“Give The People What They Want”: Bodies On Display In Marlene Van Niekerk’S Triomf, Lara Buxbaum
“Give The People What They Want”: Bodies On Display In Marlene Van Niekerk’S Triomf, Lara Buxbaum
Kritika Kultura
Marlene van Niekerk’s Triomf has attained both literary acclaim and notoriety since it was first published in Afrikaans in 1994 (English translation 1999). This darkly comic novel is set at the dawn of the democratic election and as such, the fictional context mirrors the historical moment in which it was published. The novel relates the misadventures of the incestuous and indigent Afrikaans family, the Benades, whose grotesque bodies are described in minute detail. The paper examines the reason for this visceral corporeality in the context of Louise Bethlehem’s classification of the post-apartheid literary canon as one “in which the abject …
Dark Humor: Satire, The Baroque, And The Carnivalesque In Patricia Schonstein’S Banquet At Brabazan And Ingrid Winterbach’S The Elusive Moth, Heather Acott
Kritika Kultura
Both Patricia Schonstein’s Banquet at Brabazan and Ingrid Winterbach’s The Elusive Moth contain an element of baroque fantasy, and in Schonstein’s case the makings of a contemporary satire. They also exhibit the tension between the comic and the tragic, the city and the platteland, between flights of imagination and the magnetic pull of a dark social realism that both underpins and, in Schonstein’s case, sometimes undermines the work. This paper investigates the use of humor in writing against the grain of apartheid, and how successful these writers are at integrating history in a dynamic fiction. Published respectively in 1991 (Winterbach) …
Living In Disgrace Without Term, Peter Horn
Living In Disgrace Without Term, Peter Horn
Kritika Kultura
This paper provides a reading of J.M. Coetzee’s novel Disgrace. Professor David Lurie, formerly professor of modern languages, then of communication, has seduced one of his students in the Romantics class, and was dismissed by the university after a disciplinary hearing where he refuses to defend himself against the charges. He pleads guilty, denying the right of the university to judge the morality of his conduct. Later he states: “I became a servant of Eros” and “I am not prepared to be reformed. I want to go on being myself.” When asked by his daughter to make his case, Lurie …

Coetzee In And Out Of Cape Town, Imraan Coovadia
Kritika Kultura
This paper is an attempt to see J.M. Coetzee’s emigration from South Africa to Australia as a logical step within his career, and to understand Coetzee’s relationship with the city and university of Cape Town. It also tries to set out the nature of Coetzee’s self-assertion and self-canonization, and the interplay between Coetzee and the Coetzeean critics.
Letting It Flow: A Phenomenology Of Water In The Age Of Modern Technology, Remmon E. Barbaza
Letting It Flow: A Phenomenology Of Water In The Age Of Modern Technology, Remmon E. Barbaza
Kritika Kultura
This essay seeks to initiate a phenomenology of water in the age of modern technology within a Heideggerian framework. Insofar as it holds sway as the essence of modern technology, Ge-stell (enframing) blocks the appearance of water as water. Instead, like most other “natural resources,” water appears as the resource that is extracted, manipulated, and made readily available for universal distribution and instant consumption, but detached from its origin in earth and sky. A disruption in the handiness of water, however, such as is occasioned by water shortage or massive flooding, offers the possibility of inviting human beings to recover …
Transformative Subjects: Discussions Of Nahualismo In Mylan Nguyễn’S Visual Art And Gloria Anzaldúa’S Writings, Sara Ishii-Bear
Transformative Subjects: Discussions Of Nahualismo In Mylan Nguyễn’S Visual Art And Gloria Anzaldúa’S Writings, Sara Ishii-Bear
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Mylan Nguyễn is a Dallas-based artist of Mexican and Vietnamese descent, who uses her multimedia practice, inclusive of ceramics, risograph printing, and illustration, to create whimsical worlds that are infused with symbolism and characterized by transformation. Inspired by the concepts of Nahualismo, a Nahuatl cultural practice that involves human to animal shapeshifting, Nguyễn’s works are populated by shape-shifting humans, animals, and nature. Drawing on a Nahualismo perspective that emphasizes healing and interconnectivity, Nguyễn’s understanding of the concept aligns with Gloria Anzaldúa’s discussion of nagualismo. Coupling Nahualismo and creativity, both Nguyễn and Anzaldúa invite audiences to bridge the divide between humans …

