These themes have been censorship targets and are examined due to their …
Avian Adaptation To Thermal Gradients, Justin Wheeler Baldwin
Avian Adaptation To Thermal Gradients, Justin Wheeler Baldwin
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Life on Earth has adapted to extremely different temperatures worldwide. However, across distant branches of the tree of life, animals in similar temperature environments often share similar phenotypic traits. Specifically, traits that bear on the ratio between an individual’s surface area (e.g. appendage length) and its volume (e.g. body size) are particularly important for temperature regulation and are codified in canonical biogeographical rules. Although these global patterns of finding larger-bodied (Bergmann’s Rule) and shorter-limbed (Allen’s Rule) animals in colder regions are widely upheld, they also show substantial variation. It remains poorly understood why some animals conform to these biogeographical rules …
Sustainable Plastics From Plastic Metabolisms: Leveraging Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria For Polyhydroxyalkanoate Synthesis, Eric Michael Conners
Sustainable Plastics From Plastic Metabolisms: Leveraging Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria For Polyhydroxyalkanoate Synthesis, Eric Michael Conners
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) are a taxonomically diverse group of gram-negative bacteria representing some of Earth’s most metabolically versatile life, with many genera capable of switching between the four major metabolic modes – chemoheterotrophy, chemoautotrophy, photoheterotrophy, and photoautotrophy. Today, we exploit this diversity to explore fundamental questions about microbial metabolism. At the same time, many researchers are eager to use PNSB as tools for biotechnological innovations. Yet there exists a gap between fundamental biology and applied science. Part of the challenge is that we rely on a handful of model organisms – namely, members of the genera Rhodopseudomonas and Rhodobacter …

The Activity And Origin Of The Chitinases In The Gut Of The Mediterranean House Gecko, Alec John
The Activity And Origin Of The Chitinases In The Gut Of The Mediterranean House Gecko, Alec John
Masters Theses (Archived)
Chitin is a major component of the exoskeleton of arthropods as well as the cell wall of fungi. This amino polysaccharide polymer provides structure and protection to these organisms and represents a significant barrier to digestion of arthropod prey and fighting fungal infections. Chitinases are enzymes that break down chitin. Smaller insectivores, based upon the higher surface-to-volume ratio of their even smaller prey, ingest a large amount of chitin per unit prey item. Therefore, they represent high-likelihood opportunities to bio prospect for novel chitinases that may be effective against pathogenic fungi. Fungal infections are notoriously difficult to treat, and they …
Teaching Dena'ina Language Through Dena'ina Culturally Based Reading Practices, Joel Isaak Yes
Teaching Dena'ina Language Through Dena'ina Culturally Based Reading Practices, Joel Isaak Yes
Indigenous Studies
The Dena'ina language is a well-documented Northern Dene Alaska Native language in south-central Alaska. The Dena'ina language is on the brink of going to sleep. The Dena'ina community strongly desires for the Dena'ina language to once again thrive in the community. Language-use within the community is a contributing factor to the health of the community. As Dena'ina tribes work towards bringing back the Dena'ina language, the community grapples with the role of reading and writing, both potentially harmful and aiding community language work. A Classroom-Based Action Research qualitative study was conducted to determine if reading instruction in the Dena'ina language …
The Imposition Of Power: Modernity And Nature In Hemingway And Mccarthy, Danielle Ball
The Imposition Of Power: Modernity And Nature In Hemingway And Mccarthy, Danielle Ball
Honors College Theses
This thesis focuses on the role of nature in opposition to modernity in Ernest Hemingway's “The Last Good Country” and “The End of Something” as well as Cormac McCarthy’s The Orchard Keeper. Each author places the forces of modernity, such as the logging industry or the introduction of the railroad, at odds with the untouched state of the natural world. Specifically, I emphasize the different portrayals of the natural world from each author. Hemingway’s nature is very closely tied to Romanticism, as nature is a spiritual and healing force for those who choose to commune with it. However, McCarthy portrays …

Stable Isotope Analyses Of Eye Lenses And Stomach-Content Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Variation In Arctic Whitefish Trophic Dynamics, Jonah A. Bacon
Fisheries
Determining the ontogenetic trophic ecology of sympatric, morphologically similar fishes is critical for increasing our understanding of life history. We combined bulk and amino acid compound-specific stable isotope analysis of eye lenses with stomach-content analysis to examine ontogenetic trophic dynamics of four amphidromous whitefishes (Arctic Cisco Coregonus autumnalis, Least Cisco C. sardinella, Broad Whitefish C. nasus, Humpback Whitefish C. pidschian) from the central Beaufort Sea, Alaska. Compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope results showed slight increases in trophic position across ontogeny for each species and indicated the feasibility of this method for comparing the trophic ontogenetic development of closely related, mobile predator …

Meaning As Process And Product: Hybridizing Metamodern Hylosemiotics With Postmodern And Contemporary American Poetry, Zeke Shomler
Meaning As Process And Product: Hybridizing Metamodern Hylosemiotics With Postmodern And Contemporary American Poetry, Zeke Shomler
English
This thesis expands on Jason Storm’s theory of metamodern hylosemiotics by addressing contemporary American poetic strategies and their relationship to modernism and postmodernism, especially through Cole Swenson and David St. John’s definition of the “American hybrid.” In modifying Storm’s theoretical system, I offer a hybridized semiotics that locates meaning both in the information or “content” inferred through the act of reading and the related processes of interacting with the text. Through readings of poetry by John Ashbery, Terrance Hayes, Clark Coolidge, and William Stafford, I show that hybridizing semiotics is not only necessary for the consistency and viability of metamodern …

