Animal production and livestock factsheets
Self-mustering yards (SMYs) are an important component of effective total grazing management in the pastoral regions. These yards are used to self-muster cattle, sheep and goats, as well as native browsers and feral animals as they enter the yards to access the water point.
Asking The Rights Questions: An Emgerency Action Exception To The Major Questions Doctrine, Mark Hager
Asking The Rights Questions: An Emgerency Action Exception To The Major Questions Doctrine, Mark Hager
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Congress delegates broad discretionary power to administrative agencies to respond to emergency situations, taking advantage of their extraordinary expertise and response speed. Yet these delegations are defined by a judicial rule known as the “Major Questions Doctrine.” The Major Questions Doctrine seeks to protect the separation of powers by preventing excessive use of executive power without clear delegation by Congress. Where a “major question” of vast economic or political significance is raised, it requires “clear” authorization in the delegating statute. During COVID-19, the Supreme Court used the doctrine to strike down several response programs, including: the Center for Disease Control’s …
Commercial Development Utilizing Faith And Business Innovation, Sandra Moon
Commercial Development Utilizing Faith And Business Innovation, Sandra Moon
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
In the evolving landscape of business and commerce, the intersection of faith and business innovation has become a topic of debate, particularly in a world that increasingly values efficiency, scalability, and profit. This dissertation examines the role of spirituality in business leadership. We will explore how Christian values, servant leadership, and heart-mind coherence contribute to a more sustainable, ethical, and community-driven business model. Through the lens of my family’s business, Sam Moon Group, I will explore how faith-based leadership can coexist with success and serve as its very foundation. The early journey of Sam Moon Trading Company, from a small …
Fragility And Strength In Times Of War: A Series Of Embroidered Watercolors, Alisha B. Whitman
Fragility And Strength In Times Of War: A Series Of Embroidered Watercolors, Alisha B. Whitman
Theses
This final project report follows the production of a series of embroidered watercolors that explore how war disrupts and can destroy the values which people manage to somehow both hold dear and take for granted. These values, such as peace and freedom, are fragile, and yet they can provide great strength in dark times. This dichotomy is explored through this body of work using the materials of painted paper and thread as symbols of both fragility and strength. Choosing to work with materials and methods historically seen as feminine work add additional meaning to that symbolism. Additionally, Jewish iconography and …

Liability Considerations For Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Projects In U.S. Waters, Korey Silverman-Roati, Martin Lockman, Romany M. Webb
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Scientists have identified a number of land- and ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (“CDR”) approaches. Ocean-based approaches, also known as marine CDR, hold great potential for uptake and sequestration of carbon dioxide. However, controlled field trials in the ocean are needed to better understand the efficacy and impacts of several marine CDR approaches. Legal considerations will have a major bearing on whether, when, where, and how such field research goes forward. Previous studies have analyzed the potential international and domestic legal framework applicable to marine CDR research and subsequent deployment (if that is ultimately deemed appropriate). However, relatively little research has …
Efficacy Of Immersive Virtual Reality Gameplay In Environmental Attitude Change: The Case Of Abandoned Offshore Oil Platforms In Santa Barbara, Arun Prasad Srinivasan Manoharan
Efficacy Of Immersive Virtual Reality Gameplay In Environmental Attitude Change: The Case Of Abandoned Offshore Oil Platforms In Santa Barbara, Arun Prasad Srinivasan Manoharan
Master's Theses
Public perception plays an important role in shaping conservation policies and decisions, especially in contested environmental spaces. Offshore oil platforms, historically viewed as environmental hazards, have been found to serve as marine habitats that support diverse marine life. However, public perception remains largely negative, influenced by concerns over pollution from past oil spill accidents. Traditional environmental education methods, such as lectures and documentaries, often fail to engage audiences effectively or shift entrenched opinions. This study explores the efficacy of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) gameplay in changing environmental attitudes, specifically in the context of abandoned offshore oil platforms in Santa Barbara, …

Soundhapticsvr: Head-Based Spatial Haptic Feedback For Accessible Sounds In Virtual Reality For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Users, Pratheep Kumar Chelladurai
Theses
Virtual Reality (VR) systems use immersive spatial audio that provide more localized sound awareness to convey critical information. However, these audio cues are often inaccessible to individuals who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (DHH). To address this, we developed, a head-based haptic system designed to enable localizing and convert- ing audio signals directly into haptic feedback using multi-channel acoustic haptic actuators. We evaluated through three studies. The preliminary study determined the maximum tactile frequency threshold perceivable on different regions of the head of DHH users when a VR headset is attached. This was followed by a study to deter- mine the …

Biologists aim to explain patterns of growth, reproduction and ageing that characterize life histories, yet we are just beginning to understand the proximate mechanisms that generate this diversity. Existing research in this area has focused on telomeres but has generally overlooked the telomere's most direct mediator, the shelterin protein complex. Shelterin proteins physically interact with the telomere to shape its shortening and repair. They also regulate metabolism and immune function, suggesting a potential role in life history variation in the wild. However, research on shelterin proteins is uncommon outside of biomolecular work. Intraspecific analyses can play an important role in …

The effects of single chromosome number change—dysploidy – mediating diversification remain poorly understood. Dysploidy modifies recombination rates, linkage, or reproductive isolation, especially for one-fifth of all eukaryote lineages with holocentric chromosomes. Dysploidy effects on diversification have not been estimated because modeling chromosome numbers linked to diversification with heterogeneity along phylogenies is quantitatively challenging. We propose a new state-dependent diversification model of chromosome evolution that links diversification rates to dysploidy rates considering heterogeneity and differentiates between anagenetic and cladogenetic changes. We apply this model to Carex (Cyperaceae), a cosmopolitan flowering plant clade with holocentric chromosomes. We recover two distinct modes of …

