The Illusion Of Stability In Family Law, Kaiponanea T. Matsumura
The Illusion Of Stability In Family Law, Kaiponanea T. Matsumura
Vanderbilt Law Review
Stability is universally accepted as a central value in family law. Within the context of adult relationships, stability determines which relationships the law will recognize and support. Within the context of parent child relationships, stability determines who will be recognized as a parent, whose parental rights will be terminated by the state, and who, among fit parents, will receive custody. This Article challenges stability’s pride of place in family law, identifying three problems with the law’s use of stability.
First, stability is often used in a circular way. Lawmakers treat stability as a requirement—a trait to which the law responds—even …

Disambiguart: A Neural-Based Inference Model For Knowledge Graph Disambiguation, Budhitama Subagdja, D. Shanthoshigaa, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
One main challenge in constructing a knowledge graph (KG) is to deal with ambiguity. Specifically, an entity in the graph can be assigned with multiple meanings while two or more entities considered to have different meanings may actually be the same. Assigning an entity with the correct meaning may involve re-evaluation of its relevant contexts. This costly operation typically involves searching for other similar entities within the KG such that the context can be determined. In this paper, a new model called DisambiguART is proposed leveraging multi-channel matching and inference in a self-organizing neural network for sense disambiguation in knowledge …

Enhancing Deliberativeness: Evaluating The Impact Of Multimodal Reflection Nudges, Shun Yi Yeo, Zhuoqun Jiang, Anthony Tang, Simon Tangi Perrault
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Nudging participants with text-based reflective nudges enhances deliberation quality on online deliberation platforms. The effectiveness of multimodal reflective nudges, however, remains largely unexplored. Given the multi-sensory nature of human perception, incorporating diverse modalities into self-reflection mechanisms has the potential to better support various reflective styles. This paper explores how presenting reflective nudges of different types (direct: persona and indirect: storytelling) in different modalities (text, image, video and audio) affects deliberation quality. We conducted two user studies with 20 and 200 participants respectively. The first study identifies the preferred modality for each type of reflective nudges, revealing that text is most …

Developing A Small Molecule To Inhibit Hsf1 Expression In Cancer And Evaluating Natural Genetic Variation In Small Molecule Toxicity., Michaela Kendal Foley
Developing A Small Molecule To Inhibit Hsf1 Expression In Cancer And Evaluating Natural Genetic Variation In Small Molecule Toxicity., Michaela Kendal Foley
Theses and Dissertations
Each year cancer affects nearly 20 million people worldwide and genetic differences across populations can impact cancer onset and progression. Specifically, tumors with high levels of HSF1, the master regulator of the cytoprotective heat shock response (HSR), are correlated with poor patient outcomes in multiple cancers such as prostate, breast, and melanoma. Subsequently, the development of pharmacological inhibitors of HSF1 represents a promising strategy for anticancer therapeutics. Using a luciferase-based transcriptional reporter, two small molecule libraries were screened for inhibitors of HSF1 expression in human embryonic kidney cells, yielding ten compounds that decrease HSF1 expression. To identify if cancer lines …
Matrix Training Of Verb Tenses With Autistic Children, Alexandra Lynn Ewald
Matrix Training Of Verb Tenses With Autistic Children, Alexandra Lynn Ewald
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to extend the research on matrix training by evaluating its efficacy for producing recombinative generalization of regular verb tense endings. Three autistic children were shown videos of people known to the participants acting out behaviors associated with an action about to take place, currently taking place, or that took place. The targets (actors, actions, and verb tenses) were arranged in a matrix, and the targets appearing along the diagonal of the matrix were directly trained, while the remaining targets were probed to determine if the participant was able to emit correct responses without any …
Blink-Related Brainwaves As Digital Biomarkers For Cognition Assessment During Complex Tasks, Lexine Carmlixa Sibert-Jolissaint
Blink-Related Brainwaves As Digital Biomarkers For Cognition Assessment During Complex Tasks, Lexine Carmlixa Sibert-Jolissaint
Theses and Dissertations
Blink-related oscillations (BROs) are neurophysiological responses observed in electroencephalography (EEG) following spontaneous blinking, reflecting the brain processing of new visual information. Prior research has demonstrated BRO responses across various cognitive states, such as resting, cognitive loading, and sensory stimulation, highlighting their potential as a non-invasive biomarker of brain function. We conducted the first investigation of BRO responses during a verbal fluency (VF) task, which is a complex, dynamic task state combining memory, visual perception, executive function, and language processing. Using publicly available EEG data from 22 healthy adults, we measured BRO responses over the left anterior frontal region corresponding to …

