International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Vascular smooth muscle cells in resistance arterioles express a diverse array of ion channels that control microvascular function. Specifically, voltage-dependent potassium (KV) channels induce vasodilation via smooth muscle hyperpolarization, positioning these channels as important regulators of vascular tone, and thus blood flow. PURPOSE: Despite substantial research exploring the influence of KV channels in the regulation of blood flow in various animal models, many aspects of their regulation remain incompletely understood in humans. Specifically, this relationship has never been explored in human skeletal muscle in vivo, the major site of total peripheral resistance. Therefore, we tested …

The biguanide metformin attenuates mitochondrial oxidation and is proposed as an anti-cancer therapy. However, recent clinical studies suggest increased proliferation and fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) in a subgroup of patients with breast cancer (BC) after metformin therapy. Considering that FAO can activate Src kinase in aggressive triple-negative BC (TNBC), we postulate that low-dose biguanide-driven AMPK-ACC-FAO signaling may activate the Src pathway in TNBC. The low bioavailability of metformin in TNBC xenografts mimics metformin's in vitro low-dose effect. Pharmacological or genetic inhibition of FAO significantly enhances the anti-tumor properties of biguanides. Lower doses of biguanides induce and higher doses suppress Src …

Obesity is a multifaceted disease that poses a significant public health challenge. Recent discoveries in understanding the biological pathways that regulate satiety and metabolism have led to a shift in the treatment paradigm for obesity. Thus, the gap between pharmacological and surgical interventions has diminished. The latest approved anti-obesity medications are achieving weight loss comparable to surgery. These GLP-1 analog-based therapies not only cause substantial weight loss but also improve obesity-associated comorbidities. However, there are still unmet needs in obesity care, and treatment options with alternative pathways are necessary. Whether achieved through lifestyle changes or medication, weight loss often leads …

Background/aimOsteobiologics are increasingly used in orthopedics and spine surgery to facilitate bone healing and prevent non-union. Synthetic osteobiologics are artificial materials crafted in laboratories that aim to replicate the natural composition and functionality of bone. Notable examples, such as calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate, are engineered to mirror the mineral aspect of bone. They mimic human bone functionality, exhibiting osteoconductive, osteoinductive, and osteogenic properties. These characteristics promote cell attachment, migration, recruitment, and differentiation. Consequently, synthetic osteobiologics (osteoconductive grafts) have been introduced in bone fracture repair. The main strength of synthetic osteobiologics in spine surgery lies in improving fusion rates and …

Background/aim: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of empagliflozin on cyclophosphamide-induced neurotoxicity in rats.Materials and methods: A total of 32 male Wistar rats were separated into 4 groups as 8 rats each: control group, cyclophosphamide group, empagliflozin group and the cyclophosphamide plus empagliflozin group. At the end of the experiment rats' brains were removed for biochemical analysis of oxidative stress parameters (malondialdehyde, total sulfhydryl, total oxidant status and total antioxidant capacity) and histopathological analysis. Results: Total sulfhydryl levels were increased in group empagliflozin and group empagliflozin and cyclophosphamide compared to the cyclophosphamide group but did not improve …

Background/aimCarotid artery is the majority artery for brain feeding. Carotid Bodies (CBs) are located in carotid bifurcation and regulate body fluid pH. We aimed to evaluate the changes in CB-related pH levels as a consequence of degeneration induced by the ligation of both Common Carotid Arteries (BCCAL).Materials and methodsWe included 23 adult male New Zealand rabbits. A control group (n= 5); a sham group (0.5 mL saline injected n=5) and the main study group (subjected to the BCCAL procedure, n = 13). We monitored and recorded pH levels, and cardiac rhythms before, during, and after the experiments at two-day intervals. …

Background/aimLaparoscopic surgery in gynecology has advantages of reduced scarring, less postoperative pain, faster recovery and lower risk of complications. Despite these adavantages, shoulder pain still remains a major concern affecting upto 90% of patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. The use of Abdominal compliance index (ACI) may offer the benefits of gaining work space for safer surgery and may prevent the drawbacks of applying higher insuflation pressures. We investigated the relation of shoulder pain and abdominal pain and analgesic use with the recently advised ACI which is a surrogate index of abdominal expansion in patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopic surgery.Materials and methodsThirty one …
