Cannabis In The Clink: An Argument In Favor Of Medical Marijuana For Disabled Inmates, Sophia Dechurch
Cannabis In The Clink: An Argument In Favor Of Medical Marijuana For Disabled Inmates, Sophia Dechurch
Journal of Law and Health
In recent decades, medical marijuana programs have become commonplace, and most states in the United States of America are ready to accept marijuana as a natural alternative to treat symptoms of certain conditions such as chronic pain, cancer, mental illness, multiple sclerosis (MS), HIV/AIDS, and substance use disorder; as such, medical marijuana is readily accessible to those who have a qualifying diagnosis – the exception being those who are incarcerated. Although disability, substance abuse, and mental illness are prevalent among those under state supervision, these individuals are effectively prohibited from enjoying the benefits of medical marijuana. This Note will provide …
Regionalism And The Federal Reserve Banks, Kathryn Judge, Lev Menand
Regionalism And The Federal Reserve Banks, Kathryn Judge, Lev Menand
Faculty Scholarship
Regionalism is central to our country’s central banking system. Rather than rely on a single organization to set monetary policy and oversee banks, Congress created a multiplicity of bodies including twelve Federal Reserve Banks (FRBs), each designed to operate in a different part of the country. These FRBs are an early and undertheorized example of how the federal government uses regional bodies to formulate and administer federal policy. When they were first authorized in 1913, their regional character assuaged concerns about centralizing power over the economy. Today, the FRBs continue to play a number of important roles, helping to shape …

Widespread Detection Of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides In Australian Native Marsupial Carnivores, Michael T. Lohr, Cheryl Anne Lohr, Judy Dunlop, Melissa Snape, Stephanie Pulsford, Evan Webb, Robert A. Davis
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) have been detected in non-target wildlife species worldwide but information on exposure in Australian mammals is extremely limited. To address this, we analysed liver tissue from the five largest sized species of native Australian carnivorous and scavenging mammals for all SGARs currently used in Australia. A total of 52 individual animals from five dasyurid species were tested for exposure to ARs with 26 individuals (50 %) testing positive. Eleven individuals (21 %) tested positive for more than one AR compound, and two individuals tested positive for three types of AR. This study is the first to document …

Musculoskeletal Injury In Australian Infantry Personnel: A Cross-Sectional Study To Understand Prevention Priorities, Joanne Stannard, Caroline Finch, Paula Dabovich, Lauren Fortington
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Musculoskeletal injury patterns are under-investigated in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. Subsequently, more evidence is needed to support injury prevention processes in this population. One difficulty in collecting injury information to monitor injury patterns within combat populations accurately is known injury concealment behaviors in such populations. This study aims to examine musculoskeletal injury epidemiology within Australian infantry battalions using a tailored approach to mitigate reporting avoidance. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study using an anonymous online survey captured musculoskeletal injury information directly from personnel serving within 2 Australian infantry battalions. The survey requested information on participants’ injury frequency in …

retreatment procedure was done for both groups using the XP-endo Rise instruments. The time required …
Accommodating Transportation To Work: How Courts Fail To Protect People With Disabilities By Inconsistently Interpreting The Ada’S Requirements To Provide Reasonable Accommodations To Employees, Tara Kniep
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has played a critical role in helping people with disabilities function with greater ease in an inaccessible world. However, it is not perfect and leaves many people without the accommodations they need. One of the many accommodations not directly and consistently protected by the ADA is transportation to and from work. While many Americans have enjoyed the work-from-home boom caused by the pandemic, there are many others that are forced to take remote jobs simply because they cannot secure safe and reliable transportation to and from work due to disability. This significantly narrows their …

Law, Music, Statutory Interpretation, And Schubert, Norman P. Ho
Hofstra Law Review
The law and humanities field has been dominated by law and literature. Legal scholars have, for example, analogized judges to literary authors and have tried to show how the study of literature and law can enrich both subjects. Law and music, however, has received relatively less attention. This Article argues, on its most macroscopic level, that the relationship between law and music is very close, just like the close relationship between law and literature. Previous scholarly literature in the law and music field has spoken about the affinities between law and music, but mostly on a general level and with …

The unsustainable harvest and consumption of wild animals destabilizes both wildlife populations and the human livelihoods that depend upon them. In coastal landscapes, the overexploitation of terrestrial resources can increase pressures on marine ecosystems, and vice versa. We explore populations' ability to mitigate hunting pressure by bolstering marine livelihood strategies, assessing whether Malagasy people (or aggregated households) (1) transfer harvest pressure and consumption from oceans to forests in times of lower fisheries yields and (2) habitually exploit both marine and terrestrial resources. We also evaluate the diversity of fishers' and hunters' methods used and species targeted, as reliance on a …
Retaliation And Confrontation Of The State, Jon Mcneal
Retaliation And Confrontation Of The State, Jon Mcneal
Vanderbilt Law Review
Popular resistance to the weaponization of government has eroded in America. On the political Right, the post-Reagan consensus favoring limited government has given way to a new generation of leaders—like Vice President J.D. Vance and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis—who openly advocate for using state power against their political opponents. Collectively they are the New Right: a populist, antiestablishment, conservative movement opposing pluralistic systems, institutions, and cultural elites. While both political liberals and conservatives have wielded state power against their adversaries, leveraging state power to reward friends and punish enemies is fundamental to the New Right’s worldview. Following German jurist Carl …

