Nitrogen Losses From Cattle Dung, Y Sugimoto, P Roger Ball Apr 2025

Nitrogen Losses From Cattle Dung, Y Sugimoto, P Roger Ball

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Nitrogen (N) recylcing through animal excreta has long been considered beneficial to soil fertility in pasture. However, it was revealed recently that substantial N loss occurred via urine patches in intensively managed grass-clover pastures in New Zealand (Ball et al, 1979 and 1981; Ball and Ryden, 1984). Nitrogen flow through dung patches is another main process in N recycling, as one-third to a half ot the N excreted by cattle and sheep is voided in dung (Whitehead, 1970; Sugimoto et al, 1987). The objective of this research was to determine the nitrogen losses from cattle dung in a ryegrass-white clover …

Effect Of Nitrogen On Herbage Growth And Intake By Sheep In Continuously Grazed Swards Of Tall Fescue Genotypes, A Mazzanti, G Lemaire, F Gastal Apr 2025

Effect Of Nitrogen On Herbage Growth And Intake By Sheep In Continuously Grazed Swards Of Tall Fescue Genotypes, A Mazzanti, G Lemaire, F Gastal

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Relatively little is known about the growth of tall fescue under continuous grazing. Most of reported works about herb age production in such a grazing management have been done with perennial ryegrass and with relatively high levels of nitro gen fertilisation (Hodgson, 1981 ; Bircham, 1981; Parsons et al., 1983). The effect ot the level N nutrition on growth of a continuously grazing sward has not been yet studied. On intermitently defoliated swards of tall fescue, Gastal & Lemaire (1988) have shown that with non limiting level of N nutrition the increase in dry matter production could be 4 or …

Performance Of Cartenoid Pigments Of King Gras (Pennisteum Purperum) Mutants, J Lauzan, R S. Herrera, R O. Martinez, R Cruz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Previous studies from this series have indicated the variability reached in respect to yields and quality of the king grass clones obtained by in vitro tissue culture. The study of the photosynthetic pigments could contribute to explain the performance of these somaclones in respect to their growth and development. Thus, the objective of the present experiment was to learn the content and variation of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids.

The Effects Of Coconut Palms On Pasture Understory, R W. Snaydon, D.N S. Fernando, R Sangakkara Apr 2025

The Effects Of Coconut Palms On Pasture Understory, R W. Snaydon, D.N S. Fernando, R Sangakkara

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pastures are extensively grown under coconut palms, and mainly grazed by cattle (Plucknett, 1979). The main advantages of this form of mixed cropping are : (a) diversification of products, (b) additional income, (c) feed for draft animals, (d) weed control, and (e) more rapid nutrient cycling. Surprisingly little information is available on the effects of pastures and coconut palms on each other (Plucknett, 1979) ; even less is known about the mechanisms of competition between them. This study was designed to study the effects of coconut palms on pasture. A trenching technique was used to investigate the effects of below-ground …

Preliminary Rate Of Growth Curves For Legume Based Improved Pastures In The Mid-Altitude Region Of Yunnan Province Of Southern China, J R. Bruce-Smith, Yang Guo-Rong, Huang Bi-Zhi, Li Ji-Xin

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Yunnan Province in south west China is very mountainous and has several major climatic/ecological zones ranging from tropical to alpine but all are dominated by the south Asian monsoonal rainy season. Extensive tracts of hilly depleted range lands occur in the mid-altitude zone (1800-2500 m) that are potentially suitable for developing to improved legume based pastures. Results of investigations as to suitable species and appropriate fertilizers for this purpose have been discussed previously (Mathison et al., 1985 and Wang et al., 1985). The Project has succesfully established model farms at several places throughout the Province and these carry reasonably productive …

Sustainable Poultry Farming: A Concept Of Iot-Based Poultry Management System For Small-Scale Farmers, Ayodeji Akinsoji Okubanjo, Ignatius Kema Okakwu, Olufemi Peter Alao, Nurudeen Samuel. Lawal, Ayoola Abiola Babalola, Abisola Olayiwola