Feeling Inclusion: Becoming-With In Narrative Inquiry With An Inclusive Educator, Srikala Naraian, Maddie Neufeld, Yoomi Bae
Feeling Inclusion: Becoming-With In Narrative Inquiry With An Inclusive Educator, Srikala Naraian, Maddie Neufeld, Yoomi Bae
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
As narrative researchers, our inquiry into the ordinary work of teachers as they go about enacting inclusive pedagogies presumes that “a person’s experience must be listened to on its own terms first, without the presumption of deficit or flaw” (Clandinin & Rosiek 2007 50). We simultaneously turn away from a human-centered agency opening up to the possibilities for thinking, feeling, doing, and being that are evoked when we imagine the teacher as non-sovereign, intra-acting, and becoming among bodies of schooling. We move frictionally (Springgay & Truman 2018) through these frameworks as we attempt a narration of a teacher. Departing from …
Rhetorical Empathy In The Context Of Ontology, Lou Agosta
Rhetorical Empathy In The Context Of Ontology, Lou Agosta
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
This article aspires to elaborate the intersection of empathy and rhetoric with particular reference to empathic responsiveness. The argument regarding rhetorical empathy in the context of ontology proceeds through three phases. First, empathy is distinguished ontologically from a psychological mechanism. Second, the different aspects of empathy are exemplified. What brings forth empathy and makes it present? Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenology is usefully appropriated for an ontological account of empathy. The elaboration of the intersection of empathy and rhetoric goes beyond Heidegger; and the argument is made that empathy is incomplete without an empathic response. This empathic response is the opening in …
Possibility Above Actuality In Sartre’S Ontology Existential Thoughts On Education, James M. Magrini
Possibility Above Actuality In Sartre’S Ontology Existential Thoughts On Education, James M. Magrini
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
Systematic philosophies and practices of education, more often than not, tend to define the nature of the human being in terms of an immutable essence. For example, a manipulable organism within the learning environment or empty vessel to be filled with the knowledge it lacks. Systematic education, for the most part, is based on the uncritical acceptance of such antecedent ontological/biological conclusions regarding human being; views which leaves little room for the exploration and experience of human freedom. In response to this aforementioned problem, the pressing issue grounding this essay, which educators seeking to better serve their students should consider, …
Tiberias: Remains Of An Early Islamic Buff Ware Pottery Workshop, Yardenna Alexandre
Tiberias: Remains Of An Early Islamic Buff Ware Pottery Workshop, Yardenna Alexandre
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
A small four-square excavation carried out in an area outside the Ottoman city wall of Tiberias exposed the remains of an Early Islamic pottery workshop, built over earlier Byzantine-period walls. The building remains included parts of small rooms, pits and a tiled-floor installation. The overlying accumulations and thick ashy layers contained numerous sherds of Buff Ware vessels, including glazed bowls, partially fired plain vessels, decorated sherds, clay molds, kiln bars and basalt polishing tools. All these finds indicate that the site was an Abbasid–Fatimid period Buff Ware pottery workshop.

