Regionalism And The Federal Reserve Banks, Kathryn Judge, Lev Menand Mar 2025

Regionalism And The Federal Reserve Banks, Kathryn Judge, Lev Menand

University of Chicago Law Review

Regionalism is central to our country’s central banking system. Rather than rely on a single organization to set monetary policy and oversee banks, Congress created a multiplicity of bodies including twelve Federal Reserve Banks (FRBs), each designed to operate in a different part of the country. These FRBs are an early and undertheorized example of how the federal government uses regional bodies to formulate and administer federal policy. When they were first authorized in 1913, their regional character assuaged concerns about centralizing power over the economy. Today, the FRBs continue to play a number of important roles, helping to shape …

Contraceptive Hormone Influences On The Role Of Primary Reinforcement And Reinforcer-Enhancement In Nicotine Self-Administration, Kathleen Robin Mcnealy Mar 2025

Contraceptive Hormone Influences On The Role Of Primary Reinforcement And Reinforcer-Enhancement In Nicotine Self-Administration, Kathleen Robin Mcnealy

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Hormonal contraceptives contain a synthetic estrogen (e.g., ethinyl estradiol/EE) and/or a synthetic progestin (e.g., levonorgestrel/LEVO) and can exacerbate nicotine intake. However, whether altered intake reflects changes in nicotine reinforcement or enhancement by nicotine of co-occurring reinforcers is unknown. This reinforcer-enhancement effect is evidenced in rats when nicotine self-administration is increased by the presence of a visual stimulus (VS) reinforcer. This dissertation examined the effects of EE and LEVO on nicotine reinforcement and reinforcer-enhancement in ovary-intact female Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were implanted with a jugular catheter and assigned to receive daily injections of EE (Vehicle, 0.125 [Low], or 0.18 [High] μg/day; …

Identical Ratios: A Red Flag Of Ratio Management, Qianhua Ling, Andrea Alston Roberts Mar 2025

Identical Ratios: A Red Flag Of Ratio Management, Qianhua Ling, Andrea Alston Roberts

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This paper identifies a helpful red flag stakeholders can use to detect whether a nonprofit has managed its financial information. This red flag is reporting an identical program ratio—that is, the nonprofit organization reports the exact same ratio in multiple years—while reporting a large change in total spending. We find nonprofits are more likely to report identical program ratios when resource providers rely on ratios; pay is determined, at least in part, by performance; and the potential for regulatory interference is high. This paper also identifies the cost allocation techniques and the specific expenses nonprofits likely manage. We find most …

Evolution Of Mate Guarding Intensity In Crickets As A Possible Adaptation To Sexual Conflict Over Sperm Transfer, Bert Foquet, Jack Thomas Mckermitt, John Hunt, Ben M. Sadd, Scott K. Sakaluk Mar 2025

Evolution Of Mate Guarding Intensity In Crickets As A Possible Adaptation To Sexual Conflict Over Sperm Transfer, Bert Foquet, Jack Thomas Mckermitt, John Hunt, Ben M. Sadd, Scott K. Sakaluk

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Mate guarding is a common behavioral adaptation in males to ensure mating or to hinder current partners from remating with rival males. In the decorated cricket, Gryllodes sigillatus, males transfer a spermatophore to females at mating, comprising a sperm-containing ampulla enveloped in a large gelatinous mass, the spermatophylax, that serves as a nuptial food gift for the female. Males guard the female while she feeds on the nuptial gift and while sperm are evacuated from the ampulla into her reproductive tract. Mate guarding behavior functions to prevent competitors from mating with the female but may also represent a behavioral …

Improving Zero Shot Learning By Linking Multi-Label Cnns With Llms, Michael A. Wegner Mar 2025

Improving Zero Shot Learning By Linking Multi-Label Cnns With Llms, Michael A. Wegner