Despite decades of interventions aiming to transform the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce to be more inclusive and diverse, little progress has been made in creating long-lasting, sustainable change. For a long period of time, the STEM workforce has been described as a leaky pipeline. While there has been some utility to thinking about the STEM workforce in this way, in this article, we discuss how characterizing the STEM workforce as a leaky pipeline can impede the design of innovative interventions that contribute to sustainable change toward a more inclusive scientific enterprise. As an alternative, we join others …

Innovative Efficiency Measurement Using Stackelberg Games And Neutrosophic Numbers, Ali Asghar Tatlari, Bijan Rahmani Perchkolaei, Farhad Hosseinzadeh Lotfi
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This paper addresses the challenge of measuring efficiency in systems with two components using Stackelberg game theory and neutrosophic numbers to handle data uncertainty. Unlike traditional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models that treat Decision Making Units (DMUs) as black boxes, we propose a new neutrosophic Network DEA (NDEA) model to compute efficiency scores for each division. By applying Stackelberg game theory, we break down the system's efficiency scores into sub-system efficiencies, providing a more detailed assessment of performance. Our proposed model represents a significant contribution to the literature by developing a two-stage Network Slack Based Measure (NSBM) model. This model …

Applications Of Archaeal Antioxidant Coenzyme M As An Agricultural Biostimulant, Jeremy Hunter Brown
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
As the demand to meet global food security goals continue to increase, the need to increase efficiency and productivity of agricultural output also rises. This calls for innovative and cost-effective methods for improving plant growth and yield. Here we explore how antioxidants, molecules that inhibit oxidation and are necessary for redox based signaling and redox homeostasis, can be utilized as chemical biostimulants. Specifically, we investigated Coenzyme M, an antioxidant from archaea that holds potential economic advantages over other antioxidants. Chapter 1 provides a comprehensive review of antioxidants and how exogenously application of them affects plant growth and biology, highlighting the …

Evaluate A Personal-Sized Seedless Watermelon Grown In High Tunnels, Wenjing Guan
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
Growing personal-sized seedless watermelons in high tunnels is not a common practice in the U.S. However, as high tunnel adoption increases and farmers gain experience in using them for specialty crop production, there is a need to evaluate nontraditional crops to improve crop rotation within these structures. In this study, we evaluated the performance of a personal-sized seedless watermelon grown in a high tunnel system. This seedless watermelon cultivar was selected because of its thin rind, tender flesh, and high sugar content. The combination of these fruit traits may make it particularly attractive for local food markets. Additionally, we compared …
The Role Of Mthfr Gene Mutation In Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Exploring Potential Correlations With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Anxiety, Heba Mehmood
All NMU Master's Theses
One of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is often co-occurring with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis of ADHD is agreed to be a prevalent problem. The methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene has been identified as a possible contributor to ADHD. The goal of this research is to decrease the frequency at which ADHD is misdiagnosed by investigating the correlation between the MTHFR gene at the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) C677T to ADHD and anxiety. A group of 80 participants’ DNA samples were collected through cheek swabs following IRB approval. Participants …

Exploring Oxylipins In Host–Microbe Interactions And Their Impact On Infection And Immunity, Robert J. Neff, Christopher D. Radka
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Plasma lipids are essential components of biological systems, transported through interactions with proteins to maintain cellular functions. These lipids exist in various forms, such as fatty acids, glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, sterols, and prenol lipids, derived from dietary intake, adipose tissue, and biosynthesis. While the association between certain fatty acids and cardiovascular diseases has been widely recognized, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) exhibit cardioprotective effects, reducing risks of arrhythmias and heart-related mortality. This is due to their role in the production of eicosanoids, which modulate inflammation. Chronic inflammation, particularly in obesity, is significantly influenced by fatty acids, with saturated fatty acids promoting …

The removal of small molecular weight charged compounds from aqueous solutions using membrane remains a challenge. In this study, polysulfone (PSf)- and sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK)-based membranes were fabricated via non- solvent induced phase separation process (NIPS) using N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent and water as non-solvent. Membranes were characterized structurally and morphologically, followed by toxicity assessment conducted before and after filtration, both with and without annealing at various pH values to evaluate potential leaching of trapped solvent from the membrane pores. Additionally, membrane performance was characterized using binary mixtures of cationic and anionic dyes. The results demonstrated selective filtration …

Introduction: Septic patients have low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), which is a risk factor. Replenishing HDLs with synthetic HDLs (sHDLs) has shown promise as a therapy for sepsis. This study aimed to develop a computational approach to design and test new types of sHDLs for sepsis treatment. Methods: We used a three-step computational approach to design sHDL nanoparticles based on the structure of HDLs and their binding to endotoxins. We tested the efficacy of these sHDLs in two sepsis mouse models—cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced and P. aeruginosa-induced sepsis models—and assessed their impact on inflammatory signaling in cells. Results: …

Effects Of Antidiabetic Drugs On The Level Of Serum Uric Acid In Patients Who Have Type 2 Diabetes, Gang Wang, Guixia Wang
Saudi Medical Journal
ABSTRACT Hyperuricemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are interconnected, in that each disorder increases risk for the other. Some antidiabetic drugs may decrease the level of serum uric acid (SUA). This narrative review describes the effects of multiple antidiabetic drugs on the SUA level and their possible mechanisms of action in patients with T2DM. The results showed that sodium glucose contransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is), thiazolidinediones, metformin, and linagliptin decreased the SUA; insulin, sitagliptin, and alogliptin increased the SUA; and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), sulfonylureas, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitors had little effect on the SUA. Sodium glucose contransporter-2 inhibitors appeared …
