A Quantitative Study: The Association Between College Selection Methodology And Sense Of Belongingness Among First-Year, Full-Time Residential College Students, Tamara Reese Feb 2025

A Quantitative Study: The Association Between College Selection Methodology And Sense Of Belongingness Among First-Year, Full-Time Residential College Students, Tamara Reese

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

College selection methodology can be traced back to the 1920s when colleges had to rely on their to travel through word of mouth, catalogs, pictures, and brochures. Although virtual tours can be dated back to 1994, COVID-19 catapulted the popularity of traveling through virtual reality. While many studies have sought to measure the impact of visitation on student enrollment propensities, none have made a noteworthy effort to account for a potential endogenous link between the student's college choice methodology and a student's sense of belongingness at their college or university campus. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study is to …

Microglia actively survey the brain and dynamically interact with neurons to maintain brain homeostasis. Microglial Gi protein-coupled receptors (Gi-GPCRs) play a critical role in microglia-neuron communications. However, the impact of temporally activating microglial Gi signaling on microglial dynamics and neuronal activity in the homeostatic brain remains largely unknown. In this study, we used Gi-based designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (Gi-DREADD) to selectively and temporally modulate microglial Gi signaling pathway. By integrating this chemogenetic approach with in vivo two-photon imaging, we observed that exogenous activation of microglial Gi signaling transiently inhibited microglial process dynamics, reduced neuronal activity, and impaired …

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury adversely affects skeletal muscle, leading to muscle atrophy and weakness, significantly impacting clinical outcomes. This study aimed to determine if estrogen-related receptor gamma (ERRγ) overexpression in skeletal muscle could mitigate muscle atrophy after ACL injury. An animal model with selective overexpression of ERRγ in skeletal muscle (ERR-gamma transgenic mice, TG) and WT control mice were used for this study. All the mice received a mechanical ACL rupture and were euthanized at 4- and 8-week post-injury. Muscle histology, atrophy, and function were evaluated and compared between the TG and WT mice. Muscle-specific ERRγ activation in TG …

Microplastics And Nanoplastics In Tea: Sources, Characteristics And Potential Impacts, Neamatollah Jaafarzadeh Haghighi Fard, Faezeh Jahedi, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Recent scientific studies have raised concerns about the presence and potential impacts of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in tea-based drinks. This review critically examines publications relating to MNPs in tea, with focus on the type of sample involved, methods and techniques employed to isolate and identify MNPs, and the main qualitative and quantitative findings. Sources of MNPs in tea include production water, plastic packaging and contaminated tea leaves but the most important source is teabags when steeped in boiling water. Here, more than 109 MNPs have been reported to be released per plastic teabag. However, significant quantities of MNPs …

The potassium channel tetramerization domain containing 13 (KCTD13) protein is a substrate-specific adapter for cullin3-based E3 ubiquitin ligase. Patients with copy number variants at this locus exhibit genitourinary tract anomalies. In this study, we show that decreased androgen receptor (AR) protein level correlated with increased AR ubiquitination in the testis of Kctd13-deficient mice, suggesting that KCTD13 inhibits AR ubiquitination. KCTD13 increased CUL3-dependent AR ubiquitination but had no effect on CUL3 binding to AR, confirming the role of KCTD13 as an adaptor of CUL3 ligase. Recombinant KCTD13 directly binds to recombinant AR, and the BTB domain of KCTD13 is critical for …

A Natural Law Approach To Parental Rights, Richard A. Epstein Feb 2025

A Natural Law Approach To Parental Rights, Richard A. Epstein

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

The modern interest in the twin cases of Meyer v. Nebraska, and Pierce v. Society of Sisters has sparked a renewed curiosity in the intellectual foundations and current applicability of those two cases. In this instance, I stress less the constitutional underpinnings of the cases in order to focus more on their natural law approach to the parent-child relationship. Based on Lockean principles, I conclude that the standard rules of abuse and neglect offer the sole justification for such intervention, where the state is put to a high standard of proof for intervention. This framework has had only an …

Parental Rights, Parental Choice, And State Public Education Mandates, Nicole Stelle Garnett Feb 2025

Parental Rights, Parental Choice, And State Public Education Mandates, Nicole Stelle Garnett

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

Pierce v. Society of Sisters and Meyer v. Nebraska were cases about parental rights in general, and parental choice in particular. Both centered on a challenge to a state’s legal effort to reduce or eliminate the educational choices available to parents—in the former, by requiring students to attend public schools, in the latter, by requiring instruction in all schools, public and private, be conducted in English. Pierce and Meyer also were about state efforts to forge a homogeneous American citizenry by limiting the educational choices available to parents. As Justice McReynolds observed in Meyer, “The desire of the Legislature …

The Centennial Of Meyer And Pierce: Parents’ Rights, Gender-Affirming Care, And Issues In Education, Ira C. Lupu

