Protein Digestibility Impacted By Bacillus Coagulans, Pasteurization And Protein Source In Ready-To-Drink Protein Beverages, Samantha L. Bass, Samantha L. Bass

Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to assess how to maximize the digestibility of protein in protein beverages utilizing various protein sources, differing temperature/storage combinations, and the addition of probiotics (Bacillus coagulans). The protein sources used included 3 milk proteins and 2 plant protein sources (micellar casein, milk protein concentrate, reduced-calcium milk protein concentrate, pea protein isolate, and soy protein isolate). Soy protein isolate was chosen because it is readily available and commonly used as a plant protein alternative. Pea protein isolate was chosen because it is a non-allergen, and similarly, it is readily available. Milk protein concentrates …

Biochar-Derived Photocatalysts For Pharmaceutical Waste Removal, A Sustainable Approach To Water Purification, Maryam Zahid, Zia Ul Haq Khan, Jingyu Sun, Nawshad Muhammad, Sana Sabahat, Noor Samad Shah, Jibran Iqbal

All Works

In the past few years, the utilization of pharmaceutical compounds has considerably increased to treat human and animal diseases. The pharmaceutical waste, processed or unprocessed, is being released into water systems. This contamination leads to the death of millions of people across the globe annually. Tailored treatment procedures are effectively employed to remove these compounds. However, many of these techniques suffer from high-cost apparatus, generation of secondary pollutants, and sludge etc. Conversely, adsorption combined with photocatalysis is an alternative, economical and efficient method for water remediation. This review delves deeper into the synthesis protocols of biochar derived photocatalysts and investigates …

Climate change could irreversibly modify Southern Ocean ecosystems. Marine ecosystem model (MEM) ensembles can assist policy making by projecting future changes and allowing the evaluation and assessment of alternative management approaches. However, projected changes in total consumer biomass from the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP) global MEM ensemble highlight an uncertain future for the Southern Ocean, indicating the need for a region-specific ensemble. A large source of model uncertainty originates from the Earth system models used to force FishMIP models, particularly future changes to lower trophic level biomass and sea-ice coverage. To build confidence in regional MEMs …

Climate change is affecting ocean temperature, acidity, currents, and primary production, causing shifts in species distributions, marine ecosystems, and ultimately fisheries. Earth system models simulate climate change impacts on physical and biogeochemical properties of future oceans under varying emissions scenarios. Coupling these simulations with an ensemble of global marine ecosystem models has indicated broad decreases of fish biomass with warming. However, regional details of these impacts remain much more uncertain. Here, we employ CMIP5 and CMIP6 climate change impact projections using two Earth system models coupled with four regional and nine global marine ecosystem models in 10 ocean regions to …

Optimizing Action Jrpg Combat For A More Engaging Experience, Jeffer Ng Mar 2025

Optimizing Action Jrpg Combat For A More Engaging Experience, Jeffer Ng

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The purpose of this project is to introduce a more engaging combat system for many JRPGs with real-time combat. Most games of this genre have similar combat systems, making it dull. Understandably, the game’s primary focus is world-building. As long as players feel immersed in the world, that is what makes a great RPG. However, combat is equally important to the immersion. Some JRPGs follow a similar combat script or style: a party of four, each with unique abilities and fighting styles, gets swapped based on the context to combo enemies and deal the maximum amount of damage. While it …

The Relationship Between Industry Regulation And The Quality Of Micro-Dramas, Shuoyu Yao Mar 2025

The Relationship Between Industry Regulation And The Quality Of Micro-Dramas, Shuoyu Yao

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This paper is a study on the micro-drama industry, exploring the reasons for a large number of low-quality micro-dramas. Specifically, there are two potential problems: (1) the industry value allocation model is unreasonable, so producing high-quality micro-dramas does not receive sufficient returns; (2) regulatory oversight of the industry is insufficient. To investigate this recent phenomenon and the underlying problems, we collected a dataset of 165 micro-dramas and use the newly introduced regulation on the micro-drama industry in June 2024 as a policy shock. The findings show that, before the new regulations were introduced, micro-dramas with higher quality in expression received …

Cryptosporidium Virus Integration Into The Host Cells, Alyssa Genaro

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Cryptosporidiosis is a disease that affects a large amount of people and having a high mortality rate for those that are immunocompromised such as the elderly and infants. The disease is linked to a parasite called Cryptosporidium parvum, which is mostly known to infect cattle and other mammals such as mice and humans. The parasite contains a double stranded RNA virus, the Cryspovirus (CSpV1) that has a non-enveloped icosahedral capsid, with a T=2* icosahedral symmetry. Little is known is known about the contribution of CSpV1 to the disease; In this study we show that infection of an immunocompromised mouse model …

