Think Like An Otter: Behavioral Problem-Solving In Fresh-Water Otters, Madison N. Vale, Miranda C. Ibarra

Posters - 2025

This study examines problem-solving in Asian Small-Clawed Otters (ASCOs), focusing on their cognitive processes during puzzle-solving tasks. The sample included two social groups of four otters: Eleanor and Dustin in one group, and Saki and Wonton in the other. Both groups were presented with a series of puzzles, and their responses were video recorded for coding. The relationship between sex and social learning was explored, but no significant findings were observed. Additionally, it was tested whether the number of strategies used and engagement duration predicted success; neither factor was a significant predictor. Overall, the results were inconclusive, offering no clear …

Demystifying Proactive Customer Helpers: Where Do We Find Them?, Estelle Van Tonder, Sam Fullerton Apr 2025

Demystifying Proactive Customer Helpers: Where Do We Find Them?, Estelle Van Tonder, Sam Fullerton

AMTP Proceedings 2025

Amid the growing interest in proactive customer helpers, extant research offers surprisingly little guidance on where to find them. Of interest to this study are proactive helpers taking personal initiative in assisting other customers to avoid harmful brands. Guided by the attitude-behavior phenomenon, selected attitudes and behaviors were examined among 347 customers in the United States using survey research. Latent profile analysis aided in obtaining further clarification regarding the profile characteristics of customers who proactively assist other customers with their brand avoidance behaviors in an anti-consumption context. These profile characteristics are useful, as they provide strategic direction on where to …

South Africans’ Attitudes And Behaviors Regarding Customer Citizenship: The Paradoxical Comparison Of The Primary And The Secondary Data, Christo A. Bisschoff, Sam Fullerton

AMTP Proceedings 2025

The current study compares the extant literature regarding South Africa to a current assessment using primary data to measure the same green phenomenon, namely customer citizenship. Secondary data were used to develop a profile of how external sources perceive South Africa. For the primary data, a sample of 513 consumers in South Africa responded to an invitation-only, Internet-based questionnaire that focused on attitudinal and behavioral issues germane to the five constructs commonly related to customer citizenship within the context of green purchasing and green consumption. The constructs in focus were green mindset, anti-consumption behavior, consumer coaching behavior, green advocacy, and …

Role For Astrocytes In Complex Cognition: An Evolutionary, Behavioral And Computational Perspective, Gregory Simandl Apr 2025

Role For Astrocytes In Complex Cognition: An Evolutionary, Behavioral And Computational Perspective, Gregory Simandl

Dissertations (1934 -)

The human brain has more computational power than modern supercomputers by utilizing only a few signaling systems, rendering it the most efficient computational device ever created. Evolution, though not prospective, has iteratively constructed neural networks of increasing complexity that have ultimately endowed humans with extraordinary cognitive abilities. Through an evolutionary lens, there is a clear correlation between organismal sophistication and network signaling complexity Astrocytes, a non-neuronal cell that makes up approximately half the cells in the human brain, show dramatic increases in morphological and signaling complexity in higher-order species. This co-evolution is likely not coincidental but rather represents the development …

Flex-Fuel Mixing-Controlled Combustion Enabled By Prechamber Ignition (Pc-Mcc), Jared J. Zeman Apr 2025

Flex-Fuel Mixing-Controlled Combustion Enabled By Prechamber Ignition (Pc-Mcc), Jared J. Zeman

Dissertations (1934 -)

There is an imminent need to displace fossil diesel fuel with cleaner burning, domestically produced, renewable fuels for use in heavy-duty engines. Bioethanol is a prime candidate as it widely adopted in the U.S. as a gasoline additive ranging in volume percentage from 10% (E10) up to 85% (E85). Direct substitution of market available ethanol-gasoline blends for diesel fuel is not plausible as the stark reactivity differences would not constitute the same ignition quality nor achieve auto-ignition at all. This work focuses on the development of prechamber enabled mixing-controlled combustion (PC-MCC) as an advanced ignition strategy to facilitate reliable ignition …

Belial: Sexual Violence And Its Legal Remediation In The Deuteronomistic History, Samantha Jo Scott Apr 2025

Belial: Sexual Violence And Its Legal Remediation In The Deuteronomistic History, Samantha Jo Scott

Dissertations (1934 -)

At first glance, the pericopes of Judges 19–20, 1 Samuel 2:12–36, and 1 Samuel 30 have little in common with one another. Yet, several peculiar threads are interwoven in each pericope that signal a common bond between these narratives. In each account, the characterization of the antagonists and their deeds are the same. In Judg 19–20, בני־בליעל, lit. “sons of belial,” are responsible for the rape of the Levite’s concubine. In 1 Sam 2:12–36, Eli’s sons are called בני־בליעל, lit. “sons of belial,” and accused of exploiting the so-called gathering women. In 1 Sam 30, a portion of David’s men …

