Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
In human organizations, there are group ways of conducting themselves, the interaction between members, and internal dynamics, among others that make the organization maintain a specific behavior as if it were an individual. This is the so-called Organizational Behavior, which is important to identify within a particular organization to improve the performance and efficiency of the entity. There are four types of organizational behavior models, namely, autocratic, custodial, supportive, and collegial. This paper aims to classify the organization that belongs to the office of the Academic Vice-Rector of the National Agrarian University of La Selva in Peru. To do this …
Proposed Evaluation Of Nonpharmacological Treatments And Therapies For Paclitaxel Based Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (Cipn), Mackenzie Lesczcynski
Proposed Evaluation Of Nonpharmacological Treatments And Therapies For Paclitaxel Based Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (Cipn), Mackenzie Lesczcynski
D.U.Quark
Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) is a common complication in breast cancer patients receiving Paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic agent (1). CIPN symptoms range from numbness to extreme pain and sensitivity in bodily extremities, forcing chemotherapy to be halted (2). The mechanism of this side effect is not well understood and there is no standard pharmacological treatment available to improve effects. Nonpharmacological treatments have been attempted on small patient cohorts, but there are no conclusive findings (3). Due to this, we believe that a comprehensive murine model must be developed in order to assess nonpharmacological treatment efficacy and potential molecular targets for pharmacological …

Next-Generation Biomedical Implants And Stimuli Responsive Soft Optical Arrays Via Surface Functionalized Elastomeric Materials, John M. Kapitan
Next-Generation Biomedical Implants And Stimuli Responsive Soft Optical Arrays Via Surface Functionalized Elastomeric Materials, John M. Kapitan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The demands of emerging technologies, such as soft robotics, stretchable electronics, and next generation biomedical implants, has led to the development of diverse polymeric and hybrid organic/inorganic materials specifically tuned to meet these challenges. These materials typically have low Young’s moduli and are inert with high chemical stability. However, this has led to materials that are static in nature, lacking any meaningful way of responding to changes in their environment and adapting to these changes. This has driven a shift towards the design, manufacturing, and characterization of various stimuli responsive surfaces, relying on precise control of surface chemical coatings and …
Evelyn Waugh And The Problems Of Representing Conversion, Alec J. Miller
Evelyn Waugh And The Problems Of Representing Conversion, Alec J. Miller
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Evelyn Waugh’s conversion to Catholicism in 1930 raised the question of how his writing would change. The satires he wrote before his conversion, Decline and Fall (1928) and Vile Bodies (1930), are hilarious but have no spiritual vision. Critics attacked his second novel after his conversion, A Handful of Dust (1934), for not being fitting for a Catholic writer to have made. Yet, Waugh makes a religious point in A Handful of Dust, exploring the wages of spiritual apathy without showing a path out. Later in Waugh’s career, he makes his finest attempt in the Sword of Honour trilogy …
Investigating Appalachian Medical Students’ Perceived Supports And Inhibitors To Their Aspirations Using Habitus And Capital, Jason Hedrick, Erin Mchenry-Sorber
Investigating Appalachian Medical Students’ Perceived Supports And Inhibitors To Their Aspirations Using Habitus And Capital, Jason Hedrick, Erin Mchenry-Sorber
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study examined Appalachian medical student aspiration facilitators and impediments. Using semi-structured interviews from ten medical students, findings were analyzed with habitus, and cultural and social capital, with an emphasis on Appalachia as place. Parents established postsecondary expectations early. Family circumstances were influential, including relatives in healthcare, or attending private school. Success with STEMM and haphazard healthcare interactions stoked further interest. However, families approached medical school from a risk narrative, reconsidering what was a part of their child’s imagined future. Physician interactions often provided mixed guidance and resulted in students questioning their career trajectory. Findings confirm and highlight the value …
The Effects Of Internalizing Symptoms And Attentional Difficulties On Adolescent Outcomes Of The Peers Intervention, Madeleine Kathleen Guell
The Effects Of Internalizing Symptoms And Attentional Difficulties On Adolescent Outcomes Of The Peers Intervention, Madeleine Kathleen Guell
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) is effective at improving the social skills of autistic youth. However, few studies have examined the suitability of PEERS for youth with comorbid mental health concerns. Research suggests that autistic youth are highly likely to have co-occurring disorders such as internalizing and attentional disorders, which are linked with poorer social skills in autistic youth. The current study explores the effects of internalizing symptoms and attentional difficulties on outcomes of the PEERS intervention by examining the relationship between these symptoms and 3 composite outcome variables (i.e., social awareness, social interaction, …

