshwater gastropods in North America (Hershler, 2014), with many species displaying high levels of endemism (Hurt, 2003). This study attempts to circumscribe three putative species of springsnails: Pyrgulopsis serrata, Pyrgulopsis marcida, and a newly identified clade, referred to as Lineage C, from the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada, USA and nearby springs. Using an integrative taxonomic approach, we combined morphological, anatomical, and molecular data to examine species boundaries and evolutionary relationships.
Many lines of evidence were considered to determine species boundaries. Phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial …
Feasibility Study On Microwave Glucose Level Monitoring, Ricardo Cepeda
Feasibility Study On Microwave Glucose Level Monitoring, Ricardo Cepeda
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes management heavily relies on regular blood glucose monitoring, which traditionally involves invasive techniques. In recent years, significant research has been directed towards developing non-invasive glucose monitoring methods, particularly using electromagnetic waves. This study explores the feasibility of detecting blood glucose levels non-invasively by measuring the resonant frequency shifts of an antenna, influenced by the dielectric properties of blood. Microwave measurement techniques have garnered attention due to their ability to safely penetrate human tissue and detect biochemical markers like glucose. While previous studies have established a link between glucose concentration and dielectric properties, many techniques suffer from poor sensitivity or …

The retina is an important portion of the eye because images of it are used by doctors to diagnose numerous eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. Indeed, segmented retinal imaging is a powerful tool for detecting unusual growths in the eye area as well as determining the size and structure of the optic disc. The combination of digital image processing and deep learning techniques enables the development of automated approaches for detecting glaucoma. Within this framework, the objective of this study is to achieve prompt detection of glaucoma by utilizing a DenseNet-121 Network in conjunction with texture …
Directivity Improvement Of A Broad-Beam Patch Antenna By Means Of A Flat Metamaterial Lens, Tyler Midas
Directivity Improvement Of A Broad-Beam Patch Antenna By Means Of A Flat Metamaterial Lens, Tyler Midas
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis demonstrates the development of a flat metamaterial lens intended to enhance antenna directivity in RF applications. Development and evaluation was performed with ANSYS HFSS, where a theoretical convex lens model was developed and used as a basis for unit cell refractive indices of the metamaterial lens. The unit cell demonstrated in this study leverages the properties of a nested split-ring resonator merged with a center column. Adjusting the rings allow for refractive index optimization and effective beam focusing. The work presented also provides a 2x2 antenna array with a feed network, which enables the future work of bench …
Evaluating Uas As A Tool For Improving Elk Population Counts In A Suburban Forested Area Of North Central Colorado, Michael Wussow
Evaluating Uas As A Tool For Improving Elk Population Counts In A Suburban Forested Area Of North Central Colorado, Michael Wussow
Theses and Dissertations
For decades, wildlife researchers have taken advantage of an aerial perspective for performing population counts because of challenges associated with ground observations. Due to advances in aviation technology and regulations, unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) have become increasingly available for wildlife population monitoring in addition to manned aircraft, with success largely dependent on the species, their habitat, and UAS utilized. This study compares a currently accepted method of counting North American elk (ground/spotting scope counts) to a novel method (UAS) to evaluate if a commercial-off-the-shelf quadcopter (COTS) UAS equipped with zoom-capable RGB cameras would be an acceptable tool for counting elk …

Researching Chlorophyll-Α Levels In Freshwater Lakes To Understand The Environmental State Of The Turtle Mountains Using Ndci Through Remote Sensing Techniques, Elliot Quinn Peltier
Theses and Dissertations
Chlorophyll α is one of the main indicators of water quality. Increasing levels have various triggers such as agricultural runoff, wastewater from treatment plants, sewage, and humus. Addressing chlorophyll α is crucial since high concentrations are precursors to eutrophication and are hazardous to human health. The Turtle Mountains in North Dakota and Manitoba is an island forest laden with lakes and trees. However, the noticeable extent of agricultural surface on the United States side of the border has made obvious the disintegration of forested area. Also, a lack of information and studies do not allow anyone to comprehend the level …

Using Problematic Sexual Behaviors And The Developmental Life Course Model To Predict Criminal Justice Involvement And Psychopathology By Early Adulthood, Amanda Schwartz
Theses and Dissertations
The developmental life course (DLC) model explains risk factors and developmental patterns among juveniles who have committed more than one sexual offense by considering the impact of major life events, experiences, and risk and protective factors throughout various developmental stages. Using an archival longitudinal dataset, the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN), this study applied the DLC model to explore the relationship between gender and onset and persistence of problematic sexual behaviors (PSBs) in childhood and adolescence with criminal justice involvement and psychopathology by early adulthood (N = 330, 46% male, M = 18.26 years) after controlling for …