Theses and Dissertations

Classifying previously unseen objects poses a significant challenge for traditional computer vision algorithms, which rely on extensive labeled training data. Zero-shot reasoning offers a way to overcome this limitation. This research explores a novel method for image recognition using the Animals with Attributes 2 (AWA2) dataset as a proof of concept. A multi-label ResNet50 model predicts core attributes like color, ear shape, or number of limbs. Those attributes then feed into ChatGPT which leverages its extensive knowledge base to classify the animal based on the provided attributes. This novel approach skips the need to train on every possible class. Instead, …

Protecting The Presumption Of Innocence: Tiktok Detectives, Misinformation And Private Content Moderation, Paige Sanders Mar 2025

Protecting The Presumption Of Innocence: Tiktok Detectives, Misinformation And Private Content Moderation, Paige Sanders

Utah Law Review

The presumption of innocence is a fundamental component of the American legal system, but modern media platforms undermine its effectiveness. Platforms like TikTok have become popular sites for true crime content, allowing online detectives to spin their own narratives about high-profile crimes, often with little regard for the truth. This trend undermines the integrity of the legal system and causes irreversible harm to those being baselessly accused on social media. While TikTok and other social media platforms employ guidelines to moderate users’ content, they consistently fall short in preventing the spread of unverified true crime content. This Note explores TikTok’s …

Trauma-Informed Judicial Practice Meets Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Compassionate Written Judgments In Child Protection Cases, Shelley Kierstead

Articles & Book Chapters

Trauma arises from profoundly distressing life events, and manifests in a range of often overwhelming physical and psychological symptoms. The legal community is increasingly recognizing that clients living with trauma need trauma-informed services—that is, services that “recognize, understand and minimize” the long-term impact of trauma. A trauma-informed approach acknowledges that “effective interventions with people require both the avoidance of retraumatization and the presence of respectful and supportive interventions that help people rebuild their lives.”

Ubuntu In Namibia And Kenya: How Emerging Adults Live An Essential African Value Today, Julia S. Rotzinger, Lene Arnett Jensen, Amber Gayle Thalmayer

Psychology

Psychology in Africa often relies on Euro-American theories, despite their limitations in African cultures. Here, a shift to an Afrocentric perspective was made by exploring Ubuntu in two sub-Saharan African countries using a cultural-developmental psychology approach for in-depth emic understanding. Ubuntu (also known as botho, etc.) is a moral ideal that at core means placing a higher importance on the community than on oneself. Most literature on this important African concept has been theoretical rather than empirical, and little is known about how well it describes contemporary worldviews and experiences of emerging adults. In this interview study, Namibian and Kenyan …

Standardizing Canine Breed Data In Veterinary Records Is Challenging, But Computer Vision Offers An Alternative Perspective On Breed Assignment, Glenvelis Perez, Yixuan He, Zihan Lyu, Yilin Chen, Nicholas Howe, Halie M. Rando

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Dog breed is fundamental health information, especially in the context of breed-linked diseases. The standard-ization of breed terminology across health records is necessary to leverage the big data revolution for veterinary research. Breed can also inform clinical decision making. However, client-reported breeds vary in their reliability depending on how breed was determined. Surprisingly, research in computer science reports that AI can assign breed to dogs with over 90% accuracy from a photograph. Here, we explore the extent to which current research in AI is relevant to breed assignment or validation in veterinary contexts. This review provides a primer on approaches …

Molecular Scale Investigations Of Interactions Between Pfas And Concrete, Eric E. Keeler

Theses and Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), widely referred to as “forever chemicals,” exhibit high environmental persistence and potential health risks due to their robust carbon-fluorine bonds. These substances are prevalent in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), used in industrial and military applications, and are known to contaminate environmental surfaces, including concrete. This study aims to characterize the molecular-level interaction energies of six PFAS species—PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFHxA, 6:2 FTS, and PFBS—with calcium silicate, a key component of concrete, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Change in Gibbs free energy (ΔG) was determined for each of the interactions, revealing negative ΔG values for …

Evaluating Weather Effects On Sortie Generation Using Discrete Event Simulation, Markus Case Mar 2025