Long-Term Bone Changes At Edentulous Sites, Teerarat Neal Phuatrakoon
Master's Theses (2009 -)
BACKGROUND: Tooth loss is a debilitating occurrence that may affect the patient’s emotional and mental well-being. Delays in necessary restorative treatment may occur dependent on the patient’s finances or other elaborate dental treatment plans. Prosthetically guided implants have become the standard of care regarding definitive treatment, however there is a lack of evidence discussing the stability of edentulous sites if deferment of treatment is required. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to measure long-term changes of the edentulous alveolar ridge (height and width) and anatomical structures (e.g. sinus floor, inferior alveolar canal). METHODS: Charts of patients with at least …

Human Rights And Foreign Policy: South Africa's Genocide Complaint Against Israel At The International Court Of Justice, Penelope Andrews
Articles & Chapters
On December 21st, 2023 the South African Government filed an urgent application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the wake of Israel's military activities in Gaza in response to the attack in Israel on October 7th in which more than 1,200 Israeli citizens were killed and several hundred were taken as hostages. The Israeli government responded to the attacks and the taking of hostages by launching a military campaign into Gaza, with the express purpose of destroying Hamas and especially its ability to attack Israel in the way that it did on October 7th. The first few days …

The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) test diagnoses relative adrenal insufficiency (RAI) or critical illness–related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI). Initially, guidelines recommended corticosteroid/glucocorticoid (GC) therapy for septic patients with RAI, but later trials did not show a survival benefit, leading to updated guidelines that abandon targeting RAI or CIRCI. Recent studies with an RAI mouse model showed a clear survival benefit from GC therapy in mice with RAI, suggesting that inconclusive GC clinical trials might be due to issues with the ACTH test rather than targeting RAI. To investigate, we performed the ACTH test in septic mice. Interestingly, the ACTH test identified most …
Production Of Biofertilizer And Biohydrogen Via Anaerobic Fermentation Of Ulva Spp.: A Feasibility Study For Reducing Coastal Eutrophication And Generating Clean Energy, Katie Graves
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This feasibility study investigates the potential of anaerobic fermentation of Ulva spp., a locally sourced macroalga, using Clostridium acetobutylicum to produce biofertilizer and biohydrogen. It further examines the viability of Ulva as fermentation biomass by identifying seasonal trends in nutrient concentrations of biofertilizer and gas production while determining the impact of the preservation method on gas yield. The biofertilizer used for nutrient analysis was produced from fresh Ulva harvested within 24 hours prior to fermentation. Orthophosphate (PO4-P), nitrite (NO2-N), nitrate (NO3-N), and ammonia (NH3-N) concentrations were analyzed post-fermentation using spectrophotometric flow injection analysis (FIA). Potassium (K+) concentrations were measured using …
Aha And Hmm: The Joy Of Writing Senryu, John J. Han
Aha And Hmm: The Joy Of Writing Senryu, John J. Han
KAUPA Letters
Senryu, a satiric and often humorous counterpart to haiku, emerged in mid-18th century Japan as a form of popular self-expression among the rising merchant class. Named after the poet and editor Karai Senryu, this genre focuses on human nature, social behavior, and everyday life rather than the seasonal themes central to haiku. Traditionally composed in a 5-7-5 syllabic structure, modern English-language senryu are often written in free style with fewer than 17 syllables. While frequently humorous, senryu can also capture serious aspects of human experience, including hardship and social issues. Unlike haiku, which encourages contemplation, senryu aims to evoke immediate …

Diet selection informs the health, fitness, and behavior of wild predators. Due to assumptions that vertebrate prey contains similar compositions of macronutrients (i.e., protein, carbohydrates, and lipids), whole prey items traditionally define carnivore diets. However, increasing evidence suggests that prey differ in terms of their macronutrient compositions, particularly relative to body size. Furthermore, omnivorous predators, like coyotes (Canis latrans), integrate both prey and nonprey diet items whose macronutrient compositions vary. This is particularly important in urbanized systems, which introduce or alter the distributions of prey (e.g., domestic pets) and nonprey (e.g., ornamental plants) foods in ways that contribute …
Death Becomes Us: The Consumptive Body In Nineteenth-Century Gothic Literature, Jennifer Marie Mcmahon
Death Becomes Us: The Consumptive Body In Nineteenth-Century Gothic Literature, Jennifer Marie Mcmahon
All NMU Master's Theses
This thesis examines the impacts of nineteenth-century tuberculosis epidemics on gothic literature published between 1842 and 1872. In this period of time, tuberculosis was the leading cause of death in the United States and in Europe, killing an estimated one in seven people. Using theoretical lenses of psychoanalysis and material ecocriticism, this project considers borders between material bodies—specifically those between bacterial agents and humans—to be illusory and socially constructed. The first chapter focuses on the ways in which representations of tuberculosis, and its associated entanglement with the environment, appear in the work of two authors from the United States: Edgar …