Al-Bahir

Conventional poultry management techniques are failing to meet increased demand for poultry products as the population continues to grow. As a result, this issue has become a major concern for small-scale farmers, particularly those in low-income areas, in terms of food security. One of the main reasons for this is that the farmers rely on intensive farming methods which are inefficient for automating daily poultry operations. However, intensive farming methods pose major environmental concerns to ecosystems and poultry health. Also, the environmental conditions, welfare, and productivity of poultry operations may be harmed by the global climate crisis and poultry waste …

This article examines how personal data are regulated in emerging modelling and simulation environments, including computer games, mobile apps, and digital twin platforms. This article centers on a specific type of simulated and modelling environment, namely the metaverse. This article considers the privacy issues that arise when people subscribe to and participate in modelling and simulation platforms where vast amounts of data are collected, disclosed and stored. Such data may be vulnerable to misuse by the platform and third parties. This article considers Meta’s “horizons metaverse” platform as a case study for an immersive modelling and simulation platform. It examines …

Addressing The Promise And Peril Of Ai For Nonprofit Management Through A Data Feminist Pedagogy, Billie Sandberg, Rafeel Wasif, Laura C. Hand Apr 2025

Addressing The Promise And Peril Of Ai For Nonprofit Management Through A Data Feminist Pedagogy, Billie Sandberg, Rafeel Wasif, Laura C. Hand

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has opened up possibilities for nonprofit management, and practitioners are taking notice. A recent study revealed that nearly 90% of nonprofit organizations are interested in using AI (MacDonald, Citation2023). Another study indicated that more than half of the nonprofits surveyed use AI to support finance, human resources, communications, and mission-related (i.e., working with clients, program implementation, and grantmaking) functions (Herschander, Citation2024). Indeed, many of us likely know student-practitioners and nonprofit colleagues who leverage AI to help write donor thank-you notes, newsletters, grant proposals, and press releases and who work for nonprofits that incorporate chatbots …

Jurnal Kultivasi

Giant false sensitive plants (Mimosa invisa Colla) and giant sensitive plants (Mimosa pigra L.) are invasive plant species in the tropics and native to America. They are widely distributed in different ecosystems and soil types. Apart from being considered woody shrub weeds, these plant species can be used as herbal medicine for their antioxidant activities. An experiment to study the antioxidant activities and phytochemicals of M. invisa and M. pigra grown at 200 m from the coastline and close to the riverbank (riparian abandoned land) was carried out from March to November 2023. Weed leaves were collected as purposive randomized …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The mammalian cochlea receives efferent feedback from the brain. Many functions for this feedback have been hypothesized, including on short timescales, such as mediating attentional states, and long timescales, such as buffering acoustic trauma. Testing these hypotheses has been impeded by an inability to make direct measurements of efferent effects in awake animals. Here, we assessed the role of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent nerve fibers on cochlear amplification by measuring organ of Corti vibratory responses to sound in both sexes of awake and anesthetized mice. We studied long-term effects by genetically ablating the efferents and/or afferents. Cochlear amplification increased …

Incremental Rehearsal As An Instructional Technique For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Robert A. Cordova Apr 2025

Incremental Rehearsal As An Instructional Technique For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Robert A. Cordova

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Repetition is said to be the most important factor in learning (Symonds & Chase, 1992). A common instructional technique that also incorporates repetition is incremental rehearsal (IR), which is often implemented due to its potential efficiency and effectiveness. Previous research has indicated a positive effect on reading fluency, math intervention, and sight word acquisitions using IR teaching procedures; however, there is a stark lack of application of IR to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Therefore, the purpose of the study was to evaluate IR as an instructional technique for skill acquisition, specifically within an early intervention setting with young …

Key Points:

  1. In patients with CKD, non-DNMT3A clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular events.

  2. There was no significant difference in the CHIP–cardiovascular disease association based on baseline eGFR, diabetes status, or race.