Ḥorbat Ṭurit (South): A Late Pottery Neolithic Ephemeral Site In The ‘Akko Plain, Dmitry Yegorov, Nuha Agha
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
An ephemeral prehistoric site was recovered south of the multi-period settlement of Ḥorbat Ṭurit, in the section between Yasif Junction and the ‘Akko East interchange. The site revealed an archaeological layer on top of sterile terra rosa soil. According to the analysis of the lithic assemblage, the site dates to the Late Pottery Neolithic period. Despite the limited excavated area and the absence of architectural or other constructed elements, the occupation level of the site yielded a significant number of flint artifacts, some pottery and stone tool fragments, as well as a small collection of faunal remains. The excavation results …
Kefar Veradim: An Intermediate Bronze Age Communal Burial Ground In Western Upper Galilee, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink
Kefar Veradim: An Intermediate Bronze Age Communal Burial Ground In Western Upper Galilee, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
Between 2016 and 2018, three brief salvage excavations conducted northwest of Kefar Veradim uncovered twenty rock-cut shafts leading into multiple burial chambers dating to the Intermediate Bronze Age, as well as five associated rock-cut basins of purportedly mortuary function. These tombs are part of a burial ground extending along a rocky spur overlooking Naḥal Yeḥiʻam. At least ten of the identified underground burial chambers, which were of two different types and originally sealed with flat stone slabs, had been robbed in antiquity. The remaining tombs could not be explored due to significant interference from the ultra-Orthodox burial society Atra Kadisha.
Gay Language: Defying The Structural Limits Of English Language In The Philippines, Norberto V. Casabal
Gay Language: Defying The Structural Limits Of English Language In The Philippines, Norberto V. Casabal
Kritika Kultura
Gay language has achieved a higher degree of acceptance in recent years in the Philippines. Both gays and non-gays can be heard uttering gay expressions. But the main role of gayspeak for gay people in the Philippines is to function as an “armor” to shield themselves from the chasm and the social stigma caused by gender differences. From a linguistic point of view, this paper not only describes the nature of this gay language and how expressions are coined; it also looks at how code mixing (gayspeak + English language) is made possible. This paper also examines how this code-mixing …
Always Moving Toward Justice, John Streamas
Always Moving Toward Justice, John Streamas
Kritika Kultura
This review-essay discovers in the poems of E. San Juan, Jr. an evolving and passionate engagement with exile and hope. To be an exile, especially a Filipino exile, is not to be a tourist, idly consuming and colonizing, but to absorb languages and histories that console and inspire. Drawn from the lessons of decades of exile, the poems and the concluding essay confront injustice—the ways, for instance, in which oppressors colonize even time and space—and also envision a future when revolution replaces rootlessness, when migrants come home.
The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez
The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez
Kritika Kultura
At the nexus of a prevailing Filipino-American discourse that celebrates the Filipino-American as a cooperative participant in the United States nation-building project sits an “unnamable violence” that masks the genocidal preconditions of “multiculturalist” white supremacy, to which this discourse unwittingly subscribes. The article explores the beginnings and development of this discourse, and the workings of American white supremacy in naturalizing relations of death between itself and its “others.” The article ends with a reflection on how “natural” disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo become means of legitimizing discourses that reinforce white invulnerability vis-à-vis disposability of non-white …

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy For Social Anxiety In Adolescents, April Fohrman
Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy For Social Anxiety In Adolescents, April Fohrman
Counselor Education Capstones
Exposure therapy has been around for decades and is still proving to be a robust, evidence-based treatment modality for several psychological issues. Imaginal exposure (vividly imagining a feared object, situation, or activity) and in vivo (directly experiencing the real fear or situation) are the traditional modes of exposure intervention. Although these treatments have shown that they work, they can also be time-consuming, expensive, or even impossible to replicate. A newer exposure therapy combines traditional imaginal therapy with in vivo therapy, but virtually.
This combination creates a middle ground where exposures to situations or fears can be increased or decreased virtually …
A Latent Profile Analysis Of High-Risk Children's Problematic Sexual Behavior, Claudia Campbell
A Latent Profile Analysis Of High-Risk Children's Problematic Sexual Behavior, Claudia Campbell
Dissertations
As research and intervention regarding children’s problematic sexual behavior (PSB) have broadly defined PSB, including all forms of developmentally atypical sexual behavior and all potential etiological factors, limited work to date has identified subtypes or unique patterns of PSB. The aim of the current study was to examine the presence of unique patterns of PSB and etiological factors among high-risk children utilizing latent profile analysis (LPA) based on children’s self-focused PSB, interpersonal PSB (IPSB), maltreatment factors, co-occurring symptoms, adaptive functioning, and family functioning. The present study included 689 8-year-old children (50.1% male, 50.2% Black) with potential PSB and their caregivers …

