Variability And Frequency Of Daily Rainfall In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Abdullah Ai-Saleh
Variability And Frequency Of Daily Rainfall In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Abdullah Ai-Saleh
The Geographical Bulletin
This study examines the temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital. The city has experienced significant urbanization in the past two decades. Therefore, the impervious surfaces and the restriction of original surface flow routes increase runoff in Riyadh city. Thus, stormwater frequently accumulates in streets because it exceeds the storm sewer capacity, storm sewers are blocked or partially blocked by sediment, or due to the lack of storm sewers. Data from three climatic stations in Riyadh and north of the city are used to characterize the temporal and spatial variations of rainfall amounts …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Alterations in mitochondrial function are the linchpin in numerous disease states including in the development of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CIPN), a major dose-limiting toxicity of widely used chemotherapeutic cytotoxins. In CIPN, mitochondrial dysfunction is characterized by deficits in mitochondrial bioenergetics (e.g., decreased ATP production) that are thought to drive the degeneration of the peripheral nerve sensory axon terminal sensory arbors in the skin (the intraepidermal nerve fibers; IENFs) and induce abnormal spontaneous discharge in peripheral nerve sensory axons. Preserving mitochondrial function is anticipated to prevent CIPN. We have now discovered that the G-protein-coupled receptor, A3 adenosine receptor subtype (A3AR), is …

Pharmacotherapeutic Efficacy Of Astaxanthin Toward Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review, Harnd Abdullah Ali, Bushra Hassan Marouf, Lanja Ibraheim Saeed, Rafl M. Kamil, Savan Mohammed Dilshad
BioMed Visions Journal
Background: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common malignancies in women, characterized by the malignant proliferation of breast epithelial cells that significantly impairs patients’ quality of life. Astaxanthin (ASN), a marine-derived xanthophyll carotenoid, is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Emerging evidence suggests that ASN may exert anti-neoplastic effects by inhibiting tumorigenesis and suppressing the growth and progression of BC cells. This systematic review aims to critically evaluate the therapeutic potential of ASN as a pharmacological agent in the prevention and management of breast cancer.
Methodology: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in …

Visual Mindful Autoethnography In Practice: Integrating Visual Expressive Art And Self-Compassion Into The Research Process, Jennifer Bentley
Mindfulness Studies Theses
This thesis introduces the framework of Visual Mindful Autoethnography (VmAE) which integrates mindfulness, self-compassion, and creative visual expression as tools for reflexive self-inquiry within the research process. Grounded in the principles of autoethnography and mindfulness, VmAE fosters a deep engagement with personal narratives, biases, and cultural contexts while encouraging emotional resilience, self-awareness, and ethical integrity. By utilizing techniques such as expressive art and visual process journalling, this approach re-presents the inner emotional landscape while facilitating a balanced exploration of subjective experience. The framework is supported by the “P.A.C.E. Research with C.A.R.E.” model, which establishes mindfulness and self-compassion as foundational principles …

Ifá And Mindfulness: Two Distinct Practices With Parallel Concepts To Improve Mental Health, Frank Matias
Mindfulness Studies Theses
This research compares the West African Ifá tradition with Western mindfulness in promoting mental health and well-being. Both Ifá and mindfulness aim to strengthen the mind and enhance awareness. Negative emotions like anger, grief, and confusion disturb our peace and composure, leading to reactive responses. Negative emotions can significantly affect our mental well-being. Ifá and mindfulness practices support each other by improving cognitive skills and raising awareness of challenges. I will analyze the Ifá principles of Orí (head/mind), Òríṣàs (emotional guidance), Ìwá-pèlé (good character/patience), Ese Ifá (poetic verses), and Odù Ifá (binary code/Ifá literary corpus) alongside the mindfulness practice of …

« Au Cœur Du Harem » Et Du Métissage Linguistique D’Elisa Chimenti En Italien : Comparaison Différentielle Et Décentrement Linguistique, Pierpaolo Amenta
Al-Kīmiyā
This article examines the literary language of Elisa Chimenti (1883-1969), which is full of xenisms, linguistic loans, metaphors, and idioms that stem from a transcultural and heterolingual imaginary. Her novel Au cœur du harem (Éditions du Scorpion, 1958), translated into Italian in 2000 under the supervision of Emanuela Benini (Edizioni E/O), is a striking example. Drawing on a differential comparative approach (Heidmann, 2017), we look at these texts to reflect on Elisa Chimenti’s literary language and to examine the translational stakes of her work and its heterolingualism (Grutman, 1997; Suchet, 2014).