Direct K+ And Ag+ Ion-Exchanged Into Sapo-34 Prepared Via Microwave Irradiation And Its Performance In Mto, Mazin Jasim Mohammed, Najwa Saber Majeed
Baghdad Science Journal
Recently, light olefins became an important material for industrials, especially plastics. High olefins production cost from oil sources, made the researchers look for other methods. Methanol conversion to olefins over SAPOs was an excellent alternative. SAPO-34 molecular sieve is considered a proper catalyst used in this field. For this purpose, SAPO-34 with morpholine template was prepared under microwave irradiation. K and Ag ions were incorporated successfully by ion exchange method. The samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, BET, and TGA techniques. XRD showed higher crystallinity of K-SAPO-34 and smaller crystallite size than Ag-SAPO-34. The SEM and EDX analysis …
Polarimetry Terahertz Imaging Of Human Breast Cancer Surgical Specimens, Nikita Gurjar, Keith Bailey, Magda O. El-Shenawee
Polarimetry Terahertz Imaging Of Human Breast Cancer Surgical Specimens, Nikita Gurjar, Keith Bailey, Magda O. El-Shenawee
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Purpose
We investigate terahertz (THz) polarimetry imaging of seven human breast cancer surgical specimens. The goal is to enhance image contrast between adjacent tissue types of cancer, healthy collagen, and fat in excised breast tumors. Based on the biological perception of random growth of cancer and invasion of surrounding healthy tissues in the breast, we hypothesize that cancerous cells interact with the THz electric field in a different manner compared with healthy cells. This difference can be best captured using multiple polarizations instead of single polarization.
Approach
Time domain pulsed signals are experimentally collected from each pixel of the specimen …

Sorgoleone (Lipophilic Benzoquinones) Levels In The Root Exudates Of Elite Sorghum [Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench] Cultivars, Suleica J. Lee
All Theses
Nitrogen loss from cropping systems is significant and is estimated at more than 50% of the amounts applied. Root exudates of certain plant species including sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] contain sorgoleone which can reduce nitrification and nitrogen loss through biological nitrification inhibition (BNI). Therefore, the goal of this study was to screen selected elite sorghum germplasm comprising hybrids and parents to determine the best sorgoleone secreting cultivars. The hypothesis was that nitrogen loss from croplands could be curbed through exploring sorghum BNI traits. Screening of the cultivars selected was done using an established sorghum culture and extraction pipeline that …
The New Frontier Of Guidance Reviewability, Tomás Rios
The New Frontier Of Guidance Reviewability, Tomás Rios
Michigan Law Review
In the administrative context, agency actions must be “final” to trigger judicial review. The Supreme Court’s opinions in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers v. Hawkes Co. marked an important shift in finality doctrine by emphasizing that the calculus of whether agency guidance is “final” may turn on its practical effects. For decades, agency guidance rarely warranted judicial review because it is not legally binding and, thus, not final. But the advent of the Sackett-Hawkes pragmatic analysis has changed the landscape, raising particular concerns for agencies relying on promulgating guidance documents to “softly” regulate. This …
Debunking Criminal Restitution, Lula A. Hagos
Debunking Criminal Restitution, Lula A. Hagos
Michigan Law Review
Criminal restitution—the money paid by a defendant to a victim—is often overlooked amidst growing scholarly consensus about the adverse impact of criminal court fines and fees. Restitution receives less attention because it is perceived as a fair and unobjectionable sanction with legitimate goals, while fines and fees are now widely condemned as primarily serving as a funding source for local and state governments. Consequently, the animated and extensive discourse around financial punishment largely excludes criminal restitution.
Though criminal restitution may appear to have legitimate penological purposes, it serves to perpetually punish defendants who are poor—the vast majority of those in …

Marriage, Courts, And Substantive Equality: A Transformative Interpretation, Kushagr Bakshi
Michigan Law Review
Courts in various jurisdictions have relied on either the right to privacy or the right to equality to offer protections to the LGBTQ+ community. The use of different rights to achieve similar ends may seem like an empty distinction. But the differences in the nature and function of each right evince the differences in the construction of rights across jurisdictions. In the traditional liberal method of conceptualizing rights, privacy is typically a negative right, restricting the state from interfering in intimate relationships between individuals. Courts operating within a transformative framework of rights interpretation, however, rely on the positive right to …
The Reservoir Geomechanics And Production Effects On Permafrost Stability During Polymer Eor, Shane S. Namie
The Reservoir Geomechanics And Production Effects On Permafrost Stability During Polymer Eor, Shane S. Namie
Theses and Dissertations
The North Slope of Alaska (ANS) contains an estimated 40 billion barrels of heavy oil in relatively shallow formations (984 to 1,969 ft / 304 to 600 m) within the Prudhoe Bay Unit (PBU), Milne Point Unit (MPU) and Kuparuk River Unit (KRU). Extracting this resource presents unique challenges, especially when hydrocarbon-bearing zones are near the permafrost. Research on tertiary recovery processes in these shallow zones is limited, with prior studies indicating minor permafrost thawing and subsidence over 30 to 40 years but lacking a numerical simulation model supported by laboratory data. This study investigates the feasibility of an enhanced oil …
The Role Of Disgust In Films: Disgust As An Aesthetically Appreciable Emotion That Enhances The Film’S Other Emotional Effects, Yunyi Zhu
Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The goal of this paper is to address the questions: what is the role of disgust in films, or what makes people appreciate a film’s disgusting contents, given that disgust is unpleasant to experience? The films to which I am referring are audiovisual artworks, including both TV shows and movies, that arouse the emotion of disgust and typically have contents that are gory or gross, yet despite their disgusting contents, these films have as a primary goal to present a narrative or an experience rather than merely to disgust or disturb their audiences. This includes various genres of films, from …