Profitable Improvement In Rangeland Conditions: Cunyu Station’S Achievement Of Synonymous Objectives In The Highly Variable Southern Rangelands Of Western Australia, Bradley Plunkett, Christophe D'Abbadie
Natural resources research reports
This case examines the objectives and management practices of Cunyu Station in Western Australia from 1990–2017. The owners’ objectives were to apply best practice knowledge augmented with localized management skills to rigorously adjust total grazing pressure (TGP) from all species (cattle, kangaroos, camels, horses, and donkeys) to levels commensurate with improved landscape conditions, minimized operating costs, and stable cash flows. A combination of infrastructure investment, feral herbivore control, use of the native apex predator (dingo) for kangaroo control, creation, and maintenance of around 18 months of ‘buffer’ pasture, and finishing 30-month-old steers on the Station were key management practices for …

Enhanced Glucose Production In Norepinephrine And Palmitate Stimulated Hepatocytes Following Endurance Training, Ken D. Sumida, Vera M. Lordan, Casey M. Donovan
Enhanced Glucose Production In Norepinephrine And Palmitate Stimulated Hepatocytes Following Endurance Training, Ken D. Sumida, Vera M. Lordan, Casey M. Donovan
Health Sciences and Kinesiology Faculty Articles
Enhanced hepatic gluconeogenesis plays an important role in exercise glucose homeostasis when hepatic glycogen stores are depleted. Livers from trained animals demonstrate greater rates of gluconeogenesis in the presence of elevated substrate with and without hormonal stimulation. Training has been reported to have a particularly profound impact on norepinephrine-stimulated gluconeogenesis, but this was only demonstrated in the presence of other gluconeogenic hormones. Here we reexamine the impact of endurance training on norepinephrine-stimulated gluconeogenesis in the absence of any other hormones. Isolated hepatocytes from trained and untrained rats were incubated in 6 mM lactate with various concentrations of norepinephrine (0 nM–20 …
Performance Prediction For Hub-Based Swarms, Puneet Jain
Performance Prediction For Hub-Based Swarms, Puneet Jain
Theses and Dissertations
Optimization problems lie at the core of improving performance in various tasks, ranging from day-to-day work scheduling to coordinating robots in a warehouse fulfillment center. Distributed swarm systems provide a robust and adaptive solution approach to many optimization problems. Instead of using one really sophisticated agent, multiple smaller less sophisticated agents can provide the flexibility to evaluate more options and still provide a "good" answer. This dissertation uses graphs to model, analyze, and simulate swarm behavior, primarily to predict the time-to-converge (TTC) and success probability. First, we use a bipartite model for the distributed best-of-N problem, and show how the …

Utility Of Immobilized Metal Salens As Electrocatalysts: Fuel Cells And Organic Electrosynthesis, Zachary A. Nguyen, Shelley D. Minteer
Utility Of Immobilized Metal Salens As Electrocatalysts: Fuel Cells And Organic Electrosynthesis, Zachary A. Nguyen, Shelley D. Minteer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
There have been significant advancements in the electrosynthesis of fuels and organic molecules, making it an increasingly sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional chemical redox reagents. Early versions of these systems faced challenges in chemo selectivity due to high applied overpotentials, which have been mitigated with the introduction of molecular electrocatalysts, like metal salens (MSalens). These MSalens reduce the required overpotentials, increase turnover numbers (TON), and have simple modularity within their ligand structure allowing for tunable selectivity. While these MSalen electrocatalysts are typically used homogeneously for engineering simplicity, downstream separations are often costly and time-consuming. Immobilization of MSalens addresses these …
A Comparison Of Rfssw And Rsw For Automotive Manufacturing, Damon Michael Gale
A Comparison Of Rfssw And Rsw For Automotive Manufacturing, Damon Michael Gale
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, automotive body panels have been made of steel and joined by a process called resistance spot welding (RSW). However, in efforts to reduce vehicle weight to improve the energy efficiency of the vehicle, automotive manufactures have begun substituting aluminum in place of steel. While aluminum can be joined with RSW, a myriad of challenges arise from doing so. These challenges result in less consistent weld quality and accelerated electrode wear. Refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW) is an emerging joining technology that could replace RSW as it is believed to be capable of creating superior joints in thin sheet …