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

This paper was prepared for a Symposium, held in March 2024, marking the centennial of the Supreme Court’s decisions in Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) and Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925). At their inception, Meyer and Pierce reflected constitutional principles of economic freedom and parental control of their children’s education. Part I traces the path of ideas put in motion by Meyer and Pierce. These include the decline of their economic freedom component and the broader grounding of their doctrines of parental authority. Eventually, the chameleon-like legacy of Meyer and Pierce stretched to include First Amendment concerns of religious …

The Conservative Response To Transformative Disruption: Voice Or Exit 100 Years After Meyer And Pierce?, Neal Mccluskey Feb 2025

The Conservative Response To Transformative Disruption: Voice Or Exit 100 Years After Meyer And Pierce?, Neal Mccluskey

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

In 1923 and 1925, respectively, the U.S. Supreme Court rulings in Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Society of Sisters established limits on the ability of government to constrain what children’s education contains and where it occurs. The Court recognized the “right” of parents to exercise basic control over those things. One hundred years later, we are seeing a renewed emphasis on “parental rights,” both with booming growth of “school choice” programs that allow government-connected funding to follow children to educational options their parents select and efforts to constrain what public schools do. The position of conservatives on such parental …

Altamimi, Hassan Altalag, Mohamed Alsharif, Nouf Alshammari, Tamadhir Alkhalidi, Abdelhadi Boulifa, Siraj M. El Jamal, Youssef Haikel, Mossad Megahed

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Simple Summary: There is considerable evidence to suggest that frequent ejaculation reduces the risk of prostate cancer. The more frequently ejaculation occurs without risky sexual behavior, the lower the risk of prostate cancer. The mechanisms regulating the reduction in PCa risk associated with frequent ejaculations are attributed to the suppression of the sympathetic nervous system, resulting in a relief of tension and a slowing of the division of prostate epithelial cells. It is suggested that ejaculation frequency affects gene expression in prostate tissue and subsequently influences the susceptibility of the tissue to tumor formation, leading to a reduction in the …

This study introduces a computational index that employs fuzzy sets theory to identify potential deployment sites for push-pull as a component in the integrated management of Fall Armyworm (FAW) in Africa. The index, validated through known push-pull testing sites and informed by insights from field data and practical observations, is primarily based on companion plants (Desmodium intortum and Brachiaria brizantha), livestock, and maize as covariates. The study developed a set of rules linking each selected covariate to the output as membership functions, which are later combined using an algebraic operator. It identifies extensive maize farms across Africa potentially suitable for …

Spatial Patterns Of Visitor Behavior: A Case Study Of The North Carolina Zoological Park, Maurice L. Mckenzie, Keith G. Oebbage Feb 2025

Spatial Patterns Of Visitor Behavior: A Case Study Of The North Carolina Zoological Park, Maurice L. Mckenzie, Keith G. Oebbage

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper explains the spatial patterns of visitor behavior at the North Carolina Zoological Park (NCZP). The NCZP is one of the top ten tourist attractions in the state, but it is unclear what factors influence each individual's decision to visit the zoo. The research reported in this paper partially confirmed many of the theoretical expectations about visitor behavior. Based on the results of a visitor survey, the NCZP is a family attraction that caters to a largely well-educated and affluent audience. Most of those surveyed came from the nearby urban centers, while the rural counties immediately adjacent to the …

Native Texans' Perception Of Yankees, Byron D. Augustin, Dennis E. Fitzsimons Feb 2025

Native Texans' Perception Of Yankees, Byron D. Augustin, Dennis E. Fitzsimons

The Geographical Bulletin

Texas now ranks as the third most populous state in the United States. Over the past 40 years, much of the population growth can be attributed to migration from outside the state's boundaries. Not all native Texans look favorably on the new growth patterns. "Yankee" is a term which some native Texans tend to label any new resident who does not enter from Mexico. The purpose of this paper is to delineate those states which are perceived by native Texans to produce Yankees. A second goal is to provide insight into the perception that native Texans have regarding the word …

Shoreline Modification And Land Use Of Ford Lake, Michigan, Ashley M. Long, Gregory D. Ruhl Feb 2025

Shoreline Modification And Land Use Of Ford Lake, Michigan, Ashley M. Long, Gregory D. Ruhl

The Geographical Bulletin

Ford Lake in an 800-acre dammed reservoir on the Huron River some 35 miles west of Detroit. The 10-mile shoreline was investigated in the field as well as with the use of soil data and aerial photographs. The investigation of the shoreline reveals that shoreline erosion and mass wasting are related to high erodible soil types. The shoreline is being urbanized mainly with multifamily housing, causing a removal of the deciduous hardwood vegetation which has led to increased runoff. Shoreline owners have reinforced the shoreline to combat severe erosion. It is recommended that a reevalution be undertaken to provide development …