Evaluating Weather Effects On Sortie Generation Using Discrete Event Simulation, Markus Case

Theses and Dissertations

United States Air Force (USAF) operations rely on sortie generation, a complex system involving aircraft maintenance, operational planning, munitions, security forces, and aircrew. Failures in any of these areas can jeopardize a mission, and extreme weather events such as lightning, high winds, and snow further complicate operations. This thesis examines the impact of extreme weather on sortie generation, focusing on developing a data-driven discrete-event simulation (DES) to predict generation timelines and identify high-risk areas. The model allows users to adjust key inputs, including the month, number of aircraft, processing times, and personnel/equipment availability. By simulating real-world conditions, the model helps …

Heterogeneous Boid Swarm Performance Under Environmental And Neighbor Communication Link Variability, Jonathan C. Oxborrow Mar 2025

Heterogeneous Boid Swarm Performance Under Environmental And Neighbor Communication Link Variability, Jonathan C. Oxborrow

Theses and Dissertations

Artificial swarms are of growing interest in numerous fields and use cases. As their utilization increases drones and robots with different capabilities will be required to coordinate for task completion thus creating heterogeneous swarms. Swarm individuals generally communicate with all neighbors inside their sensor range generating a significant amount of message traffic. Previous research of a heterogeneous group in a non-physical environment has shown that restricting communication to only one neighbor of each different capability maintained performance. This work applies that finding to a heterogeneous boid swarm with the addition of varied environmental conditions. The swarm is comprised of three …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Vascular stabilization is a mechanosensitive process, in part driven by blood flow. Here, we demonstrate the involvement of the mechanosensitive ion channel, Piezo1, in promoting arterial accumulation of vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) during zebrafish development. Using a series of small molecule antagonists or agonists to temporally regulate Piezo1 activity, we identified a role for the Piezo1 channel in regulating klf2a, a blood flow responsive transcription factor, expression levels and altered targeting of vSMCs between arteries and veins. Increasing Piezo1 activity suppressed klf2a and increased vSMC association with the cardinal vein, while inhibition of Piezo1 activity increased klf2a levels and …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive form of brain cancer that is highly resistant to therapy due to significant intra-tumoral heterogeneity. The lack of robust in vitro models to study early tumor progression has hindered the development of effective therapies. Here, this study develops engineered GBM organoids (eGBOs) harboring GBM subtype-specific oncogenic mutations to investigate the underlying transcriptional regulation of tumor progression. Single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analyses revealed that these mutations disrupt normal neurodevelopment gene regulatory networks resulting in changes in cellular composition and spatial organization. Upon xenotransplantation into immunodeficient mice, eGBOs form tumors that recapitulate the transcriptional and spatial landscape …

Spatial Histomorphometry Reveals That Local Peripheral Nerves Modulate But Are Not Required For Skeletal Adaptation To Applied Load In Mice, Alec T Beeve, Mohamed G Hassan, Anna Li, Nicole Migotsky, Matthew J Silva, Erica L Scheller Mar 2025

Spatial Histomorphometry Reveals That Local Peripheral Nerves Modulate But Are Not Required For Skeletal Adaptation To Applied Load In Mice, Alec T Beeve, Mohamed G Hassan, Anna Li, Nicole Migotsky, Matthew J Silva, Erica L Scheller

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Mechanical loading is required for bone health and results in skeletal adaptation to optimize strength. Local nerve axons, particularly within the periosteum, may respond to load-induced biomechanical and biochemical cues. However, their role in the bone anabolic response remains controversial. We hypothesized that spatial alignment of periosteal nerves with sites of load-induced bone formation would clarify this relationship. To achieve this, we developed RadialQuant, a custom tool for spatial histomorphometry. Tibiae of control and neurectomized (sciatic/femoral nerve cut) pan-neuronal Baf53b-tdTomato reporter mice were loaded for 5 days. Bone formation and periosteal nerve axon density were then quantified simultaneously in non-decalcified …