Manganese-Induced Precocious Puberty Alters Mammary Epithelial Cell Proliferation In Female Rats, Alina M. Hamilton, Vinod K. Srivastava, Jill K. Hiney, William L. Dees, Robert K. Dearth
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Precocious puberty (PP) is an established breast cancer risk factor. In the normal mammary gland, hormone receptor-positive (HR+) cells rarely proliferate. In breast cancer, proliferating epithelial cells are often HR+. It is not known if PP can modify this population of proliferating HR+ cells. Previously, we established a manganese-induced precocious puberty (MnPP) model to study the effects of PP on mammary gland development in female rats. Here, we characterized the distribution of HR+ proliferating mammary epithelial cells in prepubertal and adult rodents, in association with precocious puberty. Female rats were exposed daily to 10 mg/kg manganese chloride or saline (control) …
Antimicrobial Eats: How Food Additives Are Contributing To Obesity Via The Gut Microbiome, Olivia Mankos
Antimicrobial Eats: How Food Additives Are Contributing To Obesity Via The Gut Microbiome, Olivia Mankos
Senior Honors Theses
The typical modern diet is brimming with food additives used in food processing. Additives such as antibiotic residues, GMOs, pesticide residues, anti-caking agents, emulsifiers, artificial sweeteners, colorants, flavor enhancers, and preservatives. Most of these additives seem to shift the gut microbiome towards more pro-inflammatory signals. When all these additives are considered as an amalgam, such as with the modern processed diet, the ramifications on the gut microbiome are concerning. Obesity, which is characterized by low-level chronic inflammation, is likely exacerbated by these food additives. Consequently, most of these additives should be avoided or banned for optimal health.
Mechanisms Of Behavioral Change In Hosts Of Toxoplasma Gondii: A Review, Olivia Grimsley
Mechanisms Of Behavioral Change In Hosts Of Toxoplasma Gondii: A Review, Olivia Grimsley
Senior Honors Theses
The parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a highly ubiquitous parasite that latently infects an estimated 33% percent of the global population. Toxoplasmosis is of obvious clinical significance due to the extremely high risks to the unborn who contract it congenitally. Less attention has been given to a more subtle aspect of latent infection, which is the behavioral alterations that are commonly experienced by those who contract the parasite. Infected individuals commonly display a variety of altered behaviors, such as increased aggression and risk-seeking behaviors, depression, higher tendency towards suicide and self-directed violence, a loss of fear response, and a greatly increased …

The Critical Ecosocial Framework: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Integrating Ant-Racist, Anti- Oppressive, And Ecosocial Work Practice, Georgianna Dolan-Reilly
PhD of Social Work
The social work profession has an ethical obligation to address racism, oppression, and environmental injustices. However, multilevel resistance and challenges to acknowledging and confronting these interconnected issues persist both within the profession and throughout broader society. By neglecting to integrate environmental justice and Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression (ARAO) into practice, the social work profession remains complicit in the very cycles of oppression (white supremacy, colonialism, ableism, sexism etc.) that we seek to dismantle. Presently, no research broadly examines the use of ARAO by social workers engaged in environmental, climate change, environmental disasters, or other place and nature-based topics (ecosocial workers). Further, …

Structural Vibration Analysis Of The Multi Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (Mmrtg) On The Martian Surface, Christopher Brown
Structural Vibration Analysis Of The Multi Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (Mmrtg) On The Martian Surface, Christopher Brown
Master's Theses
A Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) is a radioisotope power system designed for use within both planetary atmospheres and the vacuum of space. A radioisotope power system uses a radioisotope fuel source which generates heat that is then converted into electricity by the system’s thermocouples. These generators are used as a power source on space missions with very long service durations. MMRTGs have a required usage lifespan of roughly fourteen years, therefore the system must withstand stressors without suffering significant structural damage that would affect their functionality.
It is important to take into consideration that MMRTGs house radioactive materials; therefore, …