This study examines longer-run usage frequency of Mirt improved biomass cookstoves (ICS), one of the most important ICS promoted in Ethiopia. Mirt has been shown to improve childhood health, and reduce fuelwood consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, but to generate those benefits, households must regularly use it over extended periods. Thus, this paper focuses on longer-run use using stove surface temperature data over five time intervals. We find that, close to its estimated lifespan, 63 per cent of households had their stoves in place after more than 3.5 years. Of those who abandoned their stoves, over 80 per cent did …
Jenifer Michaels. A History., Farrah Freibert
Jenifer Michaels. A History., Farrah Freibert

Jenifer Michaels was a legendary subcultural star within the gay liberation film milieu of 1970s Los Angeles. Taking three paths to approaching and interpreting Michaels’s filmic and archival image, this article is structured by an analysis of Michaels’s documentary appearances, her performance in sex films, and her statements published in a textual interview. Working against what I call historiographic gentrification, the article utilizes archival and micro-historical methods to think through Michaels’s subcultural stardom as a nexus for complicating biography, documentary, and the politics of veracity.

A Study Of Conceptual Primitive Elimination: Embedding Ingest Into Ptrans, Jamie C. Macbeth, Alexis Kilayko
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
In cognitive systems and cognitive linguistics, primitive decomposition systems attempt to explain cognitive phenomena by breaking things down into conceptual building blocks and provide rich and flexible representations for systems. A prime example is the Schank–Minsky Conceptual Dependency Trans-frames system, which maintains a commitment to keeping the number of primitives small and allowing them to be combined in complex ways in representing meaning, knowledge, and dynamic episodic memory. Motivated by the desire to keep the set of primitives small, this paper describes an effort to eliminate the Conceptual Dependency INGEST primitive and reconstitute its uses through combinations of the CD …

Spatial management is a widely used technique to protect sessile species or habitats. Protection of essential fish habitat is increasinglybeing recognized globally within fisheries management policies, requiring further practical assessments within temperate fisheries. Weprovide a case study for the efficacy of spatially protecting nursery sites for a highly mobile species—the European bass (Dicentrarchuslabrax). Using acoustic telemetry, 146 individual fish were tracked for up to 812 days across three independent protected bass nurseryareas in the Southwest UK. Within site boundaries commercial fisheries are seasonally restricted to protect vulnerable life stages.Tagged fish were re-detected >5 million times. Detections at receivers highlighted activity …

The Impact Of Hyperglycemia On Post-Reperfusion Outcomes In Patients With Hyperacute Ischemic Stroke, Nicole Schumacher
The Impact Of Hyperglycemia On Post-Reperfusion Outcomes In Patients With Hyperacute Ischemic Stroke, Nicole Schumacher
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Stroke is a major contributor to disability in the United States, with ischemic stroke accounting for approximately 87% of all cases. The use of approved reperfusion therapies, including intravenous thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and mechanical thrombectomy, has significantly improved functional outcomes for ischemic stroke patients. However, hyperglycemia at the time of hospital arrival is associated with worse outcomes, including increased infarct growth, higher rates of disability, and elevated mortality. Despite this, current stroke guidelines neither exclude hyperglycemic patients from receiving reperfusion therapy nor recommend glucose management during the hyperacute phase of care. While recent studies suggest that mild …

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
The Swarthmore College Matchbox is used by hundreds of students and faculty every day. The energy expended during the activity is dissipated and never transformed into useful energy. The focus of this project will be to retrofit pre-existing gym equipment so that any expended energy can be captured and converted into electrical energy. By using non-intrusive and compact mechanisms to design the model, the project would aim to provide renewable energy sources without drastically changing the workout experience itself. The first phase will be focused on generating enough electricity to power a small device, such as a cellular device, to …

Barnacle nauplii swim in conditions described by a low Reynolds number of around 2 as a result of their small size. It is not fully understood how their method of swimming allows them to move around in an environment with such a low Reynolds number. Additionally, it is unknown to what degree their horns, tail, and the hair-like bristles on their appendages contribute to their motion and their survival. The robot prototype created for this project mimics the features and swimming method of nauplii in order to help study nauplius locomotion and the functions of their unique morphology. Additionally, this …

Organic waste is oftentimes poorly managed and directed to landfill and incineration, as more sustainable alternatives such as traditional composting are not always accessible. Swarthmore College has a robust composting partnership offsite, however, it does not leverage avenues for waste stream circularity on campus to its full potential. Vermicomposting, composting that incorporates earthworms (Eisenia fetida), consists of a method to achieve small-scale and accessible composting. The goal of this project was to create an on-campus, low-maintenance, replicable, and sustainable vermicomposter to efficiently repurpose food waste from Swarthmore’s dining hall into nutrient-rich soil amendments for the adjacent Our Food Garden. …