  3. The protective effect of IL6R p.Asp358Ala on non-DNMT3A CHIP cardiovascular risk was similar to the general population.

Background: Patients with CKD are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) has been associated with cardiovascular disease in the general population, with a causal role observed in animal models. In the general population, the effect of …

Californians’ Perceptions Of The Causes Of Homelessness And Potential Policy Solutions, Sophie G. Srivastava, Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Vincent Berardi Apr 2025

Californians’ Perceptions Of The Causes Of Homelessness And Potential Policy Solutions, Sophie G. Srivastava, Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Vincent Berardi

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction

This study examines whether residents’ perceptions of the causes of homelessness and preferred policy solutions are associated with homeless-related behaviors and opinions, and whether such perceptions are attributed to internal or external factors.

Methods

California residents (N = 371) completed a survey and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted, which identified subscales of the perceived causes, preferred policy solutions, opinions, and behaviors. We used MANCOVA to examine which sociodemographic characteristics were associated with each subscale, and multiple regressions to assess relationships among subscales.

Results

As predicted by attribution theory, internal causes (e.g. lack of ambition) were positively associated …

Students For Sustainable Fashion & The Impact Of Fast Fashion, Anne M. York Apr 2025

Students For Sustainable Fashion & The Impact Of Fast Fashion, Anne M. York

Honors Theses

This thesis report took a project-based approach, making a change on campus through Students for Sustainable Fashion (SFSF), a club I founded here at the University of Mississippi. My thesis intends to document the establishment process and record the growth of SFSF throughout its last three semesters. SFSF emerged due to a significant challenge identified through casual class conversations, observational thinking, and campus engagement. However, university students are provided with abundant information about fast fashion's detrimental effects, and many feel unable to act due to social pressures, financial constraints, and the influence of fast-paced consumer culture. While students often desire …

When Can A Lawyer Lawfully Use Threats When Negotiating?, James M. Fischer Apr 2025

When Can A Lawyer Lawfully Use Threats When Negotiating?, James M. Fischer

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

This Article focuses upon a basic negotiation device—a threat, used in a particular context—threats contained in settlement demand letters. In some, but not all, cases, however, the threat may be deemed a crime (extortion), in which case, the lawyer may be subject to sanction (criminal or civil liability, professional discipline) for making the threat. This consequence has, however, been largely ignored in academic literature. That is unfortunate, for it appears that many lawyers are unaware of the risks negotiation threats present because the risk is not well defined in the professional codes lawyers would normally look to for guidance.

Sighting The Scope Of A Lawyer’S Representation, Douglas R. Richmond Apr 2025

Sighting The Scope Of A Lawyer’S Representation, Douglas R. Richmond

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

Clients engage lawyers for many reasons. Regardless of the circumstances, however, the lawyer and the client need to agree on the scope of the lawyer’s representation, meaning the legal services the lawyer will perform for the client. The client must agree to and understand the scope of the lawyer’s representation as aspects of establishing her objectives for the matter and thereafter evaluating whether the lawyer is achieving those objectives. The client must also understand the scope of the representation to be able to decide whether the matter’s potential expense justifies its pursuit and to gauge the reasonableness of the lawyer’s …

Structural and functional alterations in the brain's reward circuitry are present in cocaine use disorder (CocUD), but their molecular underpinnings remain unclear. To investigate these mechanisms, we performed single-nuclei multiome profiling on postmortem caudate nucleus tissue from six individuals with CocUD and eight controls. We profiled 30,030 nuclei, identifying 13 cell types including D1- and D2-medium spiny neurons (MSNs) and glial cells. We observed 1485 differentially regulated genes and 10,342 differentially accessible peaks, with alterations in MSNs and astrocytes related to neurotransmitter activity and synapse organization. Gene regulatory network analysis identified transcription factors including ZEB1 as exhibiting distinct CocUD-specific subclusters, …