Leveraging Innate Immune Sensors To Generate Durable Anti-Glioma Adaptive Immune Responses, Spencer Lea
Leveraging Innate Immune Sensors To Generate Durable Anti-Glioma Adaptive Immune Responses, Spencer Lea
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Glioblastoma is an aggressive primary brain malignancy harboring a tumor microenvironment that is mostly devoid of T cell effector infiltration but is dominated by immune suppressive microglia, macrophages, and myeloid-derived suppresser cells. These innate immune cells display impaired phagocytosis and antigen presentation and are inadequate for triggering the subsequent immune activating signals needed for anti-tumor adaptive effector responses. Glioblastoma tumors can further restrict phagocytosis and subsequent tumor antigen presentation by the upregulation of the antiphagocytic “don’t eat me” ligand CD47. Here we tested whether activation of multiple conserved innate immune pathways could initiate proinflammatory conversion of suppressive myeloid populations, activation …
Immune Landscape Of Early Liver Metastatic Lesions In A Novel Immunocompetent Murine Colorectal Cancer Metastasis Model, Alaa Mohamed
Immune Landscape Of Early Liver Metastatic Lesions In A Novel Immunocompetent Murine Colorectal Cancer Metastasis Model, Alaa Mohamed
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Colorectal cancer minimal residual disease (MRD) represents a major clinical problem for colorectal cancer patients, with failure rates of surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy between 5% to 40% depending on stage of disease. In our study, we simulated MRD using genetically engineered organoids with precise somatic editing of APC and TP53, creating a murine model that mimics human liver metastatic colorectal cancer. By implementing a meticulously timed experimental metastatic model, we could detect microscopic tumor lesions. Through genomic and transcriptomic analyses, we pinpointed the importance of macrophages, particularly those expressing high levels of CSF1R, in these microscopic metastatic focal lesions. We …
Unraveling Epigenetic Mechanisms That Regulate Breast Cancer Lung Metastatic Relapse By Rewiring The Immune Microenvironment, Jayanta Mondal
Unraveling Epigenetic Mechanisms That Regulate Breast Cancer Lung Metastatic Relapse By Rewiring The Immune Microenvironment, Jayanta Mondal
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Metastasis accounts for >90% of cancer-related deaths and thwarting metastasis is widely considered to be the “Holy Grail” of cancer treatment. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death among women and is characterized by its proclivity to spread to distant secondary organs like the lungs, and the brain. These disseminated tumor cells lie dormant at the secondary site and can undergo metastatic relapse. Epigenetic alterations are a predominant hallmark of cancer, however, its role in facilitating reawakening of dormant cancer cells and the subsequent metastatic relapse remains to be elucidated. To address this gap of knowledge, we …
Developing Novel Therapies Targeting The Tumor Microenvironment Of Aggressive Breast Cancer, Lan T H Phi
Developing Novel Therapies Targeting The Tumor Microenvironment Of Aggressive Breast Cancer, Lan T H Phi
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) are the most aggressive breast cancer subtypes. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is critical in driving these aggressive breast cancers' clinical phenotype and aggressiveness. Therefore, we explored novel actionable targets and complementary therapies targeting the TME to improve the outcomes of patients with these cancers.
In this thesis, we identified AXL as a potential therapeutic target in IBC due to its role in generating an immunosuppressive TME. Indeed, inhibiting the AXL pathway suppresses IBC tumor growth and reduces M2 macrophage populations in various mouse models. Mechanistically, AXL facilitates the polarization of M2 …
Impact Of Tumor Cell Expressed Cd38 On Metastasis And Immune Evasion In Breast Cancer, Tanvi Visal
Impact Of Tumor Cell Expressed Cd38 On Metastasis And Immune Evasion In Breast Cancer, Tanvi Visal
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly metastatic breast cancer subtype. The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of cancer cells is a key feature of the metastatic cascade and is not a binary process but often generates malignant cells with both epithelial (E) and mesenchymal (M) traits known as hybrid EM cells. Recent studies highlight the enhanced metastatic potential of the hybrid EM cells. However, molecular insights and targetable vulnerabilities within hybrid EM remain elusive. We discovered that hybrid EM murine tumors are enriched in CD38, an immunesuppressive molecule associated with worse clinical outcomes in liquid malignancies but relatively understudied in solid …
Rod Photoreceptor Regeneration In A Zebrafish Model With Retinitis Pigmentosa, Eyad Shihabeddin
Rod Photoreceptor Regeneration In A Zebrafish Model With Retinitis Pigmentosa, Eyad Shihabeddin
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
A cellular hallmark of inherited retinal degenerative diseases is progressive loss of photoreceptors until one is completely blind. Unlike mammalian models, Zebrafish have the ability to naturally regenerate their neurons after injury or disease is detected. We have generated a zebrafish model with the most common autosomal dominant form of the inherited retinal degenerative disease known as Retinitis Pigmentosa. We utilize immunohistochemistry, single-cell RNA sequencing, several analysis tools, behavioral assays and oligonucleotides to characterize our zebrafish model and identify the transcription factors necessary for rod photoreceptor regeneration. We show that our zebrafish model has continuous degeneration and regeneration of rod …
Exploring Veto Activity: Dnam-1-Cd155 Axis In Overcoming Nk Cell-Mediated Allo-Rejection And Applications For Car-T Cell Therapy, Wei-Hsin Liu
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
As Miller et al. defined veto activity, it enables cells to target host cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) precursors specific to veto cells' antigens, selectively eliminating anti- donor T cell clones without inducing rejection. By leveraging this unique immune property, two key research aims were proposed: “Exploration of the Impact of Veto Activity on Natural Killer (NK) Cell-Mediated Allo-rejection” and “Development of Off-the- shelf Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-T Therapy: Engineering Anti-Viral Veto CD8+ T Cells”. As demonstrated in our previous research, in a murine model with mild conditioning, anti-third-party central memory CD8+ veto T cells (veto Tcm) can prevent T cell- …
The Gut Microbiome As A Novel Approach For Reversing Long-Term Inflammation And Accelerated Aging Across The Lifespan, Janelle M. Korf
The Gut Microbiome As A Novel Approach For Reversing Long-Term Inflammation And Accelerated Aging Across The Lifespan, Janelle M. Korf
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Introduction: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) arises from disrupted perinatal cerebral oxygenation and perfusion. It is a leading global cause of infant death and disability which disproportionally affects males. Like adult stroke, HIE initiates a rapid influx of inflammatory cells across the blood brain barrier and a loss of microglial homeostasis. Persistent peripheral inflammation in children with a history of HIE is recognized but its ramifications, including accelerated aging, are poorly understood. As this coincides with critical stages of brain development, interventions started months or years post-injury may still improve survivors’ quality of life. One promising intervention is to manipulate the …

