Waves Of Change: A Call To Federally Safeguard Against Climate-Driven Floods, Trevor Johnson
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The average flood event in the United States costs Americans $4.7 billion. Flood events have become more frequent, widespread, and of longer duration due to climate change. The United States attempts to combat the emerging threat of flooding through federal and private insurance programs. Still, as flooding risk rises, property owners are burdened by the responsibility to assess and prepare for these risks independently since standard homeowners’ and renters’ insurance does not cover flood damage under any circumstances in the United States. Rural communities are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to economic foundations that are intricately …

Detecting Multiple Paternity In Mule Deer Using Kinship Values, Madeline K. Martin, Brock Mcmillan, Paul Frandsen, Sydney Lamb, Randy Larsen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Multiple paternity is an ecological phenomenon that plays an important role in reproductive dynamics and population genetics; the presence and rate of multiple paternity can shed light on reproductive behavior and the potential genetic effects of human management. Previous methods have estimated multiple paternity using genetic markers such as microsatellites, and require DNA from both parents and their offspring. However, evolving genomic technology promotes use of alternative genomic methods and acquiring paternal DNA from free-ranging animals is often difficult or impossible. We propose kinship values derived from single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as a tool to predict multiple paternity. Calculating kinship values …

Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are cytochrome P450-epoxygenase-derived metabolites of arachidonic acid that act as endogenous signaling molecules in multiple biological systems, including their controversial effects on pain, including reports of the central analgesic effect and its action in inducing pain. The aim of this study was to verify the peripheral antinociceptive effect of EETs and the effect of the selective EET receptor antagonist, 14,15-EEZE, on this antinociception. The nociceptive threshold was determined by paw pressure withdrawal, and hyperalgesia was induced by intraplantar injection of PGE2 to evaluate the effect of EETs administration. EETs (5,6-, 8,9-, 11,12-, and 14,15-EET) were administered intraplantarly …

Decoding cellular state transitions is crucial for understanding complex biological processes in development and disease. While recent advancements in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) offer insights into cellular trajectories, existing tools primarily study expressional rather than regulatory state shifts. We present CellTran, a statistical approach utilizing paired-gene expression correlations to detect transition cells from scRNA-seq data without explicitly resolving gene regulatory networks. Applying our approach to various contexts, including tissue regeneration, embryonic development, preinvasive lesions, and humoral responses post-vaccination, reveals transition cells and their distinct gene expression profiles. Our study sheds light on the underlying molecular mechanisms driving cellular state transitions, …

Short-Term Territoriality: The Influence Of Time And Gender On Territorial Behavior, Audra Kooi, Celia Vander Woude, Elijah Vander Woude
Student Work
Territoriality, the behavior of claiming and defending space or objects, has been widely studied in both animal and human contexts, but most research focuses on long-term patterns. Forty-seven undergraduate students were instructed to sit and watch videos of varying lengths. After leaving the room, participants were instructed to sit again, and their seat choices were recorded to assess territorial behavior, measured by displacement. Results showed a strong preference for returning to the same seat, which suggests territorial behavior is not exclusively established in the long term but can emerge within a few minutes.
The Power Of Love And Authenticity: Building Resistance In The World, Arianna Silva
The Power Of Love And Authenticity: Building Resistance In The World, Arianna Silva
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Love is often described as something we “need,” perhaps because of its deep connection to the authenticity of self. Authenticity, in existentialist terms, is achieved when we discover a true sense of purpose and meaning—one that we create for ourselves. As existentialism posits that existence precedes essence. Thus,we are responsible for shaping who we are and crafting our own path in life. The relationship between love and authenticity is transformative, helping us resist oppressive systems by fostering individuality and preventing homogenization. This individuality makes it harder for authoritarian regimes to control us, as we no longer conform to societal norms …

Cerebellar nuclei (CN) neurons serve as the primary output of the cerebellum and originate from the cerebellar primordium at early stages of cerebellar development. These neurons are diverse, integrating information from the cerebellar cortex and relaying it to various brain regions. Employing various methodologies, we have characterized a specific subset of CN neurons that do not originate from the rhombic lip or ventricular zone of the cerebellar primordium. Embryos were collected at early stages of development and processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC), western blotting, in situ hybridization (ISH), embryonic culture, DiI labeling, and flow cytometry analysis (FCM). Our findings indicate that …

Cancers frequently co-opt lineage-specific transcription factors (TF) utilized in normal development to sustain proliferation. However, the effects of these TFs on tumor development depend considerably on where in the genome they bind. A new article by Taylor and colleagues expands on previously developed diamidine compounds that obstruct the DNA binding sites of the pioneer TF PU.1 (SPI1) in acute myeloid leukemia. Immobilization and sequencing of genomic DNA targeted by these compounds revealed that these inhibitors alter the genomic binding patterns of PU.1. The authors report that their strategy constrains the genomic binding preferences of PU.1, leading to redistribution of PU.1 …

We present a patient with human immunodeficiency virus who developed multiple painful lesions that previously in the past had speciated as Cryptococcus neoformans cutaneously, and in the lung. Despite induction therapy for presumed re-infection, the patient did not improve so a biopsy was performed and this was speciated as Mycobacterium avium complex, with final diagnosis being disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex. This case highlights the importance of considering a broad differential diagnosis for any new lesions regardless of prior culture data.