Wild Magic Farms: Increasing Student Engagement And Decreasing Academic Regression In Middle School Extended School Year Through Use Of A Role-Playing Game, Maryanne Cullinan
Educational Studies Dissertations
The Extended School Year (ESY) is a federal program that falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Law (2004) as part of Special Education in public schools in the United States. It is intended to help reduce regression in student progress towards Individualized Education Program goals. However, in New Hampshire, ESY struggles with a lack of clear goals, student buy-in and quality engagement. This study examined how a researcher designed role-playing game (RPG) could impact both summer academic regression and student engagement in a middle school ESY. Utilizing i-Ready testing (n=13) data and attendance data (n=9), this study compared …

Pacific Faculty Work
Background/Objectives: Children and teenagers display a distinct metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) phenotype, yet studies of childhood MASH are scarce and validated animal models lacking, limiting the development of treatments. Poor vitamin C (VitC) status may affect MASH progression and often co-occurs with high-fat diets and related metabolic imbalances. As a regulator of DNA methylation, poor VitC status may further contribute to MASH by regulating gene expression This study investigated guinea pigs—a species that, like humans, depends on vitC in the diet—as a model of pediatric MASH, examining the effects of poor VitC status on MASH hallmarks and global DNA methylation …

Targeting Cytokine-Mediated Inflammation In Brain Disorders: Developing New Treatment Strategies, Rahul Mallick, Sanjay Basak, Premanjali Chowdhury, Ranjit Kumar Das, Antara Banerjee, Sujay Paul, Surajit Pathak, Asim K. Duttaroy
Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Cytokine-mediated inflammation is increasingly recognized for playing a vital role in the pathophysiology of a wide range of brain disorders, including neurodegenerative, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental problems. Pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) cause neuroinflammation, alter brain function, and accelerate disease development. Despite progress in understanding these pathways, effective medicines targeting brain inflammation are still limited. Traditional anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drugs are effective in peripheral inflammatory illnesses. Still, they face substantial hurdles when applied to the central nervous system (CNS), such as the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and unwanted systemic effects. This review highlights the …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Microneedle patches for topical administration of photodynamic therapy (PDT) sensitizers are attractive owing to their safety, selectivity, and noninvasiveness. However, low-efficiency photosensitizer delivery coupled with the limitations of the hypoxic tumor microenvironment remains challenging. To overcome these issues, we developed an effective microneedle patch based on intermolecular electrostatic interactions within a photosensitizer matrix containing a zinc-containing porphyrin analogue, ZnBP (w). This design improved the mechanical strength of the microneedle patch and enhanced the photosensitizer loading efficiency in aqueous environments. A key feature of the system is efficient electron transfer between ZnBP (w) and NADH upon photoirradiation. Electrostatic interactions between ZnBP …

A Case For Broadening Our View Of Mechanism In Developmental Biology, B Duygu Özpolat, Swathi Arur, Mansi Srivastava
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Developmental biologists can perform studies that describe a phenomenon (descriptive work) and/or explain how the phenomenon works (mechanistic work). There is a prevalent perception that molecular/genetic explanations achieved via perturbations of gene function are the primary means of advancing mechanistic knowledge. We believe this to be a limited perspective, one that does not effectively represent the breadth of work in our field. We surveyed a representative and diverse group of colleagues to share their views on what it takes to infer mechanism. Here, we briefly examine the factors that have shaped the dominant view of mechanism, summarize responses to the …

Adenosine-Sensitive Upper Septal Fascicular Ventricular Tachycardia Associated With Takotsubo Syndrome, Parker O'Neill, Daniel Underberg, Reginald Ho, Darius Farzad, Gregary Marhefka
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
We describe a rare case of upper septal fascicular ventricular tachycardia (VT) associated with takotsubo syndrome that failed to convert with synchronized shock but converted to normal sinus rhythm after intravenous adenosine administration. The excess catecholamine state of takotsubo syndrome likely provided substrate for cyclic adenosine monophosphate–mediated triggered activity, causing fascicular VT.

Deep learning is a promising strategy for modeling cis-regulatory elements. However, models trained on genomic sequences often fail to explain why the same transcription factor can activate or repress transcription in different contexts. To address this limitation, we developed an active learning approach to train models that distinguish between enhancers and silencers composed of binding sites for the photoreceptor transcription factor cone-rod homeobox (CRX). After training the model on nearly all bound CRX sites from the genome, we coupled synthetic biology with uncertainty sampling to generate additional rounds of informative training data. This allowed us to iteratively train models on …