Marine Biology
Carbohydrates derived from Laminariales (kelp), including polysaccharides and sugar alcohols, present significant market opportunities for nascent mariculture industries. These carbohydrates can enhance crop biomass value through extractive processing, with applications in medicine, manufacturing, health supplements, and bio-plastics. The relative abundance and composition of carbohydrates in kelp can vary depending on species, life history, tissue type, season, and environmental conditions. In Alaska, mariculture of kelp focuses on three species: Alaria marginata, Nereocystis luetkeana, and Saccharina latissima. This study assessed the relative abundance of carbohydrates (glucan, mannitol, alginate, and fucoidan) in these species, as well as the sulfate content of fucoidan and …

(1) Background: Impeded resolution of inflammation contributes substantially to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD); consequently, resolving inflammation is pivotal to the amelioration of AD pathology. This can potentially be achieved by the treatment with specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs), which should resolve neuroinflammation in brains. (2) Methods: Here, we report the histological effects of long-term treatment with an SPM, maresin-like 1 (MarL1), on AD pathogenesis in a transgenic 5xFAD mouse model. (3) Results: MarL1 treatment reduced Aβ overload, curbed the loss of neurons in brains especially cholinergic neurons associated with cleaved-caspase-3-associated apoptotic degeneration, reduced microgliosis and the pro-inflammatory M1 …

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent and complex condition influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This chapter explores the genotype-by-environment interactions that contribute to the development and progression of NAFLD in the Mexican American population. Using advanced genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics approaches, we investigated how specific genetic variants interact with environmental factors such as depression, acculturation stress, and social determinants of health, to influence NAFLD risk and severity. Our findings reveal significant genotype-by-environment interactions for key NAFLD-related traits, including HbA1c, AST/ALT ratio, and steatosis-controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). We also discuss the application of cutting-edge proteomic and transcriptomic …

Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) are resistant to most cancer therapeutics and contribute to tumor recurrence and metastasis. Two breast CSC-promoting transcription factors, truncated glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1 (tGLI1) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), have been reported to be frequently co-expressed in HER2-enriched breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), undergo protein-protein interactions for gene regulation and activation, and functionally cooperate to promote breast CSCs. STAT3 can be activated by activated interleukin-6 receptor/glycoprotein-130 (IL-6R/GP130). Co-targeting of tGLI1 and IL-6R/GP130 has not been investigated in breast cancer or any tumor type. Here, we report that tGLI1 and …

This study aimed to measure the amount of dangerous substances in the cultivated area of the Shikaripara stone mines in Jharkhand, India, which are well known for their stone quarrying. Sixteen soil samples were collected at varying dis-tances from the Shikaripara stone mines in the Dumka District of Jharkhand. The metals found in these samples in-clude Pb, As, Zn, Mn, Cd, Cu, Fg, and Fe. The combined amount of the elements was calculated by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Enrichment factor, accumulation index, contamination factor, pollution load index (PLI), Nemerow index, and ecological risk index (RI) were employed to assess …

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by selective neuronal vulnerability, a phenomenon in which a specific pathology induces the death of a particular subpopulation of neurons. For example, selective neuronal vulnerability in the peripheral nervous system results in sensory, motor, or mixed peripheral neuropathies. While the intrinsic differences between neuronal subtypes cannot fully explain the basis of selective neuronal vulnerability, it is plausible that it partially stems from neuron extrinsic mechanisms such as the malfunction of distinct Schwann cell (SC) subtypes. Recently, we identified an exciting subpopulation of myelinating SCs characterized by the expression of Adamtsl1, Cldn14, and Pmp2 (hereafter referred to …
Unveiling Soil Microbial Communities And Resistomes In Northern Alaska National Wildlife Refuges, Bevyn Amber Cover
Unveiling Soil Microbial Communities And Resistomes In Northern Alaska National Wildlife Refuges, Bevyn Amber Cover

Microbial communities residing in pristine high-latitude soils play a critical role in ecosystem function, but also harbor potential threats such as acting as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Current knowledge about these microbial communities and the resistance genes they carry presents limits to the ability to predict how these ecosystems will respond to climate change. This knowledge gap is particularly concerning in light of the potential public health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance harbored within these communities as antibiotic-resistant human infections continue to increase. This study investigated the microbial communities and details the antimicrobial resistance gene reservoirs in previously …
Effects Of Juvenile Mass On Reproduction And Calf Survival In A Low-Density Moose Population, Sara R. Henslee
Effects Of Juvenile Mass On Reproduction And Calf Survival In A Low-Density Moose Population, Sara R. Henslee
Biological Sciences
Moose (Alces alces) are a valuable big game species in Alaska and serve as a critical food source for residents. Near Nome, Alaska, the local moose population has remained at low densities for decades, and there is strong public interest in investigating the cause behind the population's failure to increase in abundance. Compared to other moose populations in Alaska, the population of moose near Nome does not appear to be nutritionally limited or close to carrying capacity. I sought to explore how juvenile mass, a widely used metric to assess moose nutritional status in Alaska, influences reproductive output and subsequent …