From Nanoindentation To Microhardness To Tensile Strength: Correlation Coefficients Estimates As A Function Of Microstructure In Eutectic Snbi Alloy, Nataliya Starostina, Aja Hartman, Rosemary Cole, Dongmeng Li, Jong W. Park

Mechanical Engineering

Determining strength to hardness correlation coefficients on nano and microscale in correspondence to microstructure and composition leads the way to inexpensive, non-destructive ways to predict tensile strength of bulk materials, which is important for developing preventive maintenance procedures in a variety of industries. Nanohardness and microhardness tests were performed on an in-house prepared eutectic SnBi alloy. Elemental composition and eutectic morphology were verified by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The linear correlation coefficient, C1 = HIT/Hv, between nanoindentation hardness and Vickers microhardness was determined based on experimental measurements. A value of C …

Race And Greek Mythology: An Analysis Of A Racialized Hierarchy In Literary And Artistic Depictions Of The Line Of Io In Archaic And Classical Greece, Angie Pierre Apr 2025

Race And Greek Mythology: An Analysis Of A Racialized Hierarchy In Literary And Artistic Depictions Of The Line Of Io In Archaic And Classical Greece, Angie Pierre

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Following the emergence of the Greek alphabet in 8th century B.C.E, Greece produced literary works which demonstrated contemporary beliefs, customs, and practices. Additionally, pottery during this era began to be more expressive. The use of geometric shapes and imagery from Egypt were later used to create stories and induce emotions in pottery. Following the Archaic period, the Classical era has produced a plethora of literary and artistic material that expands on material from the Archaic era while simultaneously providing commentary on its own period. While not in a consistent manner, an underlying theme within the art and literature of the …

Engagement In Generalist Social Work Practice: Exploring Conceptual Theory And Textbook Pedagogy, Alice C. Fischer Apr 2025

Engagement In Generalist Social Work Practice: Exploring Conceptual Theory And Textbook Pedagogy, Alice C. Fischer

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Social work has a distinctive orientation to engagement that sets it apart from other helping professions. Engagement occurs both at the beginning and throughout every stage of social work practice with client systems. Despite its inherent and almost synonymous nature with social work practice, the profession has found it challenging to establish a theoretical conceptualization of engagement in social work or a definition of engagement in social work.

This study explored existing literature to establish a construct of engagement and a description of its underlying concepts, variables, and attributes. The construct informed the development of a methodology for comparing how …

An Exploration Into Liminal Spaces And Their Effects On Player Tension, Zane Herrera Apr 2025

An Exploration Into Liminal Spaces And Their Effects On Player Tension, Zane Herrera

Level Design Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how liminal spaces can be used in video games by analyzing their design and impact on player tension. How can designers create transitional or ambiguous environments that contribute to a sense of unease, anticipation, and tension? What are some of the common design elements that help build an effective liminal space, which the researcher calls distortions, and how do those distortions affect player tension? The researcher created a series of levels that explore the different elements of liminal spaces to test how they affect player tension while playing the level.

Super-Canons, William N. Eskridge, Jr. Apr 2025

Super-Canons, William N. Eskridge, Jr.

Vanderbilt Law Review

Especially since 2017, the Roberts Court has been imposing a new regime onto American public law. The new regime is paring back the authority of expert agencies to implement their delegated responsibilities, reducing the power of Congress to make long-term delegations while enhancing the power of the states and the President (and the U.S. Supreme Court itself), protecting and encouraging expression of religious values in public and commercial fora, limiting women’s rights to reproductive choice, and reducing the capacity of state and private institutions to inculcate diversity and inclusion.

This Article maintains that the new regime is not entirely driven …

The Multiple Roles Of 5-Lo In Tissue Regeneration – Insights From Translational Animal Models Utilizing Pharmacological And Genetic Approaches, Roel Navarro, Nidhin John, Claudia Biguetti Apr 2025

The Multiple Roles Of 5-Lo In Tissue Regeneration – Insights From Translational Animal Models Utilizing Pharmacological And Genetic Approaches, Roel Navarro, Nidhin John, Claudia Biguetti

School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research

Inflammation following tissue injury is a natural physiological response, where its course, duration, and intensity help determine whether it promotes beneficial or detrimental outcomes in tissue healing. Arachidonic acid (AA) serves as a substrate for5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway, which synthesizes metabolites such as leukotrienes that influence both acute and chronic inflammatory response.  AA and its product's inhibitors are currently used to treat hypersensitivity reactions. However, literature suggests potential therapeutic efficacy in tissue healing.