Overcoming Resistance To Cdk4/6-Targeted Therapy Using Jak2/Stat3 Inhibitor In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Chuling Zhuang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women, with nearly 30% of cases becoming metastatic accounting for over 90% of breast cancer-related deaths. Among different breast cancer subtypes, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has the worst prognosis and the highest propensity to metastasize. However, TNBC patients have limited treatment options due to their lack of actionable drug targets while therapeutic resistances result in high rates of recurrence and metastasis. Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) are major cell cycle regulators that control G1 to S phase transition and aberrant hyperactivation of the CDK4/6 pathway results in uncontrolled …

Impact Of Personal And Family History Of Huntington's Disease On The Decision And Ability To Obtain Life, Long-Term Care, And Disability Insurance, Karli Livingston
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Huntington’s disease (HD) is an inherited, neurodegenerative condition characterized by a clinical triad of motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms. Individuals diagnosed with HD manifest characteristic symptoms of the disease including motor and cognitive changes, and they may or may not have undergone genetic testing to confirm the diagnosis. Individuals at-risk for HD are those who have not yet undergone genetic testing for HD, but have a first- or second- degree relative diagnosed with the disease. Genetic testing for HD is categorized into two forms: predictive and confirmatory. However, many individuals choose not to pursue testing due to a fear of …

Uncovering A Fundamental Mechanism Underlying Female Oocyte Quality And Rasopathies Using C. Elegans As A Model System, Han Bit Baek
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Signaling pathways are molecular networks that allow cells to communicate between and within themselves. They are crucial for the coordination of diverse cellular processes and are the molecular mechanism in which cells sense and respond to their environment. RAS (Rat Sarcoma) is a small GTPase that transmits extracellular growth factor signals through a downstream kinase cascade and ERK (Extracellular-signal regulated kinase) is the terminal kinase, and it controls cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and survival by phosphorylating its downstream effectors. This post translational modification regulates the effector by modulating its activity, levels, and/or interaction with other molecules. Given the …
Exploring The Immunologic Consequences Of Atrx Deficiency In Glioma, Benjamin Whitfield
Exploring The Immunologic Consequences Of Atrx Deficiency In Glioma, Benjamin Whitfield
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
ATRX is a key chromatin regulator that is frequently mutated across multiple cancer types. One of the most common ATRX-mutated tumor types is the adult-type glioma, IDH-mutant, Astrocytoma. It is known that ATRX mutation leads to increases in DNA damage, replication stress, and global epigenetic regulation at a cell level; however, less is known about the impact of ATRX mutation on immune signaling. Furthermore, little is known about the interaction of ATRX loss with gain-of-function mutations in IDH. In this paper we set out to explore the impact of ATRX loss on immune signaling in gliomas, both in the context …

Investigating Prefrontal Cortex Neuronal Signatures Of Opioid-Induced Risk-Taking Behavior, Cana Quave
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Opioid use disorder occurs alongside impaired risk-related decision-making, but the underlying neural correlates are unclear. We developed an approach-avoidance conflict task using a modified conditioned place preference procedure to study neural signals of risky opioid seeking in the prefrontal cortex, a region implicated in executive decision-making. Following morphine conditioned place preference, rats underwent a conflict test in which fear-inducing cat odor was introduced in the previously drug-paired side of the apparatus. While the saline-exposed control group avoided cat odor, the morphine group included two subsets of rats that either maintained a preference for the paired side despite the presence of …