Use Of Electrocardiogram To Evaluate Welfare Of Laying Hens And Chicks During Different Life Stages And Events, Ashley Elizabeth Bigge
Use Of Electrocardiogram To Evaluate Welfare Of Laying Hens And Chicks During Different Life Stages And Events, Ashley Elizabeth Bigge
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Three separate studies were conducted to evaluate the welfare of laying hens and chicks during different life stages. The stress responses of mature laying hens in two different scenarios were also investigated. All three studies utilized the electrocardiogram (ECG) as the chosen tool for data collection. Study 1 examined the startle response, prompted by an acute stressor that created sudden movement and noise, in White and Brown Leghorn hens housed in either cages or aviaries. The presence of a chronic stressor, a 23-hour feed failure, was also assessed as a factor. These hens had been surgically implanted with wireless ECG …
Examining Factors Of Variance In Energy Metabolism Of Dairy Cattle, Addison Lee Carroll
Examining Factors Of Variance In Energy Metabolism Of Dairy Cattle, Addison Lee Carroll
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Variation is thought to occur in the use of dietary energy for production in dairy cattle. First, variance can be observed when new methane mitigation strategies are fed resulting in increased H2 output potentially resulting in downstream effects on estimates heat production via the Brouwer (1965) equation. Therefore, in chapter 3 a review was created to systematically describe the mathematics and theory behind the Brouwer equation, and rederive a heat production equation to integrate H2 production. Results indicate heat production using the classical Brouwer equation (1965) relative to the rederived equation resulted in an overestimation of heat production …

Microbiome Variation In Production Phenotypes And The Role Of Colonization History In Microbiome Establishment, Seidu Adams
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Ruminant-based agriculture is expected to continue to be a major contributor to food security to feed the growing population. At the heart of nutrient degradation of complex organic matter within the rumen are its microbes. These microbes can convert otherwise unusable organic matter into usable protein and energy and can provide up to 50% of the animal’s protein needs and up to 70% of the energy needs. The microbial functional capacity within the rumen determines the nutrients utilized and the end products of fermentation. However, our understanding of microbial functional capacity within the rumen and factors that influence the rumen …

Motivated By Hope: Why We Strive For The Improbable, Varkey K. Titus Jr.
Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Some of the most rewarding actions we take in life are difficult. The outcomes of these actions are surrounded by uncertainty, and what relevant data is available indicates a high probability of failure. Current philosophical work proposes that hope can resolve the puzzle of how people can rationally choose to engage in difficult actions, but this work constrains hope’s motivational role to actions whose successful outcomes reside within the realm of an individual’s own agency. I expand the explanatory role of hope motivating action to include cases whose outcomes depend on some combination of factors internal and external to the …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 33. The Story In Evolution., Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) is best known for his independent formulation of the principle of natural selection. In this work I first review my understanding of Wallace’s intellectual development on this subject, including the notion that he had no model for the evolution of higher consciousness as of his first treatment of natural selection in 1858. This leads to some conclusions about his approach to the subject, and links to parallel ideas inherent in the philosophy of Baruch de Spinoza (1632-1677).
Heat Acclimated Algae Improves Heat Tolerance And Longevity In Daphnia, Ashit Dutta
Heat Acclimated Algae Improves Heat Tolerance And Longevity In Daphnia, Ashit Dutta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Xenohormesis suggests that consuming stressed food provides physiological adaptation to the consumer for similar stresses. To evaluate this, Daphnia magna was provided with heat-stressed Nannochloropsis limnetica grown at 25℃ whereas the control group was provided Nannochloropsis limnetica grown at 12℃. In the heat tolerance experiment, Daphnia kept at 28℃ and 20℃ while consuming 25℃ algae had significantly higher heat tolerance compared to the control. Additionally, in stressed conditions, Daphnia consuming 25℃-grown food had significantly higher lifespan compared to the control. Next, Daphnia consuming 25℃-grown algae had significantly higher levels of antioxidants which could explain the lifespan extension. Finally, in fatty …

The study of the senile osteoporosis in men still lags significantly behind that in women. The changes of protein molecule levels and their relationships with bone loss remain poorly understood. In the present study, we used C57BL/6J male mice at ages from 3 to 24 mo to delineate the mechanisms of aging effects on bone loss. We used the microcomputed tomography, mechanical testing, histomorphometry assays, and detection of serum levels of undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOcn) and carboxylated osteocalcin (cOcn) to assess bone mass changes and their relationships with the ratios of ucOcn-to-cOcn in mice from different age groups. The results showed …
