The Mitochondria As An Emerging Target Of Self- Renewal In T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Majd Al-Hamaly, Evelyn Winter, Jessica S. Blackburn Feb 2025

The Mitochondria As An Emerging Target Of Self- Renewal In T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Majd Al-Hamaly, Evelyn Winter, Jessica S. Blackburn

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common leukemia in children, with the T-cell subtype (T- ALL) accounting for 15% of those cases. Despite advancements in the treatment of T-ALL, patients still face a dismal prognosis following their first relapse. Relapse can be attributed to the inability of chemotherapy agents to eradicate leukemia stem cells (LSC), which possess self-renewal capabilities and are responsible for the long-term maintenance of the disease. Mitochondria have been recognized as a therapeutic vulnerability for cancer stem cells, including LSCs. Mitocans have shown promise in T-ALL both in vitro and in vivo, with some currently in …

Potential Mental Disorder Symptoms In The Prophet Elijah: An Exegetical And Psychological Analysis Of Selected Episodes From 1 Kings 18–19, Dariusz Iwański, Thomas G. Plante Feb 2025

Potential Mental Disorder Symptoms In The Prophet Elijah: An Exegetical And Psychological Analysis Of Selected Episodes From 1 Kings 18–19, Dariusz Iwański, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

This interdisciplinary study examines the prophet Elijah’s experiences as depicted in 1 Kings 18–19 through a multidisciplinary lens, combining theological, literary, and psychological perspectives. Drawing on literary and historical–critical methods, a biblical scholar analyzes the narrative’s linguistic and cultural dimensions, while a psychologist evaluates these findings using contemporary mental health frameworks, including the DSM-5 and models of spiritual struggle. By synthesizing these approaches, the study explores Elijah’s emotional challenges, highlighting their resonance with modern understandings of mental health and spirituality. The findings suggest that Elijah’s profound struggles—marked by triumph, despair, and renewal—offer valuable insights into the interplay of faith, vulnerability, …

Amygdala activation by emotional arousal during memory formation can prioritize events for long-term memory. Building upon our prior demonstration that brief electrical stimulation to the human amygdala reliably improved long-term recognition memory for images of neutral objects without eliciting an emotional response, our study aims to explore and describe individual differences and stimulation-related factors in amygdala-mediated memory modulation. Thirty-one patients undergoing intracranial monitoring for intractable epilepsy were shown neutral object images paired with direct amygdala stimulation during encoding with recognition memory tested immediately and one day later. Adding to our prior sample, we found an overall memory enhancement effect without …

Background and purpose: Angiogenesis is a pathological component of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Current therapies, although successful, are prone to high levels of patient non-response and a loss of efficacy over time, indicating the need to explore other therapeutic avenues. We have shown that an interaction between syndecan-2 and the tyrosine phosphatase receptor CD148 (RTP Type J) results in the ablation of angiogenesis. Here we exploit this pathway to develop a peptide activator of CD148 as a therapy for neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Experimental approach: We tested a peptide (QM107) derived from syndecan-2 in a variety of angiogenesis models and …

Unlocking The Phosphorus Circularity Potential Of Corn Belt Watersheds With Biorefinery Phosphorus Recovery Incentives, Kenneth Ruffatto, Arghajeet Saha, Rebecca L. Muenich, Andrew J. Margenot, Roland D. Cusick

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

As global phosphorus (P) stores rapidly decline, P fed algal blooms continue to threaten critical freshwater resources across the globe. In the Midwestern United States (US), particularly the Corn Belt, biorefineries could play a key role in addressing this issue. By recovering P from the byproducts of ethanol production these facilities could reduce the P content of distillers grain feed, thereby reducing P excreted in manures. This process could potentially divert P away from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and toward renewable P (rP) fertilizer production utilizing the recovered P. To foster the inclusion of P recovery incentives in state …

Advanced T2nn-Taxonomy Framework For Assessing Quality Of Dynamic Logos In Digital Media Via Type-2 Neutrosophic Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, Yan Lu, Meidi Zhang

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

In the context of digital media, the quality evaluation of dynamic logo design focuses on visual impact, brand communication, technical execution, and user experience. Visual impact assesses the logo's appeal and creativity; brand communication examines if the logo accurately reflects the brand image; technical execution looks at animation smoothness and cross-platform compatibility; user experience measures interactivity and memorability. These factors ensure the logo's effectiveness and influence in a digital environment. The evaluation of dynamic logo design quality within the digital media context is Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Recently, the Taxonomy technique was described to grapple with MCDA. The Type-2 neutrosophic …

Cleaning The Plastic Spring, Trip Johnson Feb 2025

Cleaning The Plastic Spring, Trip Johnson

Vanderbilt Law Review

Everyday plastic items typically display the chasing arrows symbol with a resin identification code. When seen on a plastic product, this seemingly insignificant trade combination causes the average consumer’s mind to confer unwarranted environmental benefits to the item. Plastic, unlike aluminum, glass, or paper, poses barriers to recycling that diminish a region’s recycling capabilities. Despite knowing most Americans lack the knowledge necessary to properly discard plastic waste, plastic-producing companies continue to plaster chasing arrows symbols and resin identification codes onto their products. Worse yet, these companies do so without explaining the available recycling opportunities or challenges associated with recycling most …

Volumetric Subdivision And The Architectures Of Property, Douglas C. Harris Feb 2025

Volumetric Subdivision And The Architectures Of Property, Douglas C. Harris

All Faculty Publications

Henry Smith’s influential architectural or modular theory of property places things, defined by the right to exclude, at its core. Property as “The Law of Things” relies on an exclusionary strategy, augmented with governance strategies that delineate particular rights of use, to define owned things and to enable their uses. This Article considers that claim and Smith’s call for multi-dimensional theorizing that accounts for property in “the real world” and “in real life” through an analysis of the increasingly common practice of volumetric subdivision to produce three-dimensional property. Focussing on the statutory frameworks in the Canadian province of British Columbia, …

Religion: Evolutionary Foundation For, Nicole Fellice Ko, Norman P. Li Feb 2025

Religion: Evolutionary Foundation For, Nicole Fellice Ko, Norman P. Li

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Religion refers to a structured set of spiritual beliefs and rituals. Evolution refers to the process by which living organisms transform and develop over time. Religion—the belief in spiritual beings—influences nearly every aspect of life, making it challenging to understand many phenomena without considering its influence (Bloom, 2012). About two-thirds of the world’s population is religious (Kramer & Tong, 2024); 70% of Americans consider themselves spiritual, and 83% believe they have a spirit separate from their bodies (PEW Research Center, 2023). Throughout history, religion has played a significant role in conflicts like war and continues to influence contemporary issues such …

Proactive Conversational Ai: A Comprehensive Survey Of Advancements And Opportunities, Yang Deng, Lizi Liao, Wenqiang Lei, Grace Hui Yang, Wai Lam, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dialogue systems are designed to offer human users social support or functional services through natural language interactions. Traditional conversation research has put significant emphasis on a system's response-ability, including its capacity to understand dialogue context and generate appropriate responses. However, the key element of proactive behavior-a crucial aspect of intelligent conversations-is often overlooked in these studies. Proactivity empowers conversational agents to lead conversations towards achieving pre-defined targets or fulfilling specific goals on the system side. Proactive dialogue systems are equipped with advanced techniques to handle complex tasks, requiring strategic and motivational interactions, thus representing a significant step towards artificial general …