Using county-level data from the United States, we assessed allometric scaling relationships of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, deaths and age structure within and across the first four major waves of the pandemic (wild-type, alpha, delta, omicron). Results generally indicate that the burden of cases disproportionately impacted larger-sized counties, while the burden of deaths disproportionately impacted smaller counties. This may be partially due to multiple interacting social mechanisms, including a higher proportion of older adults who live in smaller counties. Moreover, these likely social mechanisms interacting with vaccinations and virus waves created a dynamic pattern whereby the rate and magnitude of …
The Biphasic Effect Of Lipopolysaccharide On Membrane Potential, Maria E. Hadjisavva, Robin L. Cooper
The Biphasic Effect Of Lipopolysaccharide On Membrane Potential, Maria E. Hadjisavva, Robin L. Cooper
Biology Faculty Publications
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from certain strains of Gram-negative bacteria can induce a rapid (<1 s) hyperpolarization of membrane potential, followed by a gradual depolarization exceeding the initial resting membrane potential. Through overexpression of a Drosophila ORK1 two-pore-domain K+ channel (K2P) in larval muscles and altering the external concentrations of K+ and Na+ ions, it is clear that the hyperpolarization is due to activating K2P channels and the depolarization is due to promoting an inward Na+ leak. When the external Na+ concentration is negligible, the LPS-delayed depolarization is dampened. The hyperpolarization induced by LPS can exceed −100 mV when external K+ and Na+ concentrations are lowered. These results indicate direct action by LPS on ion channels independently of immune …1>

Food spoilage in the United States is not simply a logistical inconvenience. It is one of the most underappreciated sources of economic and environmental waste in the country's food system. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meat are routinely lost during storage and transport not because operators lack the will to prevent it, but because conventional cold chain management has historically lacked the tools to detect and respond to deteriorating conditions before damage becomes irreversible. This paper examines how the convergence of Internet of Things (IoT) sensing networks and data analytics platforms is reshaping what cold chain operators can know, predict, …

The Green Revolution has significantly contributed to agricultural development. However, it has also caused environmental damage due to excessive use of agricultural inputs and land exploitation. To promote sustainability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), organic farming has been recommended to improve and maintain agroecosystems. In Bali Province, Indonesia, the concept of Tri Hita Karana (THK), a form of local wisdom, has guided farmers in implementing the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technique introduced by the government. This study explored how organic rice farming integrates local wisdom, assessed farmers’ knowledge and attitudes towards SRI, and examined government support …

Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Enterobacteriaceae, acquire antibiotic resistance via horizontal transmission of resistance genes in poultry farms that give rise to multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. The presence of MDR strains that are potentially pathogenic and zoonotic poses a concern to animal and human health. The aims of this study were to isolate MDR, potentially pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae from Philippine native chicken (PNC) and to analyze the genome of a representative MDR isolate to gain insights into the mechanisms, acquisition, and transmissibility of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Cloacal swabs from PNC were used to isolate putative Salmonella that were then tested for antimicrobial …

Lake Batur in Bangli Regency, Bali Province is a priority area for ecological quality restoration in Indonesia due to its vulnerability to environmental changes caused by diverse and intensive utilization. Agricultural activities, fisheries, and tourism affect the lake’s water quality, leading to the uncontrolled growth of water weeds such as water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes). To determine the relationship between water quality, community activities, and water weed presence, water samples were collected from 9 locations consisting of residential, tourist, aquaculture, and agricultural areas. In situ analysis was then conducted to measure turbidity, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved …

Speech-In-Noise Testing For Adults, Cecilia Talarico
Speech-In-Noise Testing For Adults, Cecilia Talarico
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Speech perception is defined as a process “between the reception of the acoustic signal at the eardrum and any conscious introspection about the quality of the percept it evokes or the mnemonic, affective, or semantic associates it arouses.” (Phillips, 1998). Several factors can affect an individual’s perception of speech: the type of speech, type of noise, binaural versus monaural listening, age, male or female speaker, listener or speaker of a non-native language, cognition, central nervous system neuroanatomical differences, and hearing loss. While just a single one of these factors in isolation can create adverse conditions to perceive speech, it is …

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are revolutionizing the field of interventional surgeries in the medical industry. Their high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and a similar elastic modulus to natural bone make porous Mg-based structures potential candidates for orthopedic implants and tissue engineering scaffolding. However, fabricating and machining porous Mg-based structures is challenging due to their complexity and difficulties in achieving uniform or gradient porosity. This review aims to thoroughly explore various fabrication procedures used to create metallic scaffolds, with a specific focus on those made from Mg-based alloys. Both traditional manufacturing techniques, including the directional solidification of metal-gas eutectic technique, pattern casting, …

While a rich set of putative cis-regulatory sequences involved in mouse fetal development have been annotated recently on the basis of chromatin accessibility and histone modification patterns, delineating their role in developmentally regulated gene expression continues to be challenging. To fill this gap, here we mapped chromatin contacts between gene promoters and distal sequences across the genome in seven mouse fetal tissues and across six developmental stages of the forebrain. We identified 248,620 long-range chromatin interactions centered at 14,138 protein-coding genes and characterized their tissue-to-tissue variations and developmental dynamics. Integrative analysis of the interactome with previous epigenome and transcriptome datasets …

It is well-established that individuals with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it is not fully determined how insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are related to AD-related brain glucose metabolism abnormalities. For this aim, we performed a systematic review of the studies investigating the association between cerebral glucose metabolism and glycemic status, including diabetes, insulin resistance, or hyperglycemia. Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched (till February 2, 2025).