The scaffolding function of receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) confers intrinsic and extrinsic resistance to immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs) and emerges as a promising target for improving cancer immunotherapies. To address the challenge posed by a poorly defined binding pocket within the intermediate domain of RIPK1, here we harness proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) technology to develop a RIPK1 degrader, LD4172. LD4172 exhibits potent and selective RIPK1 degradation both in vitro and in vivo. Degradation of RIPK1 by LD4172 triggers immunogenic cell death, enhances tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte responses, and sensitizes tumors to anti-PD1 therapy in female C57BL/6J mice. This work reports …

Pediatric Flecainide Pharmacogenomics: A Roadmap To Delivering Precision-Based Care To Pediatrics Arrhythmias., Ronald Palmen, Mollie Walton, Jonathan B. Wagner
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Flecainide acetate is a Class 1c anti-arrhythmic with a potent sodium voltage gated channel blockade which is utilized for the second-line treatment of tachyarrhythmias in children and adults. Given its narrow therapeutic index, the individualization of drug therapy is of utmost importance for clinicians. Despite efforts to improve anti-arrhythmic drug therapy, there remain knowledge gaps regarding the impact of variation in the genes relevant to flecainide's disposition and response. This variability is compounded in developing children whose drug disposition and response pathways may remain immature. The purpose of this comprehensive review is to outline flecainide's disposition and response pathways while …

Crossing Borders: Philippine Activist Theater And Martial Law, Bonifacio P. Ilagan
Kritika Kultura
Positing theater as political, this paper intends to locate activist theater in the context of the Philippine cultural setting and political milieu on the eve of the Martial Law declaration in 1972. It shall illustrate why this kind of theater, frowned upon by some sectors in the artistic community, had taken unto itself the task of redefining the stage and employing it in a political mass movement that ultimately blazed a trail in Philippine theater and also challenged the socioeconomic structures of society. This paper integrates the theory and practice of the activist theater in the Philippines in the late …

Kritika Kultura
The paper studies Salvador P. Lopez’s position as a secular critic by analyzing his milieu during the Commonwealth period, criticism of his collection Literature and Society, and the content of essays from the same collection in light of the debate between “art for art’s sake” and proletarian literature. The theoretical framework used is Edward Said’s secular criticism.
Intellectual Portrait Gallery: Agusto Fauni Espiritu's Five Faces Of Exile, Gerald Burns
Intellectual Portrait Gallery: Agusto Fauni Espiritu's Five Faces Of Exile, Gerald Burns
Kritika Kultura
Espiritu writes a book which may be described as a “collective intellectual biography” of five figures in Philippine letters whose lives and texts were influenced by their expatriation in America: Carlos P. Romulo, Carlos Bulosan, Jose Garcia Villa, N.V.M. Gonzalez, and Bienvenido Santos. With a biographer’s touch, Espiritu identifies the themes that are more or less common and played out differently among them: performativity, ambivalence, nationalism in their self-representation, cultural hybridity, and patronage relations—leading to what may be called a genuine “transnational” perspective for Asian American intellectual history. However, his use of other big terms such as “exile,” “nation,” “Filipino” …

Ang Mga Pinagdaanang Buhay Ng Ibong Adarna: Narrativity And Ideology In The Adarna's Corrido And Filmic Versions, Francisco Benitez
Kritika Kultura
Through a consideration of narrativity, the paper explores different structures of recognition in the corrido and 1941 filmic versions of the Ibong Adarna. The paper compares the chapbook’s context and narrative techniques with that of the film’s capacity to address an audience and creating subject-forms. It explores the applicability of James Siegel’s concept of the lingua franca’s communicative power to the Philippine situation, and suggests that different textual technologies contain different though overlapping grammars that affect their ideological functions.

American Globality And The Us Prison Regime: State Violence And White Supremacy From Abu Ghraib To Stockton To Bagong Diwa, Dylan Rodriguez
Kritika Kultura
What do we make of the abiding significance of state-sanctioned human captivity and imprisonment on a massive, unprecedented scale as a primary American modality of civilization? Democracy? Modernity and (postmodern) Nation-building? The American prison intertwines as it animates two structural logics: 1) white supremacy as a historical modality of social (dis)organization, and 2) the circulation, militarization, and mobilization of allegedly local or domestic US social formations across global geographies, including and beyond the Philippines. This paper considers the formation of the United States prison industrial complex as an epochal global regime that is integral to the fabric of an incipient …

Enemies And Friends: A Consideration Of The Burnham Kidnapping, Gerald T. Burns
Kritika Kultura
The relationships between the political and the spiritual, hostage-taker and victim, friends and enemies, the US and the Philippines are shaped and contested in the light of journalistic accounts of the Burnhams’ hostage crisis in 2001, and in particular Gracia Burnham’s reconstruction of it in her memoir. The following four distinct but related contexts are used as lens to explore the binarisms: 1) the psychosocial dynamics and literary traditions of captivity; 2) what used to be billed the “special” but has more recently and perhaps more accurately been called the “entangled” relationship between the United States and the Philippines; 3) …
