The United States' Recycling Model Is In Desperate Need Of A Makeover, Lindsay A. Williamson Feb 2025

The United States' Recycling Model Is In Desperate Need Of A Makeover, Lindsay A. Williamson

Widener Commonwealth Law Review

Most Americans do not hesitate to throw something away, but a lack of recycling is causing landfills to overflow with products that could be reused and repurposed. In 2017, it was estimated that the average American creates 4.51 pounds of garbage per day, nearly double the amount of the 2.68 pounds Americans produced on average in 1960. Recycling in the United States has become problematic as recycling companies turn away recyclables that have been contaminated with food and other nonrecyclables. The effect is that not nearly enough recyclable products are being repurposed, with many of them ending up in landfills. …

Yes, Your Broken Tailight Does Matter: Why Enforcement Of Minor Traffic Violations Is Integral For A Safe Society, Richard E. Berner Feb 2025

Yes, Your Broken Tailight Does Matter: Why Enforcement Of Minor Traffic Violations Is Integral For A Safe Society, Richard E. Berner

Widener Commonwealth Law Review

“At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.” These words serve as a reminder that within the framework of law and order, human beings are the most spectacular creatures to walk the face of the Earth. Outside of this framework, we are no greater than the most savage of beasts. The United States has historically faced challenges with the presence of racial bias within the legal system. In particular, traffic laws have been subject to uneven enforcement across the country, with one study indicating that black drivers were approximately …

Acute Vs. Chronic Response To Doxorubicin Treatment With Endurance Training In Non-Tumor-Bearing Rats, Quinten W. Pigg, Dillon Harris, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Bertha F. Polegato, Carol R. Tonon, Mariana Janini Gomes

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapy agent widely used to treat many types of cancer; however, DOX use is limited due to its adverse effects. While cardiotoxicity is the most well-recognized issue, skeletal muscle wasting and weakness is another significant adverse effect that can decrease quality of life, manifested clinically through weakness and exercise intolerance. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the effects of DOX treatment on exercise intolerance and muscle function in preclinical models of both acute and chronic effects of chemotherapy using non-tumor-bearing rats. We also investigated the preventive and therapeutic effects of endurance training in these models. METHODS: …

Examining The Relationship Between Competition Stress And Performance In Collegiate Rodeo Bronc Riders Through Salivary Cortisol And Heart Rate, Tyler K. Handley, Jennifer L. Zoller, Chelsie J. Huseman, Lisa Colvin, William Storer, Amanda Baxter

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Competition stress significantly impacts the performance of athletes across various sports. Despite its unique demands, stress in rodeo athletes remains underexplored, largely due to the sport's nomadic and individualistic nature and its prior lack of mainstream attention. While comparisons can be drawn between the intermittent structure of rodeo and mainstream sports like baseball or football, the recent surge in rodeo's popularity has increased interest in optimizing athlete performance. PUROSE: The aim of this study was to identify and compare salivary cortisol concentration (SCC) and physical workloads experienced by riders and horses in practice and competition settings. Additionally, the study aims …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is higher for men compared with women, yet women present with a greater risk factor burden at the time of their diagnosis. Currently, research is lacking that addresses these sex-specific differences in disease onset and progression, research that is critical to understanding the pathophysiology of diabetes and developing optimal treatment strategies for both women and men. These same sex differences are present in animal models of T2DM. The paucity of suitable T2DM animal models is a barrier to investigations of these sex differences. The University of California Davis (UCD)-T2DM rat model, bred …

Voluntary Wheel Running Improves Glucose Homeostasis And Visceral Adiposity In Old Mice, Alexandra Canizales, David J. Buckley, Sogol Zahedi, Daniel W. Trott

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Age is an independent risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes, which is characterized in part by impaired glucose homeostasis, greater body weight and visceral adiposity. In older humans, exercise has been demonstrated to be a viable modality to improve these aforementioned outcomes. Surprisingly, to date, no one has assessed whether exercise improves glucose tolerance in old mice. Further the mechanism(s) of improvement in old animals independent of overt obesity is not well understood. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether 8 weeks of voluntary wheel running would result in improved glucose tolerance and …

Effect Of Voltage-Dependent Potassium Channel Antagonism On Vasodilation In Skeletal Muscle Of Humans, Ysabella I. Ruiz-Pick, Rauchelle E. Richey, Brenda L. Gilliland, Tyson C. Garfield, Asim Kichloo, Albert H. Olivencia-Yurvati, Gregory M. Dick, Steven A. Romero

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Vascular smooth muscle cells in resistance arterioles express a diverse array of ion channels that control microvascular function. Specifically, voltage-dependent potassium (KV) channels induce vasodilation via smooth muscle hyperpolarization, positioning these channels as important regulators of vascular tone, and thus blood flow. PURPOSE: Despite substantial research exploring the influence of KV channels in the regulation of blood flow in various animal models, many aspects of their regulation remain incompletely understood in humans. Specifically, this relationship has never been explored in human skeletal muscle in vivo, the major site of total peripheral resistance. Therefore, we tested …