Impact Of Polysaccharides On Advancing Plant-Based Meat Alternatives, Prashant Dahal, Clifford Hall, Srinivas Janaswamy Mar 2025

Impact Of Polysaccharides On Advancing Plant-Based Meat Alternatives, Prashant Dahal, Clifford Hall, Srinivas Janaswamy

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present

Plant-based meat products are a valued choice for vegetarians and others. Their production has been perceived as an innovation promoting animal welfare and sustainability. However, there are challenges in simulating desirable appearance, texture, and flavor using only plant-based protein sources. Polysaccharide addition during the formulation and texturization of plant proteins can improve the physi- cochemical and sensory properties of texturized protein products. In this regard, a clear understanding of the fundamental properties of polysaccharides is essential for transforming plant proteins into fibers or nonfilamentous protein aggregates. Enhancing water-holding capacity, gelation, and binding functionality is crucial for overcoming structural and textural …

A Snitch In Time Can Help Deport Nine: Proposing A Private Enforcement Scheme To Spur Self-Deportations, Ajay Gupta

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Any forcible deportation drive that the incoming Trump administration may undertake to remove some of the many millions of aliens illegally present in the country would be limited in scope, underscoring the importance of goading self-deportations for perceptibly reducing these aliens’ numbers by curtailing their employment opportunities. Based in part on Britain’s experience with eradicating child labor in the nineteenth century, the article proposes a scheme of private enforcement for rendering unemployable a large proportion of unauthorized aliens in the United States labor market today. The proposal comprises enacting a punitive tax on all compensation paid for the personal services …

In Government We Trust: Judicial Deference To Government Evidence In Removal Proceedings, Marie S. Celentino Mar 2025

In Government We Trust: Judicial Deference To Government Evidence In Removal Proceedings, Marie S. Celentino

Vanderbilt Law Review

On its face, the Form I-213 appears to be a humble bureaucratic form unremarkable to the untrained eye. In reality, this document alone can singularly sustain the federal government’s case for the deportation of a noncitizen in removal proceedings. The Form I-213 sits at the cradle of interlocking judicial and procedural norms within immigration practice that largely diminish the due process rights of noncitizens facing deportation. This Article sheds light on two important but relatively underexamined phenomena that undergird this system: how a disregard for evidentiary rules largely eliminates the government’s burden of proof in removal proceedings and how judicial …

Emoji Marketing: Toward A Theory Of Brand Paralinguistics, Jacob Almaguer, Reto Felix, Colleen M. Harmeling

Marketing Faculty Publications

Emojis, or pictographs that supplement or replace written language, have become ubiquitous in contemporary communication, including emoji marketing. Drawing on insights from linguistics and sign theory, the current research proposes an emoji marketing framework in which emoji symbolism (symbolic vs. iconic emoji use) affects consumers’ message appraisals (perceived message intimacy and clarity), which in turn influence brand cultural relevance (propositions P1 and P2). Emoji syntax (i.e., whether emojis are supplemented with text or not) and marketer-consumer group relatedness (shared vs. unshared group membership) moderate the relationship between emoji symbolism and consumers’ message appraisals. The framework suggests that messages that use …

2024–2025 Christmas Bird Counts, Don Paseka

Nebraska Bird Review

For the second year in a row, all twenty CBCs [Christmas Bird Counts] were run during the 2024–2025 season. The weather was generally cooperative, although five circles reported fog and two others had rain. Branched Oak-Seward was postponed a week due to icy conditions on the originally scheduled day. The average high temperature for all circles on count day was 41 and the average low temperature was 22. Because December had remained relatively mild, there was a good deal of open water, which encouraged many species of water birds to remain. Consequently, most of the circles reported species totals higher …

Nebraska Bird Review

Since I started a few years ago to compare each season’s reports with the status of each species as presented in BONO (Species Accounts – Birds of Nebraska – Online), I had expected that “Routine reports” would apply to an increasing number of species as the BONO database firmed up, but this hasn’t happened. My comments from last winter continue to be valid this winter, now for the third winter in a row: As was the case for winter 2022–2023, the big general story was the large number of reports of tardy fall migrants and unexpectedly northerly occurrences in mid-winter… …

Principles For The Design Of Visual Progress Bars To Improve Motivation In Online Learning, Tania Shotts Williams Mar 2025

Principles For The Design Of Visual Progress Bars To Improve Motivation In Online Learning, Tania Shotts Williams

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Progress bars are used in many user interfaces to indicate user progress or wait time. Their main role is to set user expectations, and they can be auditory or visual. The use of visual progress bars is found in many applications, including games and is accepted as a strategy for gamifying user experiences. However, little research exists regarding the design of this tool, especially in how to leverage design elements to impact motivational affordance. Since progress bars are an element to gamify user interfaces, it benefits researchers and designers to have a deeper understanding of how to design the tool …
